Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi fue una política india nacida en Allahabad en noviembre de 1917 que ejerció como primera ministra de la India entre 1966 y 1977 y nuevamente desde 1980 hasta su muerte en 1984.
Hija y heredera política del héroe nacional indio Jawaharlal Nehru, fue la segunda gobernante que mas tiempo ejerció el cargo de primer ministro  la primera mujer en hacerlo.
Primero años
Su padre fue un abogado descendiente de una familia acomodada en la India y educado en el Reino Unido, tuvo una participación destacada en el proceso de independencia de la India.
La carrera política de su padre la mantuvo lejos de él durante su infancia y fue educada en prestigiosos colegios en la India, Suiza y Reino Unido.
En 1942 regresa a la India y contrae matrimonio con Feroze Gandhi quien no tienen ningún parentesco con Mahatma Gandhi y procrean dos hijos. Fue a partir de las infidelidades de su esposo que Indira se muda a la residencia de su padre quien a partir de entonces funge como su confidente, que es cuando comienza su carrera política.
Historia.
En 1964 tras la muerte de su padre, y bajo el nuevo gobierno, es nombrada ministra de información y radiodifusión.
Pronto sus habilidades parlamentarias y su estilo populista además de un eficiente sistema propagandístico la llevan a ocupar el puesto de secretaria general del partido del congreso.
Al morir el primer ministro en turno en 1966 Lal Bahadur Shastri, los diferentes líderes del partido consideraron poner a un líder que consideraban dócil, por lo que pensaron en la inofensiva Señora Gandhi, por ser portadora de una importante dinastía, asumiendo el cargo de primer ministra en un momento crítico en la historia del país, pues la guerra Indo-Pakistaní había comenzado apenas unas semanas antes.
Durante la guerra se estima que 10 millones de refugiados huyeron a la India, causando inestabilidad financiera en el país, lo cual provocó graves roces internacionales y confrontaciones políticas entre India y Pakistan, y a pesar de ello, Indira no frenó el recibimiento de inmigrantes causando roces internacionales entre el gobierno estadounidense bajo la presidencia de Richard Nixon, quien junto con Henry Kissinger consideraron esta política como irracional e irresponsable.
Debido a la tendencia izquierdista del gobierno de Indira Gandhi, Estados Unidos decidió apoyar a Pakistán.
Como repuesta Indira Gandhi firmó el tratado de amistad y cooperación con la Unión Soviética preparando tropas indias y desplegando 93,000 soldados al este de Pakistán, logrando con el apoyo popular una victoria militar en 1971, dando lugar al nacimiento de Bangladesh una “república independiente” que en realidad era un satélite de la India.
Esta victoria le otorgó a Indira Gandhi el estatus de heroína y la transformó en una primera ministra respetada y popular.
La caída de Indira Gandhi comenzó después de que la India ganase la guerra contra Pakistán en 1971, en donde el tribunal superior halló a Indira culpable de corrupción electoral en las elecciones de 1971.
En 1975 Indira proclamó un estado de emergencia, ordenando la detención de sus opositores quienes mas tarde formarían el partido Janata, y en 1977, el partido de Indira perdió las elecciones frente a la Janata recuperándolo en 1980 tras obtener el triunfo de los comicios en un nuevo congreso, un partido que había creado tras la escisión del Partido del Congreso.
Muerte.
En junio de 1984, en un intento de acabar con el terrorismo sij y los intentos separatistas del Punjab, ordenó la que fuera llamada “Operación estrella azul” con la finalidad de desalojar a su líder y a sus seguidores en la region, lo que provocó la muerte de su líder y  de muchos peregrinos y civiles, causando graves daños a su templo.
Algunos meses después de estos hechos Indira Gandhi fue asesinada por dos miembros de su guardia personal de origen sij en su residencia en Nueva Delhi. Contaba con 66 años de edad.

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi fue una política india nacida en Allahabad en noviembre de 1917 que ejerció como primera ministra de la India entre 1966 y 1977 y nuevamente desde 1980 hasta su muerte en 1984.
Hija y heredera política del héroe nacional indio Jawaharlal Nehru, fue la segunda gobernante que mas tiempo ejerció el cargo de primer ministro  la primera mujer en hacerlo.
Primero años
Su padre fue un abogado descendiente de una familia acomodada en la India y educado en el Reino Unido, tuvo una participación destacada en el proceso de independencia de la India.
La carrera política de su padre la mantuvo lejos de él durante su infancia y fue educada en prestigiosos colegios en la India, Suiza y Reino Unido.
En 1942 regresa a la India y contrae matrimonio con Feroze Gandhi quien no tienen ningún parentesco con Mahatma Gandhi y procrean dos hijos. Fue a partir de las infidelidades de su esposo que Indira se muda a la residencia de su padre quien a partir de entonces funge como su confidente, que es cuando comienza su carrera política.
Historia.
En 1964 tras la muerte de su padre, y bajo el nuevo gobierno, es nombrada ministra de información y radiodifusión.
Pronto sus habilidades parlamentarias y su estilo populista ademas de un eficiente sistema propagandístico la llevan a ocupar el puesto de secretaria general del partido del congreso.
Al morir el primer ministro en turno en 1966 Lal Bahadur Shastri, los diferentes líderes del partido consideraron poner a un líder que consideraban dócil, por lo que pensaron en la inofensiva Señora Gandhi, por ser portadora de una importante dinastía, asumiendo el cargo de primer ministra en un momento crítico en la historia del país, pues la guerra Indo-Pakistaní había comenzado apenas unas semanas antes.
Durante la guerra se estima que 10 millones de refugiados huyeron a la India, causando inestabilidad financiera en el país, lo cual provocó graves roces internacionales y confrontaciones políticas entre India y Pakistan, y a pesar de ello, Indira no frenó el recibimiento de inmigrantes causando roces internacionales entre el gobierno estadounidense bajo la presidencia de Richard Nixon, quien junto con Henry Kissinger consideraron esta política como irracional e irresponsable.
Debido a la tendencia izquierdista del gobierno de Indira Gandhi, Estados Unidos decidió apoyar a Pakistán.
Como repuesta Indira Gandhi firmó el tratado de amistad y cooperación con la Unión Soviética preparando tropas indias y desplegando 93,000 soldados al este de Pakistán, logrando con el apoyo popular una victoria militar en 1971, dando lugar al nacimiento de Bangladesh una “república independiente” que en realidad era un satélite de la India.
Esta victoria le otorgó a Indira Gandhi el estatus de heroína y la transformó en una primera ministra respetada y popular.
La caída de Indira Gandhi comenzó después de que la India ganase la guerra contra Pakistán en 1971, en donde el tribunal superior halló a Indira culpable de corrupción electoral en las elecciones de 1971.
En 1975 Indira proclamó un estado de emergencia, ordenando la detención de sus opositores quienes mas tarde formarían el partido Janata, y en 1977, el partido de Indira perdió las elecciones frente a la Janata recuperándolo en 1980 tras obtener el triunfo de los comicios en un nuevo congreso, un partido que había creado tras la escisión del Partido del Congreso.
Muerte.
En junio de 1984, en un intento de acabar con el terrorismo sij y los intentos separatistas del Punjab, ordenó la que fuera llamada “Operación estrella azul” con la finalidad de desalojar a su líder y a sus seguidores en la region, lo que provocó la muerte de su líder y  de muchos peregrinos y civiles, causando graves daños a su templo.
Algunos meses después de estos hechos Indira Gandhi fue asesinada por dos miembros de su guardia personal de origen sij en su residencia en Nueva Delhi. Contaba con 66 años de edad.
