Der dritte Handydisplayaustausch wird hoffentlich der letzte sein

Im Juli 2021 habe ich mein kaputtes Handydisplay zum ersten Mal ausgetauscht. Wenige Wochen später ist mir das Handy schon wieder runtergefallen und das neue Display hat Sprünge bekommen. Ich habe mit ihnen gelebt, bis sich die Lage im März 2023 verschlimmert hat und ich das Display zum zweiten Mal austauschen musste.

Nicht mal vier Wochen später war es wieder kaputt. Das Handy lag auf der Bettdecke und fiel beim Aufstehen aus dem Bett, mit der Kante auf etwas Hartes. Die Gummihülle, mit der ich es von Anfang an zu schützen versucht habe, steht auf der Vorderseite nicht weit genug über das Display heraus, früher schon nicht, und seit das Handy durch meine Reparaturen und den vielen Turnschuhkleber ein bisschen dicker geworden ist, erst recht nicht mehr.

Im Techniktagebuch-Chat schreibe ich: "Ich würde gern dem ganzen Konzept Display für immer abschwören und zu Aleks' Konzept 'rechteckiger Stein als Handy' zurückkehren."

Am 25. Mai bestelle ich aber doch ein Ersatzdisplay. "Gut jedenfalls, dass ich es nicht schon bei den ersten Sprüngen" (also Ende März) "wieder ausgetauscht habe, weil es mir danach noch mal runtergefallen und noch viel kaputter gegangen ist", schreibe ich im Chat.

Ich möchte dieses Ersatzdisplay aber erst einbauen, wenn ich eine bessere Handyhülle gefunden habe, eine, die auch die Vorderseite beschützt. Denn was ich anfangs nicht wusste: Man wird so ein Ersatzdisplay wahrscheinlich nicht spannungsfrei (also ganz eben) einkleben können und wahrscheinlich auch nicht so, dass es nicht eine Winzigkeit höher über das Handy rausragt als im Neuzustand. (Beides liegt an hartnäckigen Kleberrückständen vom Originaldisplay.) Das heißt, wenn das Handy beim Runterfallen auf die Vorderseite oder den Rand fällt, geht es noch bereitwilliger kaputt als sowieso schon.

Die Suche nach einer neuen Hülle gestaltet sich langwierig. Eine Klapphülle möchte ich nicht, weil ich alle paar Sekunden aufs Handy schaue und dann den halben Tag nur mit Aufklappen beschäftigt wäre. "So idiotisch, dass 'heavy duty' bei Handyhüllen immer nur 'Traktorreifendesign auf der eh überhaupt nicht gefährdeten Rückseite' bedeutet", schreibe ich im Chat. Dann finde ich aber doch eine Lösung:

Der Handyring in der Mitte der Rückseite gehört nicht zum Lieferumfang; ich habe ihn von der Vorgängerhülle abgelöst und auf die neue geklebt.

Die neue Hülle macht das Handy sehr hässlich und so klobig, dass es kaum noch in die Hosentasche passt, aber davon abgesehen finde ich sie überzeugend. Endlich schützt ein dicker, weit vorstehender Rand auch die Vorderseite.

Dann tausche ich zum dritten Mal das Display aus. Mittlerweile muss ich nicht mal mehr bei Instructables nachsehen, wie es geht, und ich mache mir auch keine großen Sorgen mehr, dass ich dabei was beschädigen könnte. Wie schon beim zweiten Mal sind 90% der Arbeit das Abwuzeln des Turnschuhklebers, um ebene Klebeflächen herzustellen. Und ich hoffe, jetzt ist Ruhe.

A Little Boost Mobile Love

Years ago I moved my cell phone to Virgin Mobile (on Sprint's network, which is now Boost Mobile on Verizon's network). Why? Cost. It was just the cheapest deal. And the most I ever paid for a new phone was $80 without ever being tied down to a contract.

Every time I've seen an almost competitive plan, the cost of replacing phones makes moving phone plans not worth it.
