Behind the Scenes of Fear Her - Part Seven 

Excerpt from David Darlington's interview with writer Matthew Graham for Doctor Who Magazine:

David Darlington [with a question about Life on Mars, which Matthew Graham co-created]: Sam Tyler. Rose Tyler. Coincidence... or something more sinister? Matthew Graham: Oh, God. [Sighs]. Originally Sam was called "Williams". And with respect to all the Williamses out there, it's a pretty boring name for your hero. And we were about to start filming when Kudos phoned up and said "We've just suddenly thought – 'Gene Hunt' is great, it's an iconic name. 'Sam Williams' just doesn't feel very punchy.". So I came up with a list of names and they didn't like any of them. So I said to Daisy, my daughter, what could his second name be? Not realising that Daisy had just watched Doctor Who on video... and she said "Tyler". Great! Tyler! Phoned up Kudos and they agreed. 'Sam Tyler'. Brilliant. And then I went back to Daisy and said "Where did you get that name from?" "Oh – Rose is called Rose Tyler...". Aaaargh! Everyone's going to think that we haven't got an original idea! So, er, yes. He is named after Rose Tyler. David Darlington: I really wasn't expecting a 'yes' to that question! Matthew Graham: No, you weren't, were you? But it wasn't coincidence – it was my daughter's fault! David Darlington: So that was her input to the show – given that your son gave Sam his first name...? Matthew Graham: I did have Sam's name in my Doctor Who episode, as well, and ruthless Russell has cut it out! He said, "I think we could lose this character of Sam Graham"... David Darlington: Aww... Matthew Graham: But Sam has been up and had his photo taken with David. It was the sweetest thing – he stood next to me in awe until David walked over. "Hello! I'm the Doctor! Nice to meet you!". And it was just wonderful to see it... David Darlington: Did he put his 'Doctor Who' voice on for it? Matthew Graham: He did! He put his 'Doctor Who' voice on and when I asked if there was any chance of a photo with him and Sam, he said "Yeah – I'll get my costume back on!" He'd just been in a puffer jacket, and he put his long coat on and put his arm round Sam. Sam couldn't believe it. David is just the nicest man in the world...

I watched The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People last night with a friend and honestly, these were probably some of my favorite episodes in Series 6! The story was excellent, the interactions between the humans and gangers was interesting and grounded, I think. I also really liked the dynamic with The Doctor and John Smith (doppelganger doctor), even if they made Amy unusually mean, it's still very enjoyable. I give it a 9/10 and highly recommend watching it. (It also made me cry a little at certain points.)

Will Graham had so much rizz that two serial killers killed for him during his trial just to set him free. One of them put him in there but missed him so much that he decided to kill the judge, and the other who barely knew him killed the bailiff to exonerate him. Even after finding out Will isn't the ripper he was still willing to kill for him.

everything he does is SO... so theater kid.... like he was definitely in school plays and got really into it. this hand motion was more sick in the head than what he did to hannibal.

Hannibal acting all sad after Matthew's attempted murder of him, being all, "Oh, I'm so heartbroken that my dearest friend Will Graham tried to kill me... I need to recuperate by composing some music, cook some food... please give me some privacy during this trying time..." When in reality he's too busy planning his next moves because what do you MEAN Will Graham tried to have me murdered (Excited)!!! Hannibal finding out that Will is vicious enough to have him assassinated from the bowels of the mental asylum Hannibal TRAPPED him in, ohhhhhh, I know there were confetti popping in his head for a week straight.

When children vanish into thin air in 2012 London, the Doctor and Rose find the answers in a seemingly ordinary household and a girl whose drawings can come to life.

The best opening to the episode, with the TARDIS landing between two big skips or shopping containers, and the Doctor getting back in and turning it around the other way. Also love how he described the silver sugar balls on fairy cakes as "cakes with ball bearings on top."

The writing in this one feels like it's aimed at a younger audience than some darker, often more complicated episodes, and this makes sense considering this section from the Wikipedia article for this episode:

""Fear Her" was an overcommissioned episode, which replaced a planned but unproduced script by Stephen Fry. Writer Matthew Graham was told by showrunner Russell T Davies that it was going to be an inexpensive episode and had to take place on a housing estate, but Graham was nevertheless thrilled to be asked to write an episode. Graham stated in 2011 that they "set out to do right from the start" making the episode more aimed at children, rather than adults and older Doctor Who fans, as the much darker finale would be broadcast following it. Davies specifically asked Graham to write for his seven-year-old son."

Apparently it got very positive reactions from kids who watched this episode, but a lot of bad negative responses from adults — I think adults need to remember that Doctor Who is a family show, and sometimes it's written for its younger audience! I enjoyed this one and thought the premise was interesting.
