Mathilde is sitting at her dressing table, absentmindedly brushing her hair while looking at the photographs on the table wistfully. Georg enters, still in his funeral dress. He looks miserable.

M (without looking up): Why are you here?

G: Don't you know it?

M: I have a suspicion.

G: My ballad... I need you. I love you still…

*awkward silence*

*despairingly, on the verge of tears* I can’t bear it alone!

*He throws himself down by her side. She touches his head and he breaks into sobs. She strokes his hair as he cries.After some minutes of incoherent sobbing he begins to talk.

G: I miss her so much already!

M: I miss her too. I will never forget how much she did for me, back when I married you.

G: Us three against the world, remember?

M: How could I ever forget? How happy we were back then...

G: It could be like that again. We could-

M (incredulously): We cannot go back to the way we were. Nothing will be like that again.

G (softly): Perhaps it won’t, but why shouldn’t we bear it together, in good times and in bad times?

Our children need you. I need you. Won’t you stay?

M (with a great sigh): You make it sound so easy. Why can’t you understand? I can't share your life and your sorrows if you won't share mine. I had no one but you, and you failed me!

Amalie: I think your dining hall is quite well done.

Gregory: It was such a fight with the builder and my sisters to get it done in my taste. Venetia--er, Lady Gracefield--wanted a fresco and an oculus in the ceiling, since Lord Gracefield refused to let her do that at their home. Never mind that the ceilings aren't tall enough for that!

Gregory: But having final veto power is really quite wonderful. It's my house, after all, and if she wants to remake Gracefield Grange over once the boys finish schooling, that's her choice!

Gregory: Sometimes I feel so insignificant when I look at the stars in the sky.

Gregory: Some people say Bambina Deer has a terrible guilty secret. Could it really be true?

Vivian: Er--the deer that we see outside in the morning, if we wake up early enough? What on earth could a deer have for a guilty secret?

Gregory: If my negotiations with the Pryce family finish in my favor, I may be able to add a ha-ha to the back yard, and then we needn't look at the garden shed when we are walking in the morning.

Vivian: I think it would be quite nice!

Gregory: Oh, Venetia. I heard that one of your boys had written--

Vivian: When I was at school, I always wrote and begged to be picked up and taken home. I even made my own invisible ink, to make it past the letter-reading matron!

Gregory: Do you suppose there might be any new symphonies this season?

Mathilde: None that I'm looking forward to yet.

Gregory: I heard there might be one about the new planet that was discovered. Did you know they want to name it George? I'm no Jacobite, but I don't think George is a good name for a planet...

George invited Napoleon Bonaparle and his son Gustave to visit from Champs les Sims. He had befriended them on one of his trips.

Gustave arrived, but accompanied by his mother, Mathilde. Napoleon remained in France with their other three children. She has remained in Riverview, but she's not found in Map View. She would not accept invitations to visit.

She finally showed up as a zombie to raid George's garden.

Madeleine was a painter, pastellist and illustrator, who specialized in elegant genre works and flowers. She exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts and The Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. George Painter stated in his book Marcel Proust she is one of the models of Proust's Madame Verdurin (In Search of Lost Time). Born into the upper middle-class, Madeleine had spent her childhood in the presence of artists. Her aunt, famous miniaturist Mathilde Herbelin (1820-1904), was her first teacher, and Charles Chaplin later became her tutor. Her marriage to municipal civil servant Camille Lemaire in 1870 and subsequent motherhood never prevented her from working tirelessly to perfect her talent. Her relationship with Alexandre Dumas fils cemented her position within the artistic elites and marked her emancipation and her move towards a more personal output.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born in Bruton Street, Mayfair, London on 21 April 1926. She married Prince Philip in 1947 and ascended the throne of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth on 6 February 1952 after the death of her Father, King George VI.
