Brand Partnership with Skylum
I now have a brand partnership with Skylum. This is the software company that was originally known as Macphun, and they made the Machphun Creative Kit photo editing software that I originally used when I first started editing my photos. After they rebranded to Skylum, they released new photo editing software called Luminar to replace the Creative Kit, which I used to use and am preparing to use…

You might have guessed (after all it’s in the title of the blog!) that I love all things Mac. You might also know, if you have been here before, that I am a photographer. Well, we photographers are mostly digital rather than film shooters, even though film (or analogue as some call it) is having something of a revival.
Be that as it may, digital means (not obligatory) that we need a way of enhancing our shots or at the very least convert them from RAW, unless we shoot only Jpegs. Now, over time there have been photo editors (software that is) that have come and gone. Even Apple killed off the much-loved Aperture (shame on you Apple). However, Adobe has been around almost from the very beginning of the digital revolution, with Adobe Photoshop it’s premier product, joined more recently by Lightroom. With Adobe moving it’s product line to the cloud in the shape of Adobe Creative Cloud and the subscription model, others have entered the market to provide alternatives that don’t require a monthly subscription. One of those companies is Macphun, soon to become Skylum (more on that in a minute).
Macphun have released a whole suite of apps to provide editing tools for photographers. These include Creative Kit, Tonality, Noiseless, Intensify, Snapheal and FX Studio. Their leading products are Luminar and Aurora HDR, both now updated as Luminar 2018 and Aurora HDR 2018. Right now, if you click on any of the links above you will be taken to Macphun’s Black Friday Offer pages. It’s worth experimenting with the different frames, and you can also adjust the width of each individual frame to suit your preference. Some are quite subtle and understated, while others are a little more garish. Here you’ll find a variety of frames which you can add to your image. Next to the area of the panel that says Presets, you’ll see that it also says “Frames”. It’s a very simple process, you can change the size and style of the brush that you’re using to create the mask, and when you’re ready simply press “Done” to apply the mask. Click on “Edit Mask” and you’ll be taken to another dialogue box where you can erase parts of the filter if you only want to apply it to certain areas of the image. You’ll also be able to create an effect mask from this dialogue box. To the right of the image you’ll see there is a dialogue box which allows you to adjust the level of the filter (from 0-100%) depending on how strong you want the effect to be. If you find a few you like, this is a good way of grouping them together without having to remember where they all are in the longer lists. Simply click on any of the presets and the style will be applied to the image straightaway, very quickly without waiting for the edit to be applied.Īny of the effects can be added to your favourites by clicking on the small star icon which be found in the bottom right hand corner of any of the effects thumbnails. There’s groups such as “Cross Processed”, “Photo Styles”, “Vintage” and so on. You can filter the different effects by type, or choose to show all of the effects at once. You can open raw format files if you prefer - most camera’s proprietary files are supported.Īfter you’ve chosen a photo, you’ll see your photo, and a group of Effects presets which are ready to choose from along the bottom of the window. A list of recent photos that you have opened will also appear there to make it quick to find recent images. Once any photo is open, you’ll be able to open another one by clicking File > Open from the top menu. You can save projects as you go along if you want to swap between different images though. You won’t be able to open more than one image at a time, unlike Photoshop, so keep this in mind. The first thing you need to do is choose the picture that you want to work with from your computer. Just like many of the other MacPhun apps, FX Photo Studio has some powerful editing tools, but it has been designed to be as easy to use as possible.
#Fx photo studio for computer install#
If you’ve paid and installed other apps from the Creative Kit already and it’s not the first app you install, you should bypass this step.Īgain, if it’s the first piece of software you’re installing from the Creative Kit you’ll be prompted to install the software as a plugin to any compatible software you already have on your machine - for example Adobe Photoshop CC, or Adobe Photoshop Elements.
#Fx photo studio for computer activation code#
When you open the software for the first time (if you don’t have any other Creative Kit apps), you can choose to start your trial, or you can input the activation code if you have paid for the software. Once you’ve downloaded FX Photo Studio, just drag the software’s icon into your Applications folder to start the installation process.
#Fx photo studio for computer full#
This is a good way to start getting to grips with the software, but you need to bear in mind that you won’t enjoy the same full functionality as when you’ve downloaded the full version.Īlternatively, you can download and pay for the full version, but if you’re not completely satisfied with how MacPhun FX Photo Studio runs you can get a full refund within 30 days.
#Fx photo studio for computer free#
You can download the software directly from MacPhun’s website.Īs with other apps, there’s the option to download a free 15 day trial. Installing FX Photo Studio is a very easy process, as is the rest of the MacPhun creative kit. A starter’s edition is also available, which only includes Snapheal, FX Photo Studio and Intensify for £70. You can buy FX Photo Studio on its own for £20, or part of the Creative Kit suite for £89.99, which features six different photo editing apps. Like other MacPhun software, you can use it on its own, or as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop CC, Elements and Lightroom. Part of MacPhun’s Creative Kit, FX Photo Studio is designed to allow you to apply filters and effects to your shots.

I'm asking around for tablet suggestions for my mother, what would you recommend for a professional artist with not much experience in digital drawing?
Wacom is the best brand for tablets and cintiqs, but it’s also the most expensive. It was once the only brand anyone would recommend, but now I think there are others that are okay. I’ve never tried them so I can’t give any recommendations about alternative brands. To illustrate my point as to how good Wacom is, the cintiq I own is nearing 6 years old and I still use it, it’s that good.
If you aren’t going Wacom, my advice is to stick with a medium or medium small tablet that has good reviews on the brand for her first one. Larger ones I feel are unnecessary as you can zoom in when you draw with any drawing program.
As far as Wacom goes, I don’t like the super small bamboo things. I feel like, if you’re gonna spend the money, at least get an intuos. Cintiques on the other hand, are very expensive and I wouldn’t recommend buying them for first time digital artists because you have to be really serious if you’re gonna drop the money on that. They also aren’t very portable, or at least there weren’t when I bought mine, so you’ll need a solid place to use it as well, like a desk. I think they’re a lot flatter and lighter now, but still less portable than a regular tablet.
As far as Wacom’s intuos tablet lineup goes. It looks like there’s two main versions now. A pro and regular. From what I’ve looked up, Pro’s have more resolution than the regular, and if I were to buy a tablet for myself right now, I’d pick the pro over the regular version, but I think they would both work fine and have the ability to produce the same high quality art. I wouldn’t be upset if someone bought me the cheaper regular intuos because it’s still almost as good. As far as the two pro choices go, the intuos pro paper upgrade seems unnecessary and I wouldn’t pay the extra money for it unless you can think of a scenario where you’d need to have a half assed digital copy of your physical drawings or writing for some reason.
I would recommend buying the tablet at medium size, unless there’s some reason you need a super small or large tablet.
As far as all the different versions go for the regular intuos tablets, Photo, Art, Comic, and Draw refer to bundled 3rd party software that comes with it.
Intuos PhotoWindows: Corel PaintShop Pro X8 and Corel Aftershot Pro 2Mac: Macphun Creative Kit (Tonality Pro, Intensify Pro, Snapheal Pro, Noiseless Pro) and Corel Aftershot Pro 2Intuos ArtWindows and Mac: Corel Painter Essentials 5Intuos ComicWindows and Mac: Clip Studio Paint Pro and Anime Studio Debut 10Intuos DrawWindows and Mac: ArtRage Lite
Intuos Pro models come without any bundled software.
My thoughts on the bundles are, I use mostly Corel Painter and some Photoshop when I draw, and I know for a fact the Corel Painter Essentials 5 that comes with the Intuos Art is a stripped down, but still usable version of Corel Painter that you can get really cheap. So I’m assuming all the bundled software is just cheap stuff you could buy separately on your own and shouldn’t make or break your decision.
My final advice is, often artists get frustrated the first time trying tablets, as there is a learning curve. I’ve used both cintiqs and tables and they both have the same capacity to produce the same high quality art once you get comfortable with them, so never worry if you aren’t willing to throw down money for a cintiq. A tablet will work just fine.

Macphun has announced it is now accepting pre-orders for the latest version of its high dynamic range image editing software Aurora HDR. Aurora HDR 2018 is scheduled for release on September 28 and will be launched with a big, impressive set of new features, improved current features, new and improved tools and filters, and a more sophisticated user interface as well as a 200% speed boost.
Aurora HDR 2017 will be available for Mac and Windows, and both versions can be pre-ordered right now at a 60% discount along with bonuses.
As with Macphun’s other products, Aurora HDR 2018 can be used in its standalone version or as a plug-in or external editor for a range of popular image editing applications, supports raw files as well other common file formats and exports to PSD (Mac-only), TIFF, PNG, GIF, JPEG and JPEG 2000 as well as to other Macphun products.
Aurora HDR 2018 User Interface, Tools and Features
Tumblr media
Macphun’s Aurora HDR 2018 high dynamic range image processing software is the most sophisticated and feature-rich of its kind, and has persuaded me to create a growing proportion of my stills photography work in HDR. Each version of Aurora keeps getting better.
Tumblr media
The HDR brackets import dialog offers Ghost Reduction and Chromatic Aberration removal options, both of which I choose especially when shooting HDR brackets handheld or of scenes containing moving objects. Aurora HDR does a great job of ghosts removal, giving me the confidence to shoot almost anything anywhere as HDR even when I am not carrying a tripod.
Tumblr media
I first started seriously looking into HDR imaging when working on a short video project involving applying the Ken Burns effect on a long series of stills images shot in hard sunlight in the tropics. I was disappointed by the inability of non-HDR photographs to retain a long dynamic range, leading to near-black shadows without enough detail to justify a camera move into those areas. The HDR software of the time was not sophisticated enough for what I visualized. Then, Macphun released the first version of Aurora HDR.
Tumblr media
Aurora HDR 2018 comes with plenty of realistic and beyond realistic presets, and a straight, unedited HDR multi-bracket merge might be exactly what you want without any further image editing. The choice is yours.
Tumblr media
One of the most exciting new features in Aurora HDR 2018 for is its manual Lens Correction tool. When using previous versions of Aurora, I would export TIFF files to DxO ViewPoint 3 to apply automatic profile-based lens corrections. Having Lens Correction in the new version means avoiding that extra, external step to keep your files fully editable within Aurora HDR 2018 alone. I am hoping that lens-based corrections will find their way into future versions of Aurora and Luminar.
Tumblr media
Aurora HDR 2018’s new Transform Tool allows corrections to perspective and other attributes in a way that needed to be done by exporting TIFF files to external editors like DxO ViewPoint 3. Now we can keep it all within Aurora and eliminate those extra steps.
Tumblr media
Aurora HDR 2018’s History panel is another very welcome new feature in this version, allowing you to backtrack and refine your edits in the same way as History panels in other image editing software like Photoshop.
Before and After, Naturalistic and Enhanced
With Aurora HDR 2018’s new capacity to create an acceptably naturalistic HDR merge before you apply presets or controls, you cam choose a wide range of looks for each image from mildly realist through to wildly surrealistic, as illustrated by the following images from Macphun’s Aurora HDR 2018 press pack.
If Aurora HDR 2018’s over one hundred tools and editing features are not enough, you can export your images directly into Luminar as a plug-in for even more editing tools, presets and more extreme looks again.
Lone Yucca, White Sands, by Alik Griffin
Moraine Lake, by Jim Nix
Dubai, by Dima Sytnik
Using Aurora HDR
Based on the lovely landscape and travel photographs most software developers use to promote the products’ capabilities, I am not their typical user.
My photography practice centres on documentary genres in monochrome and naturalistic colour, on portraiture, on scene-setting cityscapes and street photography to keep my visual reflexes in order in between documentary projects.
I have yet to produce a sunrise or sunset landscape like the many fine examples Macphun uses to show off its excellent Aurora HDR and Luminar raw processing and image editing software.
But I do use both Macphun products for all the genres and subjects un which I work, as well as the company’s Creative Kit, and I am increasingly shooting portraits and product shots as multiple bracket HDR images.
Although I have some excellent LED lights for stills and video in the form of a Rotolight Neo 3 Light Kit, I often need to quickly grab but good quality portraits or product shot with camera and lens only, handheld.
Since its inception Aurora has been adept at handling handheld HDR brackets, automatically erasing the effect of movement between frames aka “ghosting”.
Each successive revision of Aurora has made it easier to avoid HDR’s more blatantly surreal effects, adding controls and presets permitting more subtlety, increased realism.
Aurora HDR 2017 was key in that regard, persuading me to shoot almost all my product shots as HDR image, all the better to deep dive into the textures, materials and construction of the objects depicted.
Early forays into handheld HDR portraiture bore encouraging fruit and the arrival of Aurora HDR 2018 with even more improvements in more real than real image processing now have me planning an environmental and head-and-shoulders portrait project.
The photographs in this project will initially be handheld and consist of three to five brackets, but I am itching to try seven and even nine brackets under challenging lighting conditions to learn whether that will reveal even more information and a visual richness not achievable by any other means.
Having tried out 3 Legged Thing’s Equinox Leo micro-traveller tripod some time ago, the same company’s taller Albert travel tripod is looking appealing so that I can stand face-to-face with my subjects or a little higher art lower as demanded by an environmental portraiture approach.
I will be working on new HDR photographs in several of my favourite genres over the coming weeks and look forward to sharing the results in other articles on Aurora HDR 2018 as well as using them to illustrate articles on production hardware.
Macphun Announces Aurora HDR 2018 for Pre-Order Right Now for Release September 28, on Mac and Windows Macphun has announced it is now accepting pre-orders for the latest version of its high dynamic range image editing software Aurora HDR.

New Macphun Luminar "Neptune" now for Windows too!
New Macphun Luminar “Neptune” now for Windows too!
I’ve been using Macphun for a few years now, starting with their Creative Kit, a set of plugins for Lightroom and Photoshop. I found their Noiseless, Tonality and SnapHeal plugins to be especially useful.
I also really liked their Aurora HDR application, which is I think the best HDR app for Mac. The latest Aurora HDR 2017 edition is fantastic, especially if you’re not a fan of the…

Luminar Neptune Introduces An AI-Filter, Accent
Macphun released an update to Luminar today - Luminar/Neptune, as it's called. If you've not tried out Luminar, check out what it can do with my set of FREE tutorials posted on my Luminar Learning Center. In about 30 minutes, I'll have you up and running.
Offer code: SDP10
And hey... if you are a Windows user, a public beta of Luminar is coming for Windows!
So what goodies are in the newest version of Luminar? The highlights are:
Accent - AI-filter – Uses artificial intelligence to create stunning images with a single slider movement, tapping into the power of dozens of filters.
Quick & Awesome workspace – A workspace consisting of the Accent AI, Saturation & Vibrance and Clarity filters. Great for achieving fast results in a fun and easy way.
Plug-in integration with Creative Kit and Aurora HDR 2017 – Seamlessly access Macphun’s other photo editing tools you own with Luminar as the host application
Brush, Gradient and Radial Gradient tools – Dramatically faster performance yields smoother selective editing.
Vignette filter – Addition of Vignette Styles, Place Center and Pre- and Post-Crop modes deliver even more flexibility to this popular photo finishing tool.
Memory management – Increased overall performance for large files and 5+ simultaneous open images.
User Interface changes – Extensive improvements to in-app animation and mode transitions make for a more pleasing editing experience.
Crop tool update – Added the ability to specify custom crop ratios.
Local history – Provision for reviewing separate history while in Transform, Denoise, Clone & Stamp modes helps optimize editing.
The Accent filter is really interesting. I'm on the road at the moment. I have only briefly experimented with the Accent filter. I can see how useful it will be for quickly enhancing photos that need just a little kick.
Another nice addition is using other Macphun apps as plugins to Luminar. The puzzle piece icon on the right hand toolbar is where you access those. I tried a round trip through Aurora HDR. The Aurora edits are placed on a new layer in Luminar.
This update is a FREE update for all current users of Luminar. To celebrate the update, Macphun is running a deal for new customers. Skylum has released Tonality Mega B&W Pack, a massive free collection recreations of the looks from Tonality, the company’s legacy black-and-white aka monochrome plug-in cum standalone application named Tonality CK.
Tonality CK is part of the Creative Kit 2016 collection from the days when Skylum traded under the name of Macphun.
The Tonality Mega B&W Pack has been created for Luminar, Skylum’s image editing and raw conversion powerhouse application cum plug-in, available in versions for macOS and Windows.
Skylum’s film simulation subset of the Tonality Mega B&W Pack presets pack for Luminar.
I have been hoping for some time that the many excellent film simulations, photochemical toning looks, HDR renderings and more would find their way from Tonality CK into Luminar so the arrival of the Tonality Mega B&W Pack for Luminar is welcome indeed.
The Tonality Mega B&W Pack can be traced back to the Nik Collection’s Silver Efex through Creative Kit 2016’s Tonality CK component via the Nik Software company, several of whose former employees joined Macphun.
Google bought Nik and thus the Nik Collection, apparently for the sake of the company’s Snapseed mobile and desktop image editing application.
Google discontinued the desktop version, sadly, then sold Nik Collection to DxO where it is being developed as a set of Photoshop plug-ins and soon, hopefully, as a plug-in for DxO PhotoLab.
The free Tonality preset collection for Skylum’s Luminar image editing software
Skylum’s Luminar is undergoing development in leaps and bounds with an artificial intelligence-driven Sky Enhancer filter being released shortly, followed not long afterwards by the long-awaited Luminar Libraries module aka media management application that will be released free.
Recent and coming Luminar upgrades are being built with AI technologies developed by Skylum side project Photolemur, an application useful in its own right especially when batch processing large sets of images from events.
I am very excited by the potential of the Tonality Mega B&W Pack for processing raw images I visualized as monochrome when shooting.
Although several image editing applications and plug-ins contain film simulations, can import film simulation styles  and presets or are based entirely upon them, having them contained within Luminar in the form of the Tonality preset pack is handy for keeping it within the same application rather than jumping from one to another and back again.
Tonality Mega B&W Pack contains ten preset categories and over 170 monochrome looks and styles:
Tonality Street
Tonality Vintage
Tonality Toning
Tonality Dramatic
Tonality Film Emulation
Tonality Outdoor
Tonality Portrait
Tonality Architecture
Tonality Basic
Tonality HDR
I hope that the Skylum team will look into releasing emulations of great colour films of the past as well as a range of silver-based and non-silver printing processes.
Meanwhile I am excited by the prospect of trying out the Tonality Mega B&W Pack, especially in combining emulations of some of my favourite classic monochrome films with emulations of some of my favourite monochrome split-toning processes.

How to use MacPhun plug-ins with Luminar 1.2 Neptune
The Luminar 1.2 update has brought a whole bunch of useful additions and enhancements to MacPhun’s clever image-editing application. One of these is support for MacPhun’s own Creative Kit plug-ins. Macphun Accent: one filter to rule them all
The Accent AI Filter is part of the new Luminar Neptune – a major update to Macphun’s best-selling photo software. It’s a photo filter powered by artificial intelligence technology. Welcome to a brave new world!
Accent is the name of the new photo filter from Macphun. If you’ve been in video and photography long enough, you know that accent lighting focuses light on a particular area or subject, being used to help lead the eye of viewers to things you want them to see in the frame. Accents can be explored in different ways, sometimes as a subtle enhancement, even through the use of colored gels, to organize the hierarchy of elements within the frame.
Macphun’s photo filter, Accent, seems to follow the exact same logic. The Accent AI Filter in Luminar uses artificial intelligence to analyze different areas of an image based on its structure, objects, dark and light zones, colors and other parameters. As a user moves the slider, the filter intelligently and automatically “understands” what each area on the photo is lacking and improves it. Moving the slider can also adjust the intensity of changes, making the picture look more natural or revealing a more dramatic look, depending on the desired effect.
Macphun presents Accent as the smart filter that spares you from moving multiple sliders. While I praise the idea, I must admit, being old school, I am always afraid of many of those modern day technologies, that while making photography wizardry accessible to more people, sometimes seem to give us a “one size fits all” solution. Hopefully, this is not the case, something I will be able to try when the Luminar version for Windows comes, next July.
Accent AI Filter, in the mean time, is available for Mac users, as part of new Luminar Neptune – a major update to Macphun’s best-selling photo software. The most significant innovation in Luminar Neptune is exactly this new photo filter powered by the artificial intelligence technology developed in-house by Macphun’s Research and Development Lab.
According to Macphun, “the new Accent AI Filter allows anyone to create stunning images with a single slider instead of using dozens of adjustments and controls. It takes just a second and one swoosh of a slider to remarkably improve a photo.”
To put it simply: the Accent AI Filter in Luminar is a substitute for dozens of traditional controls like shadows, highlights, contrast, tone, saturation, exposure, details and many others. It eliminates tedious manual editing for hobbyists who want superb quick results and creates a fantastic foundation for further advanced image manipulation for pro photographers.
“Our mission to make complex photo editing tasks simple and fun led the team at our R&D Lab to explore Artificial Intelligence technology for image enhancement,” said Kevin La Rue, Vice-President at Macphun. “The Accent AI Filter emerged as a ground-breaking way to make perfect images instantly, incorporating the power of dozens of filters into one convenient tool. This is something other photo software is missing; and what’s more important, it’s something that all photographers will greatly benefit from,” concluded La Rue.
Luminar Neptune also introduces a new workspace called Quick & Awesome. As the name implies, the workspace consists of 3 essential filters which quickly create fantastic results: the aforementioned Accent AI Filter, Saturation & Vibrance and Clarity. Using the Accent AI Filter gives users amazing instant results, however if there is still fine-tuning to be done, the other two filters can quickly help improve the photo without any extra effort.
Luminar Neptune includes many other updates: plug-in integration with Aurora HDR 2017 and Creative Kit allows users to seamlessly access their favorite features from Macphun’s other products. Faster masking/brushing, an improved Vignette filter and better memory management are among other notable changes.
The latest update of Luminar is available, as mentioned, for Mac only. In July , Macphun will be launching a “public beta” of Luminar for PC to give Windows users the first taste of the powerful all-in-one photo editor for creating bold images in minutes.
