The colour of Turning Red – Part 8
Here's a link to Part 1.
And then red panda Ming (Mingzilla) shows up. Mei's mother is now literally and figuratively a monster ruining her life at this point. Also note that her fur is shaped like flames.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the final action sequence, Wu and the aunties free their pandas to help out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like Ming jumping over the car at the beginning of the film, when their family needs them, they become action heroes. We even get a sky beam.
Tumblr media
When it comes to the aunties and Wu resealing their pandas at the end of the film, I want to note how much less painful it is for them at the end of the film to tuck their pandas back away again. It doesn't feel like the panda is being torn from them like it did for Meilin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Ming, it's different. Here, we return to one of my favourite visual motifs in the film, Red surrounded by teal, but this time instead of a single spot of red, there's two. This is Ming reverted to her teenage self, and we get a sense of how much she was struggling just from her outfit—a dull, teal uniform. She's feeling the pressure to be the person she's expected to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then we get my other favourite motif, Ming's hair is loose.
Tumblr media
And Mei listens to her and brushes her hair back behind her ear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's the first step to her mother pulling herself back together again.
Then we get this scene, where Ming grows up, and we see her get her hair under control and the teal of her clothes become more vibrant. As they travel, the shadows become less harsh and warm light spills in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It doesn't look easy. The look on Ming's face says it hurts.
Tumblr media
When Ming separates from her panda, we don't get pain like we saw with Mei, but instead we get sadness.
Tumblr media
This backward glance from Ming's panda calls back to the backward glance Mei's panda gave her back when she was trying to separate from it.
Tumblr media
And we get this image, literally showing the generational divide.
Tumblr media
And when Meilin again chooses to keep her panda, but this time with the acceptance of her family, instead of explosively exiting the ceremony like last time, she soars up into the sky where she again finds acceptance with her ancestor Sun Yee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, I love when flying is used to convey the emotion of a scene. This moment is truly ascendant.
One more part to go...

Turning Red (SPOILERS)
Pixar has a dude problem. Of their 25 released feature films, only one up to this point was co-directed by a woman, Brenda Chapman on Brave, and it was highly publicized that she was basically kicked off a highly personal project because of the boys’ club atmosphere. It’s ten years since that film’s release, and while that particular ratio hasn’t improved overall (though we are getting better with nonwhite directors/co-directors like Pixar mainstay Peter Sohn on The Good Dinosaur and the upcoming Elemental, as well as playwright Kemp Powers on Soul), we HAVE arrived at Domee Shi’s Turning Red, a highly personal passion project that is noted not just for its director, but many other high-level positions have been filled by Pixar’s women. So, how does it hold up?
Taking inspiration from Shi’s own life growing up as Chinese-Canadian in Toronto, the film follows Mei Lee (Rosalie Chieng) in 2002. She’s 13 and loving life, with a great group of friends-loyal Miriam (Ava Morse), deadpan Priya (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), and ball of rage Abby (Hyein Park)-and genuinely loving parents Ming (Sandra Oh) and Jin (Orion Lee). She divides her time between school, geeking out over boy band 4*Town, and helping out at her family temple. After one particularly stressful and embarrassing day involving art she’s drawn of an older crush and Ming’s over-the-top reaction, Mei finds herself transforming into a giant red panda overnight. After trying and failing to hide this (with the obvious puberty metaphor going from subtext to just text as Ming cheerfully brings out pads), it’s explained that this actually runs in the family thanks to the magical connections of her ancestor Sun Yee. But, Ming promises, there’s a special sealing ritual on the night of the upcoming red moon that will take care of it, and they can get back to normal. Complications start to arise, however: her friends think this is great, especially because the newfound panda popularity is a boon to raising money for a 4*Town concert. And Mei herself is beginning to enjoy her newfound independence...
The above summary perhaps makes the film sound like your run-of-the-mill rebellious teenager animation narrative, but not so. It’s far more nuanced and tricky than what we usually get on that front. First, there’s the fact that Mei doesn’t WANT to rebel at all at first. She’s happy with her life on the surface, genuinely loves her mother, and takes great pride in her heritage and taking care of the temple. Ming, too, is hardly an authoritarian at first, mostly coming off as overbearing yet well-intentioned in her helicopter parent tendencies. But it becomes gradually clear that these issues have been passed across generations, and not dealt with healthily at all (see also Encanto, which deals with this excellently in an admittedly distinct fashion). Therefore, the wild climax feels genuinely earned as Ming unleashes her own kaiju-sized panda form. Handy metaphor for repression, ain’t it? The rest of the family and community is sketched in well: Jin is mostly quiet but gets a lovely articulation of the film’s themes at one juncture; the initially severe Grandma Wu softens but never compromises herself, and the aunts she brings along add some welcome warmth; Mei’s friends are perfectly dorky “cringe” teenage girls (everything Abby does is hilarious); and the jerky Tyler gets some funny moments in both his thoughtless opportunism as well as his own buried love for 4*Town.
Beyond the story, the next most distinctive part of the film is its look. Taking from Shi’s style that she established in her wonderful Pixar short Bao (which easily outshone the film it was attached to, Incredibles 2), it eschews the typical Disney or Pixar leanings for a style far more influenced by 80s and 90s anime. This bears out both in the designs, which resemble a fusion between the likes of Studio Ghibli, Sailor Moon, and Rumiko Takahashi, as well as the vibrant color palette that suffuses Toronto’s production design by Rona Liu. It’s near literally rose-colored in terms of the lush brightness, which leads nicer contrast to the darker climactic scenes or the ethereal, wistful beauty of the ritual. The snappy character acting is also a huge boon, with wild, funny expressions and exaggerated visual effects reminiscent of the aforementioned influences, but also wonderfully subtle touches like Ming’s building anger at a crucial moment. It really shows how Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was marvelously innovative and paved a way for different kinds of styles in CGI feature filmmaking, fond as I am of the Disney/Pixar house styles and melding of cartoon principles with photorealism (I’m really excited to see Lightyear next month). It’s been a good year already between this and the equally stylish DreamWorks outing The Bad Guys.
Sonically, the film is marvelously on point as well. Ludwig Göransson puts another feather in his cap as one of the most unique composers working today for the score as he blends traditional Chinese instruments with old-school hiphop stylings. This complements the 4*Town songs composed by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell well, which are themselves dead-on affectionate parodies of your typical Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, etc. ditties. On the voice acting end, Chieng, initially only hired as a temp voice, makes a remarkable feature debut for what is a pretty difficult role. She takes Mei on a genuine emotional journey while being winning and sympathetic; Pixar’s always been pretty good with kid performers, but Chieng is easily one of their best finds. And while the supporting cast is all excellent (in particular, Park nearly runs away with the film via her passionate line reads, and the always welcome James Hong has a small but pivotal role in the climax), Sandra Oh is the clear co-anchor of the proceedings. She’s always been good at voice acting (notably as Glimmer’s cheery aunt Castaspella on She-Ra and a far more domineering mother figure in last year’s Raya and the Last Dragon), but this is easily her crowning achievement in that field. Like Mei, Ming is a very difficult role to pull off. Too harsh, and she could be outright unlikable; too soft, and the climactic twist doesn’t have the impact. But Oh rises to the challenge with aplomb, managing to be by turns sympathetic, authoritative, funny (the whiplash from sniffing at the first glimmers of Mei’s rebellion to panicking at her own mother calling is terrific), and breaks your heart by the end. A particularly brilliant touch is when we see a younger Ming in the ritual’s mindspace, it’s not a younger actress doing the dialogue, but Oh. This shows just how deeply rooted her trauma is and how she’s stayed stuck in this moment since.
It’s possible I sound a little TOO effusive and performative, being a white guy reviewing this, and members of that particular classification have, shall we say, fucked up majorly in terms of analyzing this film that doesn’t put a fears-of-adulthood metaphor on toys, cars, or fish. To say the least of an infamous YouTuber’s comment that the film should have dealt with then-current events that have nothing to do whatsoever with the plot or themes (seriously, what the actual fuck). But even beyond the unique perspective and setting, this genuinely knocked my socks off. Shi shows a command of direction here and view of adolescence that’s honestly equal to another Pixar favorite’s debut, Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant. It’s not every 32 year-old who can get promoted to vice president of creative after one short and one feature. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

SYNOPSIS: Claire Beauchamp, Section One operative makes her way to Hong Kong as profiled on her PDA mission profile.
CHAPTER 4
Once off the plane at Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong’s futuristic and ultra-efficient International Airport, Claire Beauchamp checked through Immigration and went in search of the correct carousel to reclaim her luggage. As she waited with all the other tired and anxious passengers, Claire fleetingly looked around at the many faces of fellow passengers. There were people going about their business, and excited tourists commencing their holidays pushed forward to claim their belongings when they made an appearance on the carousel. Finally collecting her baggage Claire made her way toward Customs like all the other disembarking passengers. The officious uniformed Immigration officials sat at ridiculously high desks blocking their faces below eye level. It seemed that all were wearing wire-framed glasses, were very serious and never offered the hint of a smile. Standing in the queue Claire slowly moved forward until it was her turn to approach the desk. Glancing at her passport the official asked, “Are you in Hong Kong for business or pleasure?” Business … unfortunately. Pleasure … if I’m lucky.  Actually … I’m in Hong Kong on a mission … a very dangerous undercover mission for Section One ... the world’s most clandestine anti terrorist organisation. Ever heard of it? ... No? ... Well we’re after the elusive leader of the Rising Dragons. Do you know him? ... Sun Yee Lok? ... Ring any bells? Obviously suffering from some jet lag, Claire’s mind went off on this flippant tangent before she answered the waiting Custom’s official. “I’m on holiday,” she replied casting a mega watt smile in the official’s direction. He casually glanced her way, having heard the same reply thousands of time and methodically stamped Claire’s passport with the patented response. “Enjoy your stay in Hong Kong.” “Thank you,” she replied and took her passport from the counter. Claire once again collected her belongings and made her way to the Arrivals hall. Ever watchful for anything suspicious she casually glanced around her surroundings. It was a bustling area divided into two distinct areas. Big plasma TV panels installed in both allowed waiting meeters and greeters to see arriving passengers as they entered either area. Miniature gardens added a green touch to both ends of the hall as well. But it was the aromatic smells of food readily available that tempted Claire’s taste buds. Realising how very hungry she was, she couldn’t remember the last time she had eaten having left Section One immediately after the briefing. Claire’s stomach let her know it was probably hours since any food had passed her mouth and she was sorely tempted to sample some of the superb selection of fare at food outlets catering to all kinds of cuisine. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ The airport was beautiful, modern and quite easy to manoeuvre around. Claire next proceeded into the waiting area of the Meeting Point located at the centre of the Arrivals hall. It was a clearly marked area to meet and greet passengers upon arrival. There was a bustle of people milling around waiting for friends and family as was common at all international and domestic airports. Scanning the area, Claire made her way towards a colourful sculpture given to the Hong Kong SAR Government by Chongqing City to celebrate the reunification of the territory with its motherland China that was placed near the exit. Arriving in Hong Kong was like stepping into a whirling mass of humanity with a dynamism that was unforgettable. The atmosphere was electric and Claire felt the excitement of this exotic city wash over her. If only this was anything but a mission, she would definitely be in a different frame of mind. Many eyes focused on the beautiful, tall, brunette woman who stood out from the crowd no doubt wondering whom she may be meeting, but people looked away just as quickly when her eyes connected with theirs. However, unbeknownst to Claire, one pair of eyes watched her surreptitiously. He smiled to himself before flipping open his cell phone to make a call. Merging with the cosmopolitan crowd Claire Beauchamp walked further along the exit where a stream of Chinese messengers awaited the disembarking passengers. Patient operators held up placards with the names of many different hotels, while tour guides rushed around. All were wearing white shirts and dark pants which seemed a mandatory uniform coupled with quite a few looking like the Customs officials who wore wire rimmed glasses below their dark hair. They were checking lists with the names of passengers waiting to be escorted to their respective hotels and babbling quickly in Chinese. Looking around Claire couldn’t help but notice one person who stood out distinctly from the others. The man was wearing a colourful Hawaiian shirt and was holding up an iPad bearing her name. Picking up her baggage, she made her way over to him.
“Hi … I’m Claire Beauchamp,” she said smiling at him.
“Ah, Miss Beauchamp … Welcome to Hong Kong. I hope you had a pleasant flight from Sydney.”
“Yes, I did thank you.”
My name is Angus Mhor from the Hong Kong Police,” he said showing her his identification badge before placing it back in his pocket. “Here let me take your luggage. Accommodation has been arranged for you in a lovely apartment overlooking Victoria Harbour.” “How lovely. Thank-you.” “I’m afraid it is not as beautiful as the view of your Sydney Harbour but it is beautiful nonetheless.” “I’m sure it will be fine.” “My superior, Senior Superintendent Zheng is expecting you, and once you are settled in he is looking forward to meeting you at Police Headquarters later today.”
“Thank you Mr. Mhor, I’ll look forward to meeting with him as well.”
Meanwhile ... at Hong Kong Police Headquarters
Senior Superintendent Xiao Zheng sat huddled over the mounting pile of cases on his desk. All the latest ones seemed to point to some connection between the Rising Dragons triad and the victims. For some time his department had been investigating these connections in line with the rise in kidnappings and murders that had taken palace in Hong Kong over the last couple of months. However, he was at his wits end trying to piece together all the evidence building on this notorious triad’s members and its elusive leader Sun Yee Lok. This was precisely why he had called in outside help because he needed someone with a covert background who could be placed undercover on this case. He looked at the photo kit picture of Claire Beauchamp from the Australian Federal Bureau of Police. She had volunteered to be part of an exchange program with the Hong Kong Police. Claire was a beautiful young woman, a “looker” if ever he saw one. Pity he was happily married, he smiled to himself. It was hard to believe that a woman with her looks was so lethal, but she came with excellent credentials from her superiors. Claire Beauchamp was not only a stunning woman she was deadly accurate too. He was very impressed with her résumé as he read information about her last covert work in Parramatta and Redfern. It seemed that Miss Beauchamp had undergone a National Undercover Operatives’ Training Program in Australia, passing with flying colours. She had excelled in all areas as well as personal defence, martial arts, assessment and competency skills. Zheng was most pleased that he had been able to snare her for a short time in Hong Kong to work on this specific case. He knew that Claire would be an invaluable asset to the police given her forte was undercover work. Perhaps she would be better suited to the OCTB, Hong Kong's Organized Crime and Triad Bureau, but she could transfer there for an extended stint if need be … once this case was closed. Zheng knew that his counterpart at OCTB Detective Jiang Ng, could use her services, but he never really trusted the man. There was something about him that made his hackles rise but he couldn’t put his finger on the pulse of his uncertainty. Perhaps it was because the man was so overconfident and arrogant? What he did know for certain was he didn’t like him and that was that. Nevertheless, he was grateful for Claire Beauchamp’s expertise and that could prove to be quite useful in helping to discover the perpetrator of the recent deaths on the junk. Angus Mhor had radioed him to say that Miss Beauchamp had arrived and they were on the way to her apartment on Hong Kong Island. “Mei Ling!” Zheng bellowed at his new recruit. She came running over to his desk. “Yes Sir?” “Bring me the file on this afternoon’s murder of Mr. Wu and the woman …” “Yes Sir,” she replied obediently. However, before she could leave to do his bidding he issued another order. “… and bring me a cup of coffee. I think this is going to be a long night.” “Yes … Sir.” Mei left as quickly as she had arrived at his desk thinking that her new boss was as hardnosed as she had been told. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Claire followed Angus Mhor to the Ground Transportation Centre where he had left his car. There she saw a highly efficient and comprehensive transportation network connected to the passenger terminal. Airport express trains and an extensive public transport interchange with facilities for taxis, franchised buses, tour coaches; hotel limousines and private cars were to be found on the multi-levelled structure. Taking Claire’s luggage from the baggage trolley he placed it in the trunk of the car. Making small conversation as a way of "breaking the ice" between them as they got into the vehicle Angus said, “Pity we don’t fly into Kai Tak Airport anymore.” “Why’s that?” Claire asked interestingly. “There was an element of danger involved in its spectacular urban landing approach which was much more thrilling and beautiful than our new modernized airport.” “It sounds exciting.” “Oh … yes it was.” Angus sighed pensively, remembering the many times he had returned home from overseas assignments. “During the last few seconds of landing you were actually flying between high-rise buildings that were very close on both sides and higher than the aeroplane.” “Wow! That would have been amazing.” “The old airport had spectacular views of the city when landing and taking off. Pity things have to change, don’t you think Miss Beauchamp?” “Sometimes the more things change the more they stay the same,” she added thoughtfully. Settling in the driver’s seat, Angus gave Claire a wink in the rear vision mirror. “It’s quite a distance to downtown Hong Kong and will take us about an hour. I guess it's the price you pay for modernization.” Having said that Angus then turned on the ignition, pumped the accelerator and sped off in the direction of Lantau Island.

Nian Gao The pronunciation of Nian Gao sounds like 'year high' (年高). It symbolises higher income, higher position, children growing up - all the aspirations and promise of a better & prosperous (new) year. In the Wu Empire, Prime Minister Wu Zixu (伍子胥) warned his people about impending war and advised his subjects to dig and build a wall underground with ”bricks” made from glutinous rice flour, what is now believed to be the original Nian Gao. The ”bricks” saved many from starvation. Nian Gao is made every year to commemorate this event and became known as the Chinese New Year Cake. Lau Pan Niang Daphne @ipoh_malaysian_cuisine invited Uncle for a pre-Chinese New Year Lunch and gave him a Nian Gao. He’s chuffed by being given this cake because of all the good connotations associated with the coming Chinese New Year (of the Rat). We had the Otak Otak (Spicy Fish Paste) to start lunch followed by a top notch Char Kway Teow with the rice noodles smoldering with wok hei. Daphne recommends the Sweet & Sour Chicken, new on the menu and it’s fabulous, sweet, sour and crunchy, all at once. We are all gearing up for Chinese New Year. Ipoh Malaysian Cuisine will have Yee Sang (Prosperity Toss); it will be the perfect restaurant to celebrate Sar Chap Mei or the 15 days of New Year. Gōng Xǐ Fā Cái 恭喜发财 #niangao #otakotak #charkwayteow #sweetandsourchicken #chinesenewyear2020 #yearoftherat2020 #gongxifacai2020㊗️ (at Ipoh Malaysian Cuisine, 598 Remuera Road, Remuera) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7abJcAJKwd/?igshid=1iva6d64ishji
