«Siamo passati da un sistema basato su valori sociali nei quali individualmente potevi dare qualche premio o incentivo, a considerare normale che il mercato regoli anche sfere che fino a 30 anni fa erano considerate beni sociali non commerciabili: sicurezza nazionale, giustizia, scuola, salute, protezione ambientale, la stessa procreazione. Perché preoccuparsi di questa mercatizzazione? Per due motivi. Il primo, più evidente, riguarda il principio di uguaglianza. In una società nella quale tutto è in vendita, la vita diventa ancora più difficile per chi ha meno. La mancanza di denaro non porta solo a vivere in condizioni più modeste, ma diventa una condanna. Il secondo, forse meno evidente, più difficile da descrivere, riguarda il potere corrosivo dei mercati. Dare un valore monetario a un bene civico lo corrompe, svaluta o altera la sua immagine. Abbiamo visto che nelle scuole che multavano i genitori che venivano a prendere i figli in ritardo, i ritardi sono aumentati. Perché il valore della puntualità è svanito e la multa è stata percepita come una tariffa: il prezzo di un sistema di recupero all’uscita più flessibile. Allo stesso modo pagare gli studenti per studiare riduce, nella loro mente, il valore etico dello studio.
