Today was a successful day! I've been dreaming of getting the Olympian Hiawatha from Katy for literally years (I think I first thought of it 2016 or 2017?), but it was always hard to justify. It's cheap per car, but not cheap in total, and I already have several Kato american train packages (Super Chief and Broadway Limited), and at well over a meter long each, they're not actually all that practical. But they are cool. Anyway, one of the german importers for Kato had sets of this at basically every train show, and it seems they finally wanted to get rid of them, so they were now heavily discounted: 100€ for the full nine-car set with display tracks. Well, that was not a hard decision.
I don't have the right locomotives yet, they didn't have those there. My options right now are to buy the FP7s from Kato, or wait until someone makes the Bipolars or Little Joes in N scale, maybe, eventually, some day. I do know one store in Germany that still has a very limited number of the FP7s in stock unless their website is lying. If I go that route, do I need an A-B-A set or is A-B enough? …do I want an A-B-A set? Will I put Digitrax decoders in them or solder myself? The last one's actually easy, soldering in normal decoders is easy enough, cheaper, and in my experience it works better.

WB MILW Challenger 1956 by iais_2000 Via Flickr: This is MILW Train 107, The WB Challenger-Midwest Hiawatha at Ferguson, IA in 1956. Ferguson was MP 295.6 on the Middle Iowa between Atkins and Perry. Notice the second unit, a B unit it looks like from the freight pool. Also you can see a dome in the background.

Color In A Grayscale World por Danial Por Flickr: On April 11, 1937, the American Locomotive Company held open house to show off the latest in locomotives, and Milwaukee Type Atlantic number 4 was part of that celebration. The 4 was fresh from the paint shop, with the Hiawatha Indian adorning the tender and HIAWATHA nameplate on the flank of the locomotive. The 4 was delivered to The Milwaukee Road in Milwaukee, Wisconsin shortly after, where it would receive finishing touches. In this photo by an unknown photographer 87 years ago today, we see the 4 spot getting steamed up outside of the Milwaukee Shops. The HIAWATHA nameplate on the flank of the locomotive has been replaced with a CHIPPEWA name plate for it's duties between Chicago and Milwaukee, along with service on the recently inaugurated Chippewa Hiawatha. In the cab of the 4 Spot, you can see the engine tender keeping an eye on water levels, steam pressure among his other duties, along with what appears to be some top brass on scene for the initial firing of one of the worlds most famous streamlined steam locomotives. The cost of the final Milwaukee Type Atlantic was $109,230. The number 4 is being held in place by wooden wheel blocking while being fired for the first time, while the company brass inspects her, along with other facets of the area. Had the 4 Spot survived, she would be 87 years old today on her first day of service for The Milwaukee Road, but retirement came in June, 1951. I took the liberty of meticulously bringing color to the beautiful Atlantic for this posting, although the original I have is a darkroom processed black and white image. This Patrol would always come out of Marion Yard westbound after supper or whenver train 64(later 220) got past Marion. It would work the various industries including two cement plants, Vigortone feeds, Nash Finch foods. Longview Fiber and Rock Island Millwork. This was big $$ for the Milwaukee right up til the end in 1980. Today all gone.

“The Milwaukee Road's Afternoon Hiawatha storms into its first station stop out of Chicago Union Station. I don't know what shutter speed my almost new Pentax Spotmatic was set at, but it was evidently not enough to avoid a little speed blur. It made me recall that my very first railfan trips to ‘duh Big Wunnerful City’ (those who grew up around CHICAGUH during the reign of Hizzoner duh Mayor Richard J. Daley will appreciate the reference) often started with an early morning ride from Glenview to Union Station on the Pioneer Limited from Minneapolis. In that early morning light - around 0630 - those engines would fly by the platform at what seemed like an impossible speed, brakes squealing, express and baggage cars creating their own windstorm as they swept by, coaches coming to a very reluctant stop with impatient uniformed crewmen poised to drop the stepbox on the platform as the train stopped, and an implication that if you wanted to ride, you'd better be ready to step aboard. This crew may be putting on the same performance; I don't doubt they were doing over 30mph and planning to stop about ten car lengths further. And they do it without roughing up the riders.”
