Leaving Crystal Beach, I crept (~8mph) for two hours up the Gulf Coast. Texas 87 heads north away from the shore and shore breeze at the western edge of the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. I was fixing to ride through Port Arthur but was cut short by sharp knee pain presenting as ITBS. To blame: not riding at all for over a year, clipless pedals too tight...and other poorly positioned bike parts and bags. Predominantly pipeline guys at the Winnie Days Inn and nearby fast food joints. But also, a pile of cat food cans and a few stray cats. I cranked up the heat, ate fast food, drank beer and watched cable TV.

I managed my reluctant knee by pedaling with my right foot opening to the road. To my memory, the road got much longer and the headwind much stronger when I entered Louisiana. Really I was just tired of riding. At the 8 mile mark into Louisiana, I stopped at a convenience store and, looking pathetic, asked Dwayne (Duane?) if he could get me down the road a ways so I could make my accommodation before dark. He was headed to Cameron for work and helped me out to the tune of 28 miles! Cars are so fast! Duane was an off-shoreman, or a supervisor in that field. He was easy to ride with and good humored. The first crew of guys I solicited for a ride called me "baby", and I think I heard Duane call me "young buck". The generosity and miles passed was dope in my veins. My knee wasn't as excited about it all and about halfway Grand Chenier, I became sullen. Daylight was fading and my second Warmshowers stay seemed very far away. But then. Melissa and Ervin were beyond hospitable. Didn't have any beer in the fridge when I arrived. Hoped in the car and picked some up. Hungry. Red fish on the grill, followed by crawfish etouffee then king cake. Two adoring dogs underfoot but a cat in charge. A dry and warm night's rest on the pull out sofa and coffee and king cake in the morning. Beyond hospitable.

Rimmy the dolphin deemed non-releaseable

After 9 months of rehabilitation and care here at TMMSN, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries has deemed Rimmy non-releasable due to a respiratory condition that will require long term care and treatment. Rimmy is a young animal that will benefit from socialization with other dolphins as she continues to receive treatment and returns to health. NOAA will choose her permanent home based on her particular social and medical needs.

Rimmy was initially found stranded and rescued from the McFaddin Wildlife Refuge beach near Sea Rim State Park in September 2017. She has been receiving care from our staff and volunteers since that time and we thank you all for your support and donations to her recovery. A CT scan and bronchoscopy completed early in the rehab process helped us to diagnose her extensive respiratory lesions for which she has been treated with antibiotics and anti fungal medication. She pulled through an extremely critical time and our staff is grateful that she is stable and making progress. We have started the process of relationship building to which she has been very responsive.

Exploring the Texas Coastline part 1

3/3/2021 After recovering from having to camp out in our own home due to the Texas ice storm we decided to escape Home in the patriot. Our fifth camping trip this year. We headed to Sea Rim State Park very near Port Arthur on the Louisiana State boarder. The idea is to sample the beaches all the way down the Texas coast. On arrival at the Sea Rim SP we paid $24 for two nights (second night half price) Not much to Sea Rim the sand was hard packed but the beach was very very very narrow so we decided to risk it and take our chances on the rest of the beach further down that’s part of the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge.
