And so it begins ...

We, in Monmouth Diocese, have been talking about Ministry Areas for quite a few years now — the joining-together of local parish churches into a larger, strategic entity for the purpose of building better outreach, mutual support, and pastoral care in our area. In Bishop Cherry’s diocesan plans, our new ministry area — currently dubbed only by its number, “Newport No. 2” (of five in the Newport Archdeaconry) — will consist of the parishes of Alway, Caerleon, Christchurch, Lliswerry, Maindee, and St. Julian’s.

At long last, the work begins on this new way of organising, doing, and living parish life together. We know that questions will naturally abound amongst the people, and so we are pleased to welcome you to Two’s News, a newsletter & blog aimed at fostering good communication between the local congregations and the ministry area structures as they come into place.

Through this newsletter, the Clergy Team and the Ministry Area Transition Team (more on these in a moment) seek to provide you with print and electronic communication on a regular basis. The purposes for this are to: (1) include you in what is happening, why, and how; (2) introduce the parishes and to one another and to the clergy team; (3) unfold and explore with you the principles underneath the changes we face; (4) foster discussion amongst church communities; (5) listen and respond to feedback and, where possible, allay the (perfectly understandable) apprehension that some people may well be feeling.

In a word, our hope is that the process of becoming a Ministry Area will be transparent, prayerful, generous, and inclusive, and that this newsletter will provide an important space for achieving that goal. Welcome, all.
