On this rainy morning, Matt was trying to approach a mother and her calf.
Mom was resting below, coming up for air every twenty minutes, swimming a little while before heading back down.
Her calf was quite shy, coming up every five minutes (they can't hold their breath very long) but would quickly return to his mother.
Matt stayed at a distance for a while, observing how they would react to his presence. Their behavior didn't change, so he was not perceived as a threat. After some time, Matt dove.
The two were resting at about fifty feet deep and he managed (almost out of breath) to capture this image which expresses pure love to him.
Matt left soon after that. Although he wasn't seen as a threat, they didn't show any interest in interacting with him either. This was reason enough to leave them alone.
Being able to have a glimpse of the particular bond between a mother and her calf was a privilege.

Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo (2006)
Tumblr media
In preparation for Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, I rewatched the entirety of the show that inspired it and “Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo”, the straight-to-DVD film that serves as the show’s finale, despite being set somewhere in the middle of 5 seasons’ worth of episodes. Between the surprisingly somber tone of the actual last episode, Things Change and this… I’d go with the episode.
Robin (voiced by Scott Menville), Cyborg (Khary Payton), Raven (Tara Strong), Beast Boy (Greg Cipes) and Starfire (Hynden Walch) defeat and capture a super-powered Japanese ninja named Saico-Tek (Keone Young), at the expense of their tower. Under interrogation, the villain reveals the identity of the one who sent him: Brushogun. Traveling to Japan, the Titans find themselves in unfamiliar territory and with few clues to the mastermind’s location – if he even exists.
In terms of animation, the picture is just ok. There are a few errors (check out the disappearing wings on that size-shifting Godzilla knockoff) but generally it’s alright. There are even sequences, like that first fight with Saico-Tek, that looks quite good. It's not a step above what we saw during the series, however.
Considering the picture wasn’t released in theaters, the visuals can be forgiven. What makes this a 76-minute adventure only for previously established fans is the story. Trouble in Tokyo doesn’t make particularly good use of the characters. Raven, Beast Boy, and Cyborg spend most of the film just doing their own thing while the plot goes on without them. Starfire and Robin fare better, as we get to see a bit more of the relationship that was teased but never fully blossomed in the series between them, and even a nice moment that develops their first meeting (seen in Season 5's Go!). Brushogun’s identity is easy to decipher and his story is one we’ve seen time and time again. It’s a big letdown considering this is meant to be the Titans’ final adventure. It’s worse because the show’s trademark humor is largely absent, save for a few “fish out of water” gags that are only ok.
Trouble in Tokyo doesn’t feel like a movie. Yes, it’s longer than any two-parter, but this adventure isn’t particularly grand, we don’t learn anything new about the beloved characters, the adventure is inconsequential and nothing about it is particularly inspired. It isn’t “bad”. It’s watchable and if you want just a little bit more of the series, it’ll do. My advice is not, however, to watch it after you’ve finished the show, but to place it somewhere in the middle, I’d say between season 1 & 2, when the show began figuring out what it wanted to be. I wish I could say more positives but I kind of enjoyed the "lost episode" included in the bonus features more than the main event. (On DVD, July 23, 2018)

Summary
Although DC animated movies are certainly nothing new, we’ve recently been witness to a particularly special era influenced directly by New 52 comics since Justice League: War debuted in 2014 (2013, if you were to count Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox). In addition to DC’s premier superhero team enjoying their own group outings, we’ve also been treated to loose adaptations of classics such as Batman: Hush, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract and The Death of Superman.
But, as they say, all good things must come to an end.
And that’s where Justice League Dark: Apokolips War comes in. Initially assumed to be an adaptation of Darkseid War, it’s nothing of the sort. Some influence from Futures End seems to be in there, but I’d describe this as being an original story for the most part. For all intents and purposes, this is the Avengers: Endgame of the New 52-inspired DC Animated Universe. However, there’s one major difference: Apokolips War isn’t getting a sequel or continuation. This is it.
(Don’t worry. More DC animated films are on the way, with Superman: Man of Tomorrow releasing this summer. To be clear, nothing released beyond this point will tie in to the New 52 stuff. My hypothesis is that the focus will be shifted to standalone graphic novel adaptations and original stories.)
Positives
Much like the aforementioned Endgame – and unlike Infinity War – Apokolips War isn’t an overcrowded affair, even though it features guest appearances by various members of the Justice League, Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad, Teen Titans and Bat-family. For the most part, the narrative is pared down to following John Constantine, Clark Kent, Raven, Etrigan and Damian Wayne as they try to salvage what’s left after Darkseid has devastated the Earth.
To backtrack for a moment, the movie starts off with the Justice League’s heaviest of hitters taking the fight to Apokolips, but then everything goes horribly awry. Yes, this could be categorized as somewhat of a spoiler, although anyone who’s watched the first look featurette or kept up with news pertaining to the flick already knows this to be one of the basics. After that, there’s a two-year time jump that brings us to the ragtag group coming together.
If anything, I have to applaud the filmmakers for taking some serious risks. I can’t believe they got away with a lot of the stuff on display, and I’m not exactly talking about the R-rating and subsequent F-bombs. Instead, expect to see some gargantuan swings taken, with notable heroes you love dying in terribly gruesome ways. In fact, one fan favorite from the Bat-family gets eaten alive by a swarm of “Paradooms” (Parademon/Doomsday hybrids).
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This may be too much for some to digest (pun intended), but those who’ve wanted to see what it’s like when superheroes who seemingly have nothing left to lose make one last effort to overcome the ultimate evil in a post-apocalyptic world will dig what’s on hand. Also, expect for some other heroes to be, um, repurposed and serving Darkseid.
Overall, I found the plot to be quite engaging and never thought the action to be overdone or extensive. The latter notion was found all too often in some previous flicks, what with Justice League: War feeling like one endless action scene. But here, characters actually get a chance to breathe and I was at attention the entire time, knowing this was the end of the journey.
Negatives
Actually, I don’t have much to say on the negative side this time around. Although I’m admittedly not fond of seeing superheroes get massacred, the death toll worked in this context. Still, this aspect could potentially shock some viewers who may have gone in looking for the happiest of endings. So far, I think most took it in stride, as I’ve seen some very enthusiastic online reaction that I wasn’t able to avoid. (I try going in without outside influence as much as humanly possible.)
One other thing I’d like to mention in the vaguest way – because I’m trying to spare major spoilers – is what occurs at the very end. I wouldn’t exactly call it a “Deus ex Machina” in the purest sense, but you may find yourself asking “why didn’t they do that thirty minutes ago?” Regardless, it makes for a beautifully bittersweet conclusion to this saga.
Verdict
Now, I’m not going to say Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is the best animated DC movie ever made like some are, but it’s pretty damn good nonetheless. If you’ve come this far, you have no fathomable reason not to check it out. Here’s hoping the folks in the animation wing keep it up with whatever comes next.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War features the largest Super Hero cast in the history of DC Universe Movies with dozens of actors/characters spotlighted in a grand ensemble of talent reprising their roles from this six-year story continuum. Matt Ryan (Legends of Tomorrow, Constantine), Jerry O’Connell (Carter, Bravo’s Play by Play, Stand by Me) and Taissa Farmiga (The Nun, The Mule, American Horror Story) anchor the cast as Constantine, Superman and Raven, respectively – the triumvirate determined to assemble the forces necessary to lead humanity’s final attack. Alongside that trio are the long-running core of Justice League voices — Jason O’Mara (The Man in the High Castle, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Batman, Rosario Dawson (Briar Patch, Daredevil, Sin City) as Wonder Woman, Shemar Moore (S.W.A.T., Criminal Minds) as Cyborg and Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs, Insatiable, Ugly Betty) as The Flash – as well as JL-adjacents Rebecca Romijn (X-Men, The Librarians) and Rainn Wilson (The Office, The Meg) as the voices of Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively.
Tony Todd (Candyman) is the voice of the film’s key villain, Darkseid. The cast also boasts appearances by Camilla Luddington (Grey’s Anatomy) as Zatanna, Ray Chase (Justice League Dark, Final Fantasy XV videogame) as Jason Blood/Etrigan, Roger R. Cross (24, The Strain, Arrow) as John Stewart & Swamp Thing, Liam McIntyre (Spartacus: War of the Damned, The Flash) as Captain Boomerang, Hynden Walch (Teen Titans Go! Vs. Teen Titans) as Harley Quinn, Stuart Allan (Batman vs. Robin, Batman: Bad Blood) as Robin/Damian, Sachie Alessio (Batman: Hush) as Lady Shiva, and John DiMaggio (Futurama, Batman: Under the Red Hood) as King Shark.
Directors Matt Peters (LEGO DC: Batman – Family Matters) and Christina Sotta (Young Justice) helm Justice League Dark: Apokolips War from a script by Ernie Altbacker (Batman: Hush, Justice League Dark) and Mairghread Scott (Wonder Woman: Bloodlines), who is also credited with creating the story. Amy McKenna (The Death of Superman) is producer, and Jim Krieg (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) is co-producer. Executive Producers are Sam Register and James Tucker (Reign of the Supermen, Justice League Dark).
“Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is an epic story of supernatural proportions. A blockbuster, battle royale of a film filled with intense action and heartfelt emotions, serving up spotlight moments for our cast of unique characters,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Senior Vice President, Originals, Animation and Family Marketing. “This incredible thrill-ride takes us to the edge of the DC universe and sets the stage for an exciting new chapter.”
