Comics Read 9/30-10/16/2020
I took this past week as the opportunity to catch up on things I have in single issues. (Minus the Lazarus Sourcebooks, I just don’t know when I will finish those). These included the final two issues of both The Books of Magic and The House of Whispers. I had to reactivate my Comixology account for The House of Whispers issue. I hadn’t used that in years and was pretty frustrated last time I did. One of the things that was frustrating about it then was the fact that I thought I had bought certain items, but then couldn’t find them. I was pleasantly surprised when I re-loged into my account I found them quite easily. Which is great, except how it makes my to-read list larger.
The House of Whispers deserves to be reread, in anticipation of the final issues. At least the final arch of it. But I didn’t so the there was some unrefreshed plot points in my mind as well as the re-acquaintance with the “Guided View” of Comixology, which is when the app focuses the reader into the panel or part of a panel, directing the reader’s eyes through the page. I have to say, this was not a great selection for the “Guided View.” A lot of the story took place on boats in the river and there are several pages where the be a great vista of the boats at seas with some panels inserted describing individuals interacting.
Tumblr media
These pages are meant to be seen in full and then focus on the detail. Starting last the insert details is breaking up the flow, so I don’t recommend it. The series has a happy, if abrupt, ending, and I would like to revisit it someday a with more context, both in the DC characters and folk lore ones. I only recently realized that Papa Midnite is a DC character not a folklore one recently! (Sorry, I never have read any of the original Hellblazer run).
I’m slightly more familiar with the wider DC universe characters who appeared in the final issues of The Books of Magic. As I mentioned when I last wrote about this title, I am delighted to see the Dead Boy Detectives, and I don’t even mind the the plot that brings them here doesn’t make much senes or treat them as intelligent beings.
Tumblr media
The twists involving the true basis of the Blue Flame was fun and dark. The final issue left all that heavy potential feeling a little lighter. While reading it I thought more about how to discuss the art, I decided that in some panels, character head to body size is exaggerated, but that this exaggeration is more or less in line with how my camera phone treats people.
Finally, I read all five issues of Ash & Thorn. I decided to read this because I like following the writer Mariah McCourt, on Twitter. And I decided to read this in single issues because it seemed like a long shot in becoming successful. But apparently it sold well for something by Ahoy Comics! I have never read anything by this publisher before, so I was unprepared for the prose sections by different writers in the back of each issue. At first I thought that they were supposed to be in the same universe as the main text, but I eventually gave that up. Most of them were pretty unmemorable. My favorite was done in the form of a questionnaire. I am giving this back matter such prominence because I was pretty irritated by it, even though I mostly liked the main comic. I think I would like something that genuinely expanded on its universe. The comic tells the story of a woman named Lottie Thorn, whom everyone is surprised to realize is the chosen one to fight back the apocalyptic forces from another world, despite the fact that she’s past retirement age when the story starts. It’s fun, pairing energetic action with some mostly understandable anxiety about this unusual situation. The character designs, by artist Soo Lee  a fortunately distinct, and the art is clear with an interesting mix of being based on line work and some volume building through coloring.

Ash & Thorn #2 by Mariah McCourt, Soo Lee and Pippa Bowland arrive sin comic shops today. McCourt spoke with Alex Dueben about the series a couple weeks ago, where she said she wanted to play around with the idea of “The Chosen One” trope by having said “Chosen One” be someone unexpected:
So, I’ve always been a big reader and movie person and the “chosen one” trope is common across so many genres. I particularly love it in horror stories, so I’ve always been fascinated with how it’s explored by different storytellers. Then I watched Buffy and became obsessed with subversion of that trope – and so many others. Ash & Thorn came out of my deep love of older female characters like Miss Marple, Granny Weatherwax, and the fact that I grew up with my grandmothers and a lot of influential older women in my life. It just seemed like a good way to subvert the “chosen one,” with an older protagonist, and explore aging and invisibility.
See what else is arriving in comic shops this week.

Ash & Thorn #01
Tumblr media
Ash & Thorn #01 Ahoy Comics 2020 Written by Mariah McCourt Illustrated by Soo Lee Coloured by Pippa Bowland Lettered by Rob Steen    The apocalypse is nigh! The world needs a Champion, and the only heir to a sacred mystical lineage is...a little old lady? Meet Lottie Thorn, reluctant savior of the world, and her also-elderly trainer Lady Peruvia Ashlington-Voss. They might not look it, but these women are prepared to take on any Big Bad that comes along. But first, perhaps a nice cup of tea? Every AHOY comic also features extra prose stories and illustrations.    Well this Buffy meets the Golden Girls and I will say I have never been more impressed with how that combination actually works.  Actually I am really impressed with the whole book itself as I find it humorous, intelligent, engaging and just a pure delight to experience.  Mariah has found a way to take an honest approach to the characters and that in itself is refreshing so to add into that, this whole surreal new reality that is Lottie’s life and you’ve got the makings of something incredible.      I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  With the opening of the book we get to see some interesting action happening and it does more than I have come to expect out of one.  It definitely generates interest and draws the reader in beautifully so that we want to know more but also it does a lot to establish the character development as well.  Seeing the interaction between the two women is not just delightful but it’s natural, normal and it sounds real.  If you are having trouble with how I use the term “real” let me know I ill see if I can elaborate.  The character development is amazing and not unjust for these two but for every character we meet.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story and its twists and turns along the way the experience is just so enjoyable.  We see how all of this works together to create the books ebb & flow and highlight how well this is structured.    In another book I said that for me Soo’s work wasn’t suited for that particular story.  Here we see the talent that she has on full display and I cannot get enough of it!  The opening in particular with the mountain region and the river surrounded by trees and the green is so gorgeous to look at.  The linework that we see is spectacular and how we see the varying weights and different techniques being utilised to create the attention to detail is marvellous.  We see backgrounds a lot more than I was expecting so let’s keep that trend going because it could still benefit from more.  Still what we see and how it works within the composition within the panels bring us some nice depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a solid eye for storytelling.  The colour work is fantastic as well.  I do like the colour choices we see and how the various hues and tones within the colours are utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is well rendered.     Ahoy is one of those companies that really knows what they are doing.  Smart choices in the books they put out and instead of trying to food the market they have a smart, intelligent way of putting out the books they have.  This one easily fits into what I have seen from the me thus far and if this continues on the way it’s started then we’re in for one of the more uniquely interesting reads.

Continuing with our wide-ranging survey of creators from every end of the business on what happened and what’s coming. The project is still untitled but it presents an autofiction story about the journey of learning to love myself, and learning to accept my body and sexuality, as a freshly adult immigrant in New York city .
The story communicates through mix-media drawings on location, memoir comics, sketchbook pages, illustrated poetry, and even a few instances of fold-out paper architecture.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? I am really looking forward to going back home to Mumbai after a year, and eating a Nescafe flavoured ice cream sandwich in the winter heat with my best friend, while sitting on the wall that keeps the Arabian sea out of the city.

Christopher Butcher, TCAF Artistic Director & VIZ Media Editorial Consultant
2019 Projects: TCAF 2019 is gearing up and it’s going to have one of the strongest and most diverse guest lists in our history. It’s going to be a pretty amazing year to be there, whether you love kids comics, YA comics, Adult comics, North American or International Comics. We’re pretty hyped!
On the VIZ side of things, though there’s a ton still to be announced, several of the series I’ve had a hand in are starting or continuing into 2019. Look out for the YA LGBTQ series “That Blue Sky Feeling” to get its 2nd and 3rd and final volume next year, the amazing/disturbing BEASTARS will start next year (like if Zootopia were a little more food-chain accurate?), and the recently-debuted gorgeous SF title Ran and The Grey World will start to turn some heads.
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? That’s tough. The industry is so fragmented at this point, that stories that were huge in one area barely made a ripple in others. Straddling graphic novel publishing, manga publishing, and with a toe still in superhero publishing, it’s amazing the times people would pull me aside and ask “So what was that about, exactly? All I saw was the hashtag…”
So… yeah I dunno. I think the biggest ‘story’ probably wasn’t written, but it was about the continued evolution of this industry as it happened. The house-cleaning and secret-revealing that needed to happen, some of the editorial attitudes around projects looking pretty terrible when exposed to the light of day, the continued vertical integration in licensed properties, all of it points to a maturing industry, which is both good and bad. More professionalism, but less room for the sort of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants stuff that made comics very, very exciting about 10 years ago.
I think most folks involved will take ‘professionalism’ any day of the week though!
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? Pogs, baby! POGS!
No but seriously, I have no idea. There’s so much up in the air right now, 2019 is going to be bumpy for sure.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? If it’s not hurting anyone, then there’s no point in feeling guilty about pleasure. Enjoy yourselves, it’s tough out there. 🙂
Who inspired you in 2018? My husband, Andrew Woodrow-Butcher, who was enormously patient and supportive while I took risks and traveled around the world, all while working 60 hours a week making sure Canadian schools and libraries have the best comic collections in the world, re-opening the world’s first kids comic book store (Little Island Comics!), sending Canadians to comic festivals around the world, and of course, programming a big part of TCAF. He’s a constant inspiration to me, I’m lucky to have him.
Ben Towle, Cartoonist
2019 Projects: The main project I’ve been working on in 2018 is a non-fiction graphic novel for the new imprint Dead Reckoning, which specializes in comics about things historical and/or military-related.
The book’s called Four Fisted Tales and it’s a collection of real-life stories about animals used in combat.
Here’s a sample page:
And here’s an in-progress rough:
I’m also continuing to work on–albeit a lot more slowly–my book In the Weeds about cooking and playing rock music in the 1990’s. It’s my first foray into the great comics tradition of “funny animals” characters. Here’s an in-progress rough from that:
It probably seems like I’ve disappeared since Oyster War came out a few years back, but I’ve been hard at work on TWO books, I promise!
What was the biggest story in comics in 2018? That’s gotta be the announcement of not one, but TWO, forthcoming books from Raina Telgemeier. When the most highly-read and most popular cartoonist in North America announces a book, it’s a big flippin’ deal. TWO books in the same year is bonkers news.
What will be the biggest story in comics in 2019? OK…Well, it’s only a big story for ME, but I’m really excited about the upcoming D&Q Little Lulu reprint series. These are some of the best comics ever made and it’s going to be great to see them get the D&Q treatment starting in 2019.
What guilty pleasure (of any kind) are you looking forward to in 2019? I’m a huge Star Trek nerd and so I’m super-excited about whatever’s brewing with this new Picard show. Supposedly starting in 2019!
The Beat's Annual Creator Survey Part 4: with art from new projects by Amy Chu, Janet Lee, Roman Muradov, Otto Soglow, Ben Towle and more Continuing with our wide-ranging survey of creators from every end of the business on what happened and what's coming.

Hard Rock Graphic Novel Art Project SEPTEMBER MOURNING has released the official music video for their newest single, “Glass Animals.”
”’Glass Animals’ is about the fragmented soul. It’s about the realization that we are all broken. Something or someone has broken us and within that broken state we ultimately find the strength to survive. Musically, it’s a little bit of a tribute to one of our favorite bands: The Deftones. The song ties into the comic book as well…. Hannah is a broken soul who, through the help of September and Claire, finds the strength to face her personal demons and live again.” – Emily Lazar (Founder)
Shortly after Glass Animals drops, Image Comics is releasing September Mourning The Complete Collection co-created by Lazar and Marc Silvestri, co-written by Mariah McCourt and David Hine, illustrated by Sumeyye Kesgin and Tina Valentino and published by Top Cow. “In a world where Reapers prey on the souls of the living, imprisoning them in the shadow-land of Mortem, there is one last hope for humanity…. September Mourning” describes Lazar. The graphic novel will be sold in comic stores, books stores (Barnes & Noble) nationwide and on Amazon.
Stream Download “Glass Animals” Online: iTunes | Amazon | Spotify | Google Play
To support the release of the graphic novel and new music, September Mourning will be hitting the road, supporting Smile Empty Soul. Before and after the dates, the band will also be doing a handful of headline shows that will be announced soon. Doing this tour the band will also be stopping by local comic retailers for special meet and greets and acoustic performances.
Tour Dates: 03/01 @ Dirty Days Car Show – Atkins, AR 03/02 @ Rockhouse Live – Memphis, TN 03/05 @ Voltage Lounge – Philadelphia, PA 03/06 @ Stage West – Scranton, PA 03/07 @ Dingbatz – Clifton, NJ 03/08 @ Webster Underground – Hartford, CT 03/09 @ Wally’s – Hampton Beach, NH 03/10 @ Providence Tattoo and Music Festival – Providence, RI 03/12 @ House of Music – Portland, ME 03/13 @ The Chance – Poughkeepsie, NY 03/14 @ Revolution – Amityville, NY 03/15 @ Fish Head Cantina – Baltimore, MD 03/16 @ HMAC – Harrisburg, PA 03/19 @ Frankie’s – Toledo, OH 03/20 @ Cheers – South Bend, IN 3/20 South Bend, IN – Cheers 03/21 @ Token Lounge – Westland, MI 03/22 @ Muddy Creek Saloon – Heath, OH 03/23 @ Music Factory – Battle Creek, MI 03/24 @ Route 20 – Racine, WI 03/27 @ Gabe’s – Iowa City, IA 03/28 @ Rose Music Hall – Columbia, MO 03/29 @ Riot Room – Kansas City, MO 03/30 @ OKC Limits – Oklahoma City, OK

“September Mourning’s debut album (Volume II) and comic books (A Murder of Reapers/ The Hand of Fate) tells an epic tale of “heartbreak, loss, pain, joy, love, redemption, but most of all, courage…” while the comic books chronicle the first chapter of her story.” Produced by Sahaj Ticotin and Howard Benson, September Mourning revives the concept of rock star meets superhero. If Marilyn Manson and X-Men’s Storm had a kid, it would be September Mourning, who also cites influences as varied as Motionless In White, Disturbed, and Muse.
“For me, the project is a story, a theatrical art piece,” September explains. “Music is the backbone, but for this to work, it has to include the imagery and the narrative all symbiotically linked into the whole. Music taps into your innermost being. There’s something very intimate and personal about it.”
The character of September Mourning is a human-reaper hybrid, who feels the need to give some human souls a second chance, and thus toys with Fate. To expound on this narrative, September is working with iconic comic book artist Marc Silvestri, who started out on the original X-Men comics and went on to form Top Cow Productions (Witchblade, The Darkness). Together, they are putting together the story of September Mourning in graphic form, to accompany, and enhance the musical message.
Having performed at large festivals like Rock on the Range and Download Festival and shared the stage with acts like Marilyn Manson and Avatar, September Mourning has already built up an impressive fan base, which she calls her “Children of Fate,” constantly encouraging them to have “the courage to embrace their passion… to allow yourself to follow your heart and not be a slave to your fears. To know that the only boundaries that exist in our lives are the ones we allow.””
The next chapter of September Mourning’s journey begins with their debut single “Empire”which will accompany the 3rd comic book in the series, “Trinity”

Review: September Mourning Vol. 1
Review: September Mourning Vol. 1
Death and the traditional ideas of souls has been used to tell stories in so many different comics, it might becoming its own little niche subset. Riven is a reaper, who for some reason decided that there was something special about a girl and in a moment of weakness, took her soul and replaced it with his.  This cost him his freedom and set the girl on a course to give second chances to those…

Ash & Thorn
Ash & Thorn by Mariah McCourt is a 5 issue mini series being released by Ahoy Comics that has been described as Buffy meets The Golden Girls. While I think that is a pretty cool description, I think I’d go with Supernatural meets Calendar Girls. (Yes I am aware that’s a weird reference)
Ash & Thornis a comic the world should have been gagging for. It’s all about strong women saving the world.…
