An adventure game’s inventory, inspired by prokopetz’s writing prompt. @meso-mijali‘s items. Send me five items near your, and I’ll write you backpack adventurer’s inventory later today!
A box of farina - A cheap and easy breakfast for those cold mornings. It's not just for depression era breakfasts anymore! A tea mug and strainer - A ceramic mug and tea leaf strainer. They're empty. How disappointing... A jar of peanut butter - A partially used jar of peanut butter, the true lunch of sticky six year olds everywhere! Pot holders - Look, your hands are squares! A chef’s knife - A large knife great for cutting large vegetables or meat or anything else if you’re too lazy to get another knife. When was the last time you had this thing sharpened?
>USE a box of farina ON a tea mug and strainer.
You pour the farina into the mug. Some gets caught in the strainer. Some does not. You now have a mug full of fortified wheat powder, enjoy.
>USE a box of farina ON a jar of peanut butter.
You’re going to need a recipe before you start mixing ingredients like a mad man.
>USE a box of farina ON pot holders.
You tenderly lift the box of farina with the pot holders. You then remember that it’s a cardboard box that’s comfortably at room temperature, and sheepishly take the pot holders off your hands.
>USE a box of farina ON a chef’s knife.
If you stab that box you’ll just wind up with wheat meal everywhere and then the rest of this game will be wasted tidying up. You don’t want that, do you? You wouldn’t waste this video game’s designer sweat, blood, and tears on the impuslive need to shove a digital knife into every item in your inventor, WOULD YOU? No, so put it down.
>USE a tea mug and strainer ON a jar of peanut butter.
The strainer does its job and contains the peanut butter, a look I hope you like because it will probably never fully come out of all those little holes.
>USE a tea mug and strainer ON pot holders.
The tea mug is tragically empty and doesn’t currently need the cozy, padded protection of the pot holders to pick up!
>USE a tea mug and strainer ON a chef’s knife.
No matter how much you threaten it, the mug does not refill itself. Tragic.
>USE a jar of peanut butter ON pot holders.
You cradle the jar of peanut butter like a baseball in a catcher’s mitt. You briefly imagine the roar of the crowds, the crack of bats, the smell of corndogs, then you stop being silly and take the holders off.
>USE a jar of peanut butter ON a chef's knife
Ruthlessly you jam the chef's knife into the partially filled jar of peanut butter. It would be more upsetting, if the peanut butter wasn't already completely accustom to being stabbed, albeit by smaller knives. You now have a peanut butter covered chef’s knife.
(A peanut butter covered chef’s knife - Ready to make a sandwich or terrorize weaklings with nut allergies.)
>USE pot holders ON a chef's knife
Pot holders, on! Chef’s knife, out! You look like a Great Chef, all that’s missing is the toque blanche and you’re ready to Cook!

Character profile: Meso
Meso is a small beastformer, somewhere around minibot size, whose alt is a hare.
In root mode, he’s relatively average build, but slimmer through the torso than most. He has fur down much of his back, and in some areas on his flanks, thighs, shoulders, and a bit over the top of his helm. Cute lil white triangle on his forehelm. And ears! He has long bunny ears that fold up and tuck under the plating on his helm if they need to hide, but mostly he keeps them up and lifted to listen. They have a soft fuzz along the backs, and he twitches his legs real nicely if you scritch behind his ears. He also has long whiskers and wide, round optics. Basically, if one doesn’t mind beastformers, he’s cute as heck.
His alt mode is a bit chubbier. His legs are fairly long and digitigrade, but slide down over themselves, the thighs telescoping a bit shorter, into alt mode. He walks a bit funky in root mode due to having bunny legs, and is incapable of walking on two legs in alt. Instead, he hops, moving on all fours on servos that transform into paws to protect his fingertips. That fur comes into play here- it’s rooted in thick, tough skin over some of his plating, and breaks up his silhouette a bit. Bots trying to spot another bot in the shadows don’t look for long ears and fur. He’s a bit faceless in alt, too- a visor kinda like a cross between Soundwave’s visor and one of those newer style gas masks folds down over his face, giving him a rabbit-head shape, whiskers peeking out of slits in its sides. He can retract his whiskers and close the slits if he needs to be absolutely as streamlined as possible.
And he has a tail! A puffball tail made of fiber-optic lights, with lights around his lower haunches. If something tries to chase him, he can activate the lights in a blinding flash, giving him just enough time to dart out one way or the other or down a hole while his pursuer is blinded. All it takes is that one instant, and he can dive away.
You know that quote from Watership Down? “All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed."
That’s Meso. Smoke bombs, sticky traps, tripwires, but mostly just his speed and that tail-flash trick. And Meso has never, never had someone catch him. He’s been trapped a few times, he’s been cornered, but he has never had a person catch up to and catch him. He’s a bit twitchy about things flying overhead, though.
And he’s VERY twitchy about being caught. He’s had a couple of people get clever and set snares for him after he caused trouble, and laser-hardlight-reinforced wires will work if you chase him enough to get him going too fast to spot it properly. If he gets a snare around a leg at full speed, he will hit the ground hard, and he will panic. If he knows there’s danger, if he knows someone will be coming to get him, he panics beyond all reason and will hurt himself trying to escape. Little guy’s a spook! He can’t afford to get caught.
If you spook him, or if he gets excited, he drums his hindlegs hard before running away. If given the chance, he’ll happily do a bit of a hopping dance on top of a steel drum or anything else that makes good noises.
Most of his job is to scout, and to carry hard-copy messages. Little bit of spying here and there, little bit of opportunistic sabotage. He’s a clever little opportunist who takes advantage of anything and everything he can get ahold of, and is hard to keep ahold of if you somehow manage to obtain him. Lil guy kicks like a horse! And he will bite you if you make him.
He comes with buck teeth, which keep growing, and he likes to gnaw. He may or may not gnaw at random objects if they happen to be offered. They’re not half bad for sabotage, either. Duck under computer consoles, strip the insulation real quick off a few wires, nudge them together, and run away while they short out.
If you want him to like you, rub behind his ears, let him perch on you, and give him crunchy treats. If you’re big enough, let him sling a hammock on you. Meso loves him some vantage points, and big bots make great vantage points.
He’s fairly sweet, but he’s a mischief boi. You can tell when he’s pondering mischief, too. His ears go up high and start quivering, his whiskers perk, and he does the :3c face at everybody.
(oh, and he hasn’t quite figured it out yet, but he’s got a pretty major kink for being pinned and held still by a partner so they can grind on him. He likes being teased by a partner who’s showing him what he’s about to get)

beyond-far-horizons
more-oc-questions: Which OC claims they’re tough...
OOOH Sindra and Aquila come close? That is so cool or rather warm given the trope.
YESS. This is literally the central theme and the heart of the story...
Among Aquila’s main relationships Sindra is the most substantial because its at the heart of the story and conflict and its resolution means a change in the world itself (think Madara and Hashirama and the clan conflict in Naruto).
They are the ‘lead characters’ of the main sides of the story and they’re at the center of this and eventually they reach for each other.
Hence the opposite color scheme, theme, personality, etc.. i.e. Aquila is warm and somewhat careless, Sindra is cold and strict, etc... they have a lot to gain from each other and evolve together.
They’re supposed to be the friends to enemies to friends trope we all love so much, plus red oni/blue oni, fire/ice, light/darkness, chaos/order, etc...
Tumblr media
Of course, as years pass by I have created many other important relationship for these two characters, but they were sort of the initial spark and still central to the theme. In fact, Aquila is much older in my head, but she was supposed to have a frienemy from the start and that took the shape of Sindra... so they’re both old AF (at least 14 years old as I've started drawing the outlines during school).
The story was initially just birds vs dragons and very simple, but now I added a third element in the form of humans and its becoming more complicated. Still, basically in the initial we have both axis like this...
Aquila has more or less...
1: Her own phoenix related issues to work with (what means to be a phoenix, dealing with the deity, etc..),
2: Her parents stuff (her father’s disappearance and her mother’s sorrow), Aquila goes on an Horus-like quest to find her dad (they mirror the Egyptian family of deities quite perfectly as in, Aquila: Horus, Damaris: Isis and Suzaku: Osiris/Ra, from there on you guess...
3: Her own quest understanding her ancestor, the Raven Queen and uncovering ancient avian secrets (which eventually leads her to Eltanin and draconians)...
4: Aquila & Altair’s quest involving the true nature of flight (a self discovery quest which messes up with the avian’s own nature, etc.. which will lead eventually to the origin of avians and their ancestors) and also to...
5: The transformation of the avian society and her relationship with the other phoenixes,
6: Her personal quest is one of gaining freedom initially and them sharing it with the world, she’s a catalyst of change. Aquila starts the story as a very naive and even childish person due to her complicated childhood (she basically died and duh) she was kept on a ‘golden cage’ for a long time after becoming a phoenix... because she was in great danger. After she goes out of it we have the start of her arc of self discovery and traveling around the world uncovering its secrets, basically.
Sindra has more or less...
1: Her own issues about being a draconian and her dragon ancestors (Polaris & Ishanur and how she relate to them and her evolving relationship with them, what influences they have on her, etc...), basically Sindra feels conflicted about her nature and rejects her human side due to dragon slayers having killed her parents which leads to... she needs to build a balance and understand it all,
2: Her revenge quest for said parents. They were friends with Aquila’s parents and trying t build a bridge to peace between all races, and they were murdered due to it... so here is a point they get close (Aquila & Sindra, early on)
3: Her sister Nix which she is very protective about, basically she need to learn how to deal with this all and also Nix leads to the next one:
4: Her issues with the human kingdom of Novencia enhances after Nix gets enamored with Procyon,
5: Lyra and the dragonslayers (they want to kill each other) lmao, basically her primary antagonists early on,
6: And least but one of the more important: her relationship with her aunt, Kigaly which is due to explode as soon as she finds out she had a hand on her parents demise....
This is my fault I haven’t given any sensible way for people to guess what the story is about. In fact, I have avoided some central subjects and branched out to more and more concepts, etc... I need to sit down and write what this is all about but I don’t know if I’ll live long enough, at this rate (lmao)
Anyway, this is just the very beginning and the premises I want to work about for these two, but they meet somewhere in the middle. Also, many characters such as Eltanin were designed to have ties to both of them:
1: Eltanin, the main antagonist... loved Raven (Gienah), which was Aquila’s most infamous ancestor (due to being perceived as a traitor by her kind since she joined the draconians eventually and whose story parallels Aquila in her struggles with the phoenix deity and her desire to change the avian society, etc...)
Eltanin is an ancestral figure to Sindra and supposed to be like Madara is to Sasuke (a shadow both in the past and future of their kin). Sindra follow his footsteps somewhat and almost falls to the same themes, so they are mirrored also by their relationship with the dragon Ishanur (a fatherly figure to both of them).
Sindra later on joins Aquila in order to stop him, etc..
2: Kigaly mainly serves as an antagonist for most part of the story as she behaves quite madly and puts everything in danger in order to get her heart’s desire... her story ties closely to Sindra as I mentioned, they have a lot of beef to solve, etc.. but Kigaly also is interested in the phoenix power since she perceives it as a chance to bring her beloved sister back from the dead, so she is destined to be an antagonist to both Aquila and Sindra and this can grow more personal later on.
3: Aquila and Sindra are supposed to join forces later on and travel a bit together on a quest they eventually wind up on a place called Gaea, which is basically a forest with meso/south america theme where they meet an ancient culture which has potential to teach them their kinds can evolve together, etc... among other things they have to work this out.
4: Later on Sindra deals with Erebus, which is the dark parallel of Aithnë (the fire spirit) so they both have mirrored themes in having to deal with dangerous and complicated other-worldly beings, etc... (lulz).
By the end of the story they’ll be great friends and much more than that, soul mates in a way... and they’re supposed to lift each other and complement each other, etc... initially it might appear impossible and that’s exactly the premise of the story. Aquila opens up sooner as she noticed Sindra’s inner turmoil and despair as a silent scream for help... (she’s very perceptive and empathetic), but it takes a while for Sindra to accept any help from the outside, but eventually she does... she will have to rethink her life as she starts defrosting and focusing on what really matters, so eventually she repays the kindness in due and both are supposed to grow and evolve becoming much better than their initial versions, while keeping the structure and theme.
I hope I haven’t forgotten any important aspects of the story, LMAO. I’m quite sleepy right now but wanted to write you this quick guide to their relationship...
To sum it up, Aquila & Sindra are destined to some big things, they are the opposite forces that need to work together to make the world better, etc.. they are the central focus of the whole ‘bird vs dragon’ thing, of course I have many other characters which have become perhaps just as vital but they were the root of this all in my mind and everything has branched from it.
They’ll clash a lot before that, and there’s a reason it looks like they’re not very connected. A: I’m dumb and don’t write down things and B: you always see the base characters on my posts as I’m developing this...
And yes, I love the theme and I agree its rather warm, lol. But I have to make sure not only Aquila takes action on it, lol as she’s more prone to it.

What Is Mesotherapy and Can It Improve My Skin ? Benefits & Review
Mesotherapy is a French rejuvenation technique that uses micro injections of vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants, and plant extracts to rejuvenate and tighten skin, improve hair quality, as well as remove excess fat. Michel Pistor, a doctor in France, developed the technique in 1952. “ I had a cocktail of vitamins and antioxidants injected into my face in my quest for glowing skin and it actually worked – my skin feels hydrated, healthy and radiant !” Sarah, London Mesotherapy – Natural Vegan Solution For Skin Glow With a growing number of people turning to homeopathic and natural plant extract based medications to improve their health and wellbeing, it makes sense that beauty should be enhanced using plant and vitamin formulas. Mesotherapy gives you the reassurance and peace of mind that only a natural potent of liquid is penetrating your skin to rejuvenate it. What Are The Benefits of Mesotherapy? Mesotherapy can instantly improve dull, tired looking skin and superficial wrinkles but can also help to improve sluggish blood circulation, aiding the body to flush out ageing toxins. This treatment can also be used to address hyperpigmentation, treat acne and ‘lit-from-within’ skin glow. Mesotherapy vitamin cocktails  can stimulate the fibroblast cell in the skin to produce more collagen to combat the signs of ageing. Amongst the list of skin-friendly plant ingredients injected are vitamins, growth factors, Hyaluronic acid, peptides, antioxidants and trace elements that provide the ideal environment for healthy skin that copes with the ageing process better. A typical mesotherapy cocktail might generally contain over active 50 ingredients to nourish, repair and rejuvenate skin. It’s definitely worth doing if you have an event that you want a quick-fix for, and can be combined alongside anti -wrinkle injections and fillers. Is Mesotherapy painful ? A numbing cream is used and you’ll feel a tiny injection scratch on your skin –the treatment lasts about 20 min. What if I’m afraid of needles ? That’s absolutely fine. At Aesthetics Glow Clinic we can use cutting edge science Meso Pen or No Needle Meso beauty machine instead of needles. What’s the treatment used for ? Mesotherapy is used to improve body, hair, cellulite – different cocktails are applied to induce collagen production and create healthy looking skin and hair.

At DERMASORT Clinic we provide bespoke Mesotherapy treatments by combining  the best plant based ampules for lifting, glow, anti-aging, acne, scarring and rejuvenation. This skin booster actively repairs the skin to replace minerals that are deficient such as Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium and Calcium. Alongside this, there are also 24 amino acids that help produce elastin and collagen. To combat free radicals, there are 2 antioxidants to ensure your skin remains healthy and glowing. How to Do Lindsay Ellingson’s Skincare Routine
This article may contain affiliate links. See our Disclosure for more information.
"People might presume that since I'm a model, I have perfect skin, but I've always had skin issues," says Lindsay Ellingson.
Working as a runway and Victoria's Secret model in her 20s, she was constantly battling breakouts, thanks to a non-stop travel schedule and all the makeup being applied to her face. She also told The Cut and Erno Laszlo that she developed melasma, dark circles and hyperpigmentation.

Thanks for watching!
Those struggles inspired her to start researching the ingredients in her skincare products, and now, at 34, she's finally figured out what keeps her skin "glowing and balanced."
Although Lindsay's skin type is combination ("my T-zone gets a little bit oily"), she takes a decidedly gentle approach with her routine.
"The best advice that [dermatologists and estheticians] have given me is to stop stripping my skin," she told Spotlyte. "Just because your skin is broken out or oily doesn't mean you need to go at it with harsh cleansers and treatments."

Her favourites include an array of lightweight serums and hydrating masks, along with products from her own line, Wander Beauty, which she launched in 2015. (They're "infused with skin-loving ingredients... and free of parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances and mineral oils.")
Here's how Lindsay takes care of her skin, inside and out.

For right now... only $12 for the 20 ml bottle!! That's more than 50% off original price. Company is moving these to larger bottles... so you get the deal!! Mesolift or active Mesotherapy is today one of the most effective medical techniques in the field of revitalisation. It consists of micro-injections of a cocktail of vitamins, amino acids, trace elements, hyaluronic acid, plant extracts and minerals. This innovative and high-performance method has its limits, including the risk of hematomas due to the rupture of tiny blood vessels during injection, pain in sensitive areas (neck and décolleté), possible unsightly marks and finally the high cost of the treatment. The high-performance formula of MesoDerm uses Meso-Lift inspired innovations, adapted to a cream. Change how your skin looks, feels and behaves. This highly advanced proprietary Neuropeptide treatment activates surface renewal of the dermis to reveal visibly younger looking skin. It addresses loss of elasticity while re-energising and hydrating skin. It dramatically diminishes the appearance of deep lines and helps to reduce wrinkles and correct the signs of photo damage. MesoDerm Cream is formulated with a combination of the most powerful anti-ageing ingredients that nourish, repair and lift the appearance of skin, while delivering superior antioxidant protection.

Puppies, Participants and Patients: Thinking of care roles as choreographic tools
15, December 2016, Performing Care Symposium, Central School for Speech and Drama
Meg Stuart
In the video playing behind me I am carrying out an exercise with artist and friend Paul Hughes called ‘Use Me’ by choreographer Meg Stuart (Peeters 2010).
It’s an exercise that she has come back to many times in her process as a way to warm up dancers imaginations as well as their bodies and it’s been used to produce material for her work Splayed Mind for example.
In the exercise there’s at least three elements that work to produce the choreography of this duet
Firstly there are two distinct fixed roles - one passive and one active.
Secondly there are practical suggestions of what the active person could do. Stuart writes:
“Try different actions to find different relationships, stories, images. Put your head on their shoulder, imagining they are your lover. Tell a story in their ear. Work with memories of touch, like scratching, kissing or tickling. See them as an abstract shape. (...) lie on top of them (...) teach them how to move” and so on
The finally element and the most important to this presentation is that there are roles to try out, that relate to real-world, imaginary or impossible relationships. Stuart writes:
“Both partners identities shift as they stay in their fixed occupations of passive or active.” offering a list of roles that the participants can try including
Lover and Lover
Intruder and Hostage
Voyeur and Object
Vampire and a Familiar place
Protector and A fantasy
(…)
Guardian and Victim
(…)
Rescuer and Burden”
I am particularly interested in how the use of named roles can be considered in terms of care relationships. And what use these roles can have in developing care relationships.
Distinctions between a theatrical space and a non-theatrical space can be undone from at least two directions. From a sociological tradition Irving Goffman and others in the area of Dramaturgical sociology adopt frames from the theatre - things like roles, scenes and audiences to think about human relations generally. And from a choreographic tradition such as my own, expanded choreography extends the application of choreographic theory and practice beyond the theatrical setting to human and other relations more generally.
Of course care is only one way to read Stuart’s exercise and to do so ignores other things that it involves but the exercise is a starting point to think about how we can play with roles as a choreographic tool and how those roles can produce or reveal particular performances and aesthetics of care.
The roles in the exercise might involve drawing on existing understandings and recollections of caring relationships, for example if we are treat the passive person as we would a lover. And this is not just a representation of care because I know Paul is alive and aware of what is happening and so I am considering how exactly we are holding or moving or touching the other. With roles or actions that do not relate explicitly to typical caring relationships for example more abstract arrangements, there remains an underlying caring relationship of colleagues, friends and fellow humans and so I, the active partner, am taking into account how I touch or lift another - vulnerable - human being.
But there are other states, actions and images that the exercise call for that are less obviously about care.
[pause]
Intimate care
The ethics of care focuses on the moral consequences of attending to and meeting the needs of the particular others for whom we take responsibility. (Virginia Held)
What I am interested in about in Stuart’s exercise is intimate care which is ideally characterised by Tamara Metz in three ways.
One. It is unmonitored by the state or other outside parties
Two. It is not primarily involving a material transaction
Neither Paul or I were paid but he took part wanting to help me and out of an interest in my practice and ideas. Just as I am interested in his practices and ideas. And we have a kind of cautious but also very open friendship in development. But there is work to be done here to understand whether the context of a performance or practice or workshop remains intimate if there are material transactions. If I were to pay him or if an audience were to pay us to perform this. How do such situations test the meaning of intimate care.
So
One. It is unmonitored by the state or other outside parties
Two. It is not primarily involving a material transaction
Three. most importantly here intimate care is “characterised by deep, diverse, particular and non-contractual ‘terms’, ties and motivations”
Deep here means to the point of life sustaining. That they are diverse means they are material, emotional, physical and spiritual.
The particularities and diversities of intimate relationships are worked out in private in different ways verbally and non verbally; and as I have mentioned they are importantly not contractual - unlike the care of a nanny for a child for example.
Roles
Our intimate relationships may be named in broad terms for example friends, parent and child, uncle and niece, husband and wife, lover, companion etc. that end up being negotiated at a macro-sociological level. By this I mean that although the exact ways that each of these is constituted and practiced varies from case to case and from time to time, because they are words and made with language, there is some kind of working and contested understanding at a social level. For example we might think how husband has been expanded to include men in same sex unions; or how godparent can now refer to people with a non-religious interest in a child’s upbringing.
Or when people feel that a term like ‘husband’ cannot accommodate changing practices and arrangements or cannot be purged of their heterosexist, patriarchal origins, terms like partner and significant other are put into use as alternatives.
The development of these terms occurs case by case but the pace at which they might evolve at a social level is often slow and generational.
However different kinds of care roles can be invented and negotiated more quickly at the micro (face to face) or meso (group) level for example in professional, sub- or informal cultures.  As Metz puts it “protected from outside interference, [intimate caring] relationships can serve as meditating institutions and sites of potential resistance to the totalizing tendencies of states” p125 since the state also has the upper hand in deciding how many relationships are constituted.
A mundane example is to have particular names for people in particular intimate relationships - what we might call pet names.
Kink
Kink sub-cultures are particularly well known for the adoption of roles and practices that allow for the adoption of non-normative intimate and sexual relationships.
For example the roles of dominant and submissive which may be fixed through a relationship or may switch even within a particular encounter
In a study of of dominant and submissive BDSM roles in 2005 Hébert and Weaver 2005 write that
“Most participants, including both dominants and submissives, indicated that dominants should be, and usually are, empathic and understanding. Both roles stressed that dominants need to be caring and sensitive to how the submissive is feeling.”
A particular variation of the dominant submissive dynamic is daddy - little dynamic. The little  takes the role of a innocent, playful individual. They are not role-playing a child - although some others may do this for sexual or non sexual enjoyment - rather taking on the characteristics of a child, a puppy, a goblin and so on. The daddy may be any gender but takes on a nurturing parental role.
Medical aside
As an aside I would like to turn briefly to non intimate care in medicine which involves both formal roles of patient - including specific diagnoses - and and medical professional. But there is also a fair amount of literature that describes the unofficial terminology used by medical professionals to describe patients.
Sometimes these are affectionate for example Boyfriend refers to “A little old man who is a simple joy to take care of. This patient is sweet and unintentionally funny.”
but more often the literature describes derogatory terms like
Albatross “A chronically ill patient who will remain with a doctor until one or other of them expire”
or GOMER which stands for Get Out of My Emergency Room. Usually a male patient whose senility, chronic illness or lack of compliance portends troublesome and unrewarding care. (Coombs et al 1993)
These might often be presented as a way to avoid slipping into intimate care for example a study this year into What makes a compassionate relationship between caregiver and patient?  highlighted that “Professional training emphasises the importance of developing an ability to detach oneself from the patient’s distress and personal circumstances. (...) In order to protect themselves from such anxiety health professionals need to be sure that they don’t identify with patients.” (Goodrich 2016)
But a study from 1961 by medical sociologist Becker and colleagues (Boys in White) suggested that the detachment of name calling may be as much to do with disdain for patients that are not obedient and useful to their own progression within the existing system. (Wear et al 2006)
We are getting a little away from this presentation now but it does remind us that names are not automatically pro-care and that care practices - including those in performance settings) - may also be vehicles or even covers for power plays.
Choreography
So I see here a connection with Stuart’s exercise where roles are used to play with different forms of intimate caring relationships albeit cycling through them with some speed, fluidity and ambiguity.
Her’s is a particularly interesting exercise for me but other contemporary western European choreographers and American choreographers working in western Europe have been working with roles as choreographic tools and it is perhaps not a coincidence that these people are friends and colleagues with Stuart and each other as well as peers.
For example in Hana Lee Erdman’s work Animal Companion people enter an exhibition space where they are offered the opportunity to engage with an ‘animal companion’ (a human performer) who accompanies them during their visit.
Then there is Alice Chauchat who works with companions and lady companions - she works in the same circles as Lee Erdman so these ideas are in circulation - to choreograph relations between performers, the dance and the the audience.
And Keith Hennesy works with death and dying rituals in which the passive person takes the role of a corpse to be cared for.
And so in my own enquiry which has begun with an experience of these other practices that I have mentioned.
Traditionally choreography has been an aesthetic of mastery. Of certain kinds of skills and crafts. But how can care and particularly intimate care be an aesthetical practice as well as an ethical one.
I am starting to produce a lexicon of care roles taken from across different fields - choreography, kink, medicine and others. Not to produce a definitive menu of caring relationships because both personally and artistically we will want ambiguity and diversity and complexity. Rather such a lexicon can highlight the complexity and diversity of care relationships. And in their application they immediately become disturbed. A lexicon starts from the concrete real world practices of care and builds a bigger but not abstracted understanding of how what care might be.
So how might such a lexicon be used this expand the repertoires of care practices we have available to us as artists, citizens and humans - as beings constantly in relation to other people, beings and things.
