Car theft is a really big issue in my neighbourhood. Every couple of days, there'll be an announcement in the news about another person whose car has been yoinked by the creeps. It's easy to blame the victim, and doing so helps make us feel better about our own risk of falling prey to the same crime. And so that's what I'm going to do. This is their own fault for having cars that run.

A couple years ago, someone tried to steal the Diplomat I leave parked around the side of the house. I don't think you need me to tell you that it doesn't run. In fact, I have never seen this vehicle running under its own power. It is mostly used to store parts for the other Mopars. I thanked the universe for providing me with some free entertainment. Either this thief is a better mechanic than I am and would get it running, or they might leave some tools behind in frustration after an hour or two of trying to figure out why the choke doesn't work.

What I didn't expect was this: they went back to their car, drove off, then came back with a new battery. A new one! With the stickers still on it and everything. If you are not "into" the shitbox-ownership life, you may not understand the value of a new car battery. That value is approximately one hundred dollars, and in order to get it, you have to go to a store and spend money. Suffice it to say, my starter-battery infrastructure is a marvel of hackjob backyard engineering that would probably get me hired by a solar energy company, if any of them could write an even quarter-assed liability release.

After installing it under the hood, the Diplomat again didn't start, possibly because the 318 had been sawed in half by a self-destructing crankshaft sometime around 1993. It was at this point that my greed took over. Reaching over to my security system, I activated it. It's worth pointing out at this juncture that by "security system" I mean a moat of spilled petrochemicals around my home, and by "activated it," I mean that I dropped the candle I had been using for light into the aforementioned petrochemicals. My big tough thief ran into the night, terrified of a little fire. I stepped right through that fire, retrieved his brand-new battery, and took it inside.

For weeks after that, I wondered if the thief would come back. Maybe he did have big enough balls to sic the cops on me for taking his battery. Perhaps – and this thought excited me very much – he was dumb enough to bring me another battery. Sadly, he never returned, which made me surprisingly maudlin. I had scared off a potential new friend: someone who was willing to spend money to try and fix up a free Diplomat. In an effort to meet my accidental Mopar-pal again, I thought about going into car thievery for myself, but none of my neighbours owned anything interesting.

Dwayne Fietzer @joy_rd_hot_rods will be bringing this original 426 Max-Wedge 1963 Polara for Mopar Alley in November. This car has had only two owners. His father bought it new from Ed Carpenter Dodge in Wayne Michigan. His Dad worked at Dearborn Steel Tubing where the thunderbolts and a lot of great Ford performance cars came from. So, they weren’t exactly happy seeing his black 63 MaxWedge car sitting in the parking lot, but he was the head painter, so it sat up front. Around 1980 his parents got divorced and his father tried selling the car, but nobody was really interested in it at the time. His Dad was asking $3,100 for it! Thankfully, his father was too attached to it so it went back into storage. Dwayne went over to his fathers house one day somewhere around 1994 and his father was pushing it from one garage to another with a tire strapped to the front of his truck and nobody steering & complaining the whole time, so Dwayne told him "I’ll be right back" . Dwayne went home and got his trailer and he has owned the car ever since. Dwayne restored the car in early 2000’s, then like his Father he started a family so the car really hasn’t been out much in the last decade. He recently freshened up the motor it -had a bad freeze plug and some rust in one of the bores but other than that the car has 99.9 percent of the original interior. He painted the car and he also duplicated from the original exhaust which he still has a 3-inch stainless exhaust and a fresh set of cheater slicks. The car shows 15,000 miles on it, but his dad had put a 4:89 gear in it so the speedo is almost doing double. He has all the paperwork from the order sheet to truck driver delivery at the dealer. This 1976 Bradley GT is turbine-powered. Unlike the Mopar machine, however, which used step-down gearing and a TorqueFlite to transmit the turbine’s power to the tires, this Bradley uses the turbine’s more traditional jet thrust to move the car. That’s just like Maverick in Top Gun!

Providing that thrust is a Boeing 502-11B, a versatile turbojet engine that was originally intended for use in things like helicopters, aircraft starting compressors, and other non-automotive applications. According to the ad, this one runs without issue and has recently had its fuel system serviced. The Boeing service manual will be included with the sale for future wrenching needs.

The seller touts that the engine produces around 350 SHP (shaft horsepower), which they claim has taken the car to 60 miles per hour in a parking lot test run. They also say that it is very loud.

Other issues with this jet-powered car include a total lack of the ability to back up, seeing as there are no thrust reversers on the engine, and the lack of street-ability, as apparently the brake lights are presently non-functioning. On the plus side, once made street legal, it would easily dissuade even the most aggressive of tailgaters.

Under the open-top Bradley body lies what is described as a restored VW Beetle platform. The GT rides on the stock VW wheelbase, so no cutting was required in the transformation from People’s Car to Jet Fighter. The brakes and steering are said to work as they should, respectively, stopping and turning the car. No word is given about how the electrical system is maintained, but it should be an important factor as the 502’s startup and monitoring are handled through a dash-mounted electronic touch screen.

Everything on the car appears to be in perfectly serviceable shape, with decent-looking BF Goodrich tires underpinning along with shiny paint on its fiberglass body. The latter announces the engine by way of some spoiler and fender graphics. Those are likely rendered redundant by the cacophony of when the engine is running.

There is no title as it’s not really a road car but more of a home-built toy. Could it be titled? Sure, I guess. It also could have some sort of electric motor and battery set up added so it could actually run on the road without having to use the jet and make the neighborhood smell like a runway. But who would be brave enough to tackle this crazy jet-powered car as it sits?

I guess, and perhaps more importantly, who would do so AND could come up with the $18,900 asking price required to do so?

Friends, it's that time of the year again: I am engaged in a feud with my garbage-services professional. He has refused to replace my little wheelie-bin, which is in a terrible shape. Sure, that's mostly because of me using it as a mobile workbench. I'm not very good at hitting nails the first time. Also, I'm occasionally dropping an entire 8-3/4" Mopar rear end in there, but it's within the weight limit so it shouldn't be falling apart like this anyway.

I've been on and off the city help line for the last few weeks, trying to convince them to swap out my busted-ass wheelie-bin for a nice new one. It's hard work: you have to phone someone. How it should work after that is a city inspector has to come and agree that the bin is fucked, and then some amount of time happens, and some greasy contractor pulls up in a van and drops off a new wheelie-bin. Where things have broken down is that last part.

You see, I live in a very geographically complex part of the city. When they founded the town, the concept of "the grid" had not yet been invented. And they didn't stop there. Because of the actions of the city forefathers (and the city foremother,) our address system was both cutesy and designed by someone on cocaine.

This year, they turned up and replaced my neighbour's bin. And then my other neighbour's bin. And then the guy across the street's bin. You can only put up with so much of this before it becomes personal. So I did what any enterprising low-tax-enjoyer would do, and helped myself to a bin. No, I didn't take my neighbour's bins. They get up too early for that kind of thing, and they seem like the kind of busybodies who would remember whose bins are whose.

No, I went about things the old fashioned way: using a cordless angle grinder to let myself into the city parking lot, and wheeling out a bin. Don't worry, I took a couple spares, too. I don't want to do this shit again next year, and I bet I could turn two of these into a pretty cool go-kart.

Inaugural Mopar Event Excites from Start to Finish

With ambition and anticipation, Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio staged its Inaugural Ken Ganley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram World of Mopar presented by Arrington Performance, Sept. 22-24, 2023 and by all accounts, it was an extraordinary event. Produced and presented by Summit Motorsports Park with Mopar enthusiasts in mind, it featured three days of racing, a Fun Field Car Show, swap meet, car corral, manufacturers’ midway, concert by Trainwreck Country Band and fireworks. “We couldn’t be happier with our Inaugural Ken Ganley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram World of Mopar presented by Arrington Performance,” said Bill Bader Jr., president of Summit Motorsports Park. “Our team spent several months organizing this event, and we all wanted it to be successful, and we are all very grateful that it was.
