In April of 1967 Paul was in Florida and crossed paths with John Phillips and Lou Adler, the organizers of the Monterey International Pop Festival. He insisted that the event would be incomplete without Hendrix, whom he called “an absolute ace on the guitar“. Paul agreed to join the board of organizers on the condition that the Jimi Hendrix Experience performs at the festival in mid-June. Jimi’s performance at Monterey in June 1967 launched his US career.
Jimi Hendrix:
"Paul McCartney was the big bad Beatle, the beautiful cat who got us the gig at the Monterey Pop Festival. That was our start in America."

Just for fun. I'd choose Monterey so I could mingle with Brian Jones and Cass Elliot while watching Jimi and Janis steal the show.

The first Monterey International Pop festival begins at the County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. It's the first of many big Rock festivals, with The Who, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and The Animals among those performing. Many consider it the beginning of the "Summer of Love."

Music History Today: June 16, 2023
June 16, 1967: The first Monterey International Pop Festival began at the County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. The three-day concert was pivotal in rock's evolution as a force in the entertainment business and the culture at large. It served as the blueprint for the explosion of rock festivals that culminated in Woodstock, and with its crowds of face-painted hippies and slogan of "music, love, and flowers," Monterey defined the look, spirit, and sound of the Summer of Love.
It marked the first American appearances by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Who, and Ravi Shankar, the first large-scale public performance of Janis Joplin, and the introduction of Otis Redding to a mass American audience. The show was one of the beginnings of the "Summer of Love" in 1967 and the public debut of the hippie, flower power, and flower children movements and era.

The FIRST Monterey International Pop Festival
On this date June 16, 1967, the 3-day Monterey International Pop Festival opened in Monterey, CA. The festival was planned in seven weeks by John Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas, record producer Lou Adler, Alan Pariser and publicist Derek Taylor.
The festival is remembered for the first major American appearances by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Who and Ravi Shankar, the first large-scale public performance of Janis Joplin and the introduction of Otis Redding to a mass American audience.
The song "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" was written by Phillips and sung by Scott McKenzie, released in May 1967, to promote the event.
Members of The Wrecking Crew served as the "All-Star House Band" playing behind some of the acts.
