summer ‘86
03:51 p.m.
You closed the door behind you a bit too harshly and rolled your eyes at your brother’s complaint about it. “It’s a cheap old car, Jonathan, not like I took a ride with Steve.” You told him, nodding at Harrington’s BMW parking right beside your brother’s car.
“Yeah, it’s an old car, meaning that it could break at any moment now!”
“She’ll live.” Nancy answered for you, getting out of her own car on the other side of Steve’s, and the both of you just chuckled at Jon’s grimace.
You started getting some of your and your siblings’ belongings from the truck with no help whatsoever, as Jonathan ran to embrace his girlfriend, Will ran to the lake’s edge for the view, already retrieving his notebook and pencils from his backpack, and El ran to Max for their gossip time.
“Need a hand in there, princess?” His voice and sarcastic tone were the same you kept in memory, and you stopped your actions to look at him.
Eddie’s thumbs were resting through his belt loops, his black ripped pants very similar to those he wore last time you saw him four months ago. But, because of the heat, his hair was tied up in a bun on the top of his head, only a few strands dangling by the side of his face. And he dismissed the regular leather jacket and denim vest combo, choosing to display a handmade cropped shirt of what you figured was a band you weren’t familiar with.
His happy trail was out and about, basically waving at you.
If the heat was hard to endure before, it was now unbearable.
You led your eyes up, back to his face, and the smirk he sustained told you all you needed to know. You hoped you weren’t drooling. At least he didn’t tease you.
“I’ll take that offer, yeah.” You answered his question and he ended the distance between the two of you, helping you with the cooler your mom had filled with water bottles, half of them later exchanged for beer bottles - courtesy of Steve’s parents’ stock.
You and Eddie walked to the lake’s deck and placed your belongings on its wooden planks, while the rest of your friends were also placing stuff like towels, foldable chairs, and their own backpacks and coolers on the ground. The younger ones were already taking off their clothes - Lucas threw Dustin, fully clothed, onto the water and was now laughing hysterically at his friend’s screams.
“Beware of leeches!” You warned, and El and Max stopped mid-motion as they were taking their jeans shorts off to look at you, all wide eyes and jaws open. “Just kidding.” You laughed, dodging the shoe one of them threw your way.
You only had one and a half weeks of freedom to visit your new family home in Fort Wayne that summer. And it took you a while (and some bribery), but you were finally able to convince all your friends - the older and the younger ones - to spend a whole afternoon together. The chosen lake was almost halfway between Fort Wayne and Hawkins, easily accessible to both your family and the rest of your friends. You invited Argyle to come back to Indiana with you for a visit, but he was unfortunately unable to, working extra to repay the two weeks he had kidnapped the Surfer Boys van. At least he still had his job.
Aside from your absence, everything seemed to be going great for your family - finally. Your mom and Hop were insanely in love, your mom found a job she liked in the new city and Hopper was working in the Fort Wayne PD, quickly rising ranks. Will and El were able to, alongside many students in Hawkins, retake their finals, and were moving forward to 10th grade in Fort Wayne at the end of summer. Jonathan did the same, but for his graduation.
The rest of your friends were also granted that special treatment, both the freshmen (now sophomores!) and the seniors (now graduates!). Eddie, because of his wounds (and pariah status) was actually granted one extra week to study - and Nance tutored him, ensuring he wouldn’t be held back as a senior for the fourth time. Being known all over Hawkins finally gave your family and friends some advantages instead of bullying.
Your job as a camp counselor took most of your summer away from you, and the three-day trips back and forth on buses - because you couldn’t afford plane tickets - took some more, but you were still happy to be able to travel and see the ones you loved. Because it really felt like this time all the distress was finally over, completely gone. You didn’t have that bad hunch creeping up your spine anymore. Will didn’t get chills, his neck hair didn’t rise since he moved back. Even Jonathan was optimistic, and that was saying something.
So as you took off the clothes over your bikini, laid down on your towel ready for a sunbath, with your friends’ excited chatter and your younger siblings’ loud laughs in your ears, you just relaxed, no worries disturbing you anymore.
09:02 p.m.
“You sure?” Jonathan’s arm was draped around your shoulders, and you just knocked it off as you pushed him in the direction of Nancy’s car.
“It’ll be alright, man. Go enjoy your girlfriend.” You winked at him.
He smirked back at you. “And I’ll let you enjoy your boyfriend.” You just flipped him off, not bothering to correct him anymore after his joke has been done through all the time you’ve been home already.
You closed the passenger door for him as he settled in his seat, Nancy already starting the car. Your siblings were going to spend the night at the Wheeler’s. You watched as Will, El and Mike practically slept over each other on the back seat, exhausted from four hours of lake fun, their cheeks pink because they rubbed off all the sunscreen. Steve’s BMW was further away and its honk was almost inaudible, muffled by the trees surrounding the lake. Didn’t take long until Nancy also took off, honking at you too, and you waved at them.
You felt him before you even heard him, approaching your back, and you tilted your head as you felt his fingers pushing your damp hair to the side and exposing the skin on your neck, feeling the cold of his rings touching your ear.
“Glad you could find some time just for me on your busy schedule, princess.” Eddie’s voice was low and husky right by your ear and you couldn’t suppress a shiver.
You turned to him in slow motion and found him looking at you hungrily. You snickered. “You know what I really wanna do now that we’re alone?” You asked and his eyes widened, the moonlight reflected on those brown pools. He just shook his head in question and your smirk grew.
09:47 p.m.
You blew off the smoke and repressed a cough, passing the dying joint to Eddie beside you. He finished it off with a couple more hits and put the tip away on a little bag you had earlier reserved as trash recipient.
Eyes closed, you felt his foot touching yours underwater as you laid down on the deck, cold wooden planks still wet from your previous fun feeling like heaven under your skin. The fog on your head from the weed was like a blessing, and you heard Eddie moving beside you before you felt his shoulder touching yours.
You sighed contently before opening your eyes and turning nothing but your head to your side, capturing him staring up at the starlit night sky.
“I’m also glad I can spend time with you. Just the two of us.” You answered, referencing what he told you previously. He didn’t look at you, but you felt his pinky finger intertwining yours and saw a genuine smile growing on his lips.
You thought once you went back to Cali, Eddie would soon forget about you and the time you had spent together - even though that was the furthest away from what you wanted. But, after your roommate from the students’ house you were now living in handed you Eddie’s first letter, you were relieved knowing your fears wouldn’t come true. You answered his letter and he just kept sending you more mail, and you kept answering them and so it went.
So you kept in touch the whole time you were away, mostly through letters because interstate phone calls were expensive - but you’ve called him on a stressful day or two, eager to hear his soothing voice; and he called you, exhilarated, when he learned he would be able to graduate after all.
Your letters started as merely friendly, platonic contact. Until Eddie was brave enough to bring up your kiss and the sex you had in his motel room - which you wanted to talk about too, but unlike him was not brave enough to. But you were brave enough to respond to him after he mentioned it, and your letters grew bolder and bolder every time, talking about how you wanted to see, touch, feel, and kiss each other again.
Once summer started you only talked to him again after you were already back in Indiana. Calling him from your mom’s phone was cheap enough to do once every three days as you planned when you would be able to actually see each other. You wanted to spend as much time as possible with your family, and he had his own commitments, so the only opportunity you had was… whole party lake day.
It was still a good day, anyway. You were happy.
You kept in silence for a few more minutes before Eddie sat up and stretched his arms above his head. He didn’t have his shirt on, not since he took a swim earlier and hadn’t covered his torso again. Your eyes instantly flew to the muscles on his back, all the way from his shoulder blades down to his hip dimples.
You unconsciously licked your lips.
He didn’t seem bothered or insecure about the scars all over his neck, chest, and stomach, contouring his skin in a pinkish tone. They looked like a painting’s highlights to you. It probably helped that no one commented on it throughout the day, except El who looked at him and Steve - comparing their scars - and murmured bitchin’, but you sensed they weren’t even supposed to hear it.
Fast enough to advert your eyes when he turned back, you faked as if you had been looking at the sky the whole time.
“Wanna go for a night swim?” He invited, and you stared at his face. As you were sitting up and considering his offer, he completed, eyebrows comically wiggling up and down: “Nakey-naked?”
You chuckled. “Aren’t you full of ideas, Munson?” He only shrugged at you with a smirk on his lips, getting to his feet and pulling his pants and underwear down - no hesitation whatsoever. You looked away, feeling your cheeks catch fire.
“C’mon sweetheart, nothing you ain’t seen before!” He laughed before cannonballing into the lake, soaking you up to your waist, droplets hitting your face. You made no movement towards joining him, and he approached your legs after a particularly long dive. He rested his forearms on your thighs and looked up at you with puppy eyes, his wet hair falling out of the bun. “Nothin’ I ain’t seen before too.” He said, tugging on the hem of your shorts.
You bit your bottom lip to suppress a grin. “And you wanna see it again that badly?” You asked, even if his answer was obvious by his expression, by his flickering eyes, by his enthusiastic nods. “Close your eyes.”
“Seriously?” He pleaded.
“Close your eyes, Eddie!” You giggled, and he obliged with the cutest pout you had ever seen.
Yeah, sure, he had seen you naked already, touched your body all over, and you weren’t exactly insecure, but you had never done that - skinny dipping - before. The restlessness of a new adventure was making you just a little uncertain.
You watched him bite his lip at hearing your clothes come off, and the heat of your body escalated. Not exactly the summer climate’s fault.
He had swam back a little from the edge of the deck, giving you space to enter the water. Unlike him you didn’t jump in, instead, you sat on the border and slowly sunk in, the water not as warm as it was a few hours prior. As you settled and the sounds around you diminished, Eddie opened his eyes. They twinkled.
The night was clear, although the moonlight was not enough to allow crisp sight of what was under the water, so you couldn’t distinguish each other’s naked bodies. It was still thrilling to know you were naked, though.
Before you thought about your actions, you were already approaching him slowly. His eyes widened more at every inch you eliminated between you and you could see the pink shade of his skin all the way from his cheeks to his collarbone. His curls were less defined by the weight of the water pulling them down, his crooked cut bangs sticking to his forehead.
The crickets cricketing on your back, fireflies lighting up the shores with their little dances, one lonely leaf floating in the space left between you two.
Summer was nearing its end.
As your fondness for Eddie was growing.
You tilted your head slightly as your fingertips reached his arms under the water, watched as he gulped and his shoulders shivered.
“Act all shy but you’re a menace, sweetheart.” His voice was low-toned and you grinned.
“We could call it even.” You shrugged, feeling his hands timidly contouring your waist, pulling you closer, as yours reached his shoulders. You had goosebumps, and you could feel he had them too.
“We could never be even. You’re… like a god or the universe or whatever, they just pulled you straight out of my dreams. And I can’t even believe you’ve decided to spend time with lil’ ol’ me.” He grimaced, a humorless chuckle out his lips. “Doesn’t feel balanced, doesn’t feel fair, cannot for the life of me understand what you see in me to keep gracing me with your… friendship.” That was a choice of a word.
You adored it when he rambled.
“Gotta give yourself more credit, Eds.” Your noses touched, his eyes fluttered and a gasp escaped him.
You adored his reactions to you.
You kept talking: “You’re funny.” A kiss on the tip of his nose. “You’re kind. You’re brave.” A kiss on each of his cheeks. “You’re so, so pretty.” A kiss on his jaw. His breath faltered. His hands grasped your hips firmly. “Will you kiss me?” You whispered, lips brushing his.
“Thought you’d never ask.” He whispered back.
You adored the way he looked at you.
His lips found yours completely and all the soft nature sounds around you were instantly muted. You didn’t need to talk anymore. You’ve talked enough through letters for four months, you’ve exchanged enough provocations throughout the afternoon. You just wanted to feel him.
There was no hesitancy as he pulled you closer, his hands traveling on your back, sending shivers up your spine. You gripped tightly on his damp hair and he hissed mid-kiss, the way his body pressed against you under the water making you dizzy.
Your feet were swinging, not touching the ground as Eddie dragged you both further to deeper parts of the lake, lips never once leaving yours, tongues twirling teasingly around each other. Your thighs trailing up on his, circling his waist, his hands daring down until they reached your ass to grope as hard as he could.
His breath mixed with yours, sighs escaping in between turnings heads, moans swallowed by each other’s mouths. It was a slow dance, sinful in the holiest way, the cold water and his calloused fingertips piercing your skin and soul equally.
You had only a few more hours of freedom in Indiana, but with Eddie’s hands holding onto you for dear life, his lips leaving yours to make their way down your collarbone, and your head thrown back to look at the stars and the moon as they blessed you, you were certain those would be the most enjoyed few hours freedom you had ever seen. Hours spent adoring him. And him adoring you.

Dearest Pantry Girl,
Cabin’s roof was finally finished this week. Me and Wayne are already settling into our new home, Steve helped us with the moving - the kids helped too, I mean, they were supposed to, but they just played and made fun of all my stuff and almost broke one of Wayne’s precious mugs from his collection, so I kinda grounded them after that.
It’s very pretty here. And quiet, Wayne loves the quiet. Birds chirping, rustling of trees and shit. He actually told me he might start bird watching, that’s insane, never thought he would get into this kind of thing. But I saw a book about birds on the library last time Dustin made me take him there, I might get it for Wayne one of these days.
I like that it’s very far away from everything. No one knows where we live, or how to get here without getting lost in the woods. I feel safe.
I told Wayne he should get the bedroom, since he allowed me to have the trailer’s bedroom ever since I was dumped under his watch. He wouldn’t let me though, so I have the room for myself again. Doesn’t hurt that it’s got a pretty view. Maybe you can visit on summer. I’ll even change the sheets for you.
Summer camp sounds rad. Hope you have a great time, I’m sure you’ll be a hell of a counselor. Lots of kids gonna get crushes on you - I know I did. Just don’t go around making too many friends and writing them letters after summer ends. I want exclusivity on that matter.
Kindly ask Argyle to send some ‘purple palm tree delight’ or whatever the fuck with you? That gave me the most insane high of my life. Wanna do it again. We could do it together!
Oh! My wounds are much, much better. They’re healing great, I don’t feel pain anymore, just a slight sensitivity around the bites’ areas. They’re also not as gross to look at… I’d like your personal input on that topic. No one else I’d rather have glancing at my shirtless bod, if ya know what I mean.
This letter is too long.
Kay, bye bye now.
See ya in a few weeks, milady. Can’t wait.
Sincerely,
Eddie The Banished.

Dearest Pantry Girl,
Hope your travel back was good and safe. I was so high I forgot to ask, but please send my thanks to Argyle for the weed! And try harder to convince him to come with you next time, he’s still owing me and Jonathan a bong session. In the meantime, I’ll try to convince Steve to join us when that session eventually happens.
Say hi to your roommate for me! I know she handed you this letter.
I really enjoyed our night together. It was fun and lighthearted, as it always is with you. I’m glad you stumbled upon me stealing cookies on that party. You’re a great friend. Special friend. ;) I never had this with someone, and I thought I would overthink it and ruin everything, or just run away like I’m used to, but you make it safe. And cool. So it’s cool.
Little Byers told us you’ll come back for Thanksgiving, and Harrington’s already planning a party at his house for the day after. Don’t worry, he said it won’t be a full-house party, but a friends-only-get-together. We could rent movies and gossip ‘till sunrise. Or I’ll plan a very bloody D&D campaign and force all of you to join me even though you all hate playing. I don’t care. I’ll forge a Paladin out of Steve yet.
Please answer this letter saying you’ll come. Pretty please?!
See ya in a few months, milady. Can’t wait!
Sincerely,
Eddie The Banished
