Gaetano Pesce (8 November 1939 – 3 April 2024)

Moving against the stream of rational, functional modernism in the 1960s and early 70s, Mr. Pesce experimented with materials and production methods to create furniture pieces imbued with political or religious meaning for brands from Cassina to B&B Italia.

Many would go on to become icons of Italian design including the Up5 chair – an innovative vacuum-packed chair designed to resemble a female prisoner – which he designed for B&B Italia precursor C&B.

Pesce moved to New York in 1983 and began to move away from mass production to create "standardised series" in everyday materials like resin, adapting conventional production techniques to create varied and imperfect outcomes.

The result are pieces such as the 1884 Pratt chair, which toe the line between functional design and decorative art, helping to create a new category that would later become collectible design.

Mr. Pesce was born in the Italian city of La Spezia in November 1939, only two months after the start of world war two.

As was common at the time, he trained in both architecture and design, studying first at the University of Venice and later at the Venice Institute of Industrial Design.

Among his architecture projects is the Organic Building in Osaka from 1993, with its plant-covered facade made of orange fiberglass that served as a precursor to today's vegetation-covered green walls.

But Mr. Pesce's most pioneering and well-known work happened in the world of design. In the late 1960s, he became one of the leaders of Italy's Radical Design movement, rejecting modernism's rigid focus on forms dictated by function.

Instead, Pesce focused on the idea that functional objects, much like art, could carry a deeper message.

One of the most famous examples is the controversial Up5 chair from 1969, which manufacturer B&B Italia describes as "the first product of Italian design with a political meaning".

Unique 'Ireland' table, Made of polyurethane and metal. The table was made and exhibited in 1996 by Gallery Mourmans, Knokke-Zoute, Belgium. It was part of a series of 'EU tables', where all 15 member countries were represented as a table, in this case Ireland. Milano: Le mostre e gli eventi di Triennale per la Milano Design Week. In occasione della Milano Design Week, Triennale Milano apre al pubblico una serie di nuove mostre e progetti, rinnovando così la sua vocazione di istituzione di riferimento per il design e l'architettura a livello internazionale e presentando i progetti di alcune delle più interessanti realtà nel campo della progettazione. Il pubblico della Milano Design Week avrà la possibilità di visitare il Museo del Design Italiano, diretto da Marco Sammicheli, che presenta una nuova selezione di oggetti e un nuovo allestimento progettato da Paolo Giacomazzi Design Studio. Il percorso espositivo ripercorre i cento anni della storia di Triennale con una selezione di iconici oggetti di design a partire dal 1923 fino ai giorni nostri. Il nuovo allestimento ospita un’ulteriore novità: la Design Platfom, uno spazio destinato ad accogliere mostre temporanee con un focus sul design di oggi. La prima esposizione è Text (fino al 17 settembre 2023, a cura di Marco Sammicheli), che racconta il comune atteggiamento di stilisti e designer di fronte alla progettazione del testo, delle interfacce e dei tessuti. Triennale presenta inoltre la mostra Droog30. Design or Non-design? (fino al 23 aprile), coprodotta con Nieuwe Instituut di Rotterdam e a cura di Maria Cristina Didero e Richard Hutten, che celebra l’attività dell’innovativo gruppo di design olandese a 30 anni dalla sua prima esposizione milanese per il Fuorisalone del 1993, e la mostra Lisa Ponti. Disegni e voci (fino al 7 maggio), a cura di Damiano Gullì e Salvatore Licitra, che presenta una selezione di opere dell’artista, editor, critica e scrittrice che ha fatto del disegno su fogli formato A4 il suo mezzo espressivo di elezione. Ad accogliere i visitatori all’esterno di Triennale, è l’opera Falena di Nico Vascellari, un'installazione composta da falci placcate d’oro che evoca dei grandi e luminosi raggi solari. In apertura della Milano Design Week, Triennale presenta una speciale installazione per omaggiare il designer e artista brasiliano Fernando Campana che, con suo fratello Humberto, ha dato vita a una delle più importanti realtà del nuovo design brasiliano. Inoltre, assieme al partner istituzionale Lavazza Group, con cui Triennale condivide l'approccio multidisciplinare alla ricerca nell’ambito delle arti visive e ai temi della sostenibilità, viene inaugurata l’opera Terra-cotta, Plastic Pots and Chai and Chinese Hibiscus di Lorenzo Vitturi. L’installazione, la terza proposta in collaborazione con Lavazza Group, è ospitata all’interno del Caffè Triennale e approfondisce il rapporto tra arte e sostenibilità, evidenziando l’importanza dello scambio tra culture geograficamente lontane. Dal 17 al 23 aprile, Triennale accoglie inoltre nei suoi spazi le ricerche di importanti istituzioni e aziende internazionali, offrendo un approfondimento su alcuni dei temi centrali del dibattito contemporaneo sul design, come il recupero di materiali e tecniche tradizionali o la rielaborazione delle icone del passato, attraverso le esposizioni OUR BAMBOO. Exploring Materials by Japan Creative, promossa da Japan Creative, Mother-of-Pearl Tables, proposta da Duson Gallery Seoul, e FUTURE73 VISIONS, installazione immersiva di intelligenza artificiale presentata da Timberland. La sostenibilità ambientale rimane un tema centrale nella proposta di questa Design Week, attraverso l’esposizione Made by Fire di Moravian Gallery in Brno, e affianca tematiche come la rilettura del lavoro del grande maestro Gaetano Pesce per Meritalia con l’esposizione EVERYTHING IS GONNA BE ALRIGHT, o la riscoperta di un patrimonio architettonico da valorizzare col progetto Tashkent Modernism. Triennale Milano Index di ACDF (Arts and Culture Development Foundation under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan). Il 18 aprile, dalle ore 18.30, il giardino di Triennale Milano si anima con Another Tuesday Design Party, la serata con dj set in collaborazione con Le Cannibale, con performance di Luwei e Luce Clandestina. Il 20 aprile alla Aerostazione di Milano Linate inaugura la mostra Triennale Milano 1923 – 2023 (fino a dicembre 2023). Curata da Marco Sammicheli, Direttore del Museo del Design Italiano, è la quarta esposizione organizzata dall’istituzione negli spazi di Linate e costituisce un racconto in pillole sui cento anni di Triennale, ripercorrendo anche la storia delle ventitré edizioni delle sue Esposizioni Internazionali. La proposta di Triennale per la Milano Design Week è anche accompagnata da uno speciale public program dedicato ai protagonisti del mondo della progettazione con incontri, lecture e talk. Tra gli altri, Preserving Modernism. A conversation with Gayane Umerova, Rem Koolhaas and Jean-Louis Cohen (19 aprile, ore 13.30), una conversazione tra gli architetti di fama internazionale e i membri del progetto Tashkent. Modernism XX/XXI, nell’ambito della mostra Tashkent Modernism. Index, e il talk con i curatori e gli artisti della mostra Droog30. Rimangono aperte al pubblico la retrospettiva Angelo Mangiarotti. Quando le strutture prendono forma (fino al 23 aprile) e l’allestimento permanente di Casa Lana di Ettore Sottsass, con la mostra Ettore Sottsass. La Parola (fino a settembre 2023), così come l’esposizione Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori (fino al 14 maggio), presentata nell’ambito del partenariato con Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain.
