Budget 2024: Startups Seek Removal Of Angel Tax And Investment Incentives
The Indian startup community has high expectations for the Union Budget 2024, which is scheduled to be unveiled on July 23. The BJP-led NDA government’s third term will prioritize daring actions, as noted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and startups are expecting for policies that would spur innovation and growth in the industry.
Key Expectations from the Budget
Indian startups are pushing for the “angel tax” to be repealed and are looking for financial advantages. Startups in their early stages think that eliminating this tax will improve capital formation and attract important investments. Startups in the health tech space are also seeking more capital to propel their industry forward.
Economic Impact of Startups
Startups are crucial drivers of economic growth, generating new jobs, innovations, and services. As of December 2023, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) identified 1,17,254 startups, which have collectively created over 12.42 lakh direct jobs. This substantial contribution underscores the importance of supporting the startup ecosystem.
Industry Voices
Vinod K Singh, Co-Founder and CTO of Concirrus: Singh emphasized that eliminating the angel tax is essential for capital formation and attracting investments. He also called for streamlining the duty structure and reducing high tariffs on electronic inputs to bolster the startup ecosystem and drive innovation. Additionally, expanding the Fund of Funds and introducing low-interest loans would be beneficial.
Rajiv Lamba, Co-Founder and CEO of Surveysensum: Lamba highlighted the need for technological inclusion alongside financial inclusion. He suggested a 20–25% increase in budget allocation for AI-based skill development and entrepreneurship, noting that training youth in AI is a strategic investment in the nation’s future. Lamba also emphasized incentivizing investment in AI startups and R&D initiatives to boost local innovation.
Raja S, Founder and MD of Hearzap: Raja expressed that health tech startups are eagerly anticipating increased funding in the upcoming budget. This investment is expected to bring cutting-edge healthcare solutions to rural and underserved areas, bridging existing gaps in care. Raja emphasized that the budget aims to ensure access to essential health services, including specialized care, for all individuals in India.
Vivhan Gulati, Director of Mediagraphics PR: Gulati highlighted that removing the angel tax would greatly benefit early-stage startups and their investors. This move is expected to create a more conducive environment for innovation and growth by enabling startups to attract essential capital without the burden of excessive taxation. Gulati believes this change could significantly improve the ease of doing business and contribute to the overall growth of India’s startup ecosystem.

Why Rise of the Guardians means a lot to me
In 2010, my dad passed away from complications due to lung fibrosis. I was in school at the time as mediagraphic, and it was a rough, devastating time for me. The following 2 years was just me trying to get by mentally, and I felt like I was going through a slog. I’m still surprised I didn’t turn self destructive in the worst kind of way, though a large part of that was thanks to my friends.
Then I learned of an upcoming animated film, which was being worked on by Johanne Matte aka Rufftoon. It started through her showing the eyes of a character in her personal comic known as “Roommates” which was simply featuring Zhao from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and a few of her OCs from her Water Tribe comics.
That character was Pitch Black, and he was one of the reasons I checked out Rise of the Guardians when it finally came to theaters, even though I only got to see the Danish version at the time.
For some strange reason, that I’ve never been able to explain, Rise of the Guardians was the first movie where I really learned to sympathize with the villain. And this was long before I even knew of Pitch Black’s origin from the Guardians of Childhood books. Movie wise, I’d liked villains from Dreamworks before. Megamind had come out in 2010, but it didn’t have the same effect on me. Shrek speaks for itself, a character who would be considered a villain in a fairytale was the hero, and so on and so fourth.
Pitch Black however, was the villain through and through. He started as a villain, had a triumph as a villain, and was eventually defeated as a villain. There was no sudden realization, no turn-point that gave him a redemption in the movie. Hell, Tooth gets payback for her fairies by getting to punch his tooth out, a comeback to when he mocked her at her lowest (”Or what? You’ll stick a quarter under my pillow?”)
So what made this different? What made such a difference?
Simply put? Loneliness.
One might say it started with the Antarctica scene, but when I think back, it’s obvious that it starts further back, at the Tooth Palace, when Pitch Black recounts his time in the Dark Ages.
“Meanwhile, everyone wrote me off as a bad dream, ‘oh don’t worry there’s no such thing as the Boogeyman!’“ and you just hear how... angry he is. How frustrated. He is screaming into a void without being heard.
I didn’t notice this on a first time watch. But I did notice it during the Antarctica scene.
“I don’t know what it’s like? To be cast out? To not be believed in? To long for a family?”
I remember wanting to cry all over again, because it resonated so hard with me. I had lost family, and I wanted so badly to have it returned. Learning Pitch’s origin only helped to solidify it. It’s hard to explain why, but that particular phrase has continued to resonate with me through all these years.
There’s a lot more to things than just Pitch resonating with me, that made me love the movie as much as I do. The music, the animation, those are essential parts that have kept me loving the movie for as long as I have. Hell, it’s what brought me back to writing for fandom again. It’s a large part of what pulled me out of a terrible dark place, of wanting to be creative in assorted ways again.
I wouldn’t mind a series, because there’s so much potential. But at the same time, I also want to preserve the movie as is.
But thank you, Rise of the Guardians, for giving me something to believe in these past 8 years.

Alright guys, real talk!
So, you want to work with art? Then usually, people tend to go after one of the typical dream art careers, like animator, character illustrator or storyboard illustrator or something along those lines, and that is completely cool. It is a lot of creative peoples dream job.
I won't tell you to give up your dream job, but I want to suggest another option.
In danish my education/job title is called mediegrafiker, which roughly translates to Mediagraphic, which in english is a Media Graphic designer. And let me tell you: it rules. You get to draw, make banners, create bookcovers, magazines, flyers, emballage design, patterns for clothes, videos, moodboards, templates, product images, logos, and all that good stuff! And there is tons of work!
New businesses are shooting up like grass and every business with any respect for themself, need their own designer to create an image for them.
If you get employed by anything else but a publisher or a commercialbureau you will even get pretty reasonable hours, because the deadlines are not that harsh.
Deciding on this career was the best thing i ever did for myself, and I am so very happy with my life now that i get to be creative in a way that is really appreciated!
AND there is great possibilities of working from home or be freelancer!
So yeah, if you are sitting there, with a creative dream, and don't know what to do with your life, this is your sign!

BORNOUT.
No obstante yo me pongo a pensar y digo
