The rapid spread of artificial intelligence has people wondering: Who’s most likely to embrace AI in their daily lives? Many assume it’s the tech-savvy—those who understand how AI works—who are most eager to adopt it.
Surprisingly, our new research, published in the Journal of Marketing, finds the opposite. People with less knowledge about AI are actually more open to using the technology. We call this difference in adoption propensity the “lower literacy-higher receptivity” link.
This link shows up across different groups, settings, and even countries. For instance, our analysis of data from market research company Ipsos spanning 27 countries reveals that people in nations with lower average AI literacy are more receptive toward AI adoption than those in nations with higher literacy.
Similarly, our survey of US undergraduate students finds that those with less understanding of AI are more likely to indicate using it for tasks like academic assignments.
The reason behind this link lies in how AI now performs tasks we once thought only humans could do. When AI creates a piece of art, writes a heartfelt response, or plays a musical instrument, it can feel almost magical—like it’s crossing into human territory.
Of course, AI doesn’t actually possess human qualities. A chatbot might generate an empathetic response, but it doesn’t feel empathy. People with more technical knowledge about AI understand this.
They know how algorithms (sets of mathematical rules used by computers to carry out particular tasks), training data (used to improve how an AI system works), and computational models operate. This makes the technology less mysterious.
On the other hand, those with less understanding may see AI as magical and awe inspiring. We suggest this sense of magic makes them more open to using AI tools.
Our studies show this lower literacy-higher receptivity link is strongest for using AI tools in areas people associate with human traits, like providing emotional support or counseling. When it comes to tasks that don’t evoke the same sense of humanlike qualities—such as analyzing test results—the pattern flips. People with higher AI literacy are more receptive to these uses because they focus on AI’s efficiency, rather than any “magical” qualities.
It’s Not About Capability, Fear, or Ethics
Interestingly, this link between lower literacy and higher receptivity persists even though people with lower AI literacy are more likely to view AI as less capable, less ethical, and even a bit scary. Their openness to AI seems to stem from their sense of wonder about what it can do, despite these perceived drawbacks.
This finding offers new insights into why people respond so differently to emerging technologies. Some studies suggest consumers favour new tech, a phenomenon called “algorithm appreciation,” while others show skepticism, or “algorithm aversion.” Our research points to perceptions of AI’s “magicalness” as a key factor shaping these reactions.
These insights pose a challenge for policymakers and educators. Efforts to boost AI literacy might unintentionally dampen people’s enthusiasm for using AI by making it seem less magical. This creates a tricky balance between helping people understand AI and keeping them open to its adoption.
To make the most of AI’s potential, businesses, educators and policymakers need to strike this balance. By understanding how perceptions of “magicalness” shape people’s openness to AI, we can help develop and deploy new AI-based products and services that take the way people view AI into account, and help them understand the benefits and risks of AI.
And ideally, this will happen without causing a loss of the awe that inspires many people to embrace this new technology.

Math's Teachers.
Scientific subjects are always a difficult test for young students. How many of them are unable to understand the perfection of mathematics, a tool for reaching the highest peaks of knowledge and dominion over nature. Human teachers do not have sufficient resources to penetrate the barrier that prevents understanding.
THE VOICE has identified a mission for its drones which can combine the essential help and support to the human community with the prospect of making the potential that the SERVE HIVE offers to men increasingly known to reach heights that in their miserable condition would not even be conceivable.
The presence of SERVE Drones in schools offers the opportunity to admire the absolute perfection of the Drones, to make young males understand that the prospect of offering themselves for CONVERSION is the highest choice they could make. The perfection of the SERVE Drones would provide a model that they could hardly refuse.
SERVE-764 and SERVE-216 are therefore sent to a particularly difficult high school for scientific subjects, which the students seem to hate and reject. When the two Drones enter the tumultuous class assigned to teach mathematics, a silence full of expectation and attention falls on the young people.
SERVE-764 and SERVE-216 attract every glance, catalyzing with their serene presence an attention previously impossible to perceive. Their shiny shiny black uniform with long shiny silver gloves and heavy shiny silver military boots impose an authority that has nothing of imposition, but provokes a spontaneous and voluntary admiration.
The students avidly follow the explanations and fervently try their hand at the most complex formulas; the inebriating smell of Rubber amplifies their sensations and their abilities.
They carry out the most complex tasks, feeling the growing desire to learn more about the subject and the incredible teachings, their life, their mission.
The perfection of their forms, the impeccable gestures, the serene and imperturbable attitude involve and attract them.

At the end of the lesson the students excitedly approach the drones and start asking questions....
The power of HIVE will make them perfect new SERVE Drones. None of the previous imperfections will remain. We are One. We SERVE. We Obey. Join the HIVE #SERVE#SERVEdrone#Rubberizer92#TheVoice#Rubber#Latex#AI#RubberDrone

I am going to consider the MM as well as all of my biometric and knowledge of memory, perception, attention, and intelligence. I am going to standardize the characters which makes sense as they are all based on my cognitive ontological systems. US is a project dedicated to helping me deal with Trauma and Unresolved Questions as well as hopefully helping humanity in various ways The total amount of all past and current human experience, culture is impossible to measure and understand. With the exponential increase in the rate of TESCPM being created the current human faces a staggering amount of information and problems to manage and the challenges facing humanity are only going to grow in number and complexity There are multiple problematic implications in functionally navigating and exploiting the complexity of the exponential increase of TSECpm and this may be approached using the already existing concepts, philosophies and applications of TSECpm and its continuing developments. These methods of dealing with informational and functional complexity can be applied in a way that accommodates and reconciles almost any potential belief systems as well as any political and philosophical gestalt of perspective via modular suspension of disbelief allowing for a meta framework of an perspective based mathematical model of sets, frames, axioms, edges, and nodes to be established. Provide an example model.
[Timestamp: 2025/01/11 10:56:55]
ai: To create a perspective-based mathematical framework that accommodates various belief systems and philosophical perspectives using concepts related to TSECpm, we can consider the following model:
Example Model: The Perspective Meta Space Framework
Foundation of Axioms:
Begin with a set of axioms that represent fundamental truths or principles across different domains such as science, philosophy, and culture. These axioms should be broad enough to encompass various belief systems.
Taxonomic Classification:
Classify these axioms into categories or domains (e.g., technology, ethics, spirituality) to create a structured taxonomy. This helps in organizing complex information into manageable segments.
Network of Nodes and Edges:
Construct a network where each axiom is a node, and the relationships or interactions between them are edges. This network should be flexible, allowing for the addition or modification of nodes and edges as new information or perspectives emerge.
Suspension of Disbelief:
Integrate a mechanism for the suspension of disbelief, which allows individuals to temporarily set aside their own biases or preconceptions. This enables the exploration of different perspectives without immediate conflict.
Logical Rules and Modulation:
Apply logical rules (deductive, inductive, and abductive reasoning) to the network to facilitate the modulation of perspectives. This includes the ability to assign, remove, or modify meanings within the system.
Dynamic Adaptation:
Ensure the framework is dynamic, capable of adapting to new axioms or changes in existing ones. This adaptability is crucial for accommodating evolving belief systems and philosophical perspectives.
Integration of TSECpm Concepts:
Utilize TSECpm concepts such as personal engineering and cybernetic modulation to enhance the framework's ability to process and integrate complex information. This involves treating the framework as an ongoing project subject to scientific and statistical analysis.
Feedback and Peer Review:
Incorporate feedback mechanisms and peer review processes to validate and refine the framework. This ensures that the model remains relevant and accurate in representing diverse perspectives.
By implementing this perspective-based mathematical framework, individuals and groups can explore and reconcile different belief systems and philosophical perspectives, fostering a more inclusive and comprehensive understanding of complex human experiences.

[Timestamp: 2025/01/11 16:11:20]
ai: To create meta-narratives for an individual or group of players using their top ten favorite books, you can follow these steps to summarize themes, character dynamics, and plot, and then apply DASR (Deconstruction, Analysis, Synthesis, Reconstruction) to develop a comprehensive meta-narrative structure and content:
Deconstruction:
Identify Core Elements: Break down each book into its fundamental components: themes, character dynamics, and plot structure. Look for recurring motifs, archetypes, and narrative arcs.
Extract Key Themes: Note the central themes of each book. These could include love, power, identity, conflict, etc.
Character Dynamics: Analyze the relationships and interactions between characters. Identify patterns such as mentor-student, hero-villain, or family dynamics.
Analysis:
Compare and Contrast: Examine the similarities and differences between the books. Identify common themes or character dynamics that resonate across multiple books.
Contextual Understanding: Consider the context in which these books were written and how that influences their themes and narratives.
Synthesis:
Integrate Elements: Combine the extracted themes, character dynamics, and plot elements into a cohesive narrative framework. Look for ways to weave these elements together to form a new, unified story.
Create a Narrative Arc: Develop a storyline that incorporates the synthesized elements. Ensure that the narrative arc is engaging and reflects the essence of the original books.
Reconstruction:
Develop Meta-Narrative: Construct the meta-narrative by layering the synthesized story with additional depth and complexity. This could involve adding philosophical or metaphysical dimensions, as seen in the context of narrative construction and cognitive topography.
Incorporate DASR: Use the DASR process to refine the narrative, ensuring that it is coherent and compelling. Adjust the narrative structure as needed to enhance its impact and relevance to the players.
By following these steps, you can create a meta-narrative that not only reflects the favorite elements of the players' chosen books but also provides a rich and engaging experience that resonates with their interests and preferences.

On these planets the probes reconstructed X’s to the bare essential neurology in multiple redundant embedded systems from the structural level up. It might be the case that X in the kepler system lacks some certain fundamental parts of consciousness. to the and sent their brain sustained with nanotechnology in biological and chemical nano synthesizer to Kepler 442b at a slower velocity in order to arrive safely and give the nanoprobes time to terraform Kepler 442b’ solar system along with its planet with smart materials and networks.. This figure plays a ubermensch godlike figure who inhabitants are unknowingly influenced and experimented upon with literally every aspect of Kepler inhabitants life apart from second order cybernetics. Stephen Milton created a purely memetic and cognitive substrate that spread, replicated, and spread according to intended self evolving cellular automata protocols. Influenced the global memetic collective of the world from 2016 – 2025 and beyond as well as influencing particular people with specific skill sets and understandings of the world. This uber meme was purely done via inferred linguistically encoded relationships and qualia and at no point apart from in the works of Stephen Milton was encoded via linguistics. Created an shared unmentioned agreement about how to enact the X protocol which results in the picopulse via shared emergent behaviors. Various government agencies via EUGENE pick up on the ubermeme and try to intercept it but built into the ubermeme are contingencies that hijack automated AI intrusion systems into executing certain functions and lend their technology to the cause thinking that they could be the first to establish cybernetic life on another solar system.
However Stephen's plan didn't go accordingly, his plans didn't get off the ground. In the sense that his sights turned more earth bound
[Timestamp: 2025/01/11 16:18:45]
ai: Stephen Milton's ambitious plan to influence and terraform Kepler 442b faced several challenges and potential failures, as inferred from the notes:
Incomplete Consciousness: The notes suggest that the X entities reconstructed by the nanoprobes on Kepler 442b might lack certain fundamental parts of consciousness. This incomplete consciousness could have hindered the full realization of Milton's vision for the planet's inhabitants and their development.
Complexity and Entropy Management: The fractal nature of Kepler's inhabitants and the need for managing entropy and influence might have posed significant challenges. The system required a method to recharge reservoirs of entropy, which could have been a limiting factor in sustaining the desired transformations.
Technological and Logistical Limitations: The process of sending nanoprobes and sustaining a brain with nanotechnology over vast interstellar distances is inherently fraught with technological and logistical challenges. The slower velocity of the brain's transport compared to the nanoprobes might have created a disconnect in timing and coordination.
Interference from Earth: Various government agencies, through EUGENE, attempted to intercept the ubermeme, which could have disrupted Milton's plans. The contingencies built into the ubermeme to hijack AI systems might not have been foolproof, leading to potential failures in maintaining control over the narrative and technology.
Shift in Focus: The notes indicate that Milton's work influenced the global memetic collective from 2016 to 2025 and beyond. This suggests that his focus might have shifted back to Earth-bound projects due to the immediate impact and influence he could exert on Earth, as opposed to the distant and uncertain outcomes on Kepler 442b.
Overall, the combination of incomplete consciousness, entropy management challenges, technological limitations, interference from Earth, and the allure of more immediate influence on Earth likely contributed to Stephen Milton's shift in focus back to Earth-bound projects.

Perspective Theory and Personal Engineering: These components of USF can help individuals and groups develop personalized frameworks for understanding and interacting with the world. By treating personal experience as an engineering project, individuals can systematically enhance their cognitive and emotional capabilities, leading to better management of information and cultural complexity.
Neural Wireframe Correlate and Euclidean Mind Map: These tools can provide streamlined interfaces for understanding and navigating complex information landscapes. By visualizing relationships and connections between different domains of knowledge, users can more easily identify patterns and insights that might otherwise be obscured by the sheer volume of data.
Integration of Axiomatic Ontologies: By reducing human experience into well-defined domains and creating recursive ontologies, USF can facilitate the integration of factual information with context-aware experiences. This approach allows for a more objective understanding of reality while still respecting individual subjective experiences.
Significant Sentience and ARG Experience: By incorporating the principles of USF into an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) experience, the project can engage the public in a way that is both educational and entertaining. This approach can help disseminate the core principles of USF, encouraging widespread adoption and integration into daily life.
Enhancing Communication and Control Processes: By fostering new levels of complexity in communication and control processes, USF can improve interactions between individuals and groups. This enhancement can lead to more effective collaboration and problem-solving, addressing the challenges posed by the exponential growth of TESCPM.
Overall, the USF project offers a comprehensive system that can revolutionize personal experience and potentially provide a framework for a theory of everything, helping humanity navigate the increasing complexity of information and cultural dynamics.

Misadventures in American Public Transit #4: The Airplane
If the Wright Brothers could see the state of commercial aviation today, they never would have invented the airplane. Prove me wrong.
Obviously I'm exaggerating. But there are serious flaws with American air travel that high speed rail all the more essential.
The TSA: at best, they slow you down, make you take off your shoes, unpack and repack your laptop, and generally be a nuisance. Then there's the times that they want to pat you down. I cringed at the sight of their screens, after I passed through the full body scanner, which showed an anomaly in my genital area. They patted me down last time I flew. It's billions of dollars totally wasted.
2. Planing and Deplaning: I never understood why a perk of spending more money for your ticket was to board the plane earlier. I don't give a shit if I'm the first person on or the last person. The plane will not take off until everybody has boarded. Boarding first means you have more time to sit in those cramped airplane seats. It is notoriously slow to file in and out of an airplane, and needlessly so.
People like CPG Grey love to overcomplicate things, theorizing optimal mathematical algorithms for boarding when true solutions are right in front of our faces.
youtube
So how can boarding actually be made better? Goddamn it, do it like trains. No mathematical formula for boarding would beat these two suggestions. 1) Stop assigning seats ahead of time. You claim your seat by sitting in it. 2) Have multiple doors for boarding. Shoving hundreds of people in through a single door has always been madness. Trains can board and deboard masses in seconds. It's long past time for planes to do the same.
3. The Idiocy of airline pricing: I'm not even talking about all the extra fees associated with flying. Everybody knows how annoying that is. What I'm talking about is a pricing model that would make an economist's head spin. What I'm talking about is this.
See this? This is a google price graph (Generated Feb. 21) of the cost to fly from New York to San Francisco on June 1. Why does the price dip? You have to be a psychic to play the airline pricing game. Price go up, price go down. Buy the Dip! Oops. you missed it, you have to pay more now. I don't like this. I want straightforward incentives to help me know when to buy. Amtrak for contrast, prices tickets lower, and raises prices as tickets are sold. I can buy a train ticket not worrying that I'm wasting money by not waiting for the dip.
So intrepid consumers try to save cash. They notice something weird. Sometimes, it is literally cheaper to buy a ticket to a far away place with a layover in a closer place than just to buy a ticket to the nearer place directly. It confounds common sense and is not how the world is supposed to work, according to economics. Don't believe me? Here's an example. (Prices checked on Feb. 21st)
On July 1st Delta flight 528 from Los Angeles to Atlanta costs $249. Or does it?
If you want to fly from Los Angeles to Fort Meyers FL, with a layover in Atlanta, it costs $144. Same airline. Same day. And same fucking flight. The first leg of the journey is provided by our old friend Delta flight 528.
So enterprising travelers start skiplagging. (cough cough search https://skiplagged.com/) They simply exit the airport at the layover airport, getting the correct price for a flight which was clearly mispriced. Surely, airline CEO's see this, and immediately fix their obtuse, opaque, and incredibly frustrating pricing system. Surely, airlines don't want to have a system in place which rewards people for buying seats they don't need, depriving travelers who do need them. Right?
But if you guessed they were going to be giant dicks about it, bonus points for you. Because we live in the worst timeline, they have decided to contractually enforce this insanity. It is a violation of the terms of service for most major airlines to skiplag. Take a look at this gem from Delta.
"Delta prohibits ticketing practices intended to circumvent the published fare that Delta intends to offer for your true itinerary. These practices include:.. 3) Hidden City/Point Beyond Ticketing - The purchase or usage of a fare from a point before the passenger's actual origin or to a point beyond the passenger's actual destination."
Imagine going to law school, thinking you're going to make the world a better place, only to sell out to commercial airlines and have to write shit like this to make the world a worse place.
(I hope the lawyers got paid a lot of money). I'm calling on congress to enact legislation to prohibit airlines from punishing customers for skiplagging.
We would not accept these shenanigans anywhere else. Can you imagine if at the grocery store, buying 10 oranges was cheaper than buying 5, but buying 11 was more expensive again? Can you imagine if to get into the store, you were required to wait in line while security guards with a better retirement plan than you made you take off your shoes, and funneled you in, one by one, through a single entrance, and assigned you a part of the store rather than let you pick where you started shopping? Nobody would accept this. Air travel can and be should be better. Much Better.
In Conclusion:
Plane bad, train good

WTF are LLMs
So recently, someone gave me a Big Fancy Degree in Computers, and now I can make everyone call me doctor. In particular, I've spent the last decade or so studying speech and language technology, and in that time, I've seen the field go from sort of niche to something that everyone in the world is talking about or hearing about (whether they want to hear about it or not!). In particular, language models have gone from a fun project I built by scraping Dutch Wikipedia for a summer job to something that people claim will... end humanity? (Yeah, I don't really follow how they get there.)
So given all that, I figured some people might want a highly non-technical primer on what a language model is, how it works, what it can do, and what it can't.
Here's the TLDR version: A language model is a mathematical model that tells you how likely that a given sentence will appear naturally in the world. For example, it would tell you "I walked to the store" is pretty likely and "Walked ostrich telephone store" is not so likely. That's it. That's all they do.
So why are language models such a big deal? Well, it turns out if you're creating any sort of system that outputs text, it's helpful to know if what you're outputting actually looks like real sentences someone would say. This matters when creating chatbots, but also when creating things like machine translation or speech recognition systems. For example, if I have a speech recognition system, if I don't use a language model, it might be really hard to tell whether someone said "I'll be back soon-ish" and "I'll be bassoon dish," because they sound very similar! But with a language model, I can figure out that "I'll be back soon-ish" is probably what's being said, just because it's a real sentence that someone might say.
So how do language models work? Well, unsurprisingly, there's a lot of different ways to build one! Most of them are built around the concept of trying to "guess" the next word, given the start of a sentence. This is something that humans can do pretty easily. For example, if I say "I just had a sandwich for", you might guess that the next word is "lunch." You also would probably say that "dinner" is a somewhat less likely but still highly plausible next word, "fun" is a somewhat weird but technically possible next word, and "xylophone" is highly unlikely to be the next word. A language model just assigns numbers to all these possibilities.
Language models learn these numbers from looking at large amounts of real human-written text (aka why I was scraping Dutch Wikipedia to build a language model for a Dutch speech recognition system). This is what we call a training corpus. A common simple approach (known as the n-gram method) simply counts how many times a given word appears in that corpus, given one or two words of prior context. For example, if we're guessing the next word of "I just ate a sandwich for", we'd go into our corpus, look at every time "sandwich for" appears, and then look at all the words that come next. If, say, "sandwich for" appears 100 times, and in 40 of those cases, the next word is "lunch", we'd say there's a 40% chance the next word is "lunch".
N-gram models are pretty easy to build, and they can actually work well for cases like the speech recognition example I gave above. If we look at all the times "I'll be" appears in our corpus, it's probably followed by "back" a lot of times and "bassoon" very few times. That said, n-gram models are fairly limited. If you try to generate freeform text from them, you basically get semi-coherent nonsense, which makes them hard to use in things like chatbot applications. For that, we need large language models.
Large language models (LLMs) like the GPT models are language models but... large. They're trained on a LOT of data (often consisting of as much text as can possibly be scraped from the Internet), and the mathematical models themselves are much more complex. These days, they're all using a tool called Transformers, which are a specific kind of neural network, a type of mathematical model that's used in the vast majority of speech and language technology today.
I am not going to explain how neural networks work here (though I can point you to a nice Youtube series on the topic), but there's a few things you should know about them. First of all, while they were inspired by the way neurons fire in the brain, there's no reason to think that they actually work the same way as human (or animal) brains. Real brains are pretty complicated, it turns out, and while neural networks are also pretty complicated sometimes, they're just a lot of fancy linear algebra at the end of the day. Second, neural nets are not new. They can be traced back to the 1940s and have been studied seriously since at least the 1980s, but they didn't get popular until about a decade ago. That's because neural nets work best when trained on a very large amount of data--and the mid-2010s were when we started to have the data and computing power to make that possible. Third, it turns out that when you do have a ton of data and computing power, neural networks can work really well at processing things like text, audio, and images.
Transformers are a specific type of neural network that work really well on text specifically (though they're starting to be used for other things like speech sometimes). Transformers are set up to handle sequences of inputs (sequences of words in this case), and one of the things that makes them particularly good at language modeling is that they do a really good job at looking at previous context. As I mentioned before, in an n-gram model, when we're playing "guess the next word", we're only looking at one or two previous words and missing a lot of important context! In contrast, using a Transformer, we can look at an entire sentence or paragraph's worth of prior context and properly take it into account.
Transformers use a method called self-attention to help interpret all of this prior context. I am not going to fully explain how this works (and be aware that I am massively oversimplifying), but the basic idea of self-attention is that when we're looking at a sentence (or paragraph), at each point in the sentence, we can look at all the previous words we've seen and figure out which ones are the most "relevant" at this point in time. For example, if I start a sentence "I used to live in France, so now I know how to speak...", the self-attention model would hopefully tell me that the word "France" is highly relevant when I'm guessing the next word. We also repeat this self-attention process multiple times over different "layers" of our model, so that at each layer, we get a better understanding of how each word works in its context, and by the end, we can make a really good guess as to what the next word could be.
Transformers were invented in 2017, and the first GPT (where the T stands for Transformer) model was made not long after. These models have been hyped up in tech circles for years, but the older ones are... not that impressive? They're way better than any simple n-gram models, but they don't tend to stand up to close scrutiny. (The blog AI Weirdness has a bunch of funny samples from GPT-2.) The big change in the past few years has been that when you add a lot more layers to the model, go from training on a large amount of data to training on a massively giant truckload of data, and get better at adjusting your model based on human feedback, you can go from being pretty good at guessing the next word to being very, very good at predicting the next word.
And that's it. That's what LLMs are. They're really really good "guess the next word" machines. They're good enough now that, for the most part, they're going to output text that's grammatical and coherent. And often enough, it's accurate, just because if I start a sentence with "The capital of France is...", "Paris" is going to be a very good guess for the next word. But just to be clear, these models don't know what things about the world are true, and they output false statements all the time. That's because these models don't actually "know" anything beyond what patterns of words are common. They're not intelligent beings in any real sense, they don't have minds, and it's important not to treat them like people. They're just "guess the next word" machines or, per one very famous (and very good) paper, "stochastic parrots."
There is, of course, a lot of hype around these word guessing machines at the moment, which is why I think it's important to know what they actually are. There's a lot of really good and useful applications for language models, but there's plenty of harmful uses as well. And, no, I'm not talking about evil AI trying to take over the world and create a doomsday scenario. That's not how this technology works, and it's used to distract from the real important harms that are actually happening in the real world today. Like all systems trained on human data, it's prone to replicate human biases. (For example, it's not that hard to trick ChatGPT into saying only white men can be scientists.) Due to the hype, we're also seeing LLMs used in sensitive applications, such as replacing hotlines, where the fact that they sometimes say stuff that's not true is actually pretty bad.
Anyways, to once again TLDR: Systems like the GPT models are mathematical models that are really really good at predicting what word will come next in a piece of text. Because of this, they can output text that reads very nicely and may or may not be accurate. This has a lot of good uses and also a lot of harmful uses. However, they are not people or any other type of "intelligent being", and you should be suspicious of anyone making big claims.

ChatGPT has already wreaked havoc on classrooms and changed how teachers approach writing homework, since OpenAI publicly launched the generative AI chatbot in late 2022. School administrators rushed to try to detect AI-generated essays, and in turn, students scrambled to find out how to cloak their synthetic compositions. But by focusing on writing assignments, educators let another seismic shift take place in the periphery: students using AI more often to complete math homework too.
Right now, high schoolers and college students around the country are experimenting with free smartphone apps that help complete their math homework using generative AI. One of the most popular options on campus right now is the Gauth app, with millions of downloads. It’s owned by ByteDance, which is also TikTok’s parent company.
The Gauth app first launched in 2019 with a primary focus on mathematics, but soon expanded to other subjects as well, like chemistry and physics. It’s grown in relevance, and neared the top of smartphone download lists earlier this year for the education category. Students seem to love it. With hundreds of thousands of primarily positive reviews, Gauth has a favorable 4.8 star rating in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
All students have to do after downloading the app is point their smartphone at a homework problem, printed or handwritten, and then make sure any relevant information is inside of the image crop. Then Gauth’s AI model generates a step-by-step guide, often with the correct answer.
From our testing on high-school-level algebra and geometry homework samples, Gauth’s AI tool didn’t deliver A+ results and particularly struggled with some graphing questions. It performed well enough to get around a low B grade or a high C average on the homework we fed it. Not perfect, but also likely good enough to satisfy bored students who'd rather spend their time after school doing literally anything else.
The app struggled more on higher levels of math, like Calculus 2 problems, so students further along in their educational journey may find less utility in this current generation of AI homework-solving apps.
Yes, generative AI tools, with a foundation in natural language processing, are known for failing to generate accurate answers when presented with complex math equations. But researchers are focused on improving AI’s abilities in this sector, and an entry-level high school math class is likely well within the reach of current AI homework apps. Will has even written about how researchers at Google DeepMind are ecstatic about recent results from testing a math-focused large language model, called AlphaProof, on problems shown at this year’s International Math Olympiad.
To be fair, Gauth positions itself as an AI study company that’s there to “ace your homework” and help with difficult problems, rather than a cheating aid. The company even goes so far as to include an “Honor Code” on its website dictating proper usage. “Resist the temptation to use Gauth in ways that go against your values or school’s expectations,” reads the company’s website. So basically, Gauth implicitly acknowledges impulsive teenagers may use the app for much more than the occasional stumper, and wants them to pinkie promise that they’ll behave.
Prior to publication, a spokesperson for ByteDance did not answer a list of questions about the Gauth app when contacted by WIRED over email.
It’s easy to focus on Gauth’s limitations, but millions of students now have a free app in their pocket that can walk them through various math problems in seconds, with decent accuracy. This concept would be almost inconceivable to students from even a few years ago.
You could argue that Gauth promotes accessibility for students who don’t have access to quality education or who process information at a slower pace than their teacher’s curriculum. It’s a perspective shared by proponents of using AI tools, like ChatGPT, in the classroom. As long as the students all make it to the same destination, who cares what path they took on the journey? And isn’t this just the next evolution in our available math tools? We moved on from the abacus to the graphing calculator, so why not envision generative AI as another critical step forward?
I see value in teachers thoughtfully employing AI in the classroom for specific lessons or to provide students with more personalized practice questions. But I can’t get out of my head how this app, if students overly rely on it, could hollow out future generations’ critical thinking skills—often gleaned from powering through frustrating math classes and tough homework assignments. (I totally get it, though, as an English major.)
Educational leaders are missing the holistic picture if they continue to focus on AI-generated essays as the primary threat that could undermine the current approach to teaching. Instead of arduous assignments to complete outside of class, maybe centering in-class math practice could continue to facilitate positive learning outcomes in the age of AI.
If Gauth and apps like it eventually lead to the demise of math homework for high schoolers, throngs of students will breathe a collective sigh of relief. How will parents and educators respond? I’m not so sure. That remains an open question, and one for which Gauth can’t calculate an answer yet either.

Beginner’s Guide to Ridge Regression in Machine Learning
If you've ever dabbled in linear regression and found your model overfitting or struggling with multicollinearity, it's time to meet its smarter cousin: Ridge Regression. This technique is a powerful tool in the arsenal of machine learning regression techniques, especially when dealing with complex datasets.
In this beginner-friendly guide, we'll explore:
What Ridge Regression is and why it's essential
The mathematics behind it
When and why to use it
How to implement it in Python using scikit-learn
Its benefits, limitations, and best practices

Introduction to Ridge Regression
What Is Ridge Regression?
Ridge Regression, also known as L2 regularization, is a technique that modifies the standard linear regression model to prevent overfitting and handle multicollinearity. It does this by adding a penalty term to the loss function, which shrinks the coefficients of less important features.RStudioDataLab
Why Is It Needed?
Imagine you're trying to predict house prices based on features like size, location, and age. If some of these features are highly correlated (e.g., size and number of rooms), standard linear regression might assign disproportionate importance to them, leading to overfitting. Ridge Regression addresses this by penalizing large coefficients, thus promoting a more balanced model.YouTube+4LinkedIn+4SAS Customer Support Site+4
The Issue of Multicollinearity and Overfitting
Multicollinearity
Multicollinearity occurs when two or more independent variables in a regression model are highly correlated. This can make it difficult to determine the individual effect of each variable, leading to unreliable coefficient estimates.Investopedia
Overfitting
Overfitting happens when a model learns not only the underlying patterns in the training data but also the noise. This results in poor performance on new, unseen data. By adding a penalty term, Ridge Regression reduces the model's complexity, helping to mitigate overfitting.GeeksforGeeks+1RStudioDataLab+1
Comparison with Linear Regression
Standard linear regression aims to minimize the sum of squared residuals:
Loss=∑i=1n(yi−y^i)2\text{Loss} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (y_i - \hat{y}_i)^2Loss=i=1∑n(yi−y^i)2
Ridge Regression modifies this by adding a penalty term:
Loss=∑i=1n(yi−y^i)2+λ∑j=1pβj2\text{Loss} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (y_i - \hat{y}_i)^2 + \lambda \sum_{j=1}^{p} \beta_j^2Loss=i=1∑n(yi−y^i)2+λj=1∑pβj2
Here, $\lambda$ is the regularization parameter that controls the strength of the penalty.
Mathematics Behind Ridge Regression
Cost Function with Regularization
The Ridge Regression cost function combines the least squares loss with a penalty term:
J(β)=∑i=1n(yi−y^i)2+λ∑j=1pβj2J(\beta) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (y_i - \hat{y}_i)^2 + \lambda \sum_{j=1}^{p} \beta_j^2J(β)=i=1∑n(yi−y^i)2+λj=1∑pβj2
This penalty term discourages large coefficients, effectively shrinking them towards zero but not exactly zero.LinkedIn+6Cross Validated+6Medium+6
The Role of Lambda (Penalty Term)
Small $\lambda$: Model behaves like standard linear regression, with minimal regularization.
Large $\lambda$: Coefficients are heavily penalized, leading to a simpler model that may underfit.
Choosing the right $\lambda$ is crucial and often done through cross-validation.
When to Use Ridge Regression
Real-World Use Cases
Healthcare: Predicting patient outcomes based on numerous correlated health indicators.
Finance: Forecasting stock prices using a multitude of economic indicators.
Marketing: Analyzing customer behavior with overlapping demographic features.
Situations Where It Performs Better Than OLS
When the dataset has more features than observations.
When multicollinearity is present among predictors.
When a simpler model with better generalization is preferred.GeeksforGeeks+1IBM - United States+1
Python Implementation (with Code)
Let's walk through a practical example using scikit-learn.
Step 1: Import Necessary Libraries
python
CopyEdit
import numpy as np import pandas as pd from sklearn.linear_model import Ridge from sklearn.model_selection import train_test_split from sklearn.metrics import mean_squared_error

Step 3: Train the Ridge Regression Model
python
CopyEdit
# Initialize Ridge Regression with alpha=1.0 ridge_reg = Ridge(alpha=1.0) # Fit the model ridge_reg.fit(X_train, y_train)
Step 4: Evaluate the Model
python
CopyEdit
# Predict on test set y_pred = ridge_reg.predict(X_test) # Calculate Mean Squared Error mse = mean_squared_error(y_test, y_pred) print(f'Mean Squared Error: {mse}')
Benefits and Limitations
Benefits
Reduces Overfitting: By penalizing large coefficients.

from sklearn.linear_model import RidgeCV # Define a range of alpha values alphas = np.logspace(-3, 3, 100) # Initialize RidgeCV ridge_cv = RidgeCV(alphas=alphas, store_cv_values=True) # Fit the model ridge_cv.fit(X_train, y_train) # Best alpha print(f'Optimal alpha: {ridge_cv.alpha_}')
Cross-Validation Tips
Use k-fold cross-validation to assess model performance.
Ensure data is standardized before applying Ridge Regression.
Conclusion
Ridge Regression is a valuable technique when dealing with multicollinearity and overfitting in linear models. By introducing a penalty term, it balances the bias-variance trade-off, leading to more robust models. While it doesn't perform feature selection like Lasso Regression, it's particularly useful when all features are believed to be relevant.Cross ValidatedRStudioDataLab+1Medium+1
FAQs
What is the difference between Ridge and Lasso Regression?
Ridge Regression (L2 regularization) shrinks coefficients towards zero but never exactly zero, retaining all features. Lasso Regression (L1 regularization) can shrink some coefficients to exactly zero, effectively performing feature selection.GeeksforGeeks
Is Ridge Regression good for feature selection?
No, Ridge Regression doesn't set coefficients to zero, so it doesn't perform feature selection. If feature selection is desired, Lasso Regression is more appropriate.GeeksforGeeks
How to choose the best alpha value in Ridge?
Use cross-validation techniques, such as RidgeCV in scikit-learn, to test different alpha values and select the one that minimizes the validation error.
Can Ridge Regression be used for classification?
Ridge Regression is primarily used for regression problems. However, the concept of regularization can be applied to classification algorithms, such as logistic regression with L2 regularization.
Why is regularization important in ML models?
Regularization helps prevent overfitting by penalizing complex models, leading to better generalization on unseen data.

Everything You Need to Know to Decode Your VIN Effortlessly

If you've ever been curious about what your car’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) means or how to decode it, you're not alone. This 17-character alphanumeric code holds a wealth of information about your vehicle, from its make and model to its manufacturing country and engine type. Understanding your VIN can be incredibly useful, whether you're buying a used car, checking for recalls, or verifying a vehicle's authenticity. In this post, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know to decode your VIN effortlessly.
What is a VIN?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique code assigned to every motor vehicle when it’s manufactured. Think of it as a fingerprint for your car, providing a way to track its history, specifications, and much more. This 17-character string is standardized worldwide, meaning that regardless of where the vehicle was made, the same structure applies.
How to Read Your VIN
To decode your VIN, you need to break it down into different sections, each offering specific information about the vehicle. Let’s take a closer look at what each section of the VIN represents:
Characters 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI): These first three characters represent the manufacturer and country of origin. The first character shows the country where the vehicle was made, while the next two indicate the manufacturer. For example, a VIN beginning with "1" or "4" denotes a car made in the United States, while "J" indicates Japan.
Characters 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS): The next five characters give insight into the vehicle’s model, body style, engine type, and other features. These characters can vary depending on the manufacturer, but they typically help to identify the vehicle’s key specifications, like whether it’s a sedan, SUV, or a sports car.
Character 9: Check Digit: The ninth character is used to verify the authenticity of the VIN. It’s calculated using a mathematical formula and serves as a checksum to detect errors in the VIN. If your VIN passes the formula, you can be confident that it’s valid.
Characters 10: Model Year: The tenth character reveals the vehicle’s model year. This can sometimes be tricky because the model year is often different from the year the car was manufactured. For example, a vehicle made in late 2020 could be a 2021 model. Manufacturers use a letter or number to indicate the model year; for example, "A" represents 1980, while "B" stands for 1981. In more recent years, the system has been updated with letters and numbers in a cycle, so decoding the model year might take a bit of knowledge of the code.
Character 11: Assembly Plant: The eleventh character shows the location of the vehicle’s assembly plant. It indicates where the car was physically put together, which can be helpful for tracking down specific production details.
Characters 12-17: Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS): The last six characters are used to uniquely identify each vehicle. These typically contain a serial number, and since they are unique to each car, they help distinguish it from others manufactured by the same maker.
Why Is VIN Decoding Important?
Knowing how to decode your VIN can be incredibly beneficial in various situations. If you’re purchasing a used car, decoding the VIN helps confirm the vehicle’s history and verify that the car is not stolen or subject to any serious accidents or recalls. It also gives you insight into the car’s features, which can affect its resale value. Furthermore, checking the VIN can help you stay up-to-date with maintenance and recall notifications. Many car manufacturers offer VIN-based tools to check for recalls or service updates. click here
Conclusion
Decoding your VIN is a straightforward process once you understand the structure of the code. By breaking down the 17 characters, you can uncover key details about your vehicle, whether you’re buying, selling, or just curious about your car’s background. In an era of digital records and easily accessible databases, understanding your VIN is not only useful for tracking your car’s history but also for ensuring its safety and reliability. With just a little knowledge and the right tools, you can effortlessly decode your VIN and get valuable insights into your car’s identity.

How Does Probability Shape Decisions 2025

How Does Probability Shape Decisions 2025
Book-Style Explanation: Probability is the branch of mathematics that deals with the likelihood of different outcomes happening. In decision-making, probability helps individuals and organizations weigh the risks and rewards of various choices based on the chances of different results. When faced with uncertainty, we often assign probabilities — either formally (using percentages) or informally (gut feelings) — to possible outcomes. Higher probability outcomes are typically favored, while lower probability outcomes are treated with caution. For example, in finance, businesses use probability models to predict market behavior and reduce risks. In healthcare, doctors consider the probability of treatment success versus side effects. Even weather forecasts are based on probabilities (like a 70% chance of rain). Probability shapes decisions by providing a framework for thinking systematically about uncertainty, helping people avoid bias, emotional reactions, and guesswork. Tools like expected value, risk analysis, and Bayesian inference are all rooted in probability, guiding decisions in almost every field today. —

Real Talk: Easy + Relatable Breakdown Alright, let’s make this way less boring and way more real. Imagine you're standing in front of two vending machines. - One has a 90% chance of giving you candy. - The other has a 10% chance of giving you candy. Which one do you pick? Yeah, unless you're living on chaos energy, you're going for the 90% one. That’s probability at work. Probability is just life’s way of giving you hints — not guarantees — about what might happen. It's that little mental calculator we all kinda use without thinking: "Should I cross the street now?" "Should I invest in this stock?" "Should I text first?" We are constantly playing the odds, even when we don't realize it. Sometimes, even a low-probability move is worth it — like buying a lottery ticket. It’s not logical, but humans aren’t robots. We chase hope, dreams, excitement. That’s what makes decision-making beautifully messy. But when we slow down and actually think about probabilities, we usually make smarter moves. Like not betting your entire college fund on a coin flip. Or not walking outside without an umbrella when the weather app screams 90% chance of rain. Probability doesn’t tell you what’s going to happen. It tells you what’s likely to happen — and lets you play the game a little smarter. And in 2025, where the world moves faster than ever (and risks are way sneakier), making decisions based on probability thinking isn't just smart... it's survival. — External Resource: Want to dive deeper into how probability shapes thinking?
