BOTD: Golden-collared Manakin
Tumblr media
Photo: Ad Konings
"A small, plump, and short-tailed manakin with a restricted range in Panama and western Colombia. Males are striking with a bright yellow throat and collar, a black cap, and a black back with greenish rump and belly. Females are entirely olive-green with red legs and dark bill and eye. Occurs in dense understory of forest, second growth, and edges. Males gather in groups to display for females; otherwise most likely to be found at a fruiting tree or sitting quietly in the lower levels of forest."

November 13, 2021 - White-collared Manakin (Manacus candei)
These manakins are found in forest edges and thickets from southeastern Mexico to Costa Rica and western Panama. They eat fruits and some insects, picking food items from foliage in short flights. Males perform elaborate courtship dances to attract females, clearing a display ground and hopping between upright branches while making clicking sounds with their wings and puffing out their throat feathers. Females build shallow cup-shaped nests in forked branches, incubate the eggs, and care for the chicks alone.

Golden-collared Manakin, Manacus vitellinus. The Golden-collared is found in subtropical and tropical lowland wet forests in Panama and Columbia. Makes gather in leks and display when female, colored a dull green stops by. This male is displaying by extending his chin feathers outward, looks like a short beard. No female was near, he was just practicing!

New paper out: magic manakin muscles
Tumblr media
Open-access Advance Article available in Endocrinology!
In muscle physiology, there is a trade-off so prominent that it’s just about universal: a muscle can be specialized to be very fast, or very strong-- but never both. How is it, then, that the golden-collared manakin (Manacus vitellinus) has wing muscles that seem to defy this trade-off?
Tumblr media
This little bird performs a remarkable display behavior called the roll-snap, where it rapidly beats its wings together to produce a mechanical sound that is similar to a fast drumroll. To do this, it contracts its scapulohumeralis caudalis (SH) muscle as much as 100 times a second. This is the fastest recorded tetrapod muscle contraction, and should theoretically come with some cost to force production-- and yet, it doesn’t.
In our latest study, we use temporary androgen manipulations to show that blocking androgen receptor in the SH muscle depresses the muscle’s ability to be strong and fast. This, combined with previous work showing that the manakin’s SH has a high level of AR expression, suggests that peripheral androgen action helps alleviate local costs of high-speed muscle performance.

Photo of the Day - The distinctive, principally yellow and black plumage of the male Golden-collared Manakin (Manacus vitellinus) certainly makes this bird stand out in its preferred habitat of secondary woodland. The female differs in plumage: drab green, acting as the perfect camouflage for its habitat, minimizing danger during the incubation of eggs or young.
This incredible photo was taken by Rockjumper Chief Network Officer and tour guide, George L. Armistead, in Panama.
