I think one crucial aspect about Starlander (or Homelander in general) is that Homelander is so earnest in his "romantic pursuits".

He feels genuinely betrayed by Maeve when he realises that she was never into him and first tries to humiliate her to (childishly) hurt her back, but there's also always still that little glimmer of hope in him that she really DID like him A LITTLE at SOME point...maybe? please? He was under the impression that it was real, bottom line.

That earnestness blends right into his pityful desperation. He needs to be loved so bad it makes him spineless, hence the whole Stormfront disaster - he wasn't openly right wing before her, it doesn't suit his persona or character at all (and his tragedy is in part that he can't differentiate between the two) and he DOES try to speak up against her when she goes on her Übermenschen tirades, at least at first. But he folds because he needs her. Then there's the fact that Stillwell managed to, well, manage him for so long because he longed for her approval - and he felt that they had a genuine connection (as he always does when people are nice to him). The moment he started to suspect she didn't return his feelings, he lashed out. But that, again, is because he trusts and depends on people emotionally to a really high degree. [Soldier Boy and Noir are also really great examples for this, Noir when it comes to HL lashing out and betraying how he can't keep up with that anymore and Soldier Boy because it proves just how QUICKLY HL is ready to trust and love someone]

Bottom line I really really would've loved if they'd given #Homelight just a LITTLE more time for him to develop that proper emotional bond with her. We SAW that when he reached for her hand during the interview, he TRIED it, but the whole arc was over too quickly. Of course, she has a special position because she doesn't fit into the boxes he sorts people into. But I would've liked to see him be pathetic for her as well..........

Pictured below is Bärchen Und Die Milchbubis! They are a band from Hannover, Germany, they released one album and two singles between 1980 and 1982, and now, in 2024, they are touring again! But that's not why I played them in the show, I played them because they are one of the bands that are featured in the fantastic Inner World 033 podcast, by the World Of Echo label, and compiled by the Famous Mammals. It's a three hour long feast of great great music, and I wanted to direct my listeners to this podcast, go listen and enjoy. Also, this episode of De Algemene Verwarring is a digital one, so as always I'm playing some tracks that I don't own on a physical lp or cd. ich finds an sich sehr gut dass sie die abstammung etwas diverser macht, auch wenn sies auf fragwürdige weise tut (der kleine mit der brille ist asiatischer abstammung & der große starke „dumme“ ist mexikanischer abstammung? okay), vielleicht kann man ja positiv überrascht werden (ich fürchte nicht) aber dass sie justus dünn macht & justus europäischer abstammung ist gibt mir halt auch diese extrem weirden vibes von wegen er soll der coole neue mädchenschwarm werden der schlau gutaussehend und natürlich weiß ist 😬 white boy er woche und so. justus war schon immer ein charakter, der sich die vorurteile die er wegen seines aussehend von anderen erfuhr, zu nutze gemacht hat ! und ihn zu so nem konventionellen milchbubi zu machen zerstört so viel seines charakters! und NATÜRLICH kommt sie da mit fatphobia um die ecke 🥲 warum machen das 80% aller leute die ddf schreiben? niemand zwingt euch!
