Cinemagoers are usually urged to switch off mobile phones when the lights dim for a movie, but a new app for the vision-impaired will transform their device and film-going experience.
Adelaide woman Sarah Savage is one of the first people to have downloaded the free app onto her phone.
She said her impairment meant she had never before been to the cinema, and she missed out as well when she and her husband watched TV or movies at home.
“I miss most of the detail, especially if there’s lots of darkness,” she said.
“Saying to my husband, ‘Who’s that? What’s that? What’s going on?’ can be very distracting for him as well as me, for not knowing what’s happening.”

The MovieReading app detects the point the film is at, via the phone’s microphone, and streams a detailed descriptive audio track, which tells the user what is appearing on the big screen.
“It’s really good because it tells you who’s left a room, what the people are doing in a room, if they’re drinking — or if they’re outside, what activity they’re doing,” she said.
“If it’s a murder-mystery, there might be a crucial clue you [otherwise] missed.”
The app extends a practice in some cinemas of having selected screenings where an audio explanation plays.
Shared experiences with friends important
Ms Savage said she was already a big user of online streaming services that gave users the option of switching on an audio description.
“I’ve used iView to watch some of the audio description programs,” she said.
But she said it was important to be able to do the same activities as her friends.
“If you’ve got a vision impairment, you still want to go out and do things with your friends and one of those things is going to the cinema,” she said.
Adelaide optometrist Luke Higgins agreed many vision-impaired people were keen cinemagoers who would benefit from the new app.

“They get the cinematic experience, they’re hearing the audio [amid] the cinematic feeling of being surrounded by people — they enjoy the popcorn and choc tops and everything like that,” he said.
Millions of Australians had some form of vision impairment, he said.
“We’re having a population that’s becoming more elderly — conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma have a much higher prevalence,” he said.
“People want to do everyday activities that people with perfect vision can do, so these sort of apps just increase accessibility to that movie experience, and any of those activities.”
