         The sun is slowly starting to make it’s descent in the sky but you’ve still got a few good hours left of daylight to continue celebrating with the group of men who are sitting around your outdoor patio table. Will has just resumed his seat after he turned off the grill and he’s bringing his beer up to his lips to sip at it. Benny is sitting across the table from him in between Santiago and Catfish, who had taken the seat next to yours. They’re all idly chatting about sports as you relax after finishing a wonderful meal of hotdogs and burgers.

         The boys had descended on your home about five hours ago prepared with all the necessities to throw a bar-be-que in honor of your birthday. To say the least you had been surprised because you had told them that you hadn’t been in the mood to celebrate this year. Luckily for them you had never been able to say no to them, so when they had arrived they had quickly overtaken your abode.

         “Hey birthday girl!” called Santiago from across the table and your eyes focused on him. “What’s got you spacing out?” he asks kindly as he grins over at you. You shook your head at him and a soft bashful smile graced your lips.

         “Nothing, I’m just glad you guys came over.” you said as you leaned back in your chair with a loving smile sent his way.

         “Yeah, and here you were saying that you didn’t want to celebrate.” Benny sarcastically pipped up as he took a swig of his beer.

         “Leave her alone Benny.” both Catfish and Will said at the same time making both Santiago and you burst out in laughter.

         “So I think it’s birthday present time.” Santiago says suddenly and you groan and roll your head over to look at Catfish with a pleading look. He’s already leaned back in his chair with his arms crossed over his chest and he holds his hands up as if to say he had nothing to do with this.

         “They’re your friends.” you hissed at him and he grins over at you cheekily.

         “They’re your friends too mi corazon.”(my heart) he said around a laugh and you purse your lips at him in annoyance which makes him laugh louder.

         “Oh c’mon it’s not gonna be that bad.” Santiago promises as he pulls out a medium sized gift bag that he slides across the table to you. “Open mine first, it’s the best one.” he says with a wink thrown your way.

         “I thought I was supposed to save the best for last.” you tease him as you laugh at his antics.

         “Oh no on your birthday you save the worst for last, that’s why Fish is gonna be last.” Santiago quips back making both Benny and Will laugh out loudly.

         “Estúpido bastardo” (stupid bastard) Catfish grumbles out to his friend and you look over to him with a grin and a wink. You don’t see him freeze at your gesture since you’re turning back to Santiago’s garish gift bag, it’s all neon colors that do not go together with lots and lots of tissue paper stuffed inside of it haphazardly, but the others at the table notice.

         It has been months that they have been trying to build up his confidence so that he would feel comfortable asking you out. They all knew way before he did that he was falling in love with you and they had also known that you had already been in love with the pilot since you met him. Unfortunately Francisco “Catfish” Morales had horrible self esteem after the many years of being beaten down by his ex. So they had been patient with him and tried to build up his confidence by reminding him of all the little things you did for him to show him that you cared. They had been hoping that by planning this little birthday celebration for you that it would give him a good enough excuse to confess to you.

         But what they didn't know was that Catfish had already been planning on doing something special for your birthday to show how much he cared about you. And he had found the perfect gift to show you how much he loved you. He smiled as he leaned down and placed the small teal gift box on the table and waited his turn to give it to you.

         You had known the boys for roughly five years now. It was actually Benny who had befriended you first when he had spotted you at the bar by yourself one night. He had tried his hand at flirting with you and had uncharacteristically struck out. But the friendship that had easily formed instead of romance that night had led to him introducing you to the group. So it wasn't hard for all of the men to effortlessly take you in as one of their own.

         Over the years of knowing them you had carved your spot in the group as the confidant. Whether it be with Santiago where he took you with him while he went for his doctor appointments so that you could help him track of it all. Or with Will he would go over his speeches with you and run them by you first to see how they flowed and resonated. Or with Benny where the two of you would just hang out and relax before his MMA matches so that he wouldn't have any distractions. 

         But with Catfish it was a little different and recently he had only found out how different you were with him as opposed to the other guys. You see Catfish came to you when it all got to be too much for him. When the stress was so overwhelming, or the nightmares too real. The first time when he had come to for help it had been like a breath of fresh air for him. He had called you to ask for help and you stepped up in such a huge way. You had shown up on his doorstep with bags of take out, a bright happy smile, and a calming affect that seemed to even get through to his screeching toddler daughter. You had told him to sit at the dining table and just wait, then you had moved as if you were a whirlwind. Plating the take out, entertaining his daughter so instead of her screeching cries she was now screeching with laughter. 

         When he was adrift in all the stress and uncertainty you had come in and been his anchor. His guiding light. After that first time he had thanked you so profusely that you had to grab a hold of his face to focus him and told him that you would always be there for him no matter what. And you had been. Sheepishly Catfish knew there were a few times when he had called for your help that you had left dates early so that you could be there for him or family gatherings. And when he had apologized for pulling you away from those you had easily waved his apology away telling him that there will always be dates to go on and gatherings to have with family. But when he needed your help that took precedence. 

         So when Catfish had seen your gift in the window of a store he was passing he knew immediately that it was perfect for you. His hands fiddled with the box in an anxious way. But his hands instantly calmed when yours came up to rest over his. He turned his head sharply to look at you and saw that you had already opened the others' gifts while he had been thinking.

         "You alright Catfish?" You asked softly and he nodded quickly before sliding the box across the table to you. He sent you a reassuring smile that did a poor job of making his nerves. Your responding smile was full of happiness and your eyes sparkled as you watched him for a moment more before turning to the box.

         His eyes were trained on you as he watched you slowly untie the ribbon on the box and then pull the lid off the box. The other three men leaned forward over the table to see if they could get a peek at what you had received. While the other watched the box Catfish watches you. He watched as your breath caught in your chest and wouldn't escape out of your mouth. He watched as your eyes blinked rapidly as tears pooled in your eyes. And he watched as the most brilliant and shining smile to ever fall on your lips spread across your face.

         Your fingers reached in and pulled the sterling anklet from the box to hold and show it off proudly. It had a large silver anchor attached on either side with two delicate chains. You held it delicately in the palm of your hand and turned to him.

         "It's beautiful Fish." You said so softly that Catfish felt his heart thud heavily in his chest. 

         "What the hell dude! You made the birthday girl cry!" Called out Benny and Catfish watched as you laughed through your tears turning the younger Miller brother.

         "All good tears I swear." You respond before turning back to look at Catfish. He watches you with a soft look over his face and you grin widely at him before suddenly those grinning lips that he's thought about more times than not are pressing sweetly to his. His breath stops as he feels your lips on his and he's quickly returning the kiss. His hands come up to gently cup your face to keep him steady and he deepens the kiss making you gasp against his mouth. He doesn't slide his tongue into your mouth like he wants to, he knows he'll get shit from the guys if he does. 

         Loud cheers are sounding out around the two of you and you begin to laugh into the kiss before slowly pulling away. The boys are all cheering and whistling at the two of you but all Catfish can focus on is you. Your shining bright eyes as they dart around his own face, your slightly swollen lips that look freshly kissed, and the love and happiness is radiating from you as you gaze at him. "I love it Fish." You whisper to him with an infectious grin. He goes to speak but you beat him to it. "And I love you."

         Catfish's world has suddenly deafened around him. He knows he's gazing at you with wide eyes like a fool but hearing those words cross your lips have upended everything in his world. He's surging forward again and pressing a soft peck to your lips quickly.

         "I love you too." He responds and then turns to the boys. "You've got five minutes to beat it or you're going to be getting an eyeful." He warns and almost instantly all three men are jeering and cheering as they quickly vacate the backyard. You laugh when Catfish turns to you suddenly overcome with nerves. "I didn't mean-"

         "It's ok. I'm down for whatever strikes us." You reassure him and he's pulling you into a warm tight hug before pressing his lips to yours again.
