Content - Questions to answer
What ideas do you explore when making art?
I start usually with;
material
emotion
death/human body
form
What do you start with? idea, topic, emotional response? media, material, etc.?
a form or material & develop the idea from there
looking at other artists and works - then developing my own interpretations and imitations with different materials and context.
looking at my previous artworks & looking at the process I've used then find a way to develop the content or process to make it more interesting
How do these answers influence the outcome of your work?
when using form & material as a starting point to my artwork, the final product generally turns out extremely different to the initial idea. Generally turns out more interesting than the initial thought.
Form/Process- 350 words
What words? (are these even form words?)
scale
space
bodily
natural
How do formal languages of;
2D media (line, tone, colour, contrast, texture, scale)
3D media (materials, shape, scale, space, mass, volume)
Time based media (movement, editing, speed, rhythm, image/sound relationships, screen or projection installation)
Contribute to the process of making the work?
2D -
Texture of material is very important and the line/visual effects it creates on the page
contrast of;
negative space & positive (when working in grayscale)
colour & background
large scale drawing - creates confronting scale and detail to clearly see
3D -
materials are so important - from being a starting point to lots of my art. Using different, malleable, interesting materials is important to exploring the extent that they can be used/pushed.
scale - generally like to be larger and confronting in the sense of what is being seen is not the norm
Time based media
have not created any digital media works that I have at all been interested in or have spent lots of time and effort on as it is not a medium I am well versed in or particularly interested in
Context- 100 words
What words?
minimalism?
realism?
abstraction?
industrialism?
What artworks & artists have you researched?
suggested;
marc bijl
makes very political works but adds a sense of humour by using light colours and different set materials under his text
I really enjoy the way he creates art - some of it gruesome, some of it explicit but always has a structure to the work and is never ‘messy’

Elisa Sighicelli
Liu Ding - has shown at QAGOMA
Robert Rauschenberg
mainly sculpture - but his sculpture seems to reflect his 2D works - really interesting how they mimic one another
Anya Gallaccio
love that her work decomposes - is natural but dark and subdued colours
How have these been important for you own thinking & observations about current art practices?
not as of yet - as I haven't really looked at them closely but I think I will start to look at developing my own work and ideas from their works.
