actually kind of insane that ppl seem to hate marial so much for the crimes of 1) being rightfully angry about her best friend lying to her about a plot to kill her father figure, and for 2) desperately looking for a way out of her life of forced servitude where she lives in squalor and is beaten and abused at whim by people who specifically want to target her

i swear i'm not saying this to be a contrarian or blindly committed to adore "evil women" but i don't think marial is as bad as people say she is.

she is between two worlds: serfdom and aristocracy. her actions are informed by the conflict in her morals and desires. having experienced the degradation of being a servant at court she has a better understanding of the cruel nature of the noble class and it was what made her realize that she had no true friends there.

yet she was born into nobility, and as such is accustomed to a certain lifestyle; to lose that lifestyle would be difficult for anyone, so if she was so close to having it back i can understand her panicking and playing the game of court politics by telling peter of the coup and hoping it works out for her. catherine was second on her priority, which she won't admit to herself but is very obvious to everyone else.

it doesn't surprise me that she kept the secret of catherine's mother murder because she doesn't like her. again, her principles aren't concrete but she's not worse than archie or orlo or even elizabeth. she's thinking of her convenience rather than how catherine would feel. but i also think the reason why she snaps and tells catherine about it is also because her father was stripped of his title because he... fucked peter's mother's corpse. he was punished for it and so was she merely because she's his nearest relation. for him to not suffer any consequences after all that he did, she felt the severity of its unfairness and it became less about wanting catherine to know and more about trying to get even once and for all. but this act is what made catherine realize that marial's loyalty is to herself first and catherine second. their friendship is second to marial's comfort, and so catherine gave her that: the comfort of living in the palace and remaining at court, without their friendship.

as a political move it's better for catherine not to keep her at such close proximity because marial's own gripes and grievances bleed so much into her opinions; she is not an objective person and cannot see the perspectives of others. the price of that move, however, cost catherine the very first friend she had, and it's clear from ep1 of s3 that she didn't enjoy setting that boundary between them, but it was a sacrifice that had to be done.

and yes, i do think that part of the hate towards her is because of the peter x catherine shippers. he's done far worse things than she has, he's just lucky to be portrayed by nicholas hoult. i'd be mad too if there were two chances to kill the idiot tyrannical emperor, whatever the consequences may be, and it just didn't happen and he continues to wander around the palace like he's on vacation.

her main fault is that she wants to have her cake and eat it too. she wants peter to be dethroned and dead but mostly for her own benefit. she supports catherine but doesn't consider that what catherine wants to do for russia will inevitably strip her of some luxuries. she supports the coup and reign of catherine so long as she isn't affected by it.

i'm still on ep2 of s3 (rip orlo, that was a very sudden and undignified death... i still haven't processed it) so i wonder how her arc will be handled here. i was a little disappointed by s2 on the whole so i'm not sure what to expect.

What the characters of The Great would dress up as for Halloween

I thought this would be fun to do. Happy Halloween!

Peter: Mojo Dojo Casa House Ken

I just know Peter would dress up as Ken! He picked Mojo Dojo Casa House Ken because he wants to look cool and not wear a shirt.

Catherine: Barbie or clever pun costume

I could see Catherine doing one of two things; either she dresses up as Barbie because she's coordinating with Peter (and she probably likes the movie since it's feminist) or she's doing a pun costume that she came up with herself and thinks is really clever.

Grigor and George: Bonnie and Clyde

Couple's costume but well executed. George probably started putting together the costume months in advance. They've got super cool gunshot makeup and Grigor is stoked that he gets to carry a prop gun (that he'll probably pretend to shoot Peter, Arkady, and Velementov with). They win best costume.

Tatyana: Sexy badger

She's totally the kind of girl to wear lingerie and animal ears Mean Girls style. We saw her put ink on her nose to look like a badger in the printing press episode, so I think she would be a sexy badger.

Arkady: Han Solo

I definitely think Arkady would dress up as someone cool and suave like Han Solo (he would also pretend to shoot the guys with his blaster). He wanted to be Ken, but then he found out Peter was dressing up as Ken and he had to switch.

Orlo: Some obscure philosopher

He would spend the whole evening trying to explain his costume and get progressively more frustrated that nobody knows who he is.

Archie: Nothing

Of course Archie thinks that Halloween is the devil's holiday, but he still shows up at the party to stare at everyone in sexy costumes. People keep telling him "nice costume" even though he's wearing his normal clothes.

Elizabeth: Floor show Frank-N-Furter

Elizabeth definitely goes to midnight screenings of Rocky Horror every year. She's dressing up as floor show Frank because (like real life Elizabeth) she wants to show off her legs.

Agnes and Hugo: Misunderstood couple's costume

Agnes would be like "we should do Grease". Hugo would be like "got it" and show up in a toga.

Velementov: One of those pairs of glasses with a nose and moustache

Velementov is doing the lowest effort costume possible. He literally just came to the party to get drunk.

Marial: Sexy angel

Marial is probably wearing a super basic costume. Archie yells at her because he thinks her costume is blasphemous.

Sorry but Marial and Grigor have 0 chemistry. Grigor is more fun when he's pining pathetically after George and Peter, both of whom are ignoring him, usually in favor of each-other.

i'll never understand who defends grigor to get back to georgina, like... you know he suffered the entire season one just because of her (and peter), right?

marial was the best thing that could have happened to him in season two, she made him feel good and happy at last!

We got the Marial cut.

So recently I got to see the deleted scenes from season 3. This made it clear that it is not just the writers who seem to hate George, but the editors as well. Multiple scenes that make her look more sympathetic were left on the cutting room floor.

Exhibit A: a scene that confirms my interpretation of why George told Katya to do the play. For those who have not seen this scene, it takes place in S3E7 during Catherine's 'fun day'. Catherine and George are playing a game with the court to 'get to the truth of their lives' where someone gets up on the podium and tells a story and if the people believe it they throw roses, and if they do not they throw turnips. Catherine goes first and George tells her to tell a 'secret she holds in her heart', obviously trying to get her to tell everyone about Peter. Instead, Catherine tells the court a story about stealing her sister's pony. You can see George is upset that Catherine did not tell the truth after she told the court she would never lie to them. This is why George tells Katya to put on the play, Catherine is lying to everyone about Peter's death, making Grigor lie as well, and George would not have found out about one of her best friends being dead if Grigor had not told her.

Exhibit B: a scene that shows how truly devastated George is about Peter. This scene was supposed to take place directly after the tennis scene in Fun. George breaks down in tears in the hall, and then pulls herself together. We very rarely see George cry in the show. I'm pretty sure (need to rewatch to confirm) that this scene and when she talks to Catherine about Peter are the only times we've seen her cry. Ever. She is a survivor and even though she is deeply grieving, she has to pull herself together and keep going like she always does.

Exhibit C: a scene that shows that Grigor still seeks comfort with George. Not sure where exactly in the episode this was supposed to go, but it's from S3E8 Peter and the Wolf. Probably after Grigor discovers Marial at the party celebrating Peter's death. Grigor lays down in bed next to George who is sleeping. And he just stares at her, tears in his eyes.

George is not a bad person. She is deeply grieving just like Catherine and Grigor. All three of them just are dealing with it in different ways. Catherine in her delusion, Grigor turning nihilistic, and George hiding her feelings and taking it out on Catherine who she thinks is keeping a horrible secret. Grigor still loves her but struggles to see what their relationship could be without Peter. It is mind boggling to me that Grigor would propose to Marial after all she did and how disrespectful she was. It just didn't make any sense, much like George trying to marry Paul.

I will post later about my idea for a better storyline for the Dymovs after Peter's death. The one we got was just plain bad, trying and failing to make Marial look better.

It’s so worth your time Please give it a chance
