We have decided that it’s in everyones best interest if we cancel the opening reception for our new exhibit with Nellie Le that was scheduled for this coming Saturday. We will still be hanging the new exhibit and will have an online preview (sign up at http://previews.rotofugi.com for first notification) but having a gathering at this point seems a little irresponsible. Our store and gallery in Chicago will remain open normal hours for the time being, but that may very well change as things develop. 11am-7pm Monday-Friday and 10am-6pm Saturday-Sunday. We have an online store at http://rotofugi.com and the option to either have items shipped or made available for in store pickup. Your support during this difficult time is certainly appreciated. —— Get ready for a cute overload when our March exhibit featuring the works of LA-based artist and illustrator Nellie Le opens! Born in 1986 and raised in the suburbs east of Los Angeles, Nellie grew up watching mid-century Disney shorts which had a huge influence on her work today. She works mostly in gouache and acrylic gouache in a color palette influenced by the colors of her childhood. Nellie has worked under two more of our favorite artists, Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura, and in fact it was at a party at their home where we first met Nellie a few years ago. —— Play All Day New Works by Nellie Le  March 21-April 12, 2020 BYOB Opening Reception CANCELLED —— Exhibit continues through April 12, 2020. Is It Time For A Switch?
No, not talking about the Nintendo Switch. And no, I don’t have one yet; Breath of the Wild still works fine for me on the Wii U. Wouldn’t mind the ability to play Sonic Mania on the go, though these days I’m mostly at my girlfriend’s, where she has a PS4, and that’s good for the time being as well.
Now, what I actually mean is another switch in format. Or should I say, a rolling back? The deal is this: the Attract Mode blog recently had a format change, and the current iteration is Version 2.75 as I call it (everything’s explained here, somewhat). And some people have enjoyed the jam packed game culture round ups! But not everyone.
Hopefully some of you might recall my ideas for putting the Attract Mode Twitter account to better use. So if you haven’t done so already, please head on over and cast your vote! Am basically interested in seeing if I should stick to the program or go back to the previous approach… back to Version 2.5, I guess?
Or perhaps create an in-between of sorts, like a Version 2.6 maybe? I’m personally fond (and proud) of the round ups when all is said and done, but not so much the process. Plus some are finding them exhausting to go through as well, which means some cool sh*t is potentially going unnoticed.
Like, if this post was the part of the said sensory overload, the latest collab between Amanda Visell & Michelle Valigura might possibly be lost in the shuffle. Also, as most can tell, the plan to publish every Monday or Tuesday hasn’t exactly panned out, so who knows if the Alice in the Tulgey Wood arcade set would even be available once I finally found the time for the next installment?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s also the Alice's Mad Tea Party arcade set…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the Alice, Who RU arcade set…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
… There’s only three left of the last two sets! BTW, the image at the very top is courtesy of nintendu. And one more thing: if you want to help choose the direction of the blog, but don’t have a Twitter account, just leave a comment below!
Don’t forget: Attract Mode is now on Medium! There you can subscribe to keep up to date, as well as enjoy some “best of” content you might have missed the first time around, plus be spared of the technical issues that’s starting to overtake Tumblr.

Amanda Visell & Michelle Valigura continue their amazing partnership, the duo's "Poopasus + Rider" set is back, their interpretation of the winged Pegasus returns in the below-pictured "Glow-in-the-Dark" color scheme. Giving a sly backwards glance, the 6 × 2½ × 4¾ inch "Poopasus" beast is eyeing a pellet of its own, um, well… you know. Of course the little girl character, the "Rider," is not only attired in a Pegasus costume but she's holding one of those ball-shaped feces. Limited to 15 pieces in this blue GID rendition is available right now in the myswitcheroo online shop, so make sure to grab one of these $90 sets before they're gone. http://ift.tt/2wCVsEk

Two-Rad: Crust-Man Bart- Off by Panda Propaganda Toys They say two heads are better than one. I’m pretty sure this is what they were talking about. This hand cast and painted 6” carded figure is a signed and numbered edition of 20. $85
Magic Krustovski the Jiggly Clown by Dollar $lice Bootlegs  D$B answers the age old question. What would Krusty do? Or what would he not do?!? For SDCC our animated clown pal is still finding ways to get into trouble. Not sure what Dollar $lice has against Krusty, but these torturous toys keep selling out, sooooooo……. Hand cast and painted 3.75″ carded figure. Magnet articulated. Signed and numbered edition of 30. $55
The Great Showdowns by Scott C The Great Showdowns are a series of paintings, art shows, and books depicting classic pop culture good guys and bad guys. This figure was sculpted by George Gaspar of Double G toys who helped bring Scott C’s characters to life. You get two hand cast and hand painted resin figures on each card featuring Scott C’s signature. He also numbered them out of 50.
Killer Cola by Killer Bootlegs Beep bop boop burp. Killer Bootlegs shines with this parody of a bootleg from the 70s. Hand cast and painted 3.75″ scale carded figure. Signed and numbered edition of 50. $55
Worst Gift Ever by Janky Toys We’ve all been there. You tell your parents what you want for your birthday but they goand totally blow it. Enter, Worst Gift Ever. Janky Toys’ loving tribute to childhood disappointment. I mean, look at this poor kid crying all into his cake because he wanted a Jedi Master and instead he got a Medical Droid. Too bad kid! That’s what mid-life therapy is for. Hand cast and painted 3.75” carded figure. Signed and numbered edition of 40. $45
Leia is not your Toy by Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura Our favorite princess once came packaged with a comb accessory and a mirror. That’s right, look it up! The vintage 12” doll had no blaster, no weapon of any kind to defend herself. This is one way to make Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura mad. But anger often leads to important art. Here is Amanda and Michelle’s answer in toy form. A hand painted hand cast 3.75” carded resin figure. Signed and numbered edition of 50 featuring 10 each of 5 different t-shirt designs. $100
Prize Pet by RYCA
Every time I came home with a fish from the fair my mom said, “It’s a trap!” She had to take care of the fish for years! Now you can own your very own little fish head friend and he will happily live in his hand made bubble for years to come with very little effort on your (or your mom’s part). Hand cast and painted 4″ carded figure. Signed and numbered edition of 65. $75
  Holiday Special by RYCA
You’ll need twice the amount of sun screen when you join your favorite Bounty Hunter on a “holiday.” Won’t that be “special?” Hand cast and painted 3.75″ carded figure. Signed and numbered edition of 65. $60
Dark Invader by Buzzard Guts Sometimes inspiration comes from a bootleg of a rip off of an homage. Buzzard Guts made our Dark Invader dreams come true. Hand cast and painted 3.75″ scale carded figure.  Signed and numbered edition of 50.
Cantina Denizen by Manly Art You can bet when he sidles up to the bar everyone knows his name. There’s nothing like a hand painted portrait of an old friend. Each backing card is an original painting! All 24 are different portraits of this kindly fellow. Signed and numbered out of 24. $150 and comes with a sparkly turquoise resin figure.

The duo of Amanda Visell & Michelle Valigura have brought back their adorably nubby tusked "Pachyderm" figure, this time hand-cast in translucent pink resin that has been infused with glitter! Known as the "Technicolor Pachyderm", this hand-painted edition is limited to only 15 of the roughly 3½-inch tall pieces, but this $40 gem isn't the only thing that was added to the myswitcheroo online shop… They have also brought back their "Stag & Lumberjane" sets! Cast in a glittering "Golden Stag" edition of 15 handmade pieces, the regal "Stag" part stands roughly 6 × 2 × 4 inches while the dimunative "Lumberjane" (with her tiny ax accessory) can ride on the beast's back or just sit near him… And, just like the "Technicolor Pachyderm", these are available now in the myswitcheroo online shop, though these larger "Golden Stag" pieces are $90 per set. http://ift.tt/2oHGwVQ

Finally, The ET Video Game That You’ve Been Waiting For
Since there was no proper game culture wrap-up last week (again, sorry about that), along with how I’m filing this at the end of the week instead of the beginning (there’s… stuff happening, so consider this one of the more minor examples), there’s a lot to cover this time around. Including a bunch of happenings from the word of art.
So kicking things off is the latest from Amanda Visel X Michelle Valigura. Much like their Star Wars, Beetlejuice, and Heathers cabinets, here we their ideas of what arcade games based upon ET and Aliens could and should look like. And yeah, playing as Gertie is an approach that could salvage its reputation in the video game sphere, plus I totally want an Alien/Aliens video game starring Newt.
Actually, hasn’t something similar already happened? Sorry, haven’t kept up with the video adaptations; last one I played was for the Jaguar. Anyhow, and unfortunately, both pieces are sold out online. Though… and I’m not 100% certain, but… they’re both at the Thailand Toy Expo, so maybe they brought a few extras with them?
Elsewhere in Asia, Japan to be exact, are not just one but two other notable shows, and both focused on electronic entertainment. First is something you’re probably familiar with, the My Famicase Exhibition, and not just because it’s been around for 13 years. As of this writing, the entire assortment has yet to be shared officially, so you’ll have to turn to Twitter to see the participants boasting their own handiwork.
[UPDATE: 5/7/17] Actually, all the pieces are finally viewable on the Famicase homepage proper. Here are my faves…
Tumblr media
… I particularly love Saturdays’s flavor text: “The gateway opens once a week. Tomorrow I’m going in.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
… You kinda need to see the actual cart in the wild to understand; here’s a pic courtesy of @mandimappy…
Tumblr media
And finally...
Tumblr media
… It’s maybe pointing out that the artist responsible for the concept above also did a piece for last year’s event as well, which ended up becoming something that’s actually playable! Hope history repeats itself cuz I really want a game about an all cat band with gross lyrics.
Now, the other show is something you may know nothing about, cuz a. the 16 Bit Models Exhibition has only been around for two years and b, was only open for just one day, hence why it’s fallen under many radars.
Admittedly, I found last year’s assortment a bit more up my alley, most due to my affinity for the obscure. Yet I can still appreciate this very realistic take on the Super Mario Bros (btw, am also sorry that I don’t know who’s responsible for what)…
Tumblr media
Along with this realistic take on Pauline and Donkey Kong…
Tumblr media
Yet the exhibition was a reminder that not every Nintendo game out there has been paid tribute to death, specifically Urban Champion…
Tumblr media
The dioramas are easily the best parts of the 16 Bit Models Exhibition. Here’s an equally impressive one, featuring Castlevania…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though once again, the obscurer the better, so this tribute to Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa gets a thumbs up from me…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is the lesser known game: Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa or City Connection? The latter at least was released on the NES at the time. Then again…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving onto fashion, UNIQLO recently unveiled an upcoming line based upon Mario and company. As one might expect from UNIQLO, they look quite nice! Here’s the campaign movie from Japan…
youtube
The best part is that UNIQLO’s entire line is headed towards the US! Was not expecting that. Alas, certain designs are not available to everyone, and I know more than a few adults who wouldn’t mind that Kirby tee. So here comes YUMMY MART to the rescue…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somewhat along the same lines is Namco enlisting the talents of PAYNUS, who represents some of the esoteric offerings in the Pac-Store…
Tumblr media
The constant reference to pizza is something that’s present in both the PAYNUS designs and Namco’s own in-house efforts…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, back at METEOR, in addition to the latest Famicase exhibit, they’ve also been busy with a collab with THUNDERBOX (which I highlighted just a few weeks ago). And from the looks of miki800.com’s post, MOUNTAIN GRAPHICS is also involved? Talk about a holy trinity…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whereas the previous combination makes sense, the following is… unexpected. Recently discovered that R23X has teamed up with the The Yetee of all folks to produce a line of shirts showcasing glitched VHS stills. Including one that’s game related (technically two; there’s also a crop top version as well)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks neat and all, but I’m less of a Final Fantasy 7 fan and more of a Wave Race 64 aficionado, and would therefore love to see this on a tee…
Tumblr media
I’d also love to get my hands on one of these 100 yen pins that @rgb_club posted a couple weeks back, though no word on when it might be available…
Tumblr media
Here’s another thing that’s not for sale, mostly cuz there was only one, which is of this baseball player made to look like a Street Fighter…
Tumblr media
Which had the better Spinning Bird Kick; Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li…
Tumblr media
Or City Hunter (yup, that’s Jackie Chan; via tenshokyaku)…
Tumblr media
Sticking with leggy video game stars, thanks to thevideogameartarchive, we finally have an answer as to whether Link is boxers or briefs…
Tumblr media
And sticking with Link for just a bit more, I particularly dig nozovis’s summary of the fun times him and Zelda have in Breath of the Wild…
Tumblr media
Along those same lines is a zine that @WPR_haru made that’s filled with all the photos he took, one that I’d love to have a copy of…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which fan art featuring a character from behind do you prefer; this Breath of the Wild piece by James Kochalka…
Tumblr media
Or this Overwatch piece by some unknown artist (if anyone knows, plz let me know)…
Tumblr media
Here we have @RAStyle85’s Astro City with a lots of buttons, for playing whatever game that requires that many inputs…
Tumblr media
And here we have former Taito graphic designer Atsushi Iwata’s custom-built device, for producing pixel graphics!
Tumblr media
Such things were used in other places, like SNK. Here we have a quote from someone who worked there, courtesy of videogamesdensetsu…
“The sprite editor used by artists for a number of SNK fighting games (Art Box) was written for the Neo-Geo, and uses the Neo-Geo as the interface. As in, you would use the joystick and the buttons to draw the sprite. He didn’t believe this when he started there, until one of the higher ups showed him by firing up one of the machines and drawing a kickass sprite of Robert Garcia in like 10 minutes”.
Does the Art Box sound familiar? Well, it should be.
The latest from The Gaming Historian, on the creation of the d-pad, answers the one question I’ve had for ages: if Nintendo was able to patent the control input, how were Sega and others able to get away with something seemingly similar?
youtube
Remember the 8bit Harmonica from last week? Well here’s another project involving the Famicom by Ugoita that’s a bit more… random?
youtube
This post has gone on for far too long without any Sega. Time to fix that with some gifs of Sonic from Sega Saturn de Hakken!! Tamagotchi Park, which as you may have guessed is a Tamagotchi title in which you can raise Sonic (and sorry, chilli dogs was Sonic’s fave food in the US, though I believe Sonic Generations would later recon that; via pr0jectneedlemouse)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though you can also raise other Sega personalities, like Opa Opa and Alex Kidd, plus even a Mega Drive cart (via grooveonfight)?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super obscure Sega humor doesn’t get more obscure than this folks (note to self: on the next car trip, bring along the soundtrack to Super Hang-On cuz repeated plays of OutRun and Daytona USA tunes can get old after a while; via dnopls)…
Tumblr media
I know the following has been shared liked crazy (hell, even NPR posted the damn thing), and for good reason. All I can say is, Pikachu #14, get your sh*t together…
youtube
Speaking of Pikachu and his pals, The Pokemon Center released a line of Ditto Gachapon figures that are supa kawaii (via retrogamerblog)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though the one piece of plastic I want the most is the also recently unveiled Samus from Metroid Prime figure by Good Smile Company, which looks hella cooler than the previously released Other M Figma…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Am embarrassed to admit that I have no idea where this following screenshot is from, nor the tune that accompanies it, both courtesy of radicalhelmet. If anyone would be kind enough to clue me in, would be supremely appreciated…
Tumblr media
I wonder what the cover girl of this issue of Spoon is playing (via sixteen-bit)…
Tumblr media
And this week’s recommended reading comes courtesy of mah boi Don Miller, and is actually something that Oliver at Minus World also picked up on, which is a book produced by the creator of LSD: Dream Emulator, among other things, and someone I’ve mentioned quite a few times around these parts. It’s called The Art of Computer Designing: A Black and White Approach and is available via archive.org…
Tumblr media
As someone who has always planned on transforming an old iMac into a fish tank, thanks to Phazed, I know have other ideas…
Tumblr media
And finally, and I also know that I’ve been saying the same thing over and over again, but Super Attractive Club members will be receiving another round up game culture snapshots, hopefully very soon! Until then, please enjoy this still life courtesy of peazy86…
Tumblr media
BTW, peazy86 also does music, plus music videos…
youtube
