     All Genji’s life, he has known blood. It follows him like a cloud, pooling up around him the longer he dares stand still. From his father’s empire to his brother’s betrayal, to the very nature of Blackwatch, to the chair he sits in now, Genji has known blood and violence and suffering.

     At least they were kind enough to give him a chair, he muses idly, eyes half glassy as he gazes down at the stumps of his legs where the prosthetics had been cruelly, carelessly removed, flesh and wire and metal held together into something grotesque and foreign and mechanical. It’s revolting, sickening like the smell of blood that clings to his skin like his self-loathing, thick and cloying and all-consuming.

     It makes his skin crawl.

     They’re asleep now, he’s sure, resting easy after a long, fruitless evening trying to get a single word out of him — which they did; 死ぬ. They hadn’t liked that. Perhaps the frustration is keeping them awake, or they’re figuring out a way to report what would most surely end in their failure and his death; either way, Genji won’t be in this room much longer, will he?

     He thinks back on the last time he was in such a state; without cybernetics at all, still young and weeping and so, so close to death. Dr. Zeigler had done what he had initially deemed impossible to save his life and get his legs back, in exchange for bringing down the Shimada clan — and now, at the end of it all, he wonders:

     Was it worth it?

     Is he satisfied now? Would he have made the same decision if he’d known the last years of his life would be spent hating every inch of him, only to end in the same way his misery began?

     There are footsteps in the hallway. Genji lets his head fall back against the back of the chair, burning eyes closing for what must surely be the last few seconds of peace he’ll be allowed.

She did come back early, didn’t she? She was suppose to be going on a mission to make sure things were on track, but she was having second thoughts. Her hat hid most of her face to the point her eyes wouldn’t look up towards him, doubting that it was good.

Hanzo thought his head would explode with the sudden thoughts rushing into his head. Joy hit him like a bus and a small smile formed on his face. He was going to have Jesse’s child. He was going to make Jesse’s dream come true. There was going to be a small Shimada-McCree (McCree-Shimada) running down the halls of their home. Bio: Jesse McCree, from Santa Fe, New Mexico, was born from a dysfunctional couple -- a father who called it quits and left just a few months before he was born, and a mother who became sick as the years went by and passed away when he was barely five years old. Forced to live on his own as an orphan on the streets, he tried and did everything to get something to eat, even if that meant stealing from others.

One day, however, he stopped being a lonely sassy kid from the streets. Somehow, his ability with a simple slingshot, plus the fact that he stole their wallets, caught the attention of a couple of Deadlock members. This is how he was taken in by the infamous group of troublemakers from Route 66. He wasn’t the only one, though -- Ashe, a girl around his age, also became an apprentice in Deadlock, all while having her omnic butler B.O.B. with her at all times.

With time and practice, Jesse became a reliable member of Deadlock, going up in the ranks as he grew up and became more experienced. He also changed weapons, going from an improvised slingshot to a real gun, a peacekeeper. He spent his childhood and adolescence causing chaos and stealing from others... until the day he got captured by Blackwatch, at the age of 17.

He didn’t know it was Blackwatch at first, just assumed these were people working for Overwatch, which became an official organization just a couple of years ago. He was face to face with the original Strike Commander, now the leader of Blackwatch, Gabriel Reyes. The man offered a deal to him, he could either rot in prison with the rest of the Deadlock members that were captured with him, or he could turn a new leaf and be under his wing. Jesse was fortunate to have been given a few hours to think about it, to reconsider and think about what he was doing with his life; it had... no meaning.

When Reyes returned expecting an answer, Jesse accepted his offer, betraying Deadlock permanently and taking this chance to become a better version of himself -- to become a better man.

Jesse spent the next 14 years as a member of Blackwatch and under the watch of Gabriel Reyes, who sort of became a father figure to him due to never having one when he was younger. He learned new techniques to apply in the battlefield, improved his aim and range and became a better man all around -- he’s still a sassy little shit deep inside, though. Unfortunately, when an explosion destroys Overwatch’s Swiss HQ, he had just quitted Blackwatch to become a solo vigilante at the age of 31.

Nowadays, Jesse  McCree travels alone and avoids the law, as he’s considered a criminal despite that not being the case. He does his best to fight actual criminals and bring justice to the world. He even got to serve a well-deserved payback to Ashe after a nasty reunion in Route 66, from which he came out victorious and brought Echo back online. He still has some personal business to deal with before officially re-joining Overwatch, but someday he will... someday.

Note: Follows very minimal Overwatch lore and a lot of personal headcanons.

         His assignments weren’t all bad.

    There were some he even thoroughly enjoyed. Like scouting missions, shoveling through overdue paperwork, coffee runs — pretty much anything he could accomplish alone — with maybe a few exceptions. He didn’t mind bodyguard duties, depending on who it was. In the case of Doctor Liao? He actually looked forward to it.

   His curiosity got the better of him; the Echo Project having flourished with recent research, it was said the omnic could be out in the field for testing in as soon as a few months. According to Reyes, there was a good chance it would be with him or someone else from the department, considering Overwatch didn’t necessarily want to be known for their omnic research after having battled an omnic crisis. So, for him, this position was gold. Who else has ever had the opportunity to help build their battle partner from scratch? As many hours as he had put in here, he at least had a little influence in her end design.

         Otherwise, Doctor Liao being pretty good company helped sway his opinion on the job allocation a good bit as well.

   The call of his name drew gaze up from the holopad in his hands, Echo dashing towards him, down the corridor of the wall he leaned to as eyes squinted in worry; those words coming from the bot immediately a cause for concern.

         “ — th’hell is it…?” he mumbled under his breath as he made an attempt to identify the object, only connecting the dots once a croak could be heard from within her palms.

              Oh — this wasn’t going to work.

   The gunslinger reeled back, eyes pondering on the animal for a moment longer before settling on the omnic’s overly delighted expression. “You found the thing outside; don’t ya think it should stay outside — ?” he asked dryly, not really seeking an answer.

    No, the cowboy wasn’t scared of amphibians or anything; there wasn’t much he was afraid of. But he definitely didn’t care for the jumping…or the croaking, or the way their eyes pointed in two different directions — or anything about them, really.

    “Why don’t we jus’ — ” He paused as a hand moved to close the peephole between her fingers, wanting to make sure there wasn’t any chance for the thing to escape. “ — close this back up, so you can put that thing back where it came from, before someone gets hurt.” and when he said someone, he definitely wasn’t referring to the omnic or himself.

              — yeah, they still had a few things to work on…

     “. . . Hurt?” Echo blinks, transparent brows furrowing; “Jesse, it’s a frog.” Regardless, she obligingly closes the gap between her hands, bringing her limbs a little closer to her chest once more. She blinks then, a slow smile splitting across her lips; “You’re not. . . Scared, are you?”

     She moves as if to open her hands once more — though she doesn’t, gesture a feigned one, for the frog’s sake, if anything — with an evil little “step” forward. “You’re always telling me about those hardcore missions, but you’re scared of a little garden frog?” She makes a few more advances, even going so far as to move her hands closer to the cowboy’s face, but after that, she finally retreats, floating backwards a safe distance.

     Once effectively out of what she presumes to be a frog’s average jumping range, for McCree’s peace of mind, she slowly uncurls her hands, peering down into the half bowl formed by her palms and fingers. “Hello, little guy,” she coos softly, once-devilish grin fading into a gentle smile. “Are you frightened? I’ll let you go where I found you, don’t worry.”

A young Jesse Mccree finds himself in the outback during a blackwatch mission. After a freak accident leaves most of his crew dead, the young man hires Roadhog on the spot to help him find his father figure, Gabriel Reyes.

I am Mako Rutledge: ((AU for duplicate Roadhog players))

In this AU, Mako never killed his wife after the Omnium blew. He continued to endure her abuse and still lives with her out of necessity. The entity known as Roadhog is someone entirely different that happens to share a name and likeness to him. Mako scrapes through life by trekking to Junkertown on a daily basis and working as a bartender at a tavern named ‘The Weeping Wombat’. Mako is a quiet, shy man that tends to keep to himself. He’s not afraid to use force when people are causing trouble in his bar however.

We’re being Overwatched: ((AU in which the junkers are Hired by Overwatch))

Junkrat agrees to Join in the reformed Overwatch rather than going to prison for the umpteenth time. Roadhog comes along for the ride.

Mako Rutledge owned a gun store in the city of rapture before enlisting in the Big Daddy initiative. Initially, he was used as a test subject on imprinting Big daddies on splicers so as to make it easier on little sisters to harvest from them. Due to his size and temper, he’s been nicknamed ‘Roadhog’ by the other splicers.

Appearance: As Jesse canon appearance remains the same. As Merx, he wears dark grey armor with no embellishments, a full-head helmet encases his head, mirrored on all sides. Peacekeeper is traded out for a specialized pistol with a rotating chamber that he can use to load rounds mid clip.

Jesse in this verse is quieter except in team settings, where he’s just as prone to rambling and making a fool of himself, perhaps moreso to keep up airs. Merx talks very little, and when he does it’s devoid accent. Blackout sometimes helps by applying a light filter over his voice.

Appearance: Hair is longer and kept in a braid, has both arms, when in public tends to wear expensive suits and gloves. In private he lets the burn scars on his hands and arms show, as well as the smoke tattooed up to his shoulders that stop just before they hit a shirt collar. Since he never was inducted to Blackwatch, he never created the persona of Jesse McCree, resident cowboy. More pending.

Jesse in this verse is quiet and slightly mad. He’s fought his way to the top, trusts no one, though he does have a private Elite within the gang that act as bodyguards as well as a special forces part of the gang. His conscious is whittled thin by a lifetime of hard sacrifices, and is prone to violence.
