I know you haven't posted about hockey in a while but I remembered your hockey wives posts and was wondering if you ever watched any more of it. Also Brandon Prust and Maripier did get married and I would love to know if you had any thoughts about that either You can definitely tell me to f off, it's just the decade's ending and I'm nostalgic. Also wanted to thank you for making my college life so much fun. Hope you're doing well
Aww, Anon, I’m so glad I could help make your college years enjoyable! Thank you for including me in your nostalgia. I hope your next decade is filled with lots of fun. ♥
Today is the day for hockey feelings - I also posted a hockey snippet thing on Dreamwidth for all of us having Carts and Richie feelings today.
I didn’t watch more of Hockey Wives beyond that first season. The way no one on that show actually communicated with their partner in a kind, respectful, loving way was the beginning of the end of my interest in hockey. However, it did really remind me how much I love doing feminist pop culture commentary, and I’ve tried to do some more of that off and on since then, mostly on Twitter and Dreamwidth.
I knew Prusty and Maripier were engaged, but I can’t remember if I knew for sure they got married. So much of what MP said on the show reminded me of a Captain Awkward letter. I genuinely hope that someday she finds some way to learn what makes for a healthy relationship and a healthy self-image. What I did know is that she was in a heist movie, and one review called her “the most appealing presence in the film.”

The Fall of the American Empire (2018)
Tumblr media
Full disclosure: I haven’t seen Denys Arcand’s The Decline of the American Empire nor The Barbarian Invasions. I’ve determined these are either must-sees to appreciate the Canadian writer/director’s latest film, The Fall of the American Empire… or that this movie just isn’t particularly good.
A robbery goes wrong and delivery man Pierre-Paul Daoust (Alexandre Landry) decides to take the money left behind by the dead shooters. When Pierre-Paul learns it belongs to some powerful and very dangerous people, he enlists the help of recently released money launderer Sylvain ‘The Brain’ Bigras (Rémy Girard) for help. With so many people looking for the money, it’s crucial every move is made with absolute perfection but when he begins falling for high-priced escort Aspasie (Maripier Morin), he begins making big mistakes.
The setup is great. Anyone who’s ever seen a crime thriller has wondered what they'd do if they stumbled upon a big bag of bills. Countless fictional heroes have taught us that drawing attention to yourself and your new fortune will inevitably result in deep trouble or death. What you want to do is squirrel that gold away and keep quiet… but then what?
You see what the idea was but it isn't handled optimally. The film tells us Pierre-Paul is an intellectual who knows more than everyone else around him. I’m not sure if Denys Arcand is trying to be satirical by having his protagonist fall in love with a callgirl - probably the stupidest thing anyone could ever do. Is he supposed to be one of these guys who thinks he’s smart but is actually dumb? Or maybe he’s so book smart he’s rolled all the way around again and become stupid? When you think you know, here comes the final act, which takes the story in a deeply cynical, kinda angry direction and unravels all of your previous theories.
This movie doesn’t know what it wants to say. At times, it’s gritty and realistic. Then suddenly, it’s this overwrought, phony and overwritten romance between Pierre-Paul and Aspasie. The movie wants to be light and breezy by ensuring no one gets hurt as the trio find a way to keep the money… but also has people getting tortured and murdered. Everyone, including the criminals and the police, gets their own little stories. The actors are all pretty good in their roles and there are a number of surprises throughout, along with a few moments of clever wit but for the most part, you don’t really care.
While I didn’t take to The Fall of the American Empire, I can see the audience that would. Even so, I think you’ll find the tone uneven (though that may be what draws you to it). I’ll place this one in the middle and recommend it as a rental. (Original French theatrical version on the big screen, June 4, 2019)

Maripier Morin car accident rumour: Is the news true?
Maripier Morin car accident rumour: Is the news true?
Maripier Morin, an entertainer and television host from Quebec, has been the focus of much speculation and rumour over the past several months. She first appeared on television in 2006 on the reality show Occupation Double. She then kicked off the show and went on to make appearances on Deal or No Deal and Le Banquier. Maripier has a real sense of humour, and she is known as the ‘lady about…

The olé olé years of Maripier Morin
When he was younger, Maripier Morin chained alcoholic comas, ” blackout on blackout on blackout until the day she snorted her first line of cocaine. Posted at 1:54 am Updated at 7:15 a.m. “Bingo, tabarnak, I’ve got it,” she said to herself. The 36-year-old host, who was “a drinking disaster”, in her own words, thought she had solved her problems by replacing the booze with Colombian white…

The Fall of the American Empire

The Fall of the American Empire    [trailer]
A shy and insecure delivery truck driver accidentally arrives on the scene of a major crime and picks up two bags of cash and hides them.
Great story, with lots of interconnected story strands.
There's also a lot social critique of state and financial institutions. While entirely correct and worth every imaginable outrage, it often comes across as being overly preachy and it slows down the pacing. The naivité and lack of charisma of the main protagonist is also a bit of a problem.
Due to my personal preferences, I would like to see a more breezy version, like for example one directed by Steven Soderbergh.
