A trip to Mekong Delta is a common feature in a Vietnamese itinerary. We ended up doing a day trip. The whole setup of the day tour is a really well oiled machinery here, well suited for travellers. You get to experience the various aspects of life in a delta. We got picked up early in the morning along with guests from other hotels. Our guide tried to build a rapport with everyone with some well practiced jokes and lines. Soon we reached a jetty where we were supposed to take a boat to a village deep inside the delta. We crossed a very fascinating wet market and made our way to the boat. We started our short journey to this village and along the way bought tender coconuts and pineapple from vendors on other boats. As we reached the edge of the village we took smaller boats and started moving towards the village through narrow canals. Once we reached the village area there were lots of activities lined up for us ranging from seeing honey bee farming, making of rice papers, making of puffed rice to trying our hands at making a local delicacy. We also tasted some rice wine which was stored inside a jar filled with scorpions and snakes. It also had a whole crow inside. It actually tasted clean. We had a nice lunch too. A small song in dance performance by the villagers was also thrown in. We took a small bicycle ride around the village. To our surprise, we saw some desi saas bahu serial playing in a house. The saas bahu drama does transcends international boundaries and cultures. While we had a decent time, the whole setup was very touristy. We got some good insight into the lives of the people here, however at the same time every thing was pretty tacky. It seemed more like a show than an actual experience. We came back around late evening.
