Harrisburg, PA — Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt announced today that unofficial results in the Nov. 5 general election race for U.S.
Senate have triggered a legally required statewide recount.
Senator Bob Casey and Dave McCormick have vote totals within the one-half of 1 percent margin that triggers a mandatory recount under state law.
As of today, the unofficial returns for the U.S. Senate race submitted by all 67 counties show the following results for the top two candidates:
Robert P. Casey Jr. - 3,350,972 (48.50%)
David H. McCormick - 3,380,310 (48.93%)
Once counties finish counting their ballots, they must begin the recount no later than Wednesday, Nov. 20. They must complete the recount by noon on Nov. 26 and must report results to the Secretary by noon on Nov. 27. Results of the recount will not be published until Nov. 27.
The Department estimates that the recount cost will exceed $1 million of taxpayer funds.
This is the eighth time the automatic recount provision has been triggered since the passage of Act 97 of 2004. In the four cases in which the recount was carried out, the initial results of the election were affirmed. Those recounts and the costs for each were as follows:
2022 primary: Oz vs. McCormick, Republican race for U.S. Senate, $1,052,609.
2021 general: Dumas vs. Crompton, Commonwealth Court, $1,117,180.
2011 primary: Boockvar vs. Ernsberger, Democratic race for Commonwealth Court, $525,006.70.
2009 general: Lazarus vs. Colville vs. Smith, Superior Court race, $541,698.56.

Update on outstanding ballot totals
As of this afternoon, county election officials reported there are 60,366 uncounted provisional ballots and 20,155 uncounted mail-in and absentee ballots. That 80,521 total includes all ballots for which county boards of elections have not yet made a final resolution regarding their validity or eligibility to be counted.
As of the issuance of this release, the Department's election returns page [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com] reflects the unofficial totals that counties have reported. These numbers will change beginning Thursday morning, Nov. 14, as counties continue to canvass provisional ballots and otherwise count ballots. These changes are unrelated to the recount.”

In 2022, records, video camera footage, and deposition testimony produced in a civil case in Georgia' disclosed that its voting system, used statewide, had been breached over multiple days by operatives hired by attorneys for Donald Trump. Solving battery-free devices’ short-term memory loss
For decades, researchers have been searching for a better battery. Now an international team presents a bold new solution: ditch the battery altogether.
Led by Northwestern University and Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in The Netherlands, the researchers have designed and developed a new system that enables battery-free devices to keep time during intermittent power outages, solving a critical problem that has curbed research in the field.
Many small, battery-free Internet of Things (IoT) devices could work by harvesting ambient energy, such as solar, kinetic and thermal power. If fully adopted, using these devices would prevent trillions of used batteries from entering landfills. But because they switch between power sources, battery-free devices notoriously experience frequent, short losses of power.
“Naturally, removing batteries has consequences,” said TU Delft’s Przemyslaw Pawelczak, who co-led the research. “It means having lower storage capacity and lower reliability. Energy harvested from the environment is not always predictable.”
“We have embraced this and built a system that strings together fragmented periods of execution,” said Northwestern’s Josiah Hester, who co-led the research. “We built a custom system that reliably keeps track of time despite numerous power failures and interruptions for any IoT device.”
Hester and Pawelczak presented their work virtually this spring at the Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems (ASPLOS) 2020 annual meeting. The team presented two papers: One that outlines hardware for the novel timekeeping circuit and another that demonstrates that the circuit can be used to convert battery-powered devices into battery-free devices.

Hester is an assistant professor of computer science and electrical and computer engineering in Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering. Pawelczak is an assistant professor in TU Delft’s Embedded Software Lab.
Time is on our side
Timekeeping is one of the most vital resources for any computing system. Underlying almost all system services and security features, timekeeping helps the computer keep track of running applications. Most people, however, only notice the timekeeping function when it stops working.
If you have ever lost power while working at your computer, for example, then you know the agony of trying to restart the system. The computer can take several minutes to restart as it has to remember where you left off and run through a list of operations. And then, even when the computer is up and running again, any unsaved work could be lost.
3 billionBatteries enter landfills every year
If this happened every time a small IoT device — such as a smart watch, fitness tracker, security camera, smart thermostat or medical sensor — briefly lost power, these devices would be essentially useless.
That’s the beauty of Hester and Pawelczak’s system. A small device might briefly lose power, but it never loses its sense of time. That means it can restart so quickly that you might not even notice that the device lost power in the first place.
“Our device enables fast reconstruction of time and state from ‘breadcrumbs’ we left behind before a power failure,” Hester said.
Bypassing batteries
Hester and Pawelczak are motivated by their overarching goal to reduce the number of lithium-ion batteries entering the environment every year. Not only is lithium mining incredibly energy and water intensive, lithium is a flammable, toxic material that can even catch fire in recycling plants.
Major tech companies now estimate that we could see trillions more IoT devices within the next 50 years. That’s a lot of used and eventually discarded batteries.

“Working on battery-free energy-harvesting systems is self-evident, given the environmental impact that accompanies batteries,” Pawelczak said. “We don’t know the exact number of new devices that will emerge, but nobody doubts that the sheer volume of devices is massive and more and more consumer electronics will be powered by batteries. These batteries have to be replaced and later recycled, so we need to develop a system that reduces the carbon footprint of electronics.”
“If we hope to have a vision of computing that is sustainable, then we have to rethink how we design these systems,” Hester added. “Our technology will inform the design of the next trillion devices and enable IoT that is practical, scalable and useful.”

Atlanta’s SingleOps raises $6M for its outdoor-care focused software business
Today SingleOps, an Atlanta-based software startup, announced that it has raised $6 million in new capital. The startup’s service is built to support companies that deal with outdoor work like landscaping, tree care and lawn maintenance. It’s an example of the vertical SaaS trend that has come to the fore in recent years, with startups building software services tailored to particular business categories.
The market that SingleOps is focused on isn’t small, mind. The company claims it’s worth $100 billion each year. And that means there is lots of room for SingleOps to grow.
Before this new $6 million round, SingleOps had raised just $2.5 million, using that to scale up to 30 staff (its software team is remote, making the company more prepared for COVID-19 than most) and around 400 customers. How did it do that in an era when most startups raised $2.5 million to clean their offices? According to the company’s CEO Sean McCormick and president Taylor Gould in an interview with TechCrunch, being capital-efficient has been part of the company’s modus operandi since its early days. (You can build SaaS with limited capital if early customers write you checks, it turns out.)

But toward the end of 2019, SingleOps reviewed its SaaS metrics and, deciding that things looked good, aimed to accelerate by bringing on new capital. The $6 million was led by Kansas City-based Five Elms Capital, with the firm taking a board seat in the transaction. According to McCormick and Gould, they liked Five Elms’ focus on B2B SaaS companies like their own. Diligence with existing Five Elms portfolio companies also helped them in making the choice.
SingleOps’ product, notably, isn’t narrow. Instead, the company’s service can log leads, handle scheduling, help provide estimates, has a mobile app and deals with scheduling, cost tracking and invoicing and payments. With a little tact, the self-described “green industry” that SingleOps works with is not renowned for being on the cutting edge of technological change; by offering a broader feature set, SingleOps can sell a single service to bring businesses in its target niche all the way into the cloud era.
The package of features is sitting well with the market so far, with SingleOps growing both GAAP revenue and ARR by “well over” 100% in the last 12 months, per its executives. And for the SaaS fans out there, SingleOps averaged 120% net retention over the last 12 months.
It was the first call for TechCrunch that I’ve had that involved several mentions of tree climbing as part of a startup’s go to market motion. As such, we had no choice but to write about the company, as it’s different than most startups we talk to, and therefore rather interesting.
