COMA (1978) and the 13th WARRIOR (1999) Michael Crichton series.
Tumblr media
What do these two movies have in common? The short answer, nothing. The real answer, Michael Crichton. I have been following Michael Crichton's movies for some time and will continue to do so until I have posted all his movies as a director, movies based on his novels or scripts he has written or participated in based on IMdB list. That is my intention.
The two movies mentioned in the title of the blog are special to me. COMA was a novel I read many years ago by Robin Cook and saw the movie later on. Curiously enough, Robin Cook is also a medical doctor, who I followed and a fan of his, having read many of his long list of books.
Tumblr media
Now the 13th Warrior is new to me. But one thing I have in common with the film is the nationality of the main character who appears on the poster, Antonio Banderas, being a Spaniard as I am, sort of makes me proud. Your right, that is not reason enough, but he is a good actor.
Before we get into the story, perhaps it would be wise to have some notion of what is a coma, if you haven't guessed, but in any case, here is a description: GO TO: Coma - Wikipedia
So, let's get to it.
Tumblr media
Coma is a 1978 American mystery thriller film based on the 1977 novel of the same name by Robin Cook. The film rights were acquired by director Michael Crichton.
The cast includes Geneviève Bujold, Michael Douglas, Elizabeth Ashley, Richard Widmark, and Rip Torn. Among the actors in smaller roles are Tom Selleck, Lois Chiles, and Ed Harris.
Confessedly, I have a passion for thoroughness. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing, exceeds any statue of limitations sometimes, making my blog unbearably long. The story was adapted again into a two-part television miniseries broadcast in September 2012, but I cannot help myself to look into it and if possible, post it. Coma (1978 film) - Wikipedia
IMdB: 6'9 DRAMA-MYSTERY-THRILLER DURATION: 1h 53m
When a young female doctor notices an unnatural amount of comas occurring in her hospital she uncovers a horrible conspiracy.

Coma is a 2012 American television miniseries based on the 1977 novel Coma by Robin Cook and the subsequent 1978 film Coma. It is a four-hour medical thriller released in September, 2012.
The series was directed by Mikael Salomon and produced by Ridley Scott and his brother Tony Scott, the same team that adapted The Andromeda Strain into the 2008 miniseries on A&E. The film is dedicated to Tony Scott, who died in August 2012, only weeks before its broadcast premiere. Coma (American miniseries) - Wikipedia

A young medical student discovers that something sinister is going on in her hospital after routine procedures send more than a few seemingly healthy patients into comas on the operating table.

The 13th Warrior is a 1999 American historical fiction action film based on Michael Crichton's 1976 novel Eaters of the Dead, which is a loose adaptation of the tale of Beowulf combined with Ahmad ibn Fadlan's historical account of the Volga Vikings.
It stars Antonio Banderas as ibn Fadlan, as well as Diane Venora and Omar Sharif. It was directed by John McTiernan; Crichton directed some uncredited reshoots. The film was produced by McTiernan, Crichton, and Ned Dowd, with Andrew G. Vajna, James Biggam and Ethan Dubrow as executive producers.
Production and marketing costs reputedly reached $160 million, but it grossed $61 million at the box office worldwide, becoming the biggest box office bomb of 1999, with losses of up to $129 million. The 13th Warrior - Wikipedia

Ed Harris has publicly refused to speak about his experiences working on "The Abyss" (1989), saying, "I'm not talking about 'The Abyss' and I never will." One of the few things he said about it was "Asking me how I was treated on 'The Abyss' is like asking a soldier how he was treated in Vietnam." Similarly, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio said, "'The Abyss' was a lot of things. Fun to make was not one of them."
Cast members had to become certified divers before filming began. The Deepcore crew started training together in the Caribbean one month before filming, in order to create a sense of camaraderie. Harris was not among them, as he was still filming another movie, so he got his certificate while training in a lake nearby. The actors playing the SEALs received a separate, military training. At the end of the shoot, Harris was the most accomplished diver (near-professional level) despite not having trained a single day in the actual ocean.
During underwater filming, Harris almost drowned a few times. One time was while filming the scene where he had to swim without a suit at the bottom of the submerged set, and the safety diver took very long to hand him a breathing regulator. However, the closest call came during the descent into the Abyss. Harris was wearing a helmet filled with liquid, and had to hold his breath while he was towed along a set. When he ran out of air, he gave the signal for oxygen, but his safety diver got hung up on a cable and could not get to him. Another crew member gave Harris a regulator, but it was upside down and caused him to suck in water. Underwater cinematographer Al Giddings saw what happened, ripped the upside down regulator, and gave him his own in the correct orientation. Later that evening, Ed broke down and cried.
The studio was considering Mel Gibson, Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, Harrison Ford, Kurt Russell and Patrick Swayze for the role of Virgil 'Bud' Brigman. Cameron suggested Ed Harris, but the studio was concerned about his lack of experience as leading man, as well as his receding hairline (something that Cameron felt added to his everyman appeal). Harris convinced the studio with a screen test where he wore a motorcycle helmet as a diving helmet. (IMDb)
James Cameron declared this as the worst production he was ever involved with, a sentiment shared by many of the cast members. The difficulties of filming around and under water put a great strain on both cast and crew, further complicated by Cameron's notorious perfectionism. Many of them have been quoted as saying that they would never do a sequel or movie like 'The Abyss' again. For Cameron, a director known to often collaborate with the same cast and crew members, this movie had suspiciously few people who worked with him again, including almost the entire cast (save for Michael Biehn), composer Alan Silvestri and director of photography Mikael Salomon.

The Andromeda Strain (2008)
Tumblr media
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a book-turned-movie that deviates as much from the original source material as 2008's The Andromeda Strain. A significant number of new characters, different plot points, and concepts turn it into a completely different story. Is that a good thing, or a bad?
A satellite crash lands near the small town of Piedmont, Utah and unleashes a horrifying disease. It kills within seconds and drives the few survivors insane. An elite and dedicated group of scientists are sent to a high-tech facility to study the mutating organism, find out where it came from, how to kill it and ultimately, how to save the world. Meanwhile, journalist Jack Nash (Eric McCormack) tries to connect the dots between this disease and a mysterious military operation.
It's an exciting movie/miniseries full of suspense and intrigue as the scientists dig into the horrific incident. Between the doctors investigating, the government spooks following Nash, and the seemingly fruitless attempts to stop the virus from spreading, it's got you gripped. One of the pluses of deviating from the source material is that even those familiar with the novel by Michael Crichton will be unable to predict what's coming next. This movie is nearly three hours long and it maintains its suspense for the entire time - no small feat.
Despite the widespread tension, I still found myself second-guessing the science being thrown at me. This is one of those movies where computers can just do anything. I'm unaware of any computer, even today capable of instantly converting the DNA pattern of something into binary code and then converting that code into letters so that scientists are able to recreate images or music or anything like that, but that sort of thing is a piece of cake here. This brings me to my second criticism. When it comes to scientific equipment, things happen in a convenient manner an awful lot. I don’t want to say too much but there's some needlessly cryptic stuff during the conclusion.
Overall, The Andromeda Strain is entertaining but I missed the simplicity of the original story. It’s a highly technical novel that builds tension by showing you how complicated and how difficult it would be to analyze and combat an extraterrestrial virus. In this way, it feels completely genuine and brings terror to a new level. This adaptation is wilder and crazier. In the process, it loses a lot of the novel's charm.
I recommend The Andromeda Strain. While it lasted, I was fully invested. Afterward, however, I had many questions about the film's internal logic and I’m pretty convinced some of the wilder plot developments simply make no sense. It’s fun, and if you’re a fan of science fiction it might just be an introduction to a much superior piece of work. I know it’s unfair to compare books and movies. They’re different media, but in this case, when they advertise that it’s based on a novel on the DVD cover and the two are so different, so needlessly different, I can’t help myself. I say rent it. (On DVD, November 9, 2014)
