A short comic series. Sans had ketchup packets in his pockets. They broke open and now he needs to avoid taking his hands out of his pockets while commuting home (on the Surface). It goes from a casual inconvenience to absurd levels of “WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME”. I do still love this idea and plan on finishing it when I can;;

El Aetos y el Leon

Los destructores griegos Aetos D-01 y Leon D-54, pertenecían a la denominada clase norteamericana de destructores de escolta Cannon. Estos destructores estaban diseñados para desarrollar misiones antisubmarinas y la escolta de convoyes. Se encargaron 116 unidades de las que tan sólo se construyeron 72 para la marina de guerra de los Estados Unidos (US Navy) y seis para las Fuerzas de la Francia Libre.

El Aetos fue construido originalmente con el nombre de USS Slater DE-766 en los astilleros norteamericanos de Tampa Shipbuilding Co. Inc. en Florida, siendo botado el 13 de febrero de 1944 y entregado a la US Navy el 1 de mayo de 1944. El Leon cuyo nombre original era USS Eldridge DE-173 fue construido en los astilleros de Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Corp. en Port Newark (Nueva York), puesto a flote el 25 de julio de 1943 y entregado a la US Navy el 27 de agosto de 1943.

Características técnicas - Los buques de la clase Cannon

tenían un desplazamiento a plena carga de 1.620 toneladas, y sus dimensiones eran de 93,3 metros de eslora por 11 metros de manga y 3,5 metros de calado. Eran propulsados por cuatro motores diesel GM Mod. 16-278A de 6.000 shp. y motores eléctricos a dos ejes, su velocidad máxima era de 21 nudos y su autonomía de 10.800 millas náuticas a 12 nudos. Su armamento lo componían 3 cañones sencillos de 76/50 mm. Mk. 22, 1 cañón doble de 40 mm. Mk. 1 antiaéreo, 8 sencillos de 20 mm. Mk. 4 antiaéreos, 3 lanzatorpedos Mk. 15 de 533 mm., 1 lanzador Hedgehog Projector Mk. 10 antisubmarino, 8 proyectores de cargas de profundidad Mk. 6 y dos raíles para lanzamiento de cargas de profundidad Mk. 9. Dotación, 216 tripulantes.

Durante su carrera militar en los Estados Unidos ambos destructores participaron en misiones de escolta a convoyes y tan sólo el USS Eldridge se enfrentó una vez a un contacto de sonar, posiblemente un submarino enemigo, se enfrentó a él con sus cargas de profundidad pero sin resultado alguno de haber alcanzado a ningún objetivo bajo el agua.

El experimento FILADELFIA

Según cuenta el escritor y ufólogo Morris K. Jessup en su libro de “El Experimento Filadelfia: Proyecto Invisibilidad” de 1979 y a través de su testigo principal Carlos Miguel Allende, el USS Eldridge fue utilizado para probar una nueva tecnología de ocultación utilizando potentes campos magnéticos. Esta tecnología estaría basada en la teoría de la relatividad de Albert Einstein y en la teoría dinámica de la gravedad desarrollada por Nikola Tesla.

Al parecer el testigo del suceso Carlos Miguel Allende presenció a bordo del mercante SS Andrew Furuseth como el día 28 de octubre de 1943 se desvanecía y volvía a aparecer el destructor USS Eldridge de los astilleros militares de Filadelfia. Este experimento no sólo tuvo el resultado esperado, sino que también se consiguió de manera accidental teletransportar al destructor a 600 kilómetros de distancia en el puerto de Norfolk, con devastadores efectos físicos para los tripulantes del barco.

A partir de ese punto la polémica está servida, aunque a mi juicio el mayor experimento de todos fue el desarrollado tanto por defensores y detractores de este singular evento en su intento por demostrar cada una de las versiones existentes. Se han escrito innumerables libros, se han realizado incontables documentales televisivos y se han filmado películas, y el misterio del USS Eldridge sigue sin esclarecerse.

Sea como fuere, cuesta creer que un buque tan valioso para el gobierno norteamericano tan sólo por el hecho de haber sido sometido a este experimento, no se conservara ni se sometiera a más pruebas y experimentos y no se dudara ni un instante en enviarlo a la guerra. Más aún, una vez terminada la Segunda Guerra Mundial y bajo la Doctrina Truman el USS Eldridge fue transferido a una nación aliada, nación como Grecia y al que no le dio una misión de combate, sino de instrucción.

La transferencia del USS Slater y USS Eldridge

La Doctrina Truman de 1947 fue una medida creada por el Gobierno de norteamericano mediante la cual pretendían ejercer una presión positiva en favor de los Estados Unidos, en detrimento de la influencia opuesta del bloque soviético y comunista.

En el periodo comprendido de 1946 a 1949, Grecia se vio envuelta en una Guerra Civil, enfrentando al recién instaurado gobierno monárquico griego de Jorge II apoyado por los Estados Unidos y Reino Unido; contra el Ejercito Democrático Griego, fundado por el Partido Comunista de Grecia, y el Ejército Popular de Liberación Nacional con el apoyo de la Unión Soviética, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria y Albania.

Mediante ayudas económicas y militares a Grecia bajo el amparo de la Doctrina Truman, consiguieron inclinar la balanza en favor de la monarquía del rey Jorge II. La ayuda militar no terminó con la guerra, y en 1951 bajo un nuevo acuerdo de cooperación y defensa mutua, Grecia recibía cuatro destructores de escolta provenientes de la ayuda militar norteamericana, los:

Bajo esta misma doctrina y a través de otros acuerdos de defensa mutua y cooperación, fueron transferidos, alquilados o vendidos a otras naciones aliadas un gran número de los destructores de escolta de la clase Cannon.

Los países que recibieron más unidades fueron Francia con 8 unidades y Holanda con otras 6, también recibieron estos: buques Brasil, Corea del Sur, Filipinas, Italia, Japón, Perú, Taiwán, Tailandia y Uruguay. De todos ellos tan sólo uno se mantiene en servicio activo, el HTMS Pin Klao DE-413 de la Real Marina de Tailandia, con 75 años en activo desde que se puso a flote en el lejano 1943.

El destructor de escolta Leon D-54 (ex USS Eldridge DE-173), causó baja en la marina de guerra de Grecia el 15 de noviembre de 1992 y fue vendido para desguace en noviembre de 1999.

--- Se ha escrito mucho sobre el supuesto “experimento de Filadelfia”, pero pocos saben que la nave que supuestamente fue el objeto de un extraño experimento y sus secuelas – el U.S.S. Eldridge – hoy forma parte de la marina griega. Charles Berlitz reveló que el Eldridge fue el barco utilizado para el experimento que tomó lugar en 1943. (1) En su libro “Without a Trace”, Berlitz detalla que el U.S.S. Eldridge acabó siendo un donativo para la marina griega en 1951 como parte de la ayuda militar estadounidense durante la posguerra, pasando a convertirse en el destructor A/T León, en servicio con otras tres naves – Aetos (águila), Lerax (halcón) y Panthir (Pantera).

Existe información anecdótica sobre algo extraño que supuestamente tomó lugar cuando el destructor desapareció un plazo de dos días durante los ejercicios militares realizados en el mar Jónico durante la década de los ’50. No existe documentación para la narrativa, pero los rumores subsisten: se dice que después del incidente, dos “especialistas” estadounidenses se llevaron piezas metálicas del barco para someterlas a análisis. (2)

En el libro de Berlitz y Moore, el Experimento de Filadelfia, publicado en 1979, se dijo que el U.S.S. Eldridge fue entregado a la marina griega bajo el nombre de León, pero al menos un año antes de la publicación del libro, comenzó a difundirse una historia sumamente rara – que el navío de guerra que había sido el sujeto del “experimento de Filadelfia “había sido el destructor Aetos, nave hermana del León – y que esporádicamente se producían fenómenos a bordo, incluyendo problemas con los radares, sistemas de radiocomunicación, visualización de imágenes, etc. (3)

Según otra anécdota, un suboficial mayor de la armada griega, durante una visita de su nave a los Estados Unidos, se acercó a las autoridades para decirles que estaba consciente no sólo de la verdadera identidad de la nave, sino también de los experimentos que se realizaron a bordo en 1943. Esto habría sucedido en 1979, y los estadounidenses trataron de impedir su salida. Hubo intervención diplomática especial que le permitió salir, pero desafortunadamente aún carecemos de información sobre el incidente. (4)

En primer lugar, sabemos que el U.S.S. Eldridge es propiedad de la marina griega, ya sea bajo el nombre León o Aetos. En segundo lugar, prácticamente en las laderas del monte Pentélico en las afueras de Atenas, tenemos la base estadounidense de Nea Makri, bien equipada con dispositivos electrónicos especiales. En tercer lugar, se ha inaugurado un nuevo camino que comunica la comunidad de Palaia Pendeli con Nea Makri. En cierto punto de la carretera se han producido anomalías gravitatorias, así como varios incidentes de alta extrañeza – incluyendo OVNIS y paracriaturas – que se han manifestado en la misma zona. En cuarto lugar, se emprendieron obras enigmáticas en la cueva de Daveli en 1977. Esta pequeña cueva se localiza cerca de la zona en que se producen los fenómenos mencionados anteriormente, y que representa el epicentro de eventos paranormales. Estas obras, que incluyeron excavaciones y la abertura de túneles subterráneos en la caverna, fueron de alto secreto y supuestamente “asunto de seguridad nacional” conforme a lo manifestado por entonces ministro de defensa, Evangelos Averoff. (6)

Durante el plazo de tiempo en que Grecia estuvo retirada de la OTAN (1974-1980) no pudieron haber emprendido obras secretas en la cueva de Daveli a menos que se tratara de algo muy importante – tan importante que no pudo haberse realizado en otro lugar. ¿Sería tal vez la presencia de las anomalías gravitatorias, y la consiguiente oleada de anomalías en la zona?

Mientras tanto, durante el verano de 1977 y simultáneamente con las labores en el Pentélico, se realizaron grandes mejoras en el equipo de la base de Nea Makri. (7) Los dispositivos originales fueron sustituidos por nuevos, enviados directamente desde EE. UU. Testigos afirmaron haber visto camiones de una empresa de hormigón entrando y saliendo de la base. Supuestamente se realizaban construcciones bajo tierra en los túneles recién excavados, y los vecinos de comunidades aledañas presenciaron el transporte de materiales desconocidos en grandes contenedores. Llegó a decirse que contenían aparatos electrónicos especiales para equipar las instalaciones subterráneas.

Si aceptamos la posibilidad de que los experimentos de electrogravedad aún prosiguen, el sitio ideal tal vez sería una zona en la que el entorno pudiese contribuir a la manifestación de fenómenos relacionados. Adi-Kent Thomas Jeffrey, citada en el libro The Bermuda Triangle (1973), manifestó: “hace algunos años la oficina de investigaciones navales de los EE. UU. (ONR) auspició las investigaciones del físico John Caristoiou sobre el problema de la gravedad”. El estudio se titulaba “Los dos campos gravitatorios y la propagación de ondas gravitatorias”.

El doctor Caristoiou propugna, desde una perspectiva puramente matemática, que puede existir una fuerza gravitatoria diferente sobre las zonas marinas que es distinta y aparte de la gravedad que conocemos – una especie de segunda gravedad. Semejante fuerza tal vez pueda surtir efecto sobre la superficie de la tierra o del mar, así como encima y debajo de ambas, que sea totalmente distinto a la gravedad real. Estos efectos, anteriormente desconocidos, podrían ser detectados fácilmente por nuestras técnicas altamente avanzadas para explorar la naturaleza física de nuestro planeta”. (8)

A continuación presentamos noticias posiblemente relevantes de la prensa griega:

• 21 julio 1979: “Un gran terremoto sembró pánico y confusión, acompañado por una fuerte explosión ayer justo antes de la medianoche, creando temor entre los habitantes de las comunidades de Mesogia.” (todas ellas cercanas a la base de Nea Makri). “…en el hotel Golden Dawn se agrietaron las losas, mientras que se astillaron las ventanas en el cine Avra.” Nadie ofreció una explicación sobre el incidente, que no fue de origen sísmico.

• 3 enero 1980: “Se están produciendo temblores curiosos a diario en la zona de Messara de la isla de Creta. Los temblores siempre suceden a la misma hora, a eso de las 7 p.m., un hecho que elimina la posibilidad de que sean sismos normales. La zona afectada por los terremotos abarca 100 kilómetros cuadrados. A los habitantes les preocupa no solo la intensidad y frecuencia de los sismos, sino también el manto de ocultamiento que ha caído sobre el asunto…”

La base Nea Makri se caracteriza como NAVCOMMSTA (estación de comunicaciones navales) pero su equipo ciertamente se puede utilizar para otras actividades además de las comunicaciones de siempre. La base Gourmes cerca de Iraklion en Creta tiene 22 oficiales y 650 suboficiales técnicos – más personal de lo que dictarían sus necesidades. Si examinamos cuidadosamente el personal de la base, llegamos a la conclusión de que la base es una de las más significativas no sólo en el Mediterráneo, sino en el mundo entero.

El 5 de septiembre de 1980, el New York Times describió la base como una enorme ciudad subterránea con grandes oficinas y repleta de aparatos electrónicos. La parte secreta de la base es una habitación bajo el control de la National Security Agency (NSA). El comandante griego de la base tiene vedada la entrada a esta zona”. (11) Según informes de prensa del 28 de enero de 1980, 45 nuevos agentes de la CIA – especialistas en equipo informático para la ingeniería electrónica – llegaron a Grecia entre diciembre de 1979 y enero de 1980, el plazo que coincidió con los extraños temblores.

Parece existir una relación entre Creta y Nea Makri. En 1969, un individuo que trabajaba en Democritus, el centro de investigación nuclear de Grecia cerca el monte Pentélico, afirmó que existían “extraños vórtices magnéticos en movimiento” en los alrededores de dicho monte. (12) Diez años más tarde, surgió otra historia parecida sobre “anomalías magnéticas y gravitatorias” en Creta, especialmente cerca de la base estadounidense de Gournes. (13) En estos tiempos, la base de Gournes exigía tanta fuerza eléctrica (con fines desconocidos) como lo consumido por toda la ciudad de Iraklion. ¿Qué clase de aplicación requería tanta electricidad? ¿Se realizan en la actualidad experimentos electrogravitatorios en Grecia?

Lính bắn tỉa Mỹ nguy cơ lép vế trước Nga

Dù thống trị lĩnh vực bắn tỉa ở Trung Đông và Bắc Phi trong nhiều năm, các xạ thủ Mỹ dường như đang bị quân nhân Nga vượt mặt.

Một báo cáo năm 2016 của Lục quân Mỹ cho biết lính bắn tỉa Nga "thiện chiến hơn nhiều so với những gì mà lính bắn tỉa Mỹ đối phó trong 15 năm qua". Lầu Năm Góc thừa nhận "quân đội Nga vượt xa Mỹ" về hỏa lực chính xác ở cấp tiểu đội trong "cuộc cạnh tranh giữa các siêu cường".

Trang thiết bị bắn tỉa là lĩnh vực đầu tiên quân đội Mỹ đối mặt thách thức ngày càng lớn từ Nga, biên tập viên Jared Keller của Task&Purpose nhận định.

Bộ binh Mỹ đang sở hữu các mẫu vũ khí chính xác gồm súng trường bắn tỉa M40, hệ thống bắn tỉa bán tự động (SASS) M110, Súng trường Bắn tỉa Tăng cường (ESR) M2010 và súng trường bắn tỉa M107 (Barrett M82A1). Những mẫu súng này trong nhiều năm vượt trội so với súng trường bắn tỉa Dragunov, với tầm bắn 700 m, được quân đội Liên Xô và Nga biên chế đại trà.

Tuy nhiên, quân đội Nga gần đây biên chế súng trường bắn tỉa SVCh Chukavin và Orsis T-5000 Tochnost, với tầm bắn lần lượt là 1,4 km và 1,6 km, nhằm thay thế mẫu Dragunov từ thời Liên Xô theo chương trình hiện đại hóa lực lượng.

"Người Nga đã đuổi kịp Mỹ về những vấn đề thiết yếu như công nghệ và đạn dược", theo Christian Wade, cựu xạ thủ bắn tỉa thuộc sư đoàn 2 thủy quân lục chiến Mỹ. "Người Nga mua công nghệ của chúng ta hay các nước châu Âu, hoặc đơn giản là sao chép chúng".

Lầu Năm Góc đang tìm cách đối phó về mặt công nghệ. Lục quân và thủy quân lục chiến Mỹ đã được trang bị Súng trường Xạ thủ Cấp tiểu đội (SDMR) M110A1 và Súng bắn tỉa (DMR) M38 cùng Hệ thống Bắn tỉa Bán tự động Gọn nhẹ (CSASS) M110A1 và súng trường Mk.13 Mod 7 nhằm tăng tầng bắn và độ chính xác của lính bắn tỉa và lính thiện xạ trong tiểu đội.

Lục quân, thủy quân lục chiến và Bộ Tư lệnh Tác chiến Đặc biệt Mỹ (SOCOM) đều đã lên kế hoạch biên chế súng trường bắn tỉa mang tên MRAD của Barrett. Lục quân Mỹ muốn dùng MRAD thay thế cả súng M107 lẫn M2010, còn thủy quân lục chiến muốn dùng nó để thay thế toàn bộ mẫu súng trường bắn phát một hiện có.

MRAD sử dụng đạn 7.62×51 mm NATO, .300 Norma Magnum và .338 Norma Magnum với tầm bắn trên 1,4 km, hãng sản xuất cho biết. "Đó là một trong những khẩu súng trường mạnh mẽ và hiện đại nhất", cựu lính bắn tỉa Wade nói.

Tuy nhiên, hệ thống mua sắm khí tài của quân đội Mỹ lại làm chậm tiến trình trang bị súng trường bắn tỉa mới thay cho mẫu cũ. Wade cho biết Súng trường Tự động Bộ binh (IAR) M27 được thử nghiệm tại Afghanistan gần 10 năm trước, song mới chỉ được biên chế đại trà gần đây.

"Lầu Năm Góc không thích nghi đủ nhanh với các mối đe dọa từ Nga và Trung Quốc", Wade nói. "Với cách thức hoạt động hiện nay của hệ thống mua sắm vũ khí liên bang, chúng ta không thể theo kịp một số quốc gia khác".

Bên cạnh tiến bộ về công nghệ vũ khí, lính bắn tỉa Nga còn có lợi thế về mặt học thuyết. Trong khi lính bắn tỉa Mỹ chỉ tham gia các khóa huấn luyện thường kỳ hoặc đảm nhận nhiệm vụ trinh sát, các quân nhân Nga được "thử lửa" trên chiến trường Syria trong những năm gần đây.

Báo cáo năm 2016 của Lục quân Mỹ thừa nhận các phương pháp đối phó với lính bắn tỉa địch từng được Mỹ áp dụng thành công trong cuộc chiến chống khủng bố tại Afghanistan và Iraq giờ đây "không hiệu quả với tính linh hoạt của xạ thủ Nga".

Trong khi Nga liên tục huấn luyện xạ thủ, lục quân và thủy quân lục chiến Mỹ lại không coi trọng lực lượng bắn tỉa, xếp bắn tỉa vào nhóm kỹ năng phụ thay vì nhóm cần mài dũa vì giá trị cao của nó. Wade nói chỉ khoảng 30% vị trí trống trong lực lượng bắn tỉa của thủy quân lục chiến Mỹ được bổ sung quân số từ các khóa huấn luyện bắn tỉa trinh sát.

"Nếu bạn không biến ai đó thành lính bắn tỉa toàn thời gian, bạn sẽ không có đủ người chuyên nghiệp để đối phó với lính bắn tỉa Nga, dù công nghệ là tương đương", Wade nói. "Bắn tỉa là một loại hình nghệ thuật và khoa học, nhưng giờ chúng ta chẳng cho phép một binh sĩ thủy quân lục chiến nào trở thành lính bắn tỉa thực thụ".

Vũ khí và vật liệu tốt hơn dành cho lính bắn tỉa là chưa đủ để quân đội Mỹ đuổi kịp Nga trong lĩnh vực này, cựu thiếu tướng lục quân Robert Scales nhận định.

Scales cho rằng ưu thế của xạ thủ bắn tỉa thông thường của Mỹ "bị hạn chế nghiêm trọng" do "chức năng độc quyền" của vị trí này làm tiêu hao sức mạnh chiến đấu của các đơn vị nhỏ.

Định kiến lỗi thời về lực lượng bắn tỉa là vấn đề chính đối với quân đội Mỹ, Scales nhận định. "Các trường lục quân có xu hướng thích súng trường bắn tỉa bắn phát một. Tuy nhiên, súng bắn tỉa bán tự động không hề thua kém về độ chính xác", Scales nói.

Cựu sĩ quan này nhận định quân đội Mỹ cần mở rộng kỹ năng, kiến thức và công nghệ để thay vì chỉ có một xạ thủ bắn được mục tiêu trên 1.200 m trong mỗi đại đội, toàn bộ binh sĩ trong đơn vị đều có thể bắn trúng mục tiêu ở khoảng cách 600-1.000 m.

"Kết hợp sức sát thương áp đảo này với khả năng tiêu diệt mục tiêu ở khoảng cách từ 1.000 m trở lên bằng cối hoặc tên lửa chống tăng dẫn đường, ta hoàn toàn đảo ngược lợi thế hỏa lực mà kẻ thù có thể có", Scales cho biết.

Biên tập viên Jared Keller cho rằng lính bắn tỉa Nga sẽ tiếp tục gây ra khó khăn cho đối thủ của họ. Bán đảo Crimea là một "môi trường huấn luyện độc đáo" không nơi nào có cho các xạ thủ Nga.

Tuy nhiên, lính bắn tỉa của lục quân và thủy quân lục chiến Mỹ có thể chứng tỏ mình là các xạ thủ đáng gờm trên chiến trường trong tương lai, bằng cách tăng tốc nâng cấp vũ khí trang bị và thay đổi quy trình huấn luyện.

"Tới khi đó, sẽ có thể nói lính bắn tỉa một nước có lợi thế hơn nước khác hay không", cựu xạ thủ bắn tỉa Wade nói. "Lợi thế của người Nga vào lúc này không dựa vào vũ khí hay đạn dược mà là nhân sự và huấn luyện, những yếu tố đáng ngại hơn".

Our Stay Home. Make Mods. event has now come to close, I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. In Week 4 (27th April - 3rd May) we saw [b]310[/b] entries - a new high! Firefly, MK11 & Rainbows

Here are once again with the fabulous Nerds for the weekly episode of hijinks and merriment. This week we look at topics that will hopefully entertain you, perhaps educate you, perchance even make you laugh. As usual we have our three Nerds, idiots, nutjobs, wackjobs, funny farm contenders, or as we like to say, your hosts. Bucky, Professor and the DJ. Bucky is our slightly older, kind of grumpy Nerd, who dislikes Mumble rappers, reality TV and generally stupidity. Professor our younger Nerd who likes gaming, long walks to the camp fire, and his Switch when on the bus. Last but not least, we have the DJ, the resident Droid that no one is looking for, who likes anime, games and laughing.

First topic up this week is about some new illustrated novels, or omics, from the Firefly franchise. The DJ is challenged to finally watch the series to help him discover his inner Browncoat, will he be brave enough to walk down the street in a hat like that and show he aint afraid of nothing? We will find out, but by my pretty blue bonnet if he doesn’t we will aim to misbehave and cause mischief.

Next up we look at the stress and traumatic conditions developers are suffering through to bring us new games. With reports of people developing PTSD, and hiding this fact so they can get jobs. This is seriously messed up, what these people are going through is downright wrong and needs to be looked at. Also Buck has a rant about the need to look after each other because he is sick and tired of morons putting profit before people.

Last up Buck brings us an article about Rainbows. No, he hasn’t become a hippie or something drastic. He just felt we needed to take a moment and look around us and admire the simple things, you know, kind of like smell the roses and noticed the politicians as people (we think they are, but don’t hold us to that – Ed.). So we have 20 facts about rainbows and one of which is that the Greeks thought there were only three colours in the rainbow.

We follow this with the usual look at the games we have been playing this week and give you a run down on them. Concluding with the episode with the regular Shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and events for the week that we all love. As always, take care of each other and stay hydrated.

Hawke served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Wills from 1980 to 1992 and was Labor's longest serving Prime Minister. Bob Hawke was born in Bordertown South Australia. Crowsnest – the strike carrier’s eye in the sky

Crowsnest is the name for the project to provide a new airborne early warning system for the RN. Sea King Mk 7 helicopters operated by 849 Naval Air Squadron currently operate in this role and provide what is now called Airborne Surveillance and Control (ASaC). They are the last Sea Kings remaining active in UK service but are due to go in 2018, by which time this type will have served for nearly 50 years.

The common sense solution

Crowsnest will not involve the purchase of any new aircraft. Instead, the RN will receive 10 equipment kits for fitting to some of its 30 Merlin HM2s. The £269M contract for these kits was finally placed in January (including £9M worth of spares). Development of the system has been underway for some time and flying trials have started using a Merlin HM1 test aircraft. The project will provide work for more than 200 people in the UK; Lockheed Martin (Havant), Thales (Crawley) and Leonardo Helicopters (Yeovil).

The Crowsnest system is an evolution of the well proven Cerberus tactical sensor suite and the Searchwater 2000 radar that currently equips the Sea King Mk7s. The radar is mounted in an inflatable bag on the port side of the helicopter and can be raised by rotating through 90º for landing. The Crowsnest system will employ a slightly adapted mounting but will work in a similar way. The Cerberus system has been successfully evolved over many years and is able to monitor up to 600 contacts simultaneously. The Searchwater radar is able to ‘look down’ and track small, fast-moving targets over land and water or ‘look up’ and track multiple aircraft. The “baggers” as the ASaC helicopters are affectionately called, proved their worth in Afghanistan, clocking up 3,000 flying hours and over 800 missions providing over-watch for NATO forces on the ground. At sea they have successfully provided reassurance for the RN and its allies in multiple operations since 1982.

The exact details of the range and capabilities of the new system are obviously not in the public domain but it will feature an improved human interface, better target identification and hardening against electronic jamming. The MoD has selected a very low-risk and affordable solution, building upon existing technology and fitting it on an aircraft that is already in service that will not need a new logistics or training pipeline.

In the current fiscal climate, Merlin/Cerberus was the only realistic option. Lockheed Martin had proposed a more sophisticated Merlin-based option using a podded AESA radar, derived from the F-35 but it was obviously more expensive. Many would have liked to have seen a V-22 Osprey based ASaC solution (tilt-rotor aircraft). This potentially offers better range and surveillance coverage than a helicopter. Unfortunately, this only exists on paper as a concept and would have added more time and cost to develop, as well as adding an aircraft to the inventory the UK does not (yet) possess.

The correct choice has probably been made but before the order was placed, the MoD had spent more than 17 years and around £40 Million on the Crowsnest project in an excessively drawn out “assessment phase”. In stark contrast to this lumbering process, the original helicopter-borne AEW concept was developed on a shoestring in a just 11 weeks and rushed into service in the wake of Falklands War.

In service, in time, mind the gap

The first Crowsnest kit is due to be delivered in October 2018 and fitted to an operational aircraft by June 2019. Initial Operating capability for the ASaC Merlins will be in 2020, although this is likely to consist of just 2 or 3 aircraft. Effectively there will be an approximately 18-month ‘capability gap’ where the RN has no operational AEW capability between 2018 and 2020.

824 Naval Air Squadron provides training for ASW Merlin aircrew and will also take on responsibility for ASaC training. Some 849 NAS personnel have already begun to convert from the Sea King to the Merlin, ready to take over the new Crowsnest aircraft when they begin deliveries next year. Full Operating Capability for Crowsnest (Ideally at least 6 aircraft and trained aircrew) should be achieved in early 2022, slightly ahead of the FOC for HMS Queen Elizabeth in the Carrier Strike role in 2023.

Kits not aircraft

With just 30 Merlin HM2 airframes available to the RN, it is unfortunate that the Crowsnest aircraft will have to be drawn from this fleet. To add to the pressures and delays, each HM2 will have to be withdrawn from service while Leonardo spends around 15 weeks adding wiring and mountings for the Crowsnest kit. Fitting out all 30 aircraft will have to be spread over several years.

Theoretically, the Crowsnest kit can then be installed in any Merlin in a process that should take around 24 hours, either ashore at RNAS Culdrose or in the spacious hangar of the QE class aircraft carriers. A Merlin changing from the anti-submarine role to ASaC will have its dipping sonar, sonobuoy carousel and ASW consoles removed before the ASaC equipment is added. It is expected that between 6 and 8 Merlins will have the ASaC kit fitted at any one time, with spares available at sea should an ASaC Merlin become unserviceable or lost. This appears to offer some useful flexibility as the carriers will need continuous ASaC capability most of the time. Unfortunately switching precious ASaC platforms to ASW (or vice versa) is far from ideal. The Merlin may have lower maintenance requirements than the Sea King, but 13 aircraft are being replaced by 6-8 kits fitted to aircraft in the existing fleet, a further significant and unwelcome fall in the total number of available airframes.

Crowsnest will be a small upgrade in capability but having proved very useful in non-maritime environments, RAF ISTAR assets are stretched and we need to properly protect our aircraft carriers, there is a very strong case for expanding the number of aircraft, not of reducing them. The obvious solution is to utilise the 10 ‘spare’ Merlin HM1 airframes that have been mothballed for some time, even if not upgraded to HM2 standard. Even the modest funds to refurbish these aircraft do not seem to be available and the RN is again put in a position where it must rob Peter to pay Paul.
