Quicken; Photography Touch

My immediate reaction or something I noticed upon entering the Engine room, was a direct contrast between the displayed photographs and the space that they were being displayed in. Of course it’s a nonsensical sort of initial response as that is what gallery spaces are meant to be, they are meant to highlight and allow an efficient setting for works of art to occupy and live in. I found there to be quite a strong contrast between what I was looking at and the space itself, the photographs almost held a dark veil over them, and the only optimal option to actually engage with them was from very close up and intimate. Inconveniently, and perhaps very irrelevant to this work, I had a terrible sleep last night and my already heavy and achy skull and heavy eyes felt as if I was forced to look deeper into the dark images, surrounded by the stark white space. 

What I found most compelling about these two photographs, which i’ll assume are called Reaching #1 and #2, was the human element embedded within it. It was something that I could easily put myself into, non gendered and non targeted at a specific type of person. All that I could see was some ‘human’ arms. Now this is not to say that they weren’t completely non specific, as they did exclude deeper skin tones. But regardless of this somewhat non-identifiable inclination of the photographs that I encountered, I think it best to write about the emotion I felt from viewing them, #1 exudes a sense of calm, self-awareness, control, independence. #2 evoked a lack of control, stress and dependency on the decaying and the cut down, the unrooted.

Quicken Exhibition and Artist Talk at Engine Room  Quicken; Photographic Touch is a photographic exhibition made up of practicing female Massey University alumni, curated by Massey staff members Jane Wilcox and Caroline McQuarrie. Quicken is running in Engine Room, a gallery on the Massey University Wellington campus.  The artists featured in Quicken are Poppy Lekner, Briarna Martelletti, Johanna Mechen, Mizuho Nishioka, Maria Sainsury, Deidra Sullivan and Virginia Woods Jack.  The works in Quicken all engage with touch and tactility. This includes the concept of the unseen touch in photography, the touching of light to sensitive material, and stands in opposition to the idea of the camera as an obstruction between the photographer and their subject, of distance. Quicken encourages the audience to think about the inherent intimacy of photography. This concept is explored through a variety of different outputs by the artists - the relationship between photography and light, physical and emotional touch, relationships with friends, family, home and the artists own unwell body.  The artist talk I attended was lead by Caroline McQuarrie and Jane Wilcox with a panel of Poppy Lekner, Johanna Mechen and Maria Sainsbury. This talk was immensely helpful as Jane and Caroline began by unpacking their curating process. They began with a beginning point of Female Massey Graduates currently working in wellington (they had decided they would rather focus their budget on printing than transporting work/artists to wellington), and from here reached out to this group to see what work they currently had, from here they begun to develop their theme and selection.  This exhibition is a good example for us, perhaps most obviously in that it is a purely photographic group show. This stands as a good precedent for how multiple artists can contribute greatly varied work to explore a collective theme. This also shows how a show can be achieved on a smaller budget. The works in Quicken are all (with the exception of Lekners) unframed and pinned to the wall, however the scale and arrangement feels well considered and tailored to each individual work.  This is especially the case in the display of Mizuho Nishioka’s Flotsam, Jetsam and Legam. This work is a series images of scanned debris from the flood of Nishioka’s family factory. The scans themselves were done on a flatbed scanner pulled out of the same flooded factory, left uncleaned. The resulting images of these scanned objects sit on a layer of dirt and mud. This in combination with the uncanny, flat depth of field given by the scanner and the earthy tones against the black back drop gave me the feeling that these objects are being viewed as they float to the surface of the dark floodwaters. The large grid like display feels monumental, especially where it sits on the wall between Maria Sainbsurys smaller prints and Briarna Martelletis lighter, bluer prints. It also gave me the impression of something archival, almost a museum like catalogue of recovered artefacts.  The bottom right rectangle of the grid is left empty, seeming to say that the series is not finished, and maybe that there is no end to the number of recovered objects that Nishioka could have catalogued.  The Engine Room is a white walls gallery, a blank canvas for the curator to adapt to best fit the work they are displaying. The simplicity of the display in Quicken serves the artworks. There is a lot of very varied work on display here and too complex or overdone of an arrangement or installation may have only overwhelmed the viewer and drowned out the outwork itself. Caroline and Jane spoke about enjoying these as they are not works that ‘shout’, they draw the viewer in and quietly ask them to consider them, they offer subtle and varied readings and gentle, emotive responses. There was a simultaneous sense of lightness and heaviness to this exhibition offered by the variation of emotional tone of the works. The openness and accessibility of the display means that there are no obstacles between these works, making them much easier to consider as a collective, allowing them to contrast and inform each other.  - Mckayla Woodroffe
