What Johnson Doesn't Want You to Know

According to its chairman, Dominic Grieve, Boris Johnson personally blocked – for “bogus” reasons – the imminent publication of a cross-party report on Russia meddling in UK politics by Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC).

Elements of the suppressed report have now leaked out. According to CNN, the evidence of Bill Browder, the campaigner behind the anti-corruption Magnitsky Acts, suggests that Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, has deployed Russians “to infiltrate UK society and to conceal the underlying Russian controllers and their agendas”. Direct party funding is only the tip of the iceberg. The connections between Putin’s anti-EU agenda and Brexit politicians go much deeper. (…)

While the ISC report has been suppressed during Britain’s General Election campaign, another report was published in February this year by another official UK parliamentary committee – the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee, chaired by Conservative politician Damian Collins, into disinformation and fake news. This report found that Russia had directly tried to intervene in the 2016 EU Referendum.

The committee estimated that the state-controlled channels RT and Sputnik‘s pro-Leave websites garnered 134 million potential impressions – nearly five times the reach of the two domestic campaigns combined (Vote Leave had 33 million impressions and Leave.EU had 11 million). Had Russia paid for a social media campaign of this scale, the committee estimated, it would have cost between £1.4 and £4.14 million.

Moreover, the report revealed how the Internet Research Agency, a Kremlin-backed St Petersburg-based troll farm indicted for election interference in the US, was simultaneously intervening in British politics, with a marked emphasis on stirring up Islamophobia and racial hatred. It “tried to fuel social divisions, including religious tensions, in the aftermath of the Westminster, Manchester, London Bridge and Finsbury Park terror attacks,” it stated. (…)

Nigel Farage’s former party UKIP has been a strong supporter of Russia for over a decade.

Former MEP and party secretary, Gerard Batten, has been close to former KGB figures since the 1980s and identified Alexander Litvinenko as a disaffected FSB officer six months before he was murdered by polonium poisoning by Putin’s security services. He co-authored an anti-EU book with an aide, Pavel Stroilov, who had allegedly fled Russia with “smuggled secret Soviet documents”. (…)

Farage supports other European right-wing politicians such as Marine Le Pen and Matteo Salvini who have received Russian funding. His appearances at the European Parliament are regularly covered by RT and he was asked onto the channel no less than 17 times between 2010 and 2014. His Leave.EU campaign also regularly recycled Russian racist propaganda. (…)

The Russian diplomat Udod is reported to be have been the handler of Russian spies in the UK. Udod was invited to a drinks party hosted by Banks on the night of the shock EU Referendum result in June 2016.

In 2018, Udod was expelled from the UK as a suspected spy after the abortive assassination attempt on Sergei Skripal using the novichok nerve agent in Salisbury. (…)

t is clear in retrospect that the Russian attempt to intervene in British politics was a two-pronged affair.

While Yakovenko and Udod made overtures to UKIP and Nigel Farage, another expelled Russian diplomat, Sergei Nalobin, first secretary in the Russian Embassy’s political section, was reaching out to rebuild ties with the Conservative Party.

According to the Observer, he was keen to get involved in fundraising for the Conservative Party and wanted to know of the rivalry between David Cameron and Boris Johnson. (…)

But Nalobin’s most controversial role was helping to establish the Conservative Friends of Russia. This group was launched in the Russian Embassy’s gardens in August 2012 by Yakovenko and Nalobin, and attended by senior Conservatives such as the then chair of the DCMS Committee, and soon-to-be Culture Minister, John Whittingdale, who was the group’s honorary vice president. Whittingdale was accompanied by an office aide, Carrie Symonds, who was promoted to special advisor when he moved into the Cabinet in 2015. (Symonds now resides in Number 10 with Boris Johnson). (…)

Matthew Elliott, destined to become the chief executive of the official Vote Leave campaign, was a founding member of Conservative Friends of Russia and visited the Moscow Duma as part of a delegation. Nalobin wished Elliott well on his engagement in 2014 and described Boris Johnson as “our good friend” in a now-deleted social media post.

While direct contacts between Conservatives and Russian officials appear to have chilled when Nalobin was effectively expelled in 2015, intermediaries still made approaches.

In late 2017, Byline revealed that the Maltese-born professor Joseph Mifsud, named as a Russian intermediary in the Mueller Investigation, was telling colleagues he was going to meet Boris Johnson “to discuss Brexit”. He was subsequently photographed in the company of the then Foreign Secretary at a fundraising event in Reading. (…)

As reported on Byline Times last month, a Ukrainian born oligarch, Dmytro Firtash, currently awaiting extradition to the US, has extensive connections to both Putin, the Russian underworld and the British ‘Brexit establishment’, including John Whittingdale.

Another rich oligarch born in the Soviet Union, Alexander Temerko, has contributed more than £1 million to the Conservatives since he gained British citizenship in 2011 and also financed Johnson’s leadership campaign. According to Reuters, Temerko describes himself as a “friend” who would “plot” late into the night over a bottle of wine when Johnson became Foreign Secretary. He admitted to being behind early plots to remove Theresa May.

The Russian connections to Vote Leave go beyond its chief executive Matthew Elliott. The campaign’s director, Dominic Cummings, spent three years in Russia from 1994 to 1997. According to the Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry last week, “an official-level whistleblower” has raised concerns about Cummings’ time in Russia, and questions about his relationships with figures in Russian politics, intelligence, and security – as well as his relationship with Nalobin’s Conservative friends of Russia. Cummings is now Boris Johnson’s senior advisor. (…)

The list celebrates all that is good and great in the LGBT+ community

This year’s Pride Power List has been released and it includes musicians Years and Years‘ Olly Alexander and Lucy Spraggan, and also actor Sir Ian McKellen.

Today, celebrations are taking place in the nation’s capital to commemorate Pride in London – honouring the lives, achievements, history and future of the LGBT+ community.

To coincide with the occasion, the Pride Power List 2019 has been released, revealing the members of the LGBT+ community in the UK who have made a significant impact in the fight for the equality and inclusion of LGBT+ individuals.

“The list celebrates all that is good and great in the LGBT+ community and has a unique mix of celebrity, community, celebrity and business leaders,” said Linda Riley, founder of the Pride Power List.

Clare County Library Building Construction News

Construction has restarted on the Clare County Library in Ennis, Co Clare, in mid-west Ireland.

Stalled for many months following the collapse of the main contractor LM Keating, the project is once again underway with new contractor Coolsivna from Co. Galway appointed following a public re-tender.

Designed by Keith Williams Architects, the 2,320m2 project for client Clare County Council will form a new cultural hub for the town and the region. It will abut the town’s existing Glór Theatre (2001) adding the new County Library and a small gallery for contemporary art.

The main library over two floors is to be contained in an undulating curved façade that locks the project into the site geometry and establishes its unique identity. The county library administrative service is placed in a simple bar of accommodation above the library, with the art gallery placed on the opposite side of the main entrance in its own cubic form.

Currently at sub-structure stage, when complete the building will provide a single gateway to the literary, visual and performing arts contained within a single cultural complex.

Clare CEO, Pat Dowling “welcomed the re-activation of the project and looked forward to its opening in the latter part of 2023”.

Helen Walsh : County Librarian said… “the long awaited new library will bring a wonderful collaboration together on the site unifying the literary arts with the visual and performing arts”.

Keith Williams, the firm’s founder and director of design stated,

“This is a very important day in the genesis of this project and we are looking forward to the project now moving ahead once more. I am confident that over the course of the next 18 months, a beautiful new public building will arise on this site offering outstanding library facilities to the people of Ennis and the region.”

The new Clare County Library, designed by Keith Williams Architects in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland has been granted planning consent.

The new 2,300m2 project for client Clare County Council, has been conceived as a new cultural hub for the town and the region. It will abut the town’s existing Glór Theatre (2001) adding the new County Library and a small contemporary Art Gallery. When complete its new main entrance will form a gateway to the literary, visual and performing arts contained within.

The new building takes the form of a 10m high sinuous masonry wall which will provide the outer skin to the library and art gallery creating a new civic frontage for this new arts building complex. Rooflights and sidelight glazed slots bring daylight into the heart of the plan, whilst “incident windows” connect the interior with the exterior and offer views to key points within the town. The administrative offices for the county library sit above the double height main library space in a single, rectangular form.

The building fabric exhibits a strong masonry presence using complimentary contrasting colour in the fenestration and integral panelling, to create strong rhythm on the façade.

Technical design has commenced with a view to construction starting later in 2018.

Cllr. Tom McNamara, Mayor of Clare, commented, “The development of a new County Library facility has long been sought after by past and present Members of the Council, as well as by the local community. Clare County Library is one of our most valuable resources and it is appropriate therefore, that it is provided with a modern facility befitting its status from which to continue to deliver a vitally important service to the people of Clare.”

Mayor McNamara also acknowledged thecontribution of the wider community during the public consultation process on the proposed new facility.

Pat Dowling, Chief Executive of Clare County Council, added, “Clare County Council is committed to further enhancing its cultural facilities and infrastructure. This development willstrengthen Clare’s reputation as a cultural centre as well as support economic and social activity in Ennis.”

Liam Conneally, Director of Service and responsible for the Library’s delivery stated that “the new Clare County Library being contiguous to the glór music centre will represent a cluster of cultural and creative activity befitting Ennis, County Clare’s capital town”. He stated “this modern architectural design located on an important Ennis town centre site will not only serve its library function well but will also be aesthetically pleasing to locals and visitors alike”.

Helen Walsh, Clare County Librarian, commented, “Ireland has seen some ambitious library buildings developed in the last decade and some outstanding and beautiful architectural structures have been achieved as a result. We believe the new County Library will be one ofthese buildings combining technologically advanced services whilst keeping the customer at the heart of service delivery. It truly will be a library for the 21st century.”

Keith Williams, fellow director Richard Brown and their team have worked in Ireland since 2001, and were recently shortlisted for the 2017 RIAI Triennial Gold Medal.

Keith Williams Architects have been selected to design the new Clare County Cultural Centre in Ennis in the west of Ireland for clients Clare County Council.

Conceived as a new cultural hub for the town and the region, the 2,300m2 project will extend the existing Glór Theatre (2001) adding a new Library and Art Gallery. The project is scheduled to be submitted for planning consent later in the year.

Keith Williams, the firm’s founder and director of design stated,

“After a bit of a break we are absolutely thrilled to be working on new projects in Ireland again and to have won this important commission. l look forward to working with Clare County Council and the community on the development of the project.”

Consultants ARUP, AECOM, AxisEng and OLM Consultancy will be working with KWA on the project.
