Just about 13 years ago, I started what has been for me, my life’s work — this site. And honestly, when I started this site, I couldn’t have imagined three-quarters of the things I’ve done and experienced over JOVM’s history to ever happen.  I’ve covered roughly 1,100-1,200 shows in NYC, with a handful of shows in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia.  I’ve covered about a dozen or more…

The most valuable day of all! – Oct 6th 2018
The most valuable day of all! – Oct 6th 2018
by PeerTracks | Oct 13, 2018 We spent the entire day locked up in the living room doing a huge recap of the 5 previous days. We went over all topics, who we met at Mondo, Who we met at Rights Tech Summit. Then went into all sides of the business. We had everyone in the same physical space so the dynamic was 1000x better than remote discussions via Skype. We covered the Blockchain side of things, the PeerTracks streaming platform side, the RMP, the marketing. We had Nate doing research as we spoke and John taking notes the entire way through. So we had the perfect flow of a dynamic, creative discussion, mixed with some order and archiving so we can make sure nothing brilliant slips through the cracks. This is the only picture of this full day discussion but here’s a fun fact about it. It was taken by Cédric and Patrick. No editing. Cedric started the panorama from the left side. Once he got passed Patrick’s red sneakers, Patrick got up and grabbed the camera while Cedric jumped over Billy to pretend like he was just entering the room. Thought we’d share our secrets :P
Tumblr media
After that we headed to a pub near Times Square to watch the Conor vs Khabib UFC fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Times Squares actually got John to express stuff using his face. Powerful Times Square.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was so crowded in the pub that some of the guy returned to Brooklyn to rent the event PPV. UFC 229 from the comfort of the AirBNB
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This trip ended with late night conversation about Brazilian Jiujitsu and how great this last couple of days has really been for everyone. The entire team is flying back home with new motivation, meaning and purpose. We have a clear job to do and that’s to change the music world for the better. PeerTracks Team. Mondo.NYC back in its 3rd year: October 2-5, 2018
Remember the inaugural Mondo.NYC in 2016 and its follow-up last year? The global business conference and festival uniting music and technology, with emerging artists, innovators and industry insiders? We sure do, and you can get a glimpse of the past too by glancing at 2016 and 2017 photos and articles here.
But why dwell on what was yesterday, if there is a new opportunity to learn everything about new trends in music business, connect with music professionals, experience innovation at first hand and listen to music from exciting emerging local acts but also from as far as Syria or India and France or Hungary, with many other countries in between.
Mondo.NYC 2018 will take place from October 2nd to 5th. During the day, the main hub will be the beautiful Williamsburg Hotel in Brooklyn and at night the independent music venues on the Lower East Side will welcome bands from all over the world.  For the exact locations, simply check out the conference schedule with a music schedule and/or app yet to come.
Ever wanted to know about Blockchain and how it might become the next big thing in music business? Mondo.NYC 2018 is just the place to learn everything there is about it. There will be many more topics covered too and we still need to dive into all the highly interesting topics a bit more thoroughly. Still two weeks to go!
Looking through the performing bands, we are psyched to see various familiar names whom we love seeing live, to a point that we have also featured some of them at one of our monthly glamglare parties. That titbit aside, call us biased but here are our personal, special local recommendations: åMBe, Ekurtis, Gabriela Marlena, GIRL SKIN, HoneyChrome, Hopper Race, Joe Wood, Late Guest at the Party, Mars Motel, New Myths, RYAL, Satellite Mode and Scratch.
Yet we are equally enthusiastic to see international bands playing club stages like Brass Phantoms (Ireland), Casper Skulls (Canada), Crosa Rosa (U.K.), Frankiie (Canada), Iress (Los Angeles, USA), Ivan & The Parazol (Hungary), Little Wise (Australia), Our Lady Peace (Canada), Stevans (‘Europe’) – with more yet to be discovered!
Our (pre)-coverage has just begun. More as we get closer with having a bit more time to really listen to everyone.
For more info about Mondo.NYC go here, for tickets go here, and follow us along on our socials as we cover the festival.
Follow Mondo.NYC on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
To get a taste, listen to our Mondo.NYC 2018 playlist – which will see more additions as we get closer:

Where is Northside Festival 2019?
It‘s not happening this year for sure and this is not so much a surprise as the air of decline has been palpable during the last years. In 2018, the energy level of the music event barely surpassed what is happening on any other weekend in Williamsburg and Bushwick. Innovation still seemed to go strong, but apparently this was not enough.
The weird thing is that nobody seems to miss it. A Google search over „Northside Festival“ finds only outdated information from last year and a concert of the same name in Denmark (which is alive and kicking). Nobody declares the festival for cancelled, postponed or put some other spin on it. Last year we received requests from bands who wanted to play our showcase (which we did not do in 2018), but nothing this year. Everybody seemed to have noticed the obvious and moved on.
Nothing to be happy about. NYC deserves a good showcase music festival and the idea to do one SXSW-style in Williamsburg and Bushwick only and add some big stages to it was promising.
We still have Mondo.NYC in October and New Colossus in March. Let‘s hope that one of them or both find a recipe to become the next CMJ.

News/Announcements: Shoutouts to Patreon Patrons, Creatives Rebuild New York and Asian Arts Initiative I’m currently in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec for the 22nd annual FME Festival. Y’all should expect photos and other coverage over the course of the upcoming days and weeks, along with my regular coverage here. But in the meantime, the show must continue as much as possible. So let’s get to it, right? Earlier this site, turned 14. 14 years of anything — especially a job — is an exceedingly long time. In the blogosphere, that’s roughly 22 lifetimes. Now, when I started JOVM, I was felt as though I had no real choice but to go out on my own. I didn’t feel — or believe — that I’d get a fair shot to do what this site has become with another outlet.  I’ve long felt a desire to create something similar to the wildly eclectic, dynamic, global sort of environment I grew up immersed in as a young, Black boy from Corona, Queens. And I didn’t regularly see the environment I grew up in represented in the music magazines and sites that I loved to read. To me, that’s a real weakness because — well, there’s amazing music out there that’s not getting the love that it should both nationally and internationally.  When I started JOVM, I couldn’t have imagined covering the things I’v covered, and the things I’ve experienced and seen to have ever happened.  I’ve covered roughly 1,100-1,200 shows in NYC, with a handful of shows in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia I’ve covered about a dozen or more festivals, including traveling to Montreal for M for Montreal twice — in 2019 and 2022  I’ve been a panelist at Mondo.NYC Festival and at New Colossus Festival, speaking about PR, promotion and press for indie artists, giving my perspective as a indie blogger I made a cameo in a JOVM mainstay’s music video — and it’s a very noticeable spot towards the end of the video  I’ve photographed George Clinton, Patti LaBelle, Buddy Guy, Snoop Dogg, Blondie, Nile Rodgers, Roky Erickson, Philip Bailey, Blind Boys of Alabama, and a growing list of legendary and beloved artists, as well as this site’s growing list of mainstays Back in July, I was invited to be a panelist at the inaugural Elsewhere Music Festival and Conference in Wichita, KS speaking about creating a career in music Also back in July I moderated a panel presented by The New Colossus Festival and Groover on How to Promote Your Show featuring a group of super knowledgeable friends and colleagues  Covering FME in Rouyn-Noranda, Québec With this site, I’ve managed to carve out a unique path for myself — and in the blogosphere. Because music media — and generally the media world — is an incredibly homogeneous space, the coverage that you see as a consumer and fan tends to come from a similar perspective. If you don’t believe me, look at the editorial staff at your favorite music magazine or website. It explains why certain artists, genres and styles are covered over others. But it also explains why you see the exact same coverage of the same artists, genres and styles, too.  I’m looking forward to what year 14 holds for JOVM. And hopefully with your support, I can keep this thing going. Now, as you know, I’ve said this many times: All work — including creative work — is impossible without money. After all, time is money. Effort is money. Then add all the expenses it takes to actually work.  Unsurprisingly, this site and the work that makes it possible is impossible without money. It’s a simple — and often frustrating — fact of life. So, if you’ve been frequenting this site over the past handful of years, there are a handful of folks I want to thank once again for their support:   Sash Alice Northover Bella Fox Jenny MacRostie Janene Otten  All of those folks have been generous Patreon patrons. Every and any amount really helps keeps this sort of journalism and criticism alive and ongoing. So if you’re able and willing, please feel free to check out the P...
