This fall the exibition Feed me. Cheat me. Eat me. by fabulous artist and filmmaker Janis Rafa will open at Eye. Expect tail wagging and seductive gloominess. I am co-curating the show and curating the public program. You are cordially invited to the opening on October 14! 🐾

Uit eigen tuin

Ooit waren mens en natuur een eenheid. Er was toen niet zo veel keuze maar alsnog voelen veel mensen zich verbonden met de natuur met vaak een verwijzing naar de vanzelfsprekendheid van het in de natuur zijn. Het belang voor behoud van de natuur wordt nu weer volop gezien. Miljoenen Nederlanders hebben zich aangesloten bij een natuur- of milieuclub. Nog meer landgenoten gaan elke zondag geheel vrijwillig naar buiten, de natuur in. Zij waarderen die natuur om wat ze is, niet om wat ze hun oplevert.  Maar liefde voor de natuur komt ongetwijfeld ook voort uit weemoed en nostalgie; uit een verlangen naar iets wat eens volop aanwezig was en in weinig generaties goeddeels werd vernietigd.

Natuur inspireert altijd al. Behalve als een inspiratiebron wordt de natuur ook vaak gebruikt in of met kunst. Een vanzelfsprekende combinatie en tegelijkertijd ook niet. In Artfest: de natuureditie wordt dit eigenlijk hele mooi samengevat. Er komen verschillende makers en sprekers aanbod rondom de samenwerking van kunst en natuur. Het feit dat de vraag ‘wat is kunst?’ en de vraag ‘wat is natuur?’ niet in een woord te beantwoorden zijn, brengt ze voor mij al bij elkaar. In deze aflevering van Artfest, ergens uit 2016, wordt heel mooi verwoord hoe onlogisch de combinatie lijkt. Marian Cousijn noemt voorbeelden van kunstwerken die bestaan uit of door natuur in musea. Dit terwijl in een museum kunst juist stabiel en berekenbaar moet zijn, terwijl planten dit nu eenmaal helemaal niet zijn. Hierdoor lijkt het juist heel ver uit elkaar te liggen. En waar kunst voort komt uit de menselijke geest, ontstaat natuur juist zonder menselijke ingrepen. De tal van kunstenaars die op hun eigen manier met deze combinatie werken is geweldig. De boodschap of doel van de makers zijn ontzettend verschillend. Doordat er geen een antwoord op die vraag van wat is kunst of natuur nu eigenlijk, lijken al die makers een tal van goede antwoorden te geven die ver uit elkaar liggen. In de Wunderkamers van de 16de eeuw, in de welbekende schilderijen van Caspar David Friedrich, in het werk van herman de vries, Jason Decaires Taylor en eigenlijk ook dat van mij.

On/kunst

On/kunst have asked me to give a mini-lecture on conceptual art. Theme of the evening: ‘Begrijpt iemand hedendaagse kunst nog wél?’ (Is there anyone who still understands contemporary art?). The event will take place on February 14 at LAB111, Amsterdam. Can’t think of a more romantic way to spend Valentine’s. 🌹

Poems for Earthlings

Go see Poems for Earthlings by Adrián Villar Rojas, an exhibition on which I worked at Oude Kerk. It’s overwhelming, immersive, wonderful and also quite controversial. On view until April 26.

Animals in contemporary art

I have been invited to speak at a symposium at Utrecht University on animals in philosophy and art. I will talk about the role of (living) animals in modern and contemporary art - from the snails in Dalí’s Rainy Taxi to the chimpanzee Congo, whose paintings from the 1950′s were auctioned for over $25.000 a few years ago.

FULL MOON II: Classic video art at FC Hyena

For the second edition of FULL MOON, we delved into the archives of LIMA, the Dutch platform for media art. We selected works by the pioneers who started to experiment with video art in the 1960s and ‘70s - think Marina Abramović, Marinus Boezem, Jan Dibbets, Ger van Elk, Nam June Paik and Ulrike Rosenbach.

FULL MOON: Video art at FC Hyena (SOLD OUT)

Let’s be honest: in a museum or gallery, you don’t always have the time to watch all video works from beginning to end. That is why, together with curator Robbie Schweiger, I am organizing FULL MOON: a monthly evening during which we will show video art at the ultra comfy cinema FC Hyena in Amsterdam Noord. 

Swap the uncomfortable gallery bench and dirty headphones for soft pillows, a glass of nice wine and delicious food, and enjoy video art in a cinema. 

The first edition takes place on January 30. With works by Kévin Bray, Anna Dasovic, Maurice van Es, Ana Maria Gómez López, Kubilay Mert Ural, CHE Onejoon, Zamir Suleymanov and Marieke Zwart.

On Rineke Dijkstra

After seeing a Rineke Dijkstra retrospective at museum De Pont, I wondered why so many people - myself included - are such big fans of her work. I spoke to a museum director, someone who was portrayed by Dijkstra, and the artist herself to find out what makes to work so good.

Good Intentions

Together with Anne Ruygt and Bertan Selim I curated the exhibition Currents #6: Good Intentions at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture, Maastricht. We visited graduation shows of 18 art academies and selected our favourite works. The result: an exhibition bringing together personal stories and political statements dealing with identity, youth and cultural traditions.

Goya’s Disasters of War

Modigliani at Tate Modern

The exhibition Modigliani, on which I worked as a curatorial fellow, is now open at Tate Modern. It runs until the 2nd of April. I wrote the chronology for the exhibition catalogue, which is available through the Tate Shop.

Essay on Duchamp

For my thesis I did research on how Marcel Duchamp’s art influenced the practice of exhibition making. The essay based on this research won a Dutch thesis prize. The article is now published in the latest issue of the academic journal RELIEF, which is dedicated to Duchamp. Artfest III: De Natuureditie

It’s time for a new edition of Artfest, the unpretentious talk show about art! This edition’s theme is universal yet urgent: nature. On curating

Intrigued by the popularity of the word ‘curated’ in popular consumerist culture and on social media, I looked into the origin of the word and the rise of the autonomous curator in the context of contemporary art. Read this if you want to know why Kanye West calls himself a curator and why the Dutch use cureren (to cure) instead of curateren (to curate).
