ABOUT PABLO COSGAYA
Professor of Typography at FADU, the University of Buenos Aires, from 1994 onwards. Founder of Cosgaya Diseño (Rosario, 1991), which he runs with Marcela Romero. He is designer of Proceso Sans (1996, published by García Fonts), Patagonia (1994, a sans typeface done with Héctor Gatti), CDIcons (2003, with Marcela Romero, published by Pixiefonts) and Loreto (2004, with Eduardo Rodriguez Tunni), an award-winning typeface published by Tipo. Loreto got its inspiration from the typography of the Manuale ad Usum (1721), printed by Jesuit missionaries who worked at the beginning of the XVIII century with communities of "Guaraná" natives from the Northeast region of Argentina. He created the signage and slogan typeface Sansita (2011, Google Font Directory and Omnibus Type: sansita won an award at Tipos Latinos 2014).
In 2013, Pablo Cosgaya and Dani Raskovsky co-designed a wood carving typeface called Bahiana---perfect for lettering on a Caribbean rum shack. Bahiana was published by Omnibus Type. Download from Open Font Library. Bahiana won an award at Tipos Latinos 2014.
Together with Sergio Jimenez in 2013, Pablo designed the free vernacular poster typeface Barrio (see also Open Font Library). Barrio was extended in 2019 by Sergio Jimenez and Pablo Cosgaya to Barriecito.
Pragati Narrow (2015, Omnibus Type and Open Font Library), derived from Chivo, is a free Google web font family that covers both Latin (in the 19th century American grotesque style with vertically or horizontally cut terminals) and Devanagari. the Devanagari was developed by Marcela Romero, Pablo Cosgaya and Nicolás Silva. In 2015, Pablo Cosgaya and Nicolás Silva co-designed the rounded sans Latin / Devanagari typeface Jaldi (free at Google Web Fonts and Open Font Library) which is based on Asap and Ancha developed earlier by Pablo Cosgaya and Hector Gatti in collaboration with Andres Torresi. Cosgaya and the Omnibus Type team co-designed the free rounded sans family Asap from 2011-2015. The main feature of Asap is that across different styles, characters maintain their widths. Asap (2012, Google Web Fonts) is based on Ancha (designed by Pablo Cosgaya and Hector Gatti), and has been developed with the collaboration of Andrés Torresi: it is a contemporary sans with rounded corners. Asap is accompanied by the free Asap Symbol font (2015), designed by Tania Quindos, Marcela Romero, Elena Gonzalez Miranda and Pablo Cosgaya. Pablo Cosgaya's Asap Condensed followed later in 2015. Asap Condensed won an award at Tipos Latinos 2016.
In 2015, Pablo Cosgaya, Eduardo Tunni and the crew of Omnibus Type published the text typeface Manuale.
In 2019, Daniela Raskovsky and Pablo Cosgaya released Bahianita. They write: Bahianita has rustic, fresh and casual look, as if carved in wood. Its structure is ideal for composing condensed titles and short texts. OpenType offers alternative glyphs and programming to avoid repeating equal uppercase or equal numbers. Bahianita offers 647 characters (1234 glyphs) and diacritics with support for over 219 Latin languages (including Guarani).
Museo Moderno (2019) is an avant garde geometric sans by Pablo Cosgaya, Hector Gatti and Marcela Romero at Omnibus Type specially created for the new identity of the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art (Museo Moderno, AR).

“Something Burning”
Eddie Jimenez sat at the dinner table. He hadn’t even changed out of his work clothes. The table was bare but for two candlesticks in the center. Eddie turned his head as Marcela entered from the kitchen and set down a white, ceramic plate in front of him. She was wearing a yellow dress and her favorite apron with hair tied up into a bun.
“We’re having meatloaf tonight,” Marcela said, smiling.
She placed a wine glass down for him. Eddie took the glass and held it up so that the light caught on its spotless surface.
“Thank you,” he smiled, then felt it fade. Eddie sniffed the air and looked at Marcela.
   “Do you smell something burning?”
Eddie Jimenez sat at the dinner table. He hadn’t even changed out of his work clothes, his tie loose around his neck. The table was bare but for two candlesticks in the center. Eddie turned his head as Marcela entered from the kitchen and set down a plate in front of him. She was wearing a yellow dress, his favorite, with her hair tied up into a bun.
“We’re having meatloaf tonight,” Marcela said, smiling.
She placed a wine glass down for him.
“Thank you,” he said, sniffing the air. He looked at Marcela.
   “Do you smell something burning?”
Eddie Jimenez sat at the dinner table. His work shirt open, his tie loose around his neck, and his shoes kicked across the room. The table was bare as usual. Eddie turned his head as Marcela entered from the kitchen and set down a plate in front of him. She was wearing a yellow dress, his favorite, with her hair tied into a loose bun.
“We’re having meatloaf tonight,” Marcela said.
She set down a beer for him.
“Thank you,” he said, sniffing the air. He looked at Marcela.
   “Do you smell something burning?”
Eddie Jimenez sat at the table. His work shirt open, his tie loose around his neck, and his shoes kicked across the room. The table was bare as usual. Eddie watched as Marcela entered from the kitchen and set down a bare plate. He gazed at her. She was wearing a yellow dress with her hair tied into a loose bun and dressed as she should be.
   “Meatloaf tonight,” she said, frowning.
She set down a beer for him.
“I asked for steak,” he said, sniffing the air. He looked at Marcela and grabbed her by the wrist.
   “Do you smell something burning?”
Eddie Jimenez sat at the table. His shirt open and stained, his tie loose, and his shoes kicked across the room. The table was bare as usual. Eddie stared as Marcela entered from the kitchen and set down a bare plate. He stared at her yellow dress and her hair, tied into a loose bun, making sure she was dressed appropriately.
   “Meatloaf tonight,” she said, frowning.
She set down the seventh beer.
“I asked for steak,” he slurred. Eddie looked at Marcela and grabbed her by the wrist.
“Why are you missing a button?” he asked, looking at her yellow dress and its missing button. “Why is your hair so loose?”
Marcela trembled. “What are you talking about?” Her eyes were teary.
   Eddie’s nostrils flared.
   “Is something burning?”
Eddie Jimenez sat at the table. He hadn’t even changed out of his work clothes. His shirt was open and stained, his tie loose, and his shoes kicked across the room. The table was bare as usual. Eddie stared as Marcela entered from the kitchen and set down a bare plate. He stared at her yellow dress and her hair, tied into a loose bun, making sure she was dressed appropriately.
   “Meatloaf tonight,” she said, frowning.
She set down the seventh beer tonight.
“I asked for steak,” he slurred. Eddie looked at Marcela then pulled her by the wrist.
“Why are you missing a button?” he asked, pulling her harder and squinting at her hair.
   “What’s that on your neck?”
Marcela trembled and pulled back. “What in the hell are you talking about?” Her eyes were black.
“Show me your neck,” he yelled.
“Stop it, Eddie, you’re scaring me.”
Eddie stood up and threw her against the wall, grabbed his beer slammed it on the ground.
   “You’re being irrational,” Marcela said.
“You belong to me and no one else. I’ll burn this whole damn house down if I have to.”
Eddie’s nostrils flared and Marcela watched him.
“Eddie, there’s something burning,” she said.
Eddie Jimenez sat at the table, still in his work clothes. His shirt was open and stained, his tie loose, and his shoes kicked across the room. Eddie stared as Marcela entered from the kitchen and set down a bare plate. He stared at her singed yellow dress and her hair, tied into a loose bun, making sure she was dressed appropriately.
“Meatloaf tonight,” she said, lips charred around the edges.
She set down the seventh beer that night.
“I asked for steak,” he slurred. Eddie looked at Marcela then pulled her by her cold wrist.
“Why are you missing a button?” he asked, pulling her harder and squinting at her hair.
“What’s that on your neck?” It looked scarred.
Marcela trembled and pulled back. “What in the hell are you talking about?” Her eyes were completely black.
“Show me your neck,” he yelled.
“Stop it, Eddie, not this again.”
Eddie stood up and threw her against the wall, grabbed his beer slammed it on the ground.
“You’re being irrational,” Marcela said, expressionless. Her tongue and lips were black.
“You belong to me and no one else. I’ll burn this whole damn house down if I have to.”
Eddie began to wreck the house. He threw the charred table, knocked over the smoke damaged chairs and ripped the curtains to see nothing but void outside the window. He turned to Marcela, still standing there, smoke wisping off of her shoulders.
   “Eddie,” she said. “I’m burning.”

Happy Holidays from VPA!
Fall 2019 was a productive and exciting semester for the Visual and Public Art Department. Student activities included our continued partnership with Asian Cultural Experience through a series of art interventions specific to the historic preservation and revitalization of Salinas Chinatown.  Our annual Visiting Artist Scholar Series continued with visits from Marcela Pardo Ariza, Mildred Howard, and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Collaborative events included the 23rdAnnual Day of the Dead Celebration with various Associated Student organizations and VPA's Sugar Skull Workshop with CSUMB's College Support Programs. New projects included the unveiling of Skylight: Transmission of Knowledge/ Windows to Justice, the new mural commission by VPA Faculty Emerita Johanna Poethig for the new CAHSS building in conjunction with VPA's Faculty Mentorship Program as part of VPA’s Side by Side Initiative.  In line with faculty mentorship and creative scholarship, students presented their research during VPA's Annual Media Culture Symposium, and we are pleased to announce that the 2019 Monterey Regional Waste Management District (MRWMD) Artist-in-Residence fellowships have been awarded to VPA students Kelsey Ferry, Adam Gota, and Anthony Jimenez--congratulations to all!
Celebration is also in order for the groundbreaking and renovation of building 70! This is a much needed addition to VPA's facilities, which will include an exhibition space, a classroom, offices, screen-printing studio, photography production space, and two new darkrooms (screen-printing and photo).  This semester, we also celebrated the opening of VPA's Art Gallery in the new CAHSS building with our 19/20 AY jubilee programming. Our first exhibition, Quintessence, was in memory of VPA alumna Roxana Keland (class of 1995), and we look forward to sharing more jubilee programming next semester.
Lastly, I would like to acknowledge faculty projects and professional application that included art exhibitions such as White Wilderness/Maleza Blanca at the Triton Museum of Art, African Americans in Berkeley: Four Families at the Berkeley Historical Society, and FIVE X FIVE at the Southwest School of Art. In addition, notable faculty recognitions included two Creative Work Fund Awards in the Visual Arts for projects at Montalvo Arts Center and Salinas Chinatown.
We look forward to the spring semester. See you in 2020!
Angelica Muro, VPA Chair & Associate Professor of Photography & Integrated Media

TAP-1
Group Show
July 8th to 10th (2017)
TAP-1 was a project accomplished in July of 2017. It was organized by Marx Ruiz-Wilson with great help from Audrey Anne-Morin, Jonathan Jimenez, David Jaime Ruiz, Victor Garibay, Marcela Borquez, Morgane Clémént-Gagnon and all the artists listed below. The project was held in the basement of an apartments complex which is located in the limits between Milton-Parc and the Plateau area in Montreal, Canada.
The acronym title of the show “TAP” makes reference to a theory in evolutionary biology called The Adjacent Possible. In this theory the main argument is that by recombining existent data, materials, variables, etc. the limits of a given system expand and this phenomena repeats again and again giving access to new possibilities.
I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone involved in this project for their trust, hard work and time spent in making it a reality.
Marx Ruiz-Wilson, 2018
