Meiji Restoration-themed otome visual novel Meiji Katsugeki Haikara Ryuuseigumi: Seibai Shimaseu, Yonaoshi Kagyou will launch for Switch on September 24 in Japan for 6,500 yen, publisher Idea Factory announced.

A limited edition including a special booklet, soundtrack CD, and original drama CD will also be available for 8,500 yen.

there was a discussion on r/visualnovels abt vn cover art and i find it fascinating

bc most of them are undoubtedly kinda bad. like to me cover art is really important bc if i don’t like it i’ll either just quit the page without looking at anything else or i’ll have to think about adding it to my list twice, even if i like everything else about it. 

but the question is what counts as a ‘good’ cover. most people on r/visualnovels seem to like the highly-stylized or the more action-y ones, ones that look badass for more plot-focused vns, and the ones that have some ‘personality’ to them for romance-focused ones. 

but personally i just like the ones that look good. like fsn and fha’s covers aren’t really revolutionary in any way  i guess but they do show the relevant characters and the art styles and fha’s in particular shows that there’s a tone difference compared to fsn. but as far as type-moon goes mahoyo is the best because IT’S FUCKING BEAUTIFUL even if i wish the title was more eye-catching

i can’t really say what makes me like a cover because there’s all sorts of ways to make them interesting, but i do know what i tend to dislike

1. i don’t know what this is called but the cover of ‘hoshi ori yume mirai’. every time i look at it i want to exit the window and delete the entire concept of this vn from my brain. even though it is a quite popular vn that doesn’t seem to have any other elements that would put me off, that cover is just. the worst. there’s a way to make 6 love interests look appealing but making them stand next to each other with the dumbest facial expressions is not it

2. a cover that has a completely different style and overall feel to it than the vn itself. of course the actual overall tone of the vn is impossible to get from just the screenshots on vndb, but the cover’s artstyle and colour combination should reflect the vn’s. like i every time i end up on desert kingdom’s vndb page i think to myself ‘i need to read this asap’ but then i look at the screenshots and die inside. looking at them side-by-side it doesn’t even seem like they’re trying to reflect the same story. 

and as far as otome games go, the ones that show one or two love interests at most seem to be the most aesthetically pleasing, but i don’t particularly like that because i need to know who i’m playing this game for, and even if shinigami to shoujo’s cover is very beautiful and has a great atmosphere, i feel disappointed every time i remember that it has multiple love interests. something similar goes on with kannou mukashibanashi portable’s cover which makes it feel like a bl game with 2 LIs but it is in fact an otoge with hecking 8 LIs. ??????

interestingly enough probably my favourite otome game cover i’ve come across so far is probably piofiore no banshou’s because, even if it does have the very typical ‘floaty-mc-surrounded-by-LIs’ composition, it is visually captivating, the character’s positioning and their facial expressions give an idea of their personalities, and it does perfectly capture the vns artstyle. having the mc on the cover at all is always a plus as well. and i tend to like the ones for historical otoges, especially if they have interesting character designs and dark colour combinations, so something like ken ga kimi or meiji katsugeki haikara ryuuseigumi.

also anything to do with satoi is fucking great because the character designs alone make up for anything else that might be less than perfect. and some of them such as olympia soiree and un:birtday song’s are just great in every way.
