Drag Race Down Under season 4 to start filming in Auckland
Tumblr media
The Australian queens on season 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under will fly to New Zealand next week to start filming, dashing Aussies’ hopes of a move to Sydney.
Applications for the latest season of the show closed in late November. The season four queens have now been picked and their plane tickets are booked.
The Aussies will fly to Auckland on February 16 to join their New Zealand sisters, with RuPaul also returning as host.
It means filming of the fourth season will be done and dusted in two weeks as Ru is due back in New York by March 4.
That week, RuPaul is releasing his memoir The House of Hidden Meanings, with Ru heading out on a US book tour in March and April.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under will return to Australian streaming service Stan later in the year.

Drag Race Down Under ‘doing our queens a disservice’
Drag Race Down Under‘s return to New Zealand comes after very poor reviews have dogged the Australasian spinoff.
The show has filmed in Auckland ever since the first season during the pandemic in early 2021.
But now even some New Zealand queens want Australia to get a shot at producing the show, according to an Auckland drag whistleblower.
The anonymous drag queen wrote in a scathing op-ed in local outlet Express last October that the show’s “poor production decisions” are “not good enough” and “doing our queens a disservice on the world stage”.
“It’s hard to believe that if an Australian production company took over for season four, things wouldn’t improve,” the queen wrote.
Two Aussies are returning to Drag Race franchise
Last September, drag queen Isis Avis Loren was crowned the winner of season three of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under.
Isis was the first Australian queen to win the series, following two Kiwis, Kita Mean and Spankie Jackzon.
Next week, Sydney’s Hannah Conda – a runner-up on Drag Race Down Under season two – will return to the franchise on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs the World.
Season two of the UK-based series will premiere in Australia on Stan this Saturday (February 10).
Later this year, another standout Drag Race Down Under queen is tipped to return to the franchise’s new Global All-Stars spinoff.

Ninja Kiwi
Tumblr media
Background: Ninja Kiwi is a video games design company based in Auckland, New Zealand. Founded by the Harris brothers, Chris and Stephen in 2006. Over the years they have released over 60 games across Adobe, iOS, Android, Playstation, Nintnedo DS and more recently steam, where they have released Bloons Tower Defense 6 and Bloons TD battles 2. Their most well known for their Bloons tower defense franchise.  Ninja Kiwi has a virtual currency known as NK Coins; purchases of games and in-game purchases can be transacted using NK Coins. About eighteen months before its dissolution by its parent company, Mochi Media (another major gaming website) discontinued its virtual currency (Mochi Coins) and replaced it with Ninja Kiwi's virtual currency. Then on the  24th March 2021, Ninja Kiwi was obtained by the Modern Times Group. Development: Ninja kiwi used the Unity engine, unlike how I use Unreal engine, so where as unity focuses on C#, Unreal engine uses C++. Although both in the C language, C# and C++ are 2 different coding languages.  The development of the Bloons series has done exceptionally well over the years, increasing in players exceptionally well over the years, as it first started as an adobe flash game on browsers now moving onto the biggest platforms such as steam and the mobile stores. The game itself developing from 2 upgrade trees on towers to currently 3 upgrade paths, with a big upgrade that has been implemented in the new game at the end of the path. Towers now need xp to upgrade the paths which has never been used before in any previous bloons games. The gameplay itself has become alot more interactive, instead of replaying the same map over and over again there are now player and developer made challenges, where you can only use certain towers, have a certain amount of money you can use to be able to complete those challenges. There is also a skill tree that you develop through levelling up your account, unlocking upgrades to specific towers, life increase or xp increase for towers. This makes the game ultimately more replay able, as you can reset your skill tree and change how you play the game.

Lord of the Rings Amazon TV Series: Cast, Release Date and Everything to Know
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Amazon’s purportedly billion-dollar-budgeted Lord of the Rings TV series will take place LONG before the events of Peter Jackson’s movies. Setting the tone for this small screen return to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the first two episodes will be directed by J.A. Bayona, who helmed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
The Lord of the Rings TV series is set during Middle Earth’s Second Age—that’s thousands of years before Bilbo Baggins, Gollum or Aragorn ever existed! Moreover, the end of said age was a full millennium before the Wizards (Gandalf, Saruman, et al.) even arrived in Middle Earth, which makes the series a prequel in an epochal sense.
Amazon hopes the new Lord of the Rings TV show will be the next Game of Thrones, evidenced by its early Season 2 order. While COVID-19 temporarily halted its New Zealand production back in March 2020, progress ultimately resumed in late-September.
With that set, here’s everything you need to know about the project!
Lord of the Rings Amazon Cast
In the first bit of news on The Lord of the Rings television series in quite some time, Amazon Studios announced a plethora of new cast members. While we’re still not getting any official details on the show’s characters, the latest development proves that the project is a massive ensemble.
The CW
Cynthia Addai-Robinson leads this crop of newcomers.
The London-born, American-raised actress most recently fielded the role of Ramona Garrity on Starz series Power, but genre fans likely best know her as the CWverse’s version of Amanda Waller during Arrow’s brief Suicide Squad storyline, along with roles on USA’ Shooter and—in a setup somewhat close to LOTR—Starz’s Spartacus. She also had a notable role in 2016 actioner The Accountant.
Here’s the rest of the announced additions:
Maxim Baldry (Years and Years)—whose addition was reported by Collider back in October 2019—is now officially confirmed, joined by newcomer Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman (Top of the Lake), Anthony Crum (Krystal), Maxine Cunliffe (Power Rangers Megaforce), Trystan Gravelle (A Discovery of Witches), Sir Lenny Henry (Broadchurch), Thusitha Jayasundera (Humans), Fabian McCallum (You, Me and The Apocalypse), Simon Merrells (Knightfall), Geoff Morrell (Harrow), Peter Mullan (Westworld), Lloyd Owen (Cleaning Up), Augustus Prew (The Morning Show), Peter Tait (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), Alex Tarrant (Mean Mums), Leon Wadham (Power Rangers Beast Morphers), Benjamin Walker (Jessica Jones) and Sara Zwangobani (Home and Away).
Interestingly, the addition of Peter Tait marks the return of an alumnus from The Lord of the Rings films, since he was in Return of the King as Shagrat, the Uruk-hai who carried the venom-paralyzed, web-wrapped Frodo back to the Tower of Cirith Ungol before getting into a scrap (over Frodo’s Mithril shirt,) with the bossy Orc known as Gorbag. – In another Peter-related angle, the addition of Peter Mullan should delight fans of HBO’s Westworld who know him as James Delos and his “fidelity” tested robotic doppelgangers.
They join the following existing cast members:
HBO
Robert Aramayo, best known as Young Ned Stark on Game of Thrones, fields the lead role for which the departed Will Poulter was previously tapped. While little is known about the character, he was initially referred to as “Beldor,” and is said to be heroic. Poulter, who was cast back in September 2019, reportedly withdrew from the series over scheduling conflicts.
A24
Morfydd Clark has a lead role as a familiar character, as first reported by Variety. She will play a younger version of Galadriel, the ancient elven Lady of Lothlórien, famously played by Cate Blanchett in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and (in an appearance anachronistic to the novel) The Hobbit films.
Clark put in a dark performance as the star of excellent horror film Saint Maud, in which she played a piously deranged hospice nurse. She also recurred in Season 1 episodes of HBO’s His Dark Materials as the daemon-deprived Sister Clara, and fielded the major role of Mina in the recent Netflix/BBC Dracula miniseries. Clark also notably appeared in horror film Crawl, Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries Patrick Melrose and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
Galadriel, an ancient elf from Valinor who predates the First Age, famously used her long-honed magic powers to aid Frodo and the Fellowship in their journey during the Rings Trilogy. Yet, said powers happen to be rooted in her possession of Nenya, one of the three Rings of Power bestowed to the race of Elves; a trinket whose powers come with a caveat since, thanks to Sauron’s trickery, it is ultimately subordinate to the One Ring. Consequently, with the show’s Second Age setting (the era of the Rings of Power,) the inclusion of Galadriel seems to signal a story centered on Sauron’s deceitful claim to fame.
BBC
Markella Kavenagh was revealed back in July 2019 as the first cast member for the series, reportedly set to play a character named Tyra.
Kavenagh was most recently seen co-starring in Australian drama My First Summer and recurred on TV series The Gloaming for Australia’s Stan streaming service. Additionally, she’s no stranger to Amazon Prime originals, having been part of the cast of 2018’s Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Blumhouse Productions
Ema Horvath will play an unspecified character as a series regular, reported Deadline.
A relative newcomer, Horvath made her onscreen debut in the 2017 horror film, Like.Share.Follow, in which she appeared opposite Keiynan Lonsdale (The Flash’s Wally West), and moved on to field roles in 2019 horror films The Gallows Act II and The Mortuary Collection.
BBC
Joseph Mawle will play a villain, reported Variety, whose sources claim that the character will be named “Oren.”
The Oxford-born actor is best known as Benjen Stark on Game of Thrones, which he fielded in Season 1, and eventually returned as the show’s version of book character Coldhands in Season 7. He recently fielded BBC TV runs on drama MotherFatherSon, actioner Troy: Fall of a City and was memorable as a corrupt pugilist police inspector on Ripper Street. He’ll soon be seen in auteur director Terrence Malick’s developing film, The Last Planet.
Cinemax/Sky
Maxim Baldry will field an unspecified “significant” role, reported Collider.
The English actor most recently recurred on 2020’s Season 8 of Showtime’s Strike Back, having recently fielded a breakout performance on HBO television drama series Years and Years. He has been seen on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks, a 2013 guest spot on BBC’s Skins and, back in 2007 as a child, had a three-episode run on HBO’s Rome and was seen that same year in Mr. Bean’s Holiday.
Additional LOTR cast members include: Owain Arthur (A Confession), Nazanin Boniadi (Counterpart), Tom Budge (Bloom), Ismael Cruz Córdova (The Undoing), newcomer Tyroe Muhafidin, newcomer Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards (Wanderlust), Dylan Smith (I Am the Night), Charlie Vickers (Medici) and Daniel Weyman (Silent Witness). The addition of this group was announced back in January 2020 (just on the cusp of the pandemic,) during the Winter TCA Tour.
Lord of the Rings Amazon Release Date
Amazon’s Lord of the Rings doesn’t have a release date as of yet; a notion that was compounded by the pandemic production delay enacted back in March 2020. However, we do know that filming—specifically to complete the first two episodes—resumed back in late-September.
The series returned to the classic film franchise’s stomping grounds of New Zealand, specifically in Auckland, where production continues. The initial confirmation of that came from Amazon, which issued a statement from showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay:
“As we searched for the location in which we could bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-earth, we knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is a home to world-class sets, studios, and highly skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff. And we’re happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series based on stories from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.”
Lord of the Rings Amazon Crew
Juan Antonio (J.A.) Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Orphanage, The Impossible) directed the story-setting first two episodes. He is also serving as an executive producer, joined by his producing partner, Belén Atienza. “J.R.R. Tolkien created one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of all time, and as a lifelong fan it is an honor and a joy to join this amazing team,” Bayona said in a statement. “I can’t wait to take audiences around the world to Middle-earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never before seen story.”
Bryan Cogman, a winter-tested writer with Westeros work on his CV from Game of Thrones, is onboard the writing team as a consultant, as first reported by Variety. After starting as an assistant to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Cogman has since worn many hats on HBO’s Game of Thrones going back to the show’s first season, having written 11 episodes total—the most recent of which was Season 8’s pre-battle character study, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”—and served as a producer on several episodes, ascending to co-executive producer for the last two seasons. He’s also attached to the screenplay for Disney’s live-action adaptation of its 1963 Arthurian animated classic, The Sword in the Stone.
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are handling the day-to-day duties as showrunners for the series, having been brought onboard the project back in July 2018; well before Amazon divulged any official details on the series. The collaborative duo have relatively thin CVs, with work on the script to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond being their only non-Rings major entry.
Here’s the officially released list of the show’s creative team:
Executive producers Lindsey Weber (10 Cloverfield Lane), Bruce Richmond (Game of Thrones), Gene Kelly (Boardwalk Empire) and Sharon Tal Yguado; writer/executive producer Gennifer Hutchison (Breaking Bad); writer/executive producer Jason Cahill (The Sopranos) writer/executive producer Justin Doble (Stranger Things); consulting producers Bryan Cogman (Game of Thrones) and Stephany Folsom (Toy Story 4); producer Ron Ames (The Aviator); writer/co-producer Helen Shang (Hannibal), and writing consultant Glenise Mullins.
Lord of the Rings Amazon Story
Amazon has been teasing the plot for The Lord of the Rings series for a few years now. The officially released series-era map not only confirmed the show’s time period, stating, “Welcome to the Second Age,” but bore another bountiful clue: the five-pointed-star-shaped southwest island kingdom of Númenor. An ancient kingdom of Men with long lifespans, Númenor flourished throughout much of the Second Age until the initial incursions of Sauron, which eventually led to the kingdom’s legendary fall (which culminated with the entire island sinking into the sea,) and King Elendil’s arrival on the mainland, where he eventually founded the kingdom of Gondor.
Welcome to the Second Age: https://t.co/Tamd0oRgTw
— The Lord of the Rings on Prime (@LOTRonPrime) March 7, 2019
Given Amazon’s subsequent teases, which recall tropes connected to the Ring of Power, one might further deduce that the Lord of the Rings series will specifically chronicle the epoch’s mythology-setting events. Pertinently, the sporadically posted lines in the teasers recall the Second Age story in which Sauron deceived the kingdoms of Elves, Men, and Dwarves with rings of power that he secretly controlled with the One Ring; a story famously told in The Fellowship of the Ring film prologue by Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel (a character played on this series by Markella Kavenagh).
We could also take this to mean that the Lord of the Rings TV show might showcase the formation of Gondor and the era in which Sauron’s insidious plot first came to a head; events that were briefly chronicled in Tolkien’s posthumously-published quasi-Biblical Middle Earth chronicle, The Silmarillion, specifically in the section titled “Akallabêth.”
Amazon Prime Video narrowed down the show’s time period by provocatively posting maps of Middle Earth, including downloadable versions hosted on the main Amazon site. Having started by posting a label-less version of the Middle Earth map, Amazon would incrementally reveal things by updating the map with land labels, which provided valuable clues about the show’s time setting. The first major revelation came in February 2019 with the release of a map containing a name that’s archaic to the familiar era of the Third Age, in which The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings novels and Peter Jackson-directed films take place.
New Line Cinema
The name on the map in question was “Calenardhon,” which is the ancient original name of the pastoral plains of the region that we know as the kingdom of Rohan (founded in 2510 in the Third Age), which we saw on magnificent display in the Rings Trilogy’s 2002 middle act, The Two Towers.
Additionally, the familiar sight to Rohan’s south, the great kingdom of Gondor, was nowhere to be seen on the map. This was a crucial clue, since Gondor (along with Northern Kingdom Arnor,) was founded by King Elendil and his sons during the Second Age of Middle Earth in 3320, setting up a climactic confrontation in 3441 between “The Last Alliance of Elves and Men” against Sauron and his evil army from Mordor—again, as depicted in the Fellowship prologue.
Consequently, with the Lord of the Rings series confirmed to take place in the Second Age, speculation can begin on how it might fill story gaps of the first war over the One Ring, potentially showcasing movie prologue characters like King Elendil, his son and eventual One Ring-owner, Isildur, as well as the powerful high-born Elven king, Gil-galad. Moreover, it appears that we might finally get to see Sauron himself as an actual character, rather than a giant irritated flaming eye!

That’s all we know about Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series. We, along with the franchise’s legion of fans, anxiously await any update that comes our way.

New Zealand! Day 0: Just An Ocean Away
Date of Reference: Friday, June 8, 2018
Memphis International Airport (MEM) is growing to be my favorite airport. See, what was once a hub for the now defunct Northwest Airlines has now lost significant traffic (and thereby passengers) running through the modestly sized facility. As a result of all of this, I was able to park my car, check in, walk through the security checkpoint, and find my gate in about 10 minutes. Let's see anyone do that at ORD or LAX!
MEM is currently undergoing a renovation that will effectively downsize the airport and update the concourses with more modern amenities. The New York Times recently wrote in more detail on the current status of Memphis' humble airport recently. I'll leave a link to that article and MEM's ongoing renovation intentions below, respectively:

Tumblr media
New Zealand is the first nation to greet the day on the other side of the International Date Line. It is 15 hours ahead of US Central Daylight time (the time zone I live and work in.) My route to New Zealand takes me from Memphis to Houston, which is just over an hour flight. From Houston, it takes 15 hours to fly direct to Auckland, New Zealand. Currently, the Houston, TX, USA to Auckland, NZ route is the 7th longest flight in the world. Easy as pie! I can do that in my sleep... hopefully! Maybe I will be able to count the thousands of New Zealand sheep in my head as an attempt at sleep (more on New Zealand agriculture later…) Jet lag was something I definitely had to manage throughout the week.
I arrived to the airport a few hours before my 7 PM flight. Coming direct from work has its advantages in beating the 5 o'clock rush on the I-240 loop. While I awaited my flight from Memphis to Houston, I found some fun local paintings from students across the various high schools around the Memphis metro area.
The painting below was a fun fusion of the recognizable template of Egyptian hieroglyphs (a nod to Memphis, Egypt) while enfusing the many treasures Memphis, TN has to offer. See if you can find all the images that are associated with Memphis, TN! (I’ll put some details of images and locations underneath the picture)
Tumblr media
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Moving around the picture clockwise, starting with bottom left:
1.The Pyramid - Located in downtown Memphis, the Pyramid used to be a basketball coliseum and concert venue. After a few years sitting vacant as a result of the arrival of the newer FedEx Forum just off of Beale Street, Bass Pro Shops (a hunting and outdoor apparel department store) has moved in, converting this icon into a store, restaurant, bowling alley, hotel, duck museum, and skyline/Mississippi River observation deck, which is accessible by the largest free-standing elevator in the US.
2. Memphis Grizzlies Logo - The logo for the Memphis Grizzlies, the city's own NBA franchise.
3. Tiger - the mascot of the University of Memphis.
4. Corky’s BBQ logo - Corky’s is a popular regional franchise restaurant known for their fall-off-the-bone dry rub pork ribs.Seeing the pig in the chef’s hat is almost as synonymous as the wafting smell of smoked meat and charcoal.
5. Memphis In May International Festival Logo - Memphis In May is a month long festival of music, BBQ, and other various arts. It is Memphis’ largest event of the year, drawing several thousands of people into the city throughout its duration.
6. M - in reference to both the City and University of Memphis.
7. Gibson’s Donuts Logo - a highly popular local donut restaurant that's notorious across Memphis and is recognized by this logo.
8. Gibson Guitar - Memphis is the home of the famous Gibson Guitar company, where countless musicians have honed their craft strumming the smooth strings of this legendary instrument, assembled right here.
9. Music notes - Reference to Memphis as the home of the Blues and Rock and Roll (both BB King and Elvis Presley got their first big break recording at the Memphis studios).
10. Pharoah Elvis- I found this one very clever, as the pharaoh (king) in this painting depicts the “King of Rock and Roll”, Elvis Presley. His home, Graceland, can still to this day be visited in Memphis.
11. Memphis Red Bird Logo - Memphis is also home to a minor league baseball team known as the Redbirds. It’s an excellent chance to see some great talent play, many of whom go on to play in the Major Leagues. The Redbirds are also a scouting team for the MLB Franchise, St. Louis Cardinals.
12. Stax Museum Logo - While Memphis has many great stories of Rock and the Blues, it also has a rich history with Soul. Many of the hits found in the Soul genre were recorded at the Stax recording studio. While the studio is still in operation, it also functions as a well-curated museum.
13. The M Bridge - The M bridge is an icon of the downtown Memphis cityscape. It spans the entire length of the Mississippi River, connecting West Memphis, Arkansas to downtown Memphis, TN.
Tumblr media
I arrived in Houston just in time to transfer to my 10:30 PM flight to Auckland. I was glad the flight was at night, as this encouraged me to get some much needed rest. Beyond the horizon, waiting for me on the other side of the world was a multitude of adventures I will certainly remember the rest of my life…
Stay tuned to this feed for more posts regarding my adventures in New Zealand! It was a phenomenal trip, and I look forward to sharing more stories and images of that beautiful place with you soon!

Lord of the Rings Amazon TV Series: Cast, Release Date and Everything to Know
https://ift.tt/3l7ar2q
Amazon’s purportedly billion-dollar-budgeted Lord of the Rings TV series will take place LONG before (as in thousands of years before) the events of Peter Jackson’s movies.
While COVID-19 would temporarily halt its New Zealand production back in March 2020, progress ultimately resumed in late-September.
With that set, here’s everything you need to know about the project!
Lord of the Rings Amazon Cast
You can read more about Aramayo’s casting right here.
A24
Morfydd Clark has a lead role as a familiar character, as first reported by Variety. She will play a younger version of Galadriel, the ancient elven Lady of Lothlórien, famously played by Cate Blanchett in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and (in a appearance anachronistic to the novel,) The Hobbit films. Clark put in a dark performance as the star of last year’s horror film, Saint Maud, in which she played a piously deranged hospice nurse.
BBC
Joseph Mawle will play a villain, reported Variety, whose sources claim that the character will be named “Oren.” The Oxford-born actor is best known as Benjen Stark on Game of Thrones, which he fielded in Season 1, and eventually returned as the show’s version of book character Coldhands in Season 7.
The rest of the ensemble consists of Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers and Daniel Weyman.

IHG Signs First voco Hotel in New Zealand
Tumblr media
IHG has signed a franchise agreement with Pro-invest that will see the first voco hotel in New Zealand open in Auckland in 2021. Located in the very heart of Auckland’s city centre, on the corner of Albert and Wyndham Street, the property will be dual-branded, as the 200-room voco Auckland City Centre will share the site with the 294-room Holiday Inn Express Auckland City Centre. The two hotels will have separate branding and guest entrances, but will share facilities.
Tumblr media
Ronald Barrott, CEO of Pro-invest, said, “We are extremely excited to have the honour of opening New Zealand’s first voco. Such an iconic address demands a great brand, and when IHG first launched voco in 2018, its sustainability focus really struck a chord with me and I realised that it was a perfect fit for us. I’m so excited to add voco to our portfolio of hotels, complementing our growing estate of Holiday Inn Express hotels in New Zealand and Australia, in partnership with IHG.” The signing of voco Auckland City Centre continues the rapid growth of the brand since it launched in June 2018, complementing voco hotels in Australia’s Gold Coast, Yarra Valley, Hunter Valley, Melbourne and Sydney. IHG currently has 51 hotels operating under four brands in Australasia, including: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, voco and Holiday Inn Express, with another 35 in the pipeline, including Hotel Indigo. Super Rugby: Blues CEO Michael Redman to step down

Super Rugby: Blues CEO Michael Redman to step down
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blues chief executive Michael Redman, fresh off securing perhaps his biggest signing in All Black Beauden Barrett, is stepping down after six years in the role.
Redman joined the Blues in October 2013 and has led the Auckland franchise through its transition from a part-time operation within a provincial union to a fully professional franchise employing 19 full-time staff and with world class facilities.
“From the outset I initially envisaged five seasons but it was vitally important to provide stable leadership for our staff and sponsors during this last 12 months of unprecedented shareholder, governance and coaching changes,” Redman said.
“But I believe it is now important the Blues get the opportunity to appoint someone to lead the club for the next five-plus years and that is not me.”
“Signing Barrett was my last play,” he added.
Redman said not achieving on-field success has been deeply frustrating but he leaves the club having helped assemble a coaching group as good as any in Super Rugby with world class support staff.
“Now we have just signed one of the best players in the world. We have fantastic staff and I know success is just around the corner.”
Board Chair Don Mackinnon thanked Redman for his six years of dedicated, professional leadership.
“Despite facing numerous challenges, Michael has managed to grow our commercial revenue and oversee our move to a stunning facility that will set the Club up for decades to come. He has developed a strong team, worked incredibly hard and has led with integrity and intelligence. We thank him for all he has done. Michael will always be part of the Blues family.”
New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew praised Redman for his contribution to the Blues and NZ Rugby.
“Michael can be very satisfied with what he has achieved at the Blues having steered the organisation through some challenging periods as it matured into an independent Super Rugby club.
“He has made significant contributions to rugby from his work on Collective Employment Agreements, to innovations in commercial and player contracting, and establishing a world class base for the Club at Epsom. That base, which sees the commercial and administration team working alongside the High-Performance group, coaches and team, has helped to underline a strong Blues culture and identity.
“While we hope Michael is not completely lost to rugby, we wish him well in his next ventures.”
Redman will leave the club in September after completing the 2019 season review and the 2020 budget.
“The big rocks are in place for next season both on and off the field. We have some exciting announcements regarding our 2020 draw and Auckland Rugby are using our training facility starting in a few weeks. So, someone can come in and have time to get their feet under the desk.”
Redman acknowledged the leadership of former and current chairs Tony Carter and Don Mackinnon.
“I have been very fortunate to work for two outstanding Chairs in Tony and Don and I thank them sincerely for their support and advice over the years.
“I will always be a Blues fan.”
Mackinnon confirmed the process to recruit a new CEO would begin immediately.

Makers' names: Zara, Meg, and Annie-rose Collins
Petition sheet number: 152
Person honouring: Mary Flora Rigg
Relationship to makers: Unknown
When Mary signed the 1893 petition, she was 37, and an experienced nurse with a sister and mother who were very involved in the fight for suffrage and the protection of women and children.
Mary Flora Rigg was born in 1856 in Sydney, to parents Elizabeth Bryan and Charles Rigg. She was the second-eldest of 11 children. Her parents had emigrated from Ireland and England but married in Tasmania in 1853. Charles was a Methodist minister and as a result the family moved around a lot. Eventually they settled in Otago.
At the time that she signed the petition, Mary was living on Cargill St in Dunedin with her mother and her sister, Rosa Rigg, and was working as a nurse. Another sister, Emily Rigg, was nearby in George St – she was also a nurse and was involved in the Women’s Franchise League and the Society for the Protection of Women and Children.
Elizabeth Rigg [the mother] had signed the 1892 petition seeking women's suffrage. She was also a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Women’s Franchise League.
Mary and Rosa signed the 1893 petition twice – their names appear on both sheet 152 and sheet 174.
In 1903 Mary made a claim against the City Corporation for underpaying her. She had been working as matron at the Caversham Immigration Barracks Hospital (scarlet fever hospital).
Mary never married. Following the death of her mother in 1918, she moved to Auckland, where her sisters both lived.
Mary died in the Auckland Infirmary in Epsom in May 1940, aged 84.

Other Thoughts on Spider-Man Homecoming
The third cinematic iteration of Spider-Man gives us a hero who lives in the shadow of franchise giants. As we discussed on the podcast, the legacy of Uncle Ben and the value of a Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man are virtually absent here. Instead Peter Parker spends his days awaiting the validation of old billionaire Tony Stark, and disgruntled at what little good he can do. He is entirely dependent on technological gifts from Iron Man for capability and recognition. His intellectual prowess serves only to win some academic trivia night, and his ability to discover and invent is irrelevant. He seeks not to do good or make good for the sake of those things but to  gain the approval of an old rich man. He has no agency for anything else.
Michael Keaton’s Diesel Punk Bird Guy, in contrast, is building an empire. Foiled by a bureaucracy that favours the old money, he sets out to forge a life for himself and his family in the new world afforded by constant alien invasion and villainy. Granted he sells weapons to criminals-which is why he’s the villain-, but he adapts to and thrives in a place that beguiles others, and all for the people he loves.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is only the latest in a long series of superhero films about passive heroes and active villains. General Zod’s drive to preserve Krypton and Lex Luthor’s existential angst are more compelling than whatever the sad men are down about in the first two DCEU films. Helmut Zemo’s ability to bring chaos to the Avengers is far more startling than Tony Stark being upset by Alfre Woodard. Hell, even wobbly-armed Cara Delevigne’s drive for revenge is more interesting than the Suicide Squad’s constant indecision.
There’s an interesting dynamic here. These heroes are uniformly conservative in the simplest sense of the word; they seek to protect what is rather than building something new. When they do try to move the human race forward it backfires spectacularly- witness the results of Tony Starks Ultron project. Villains in contrast are no longer the cackling monsters of yesteryear. The drive for narrative complexity imbues them with some kind of grounded motive, which is frequently the only interesting idea in these films. Of course, all too often the drive to bring in all four quadrants means the climax must constitute a spectacular fight, and so no discussion- and thus no repudiation- of their ethos takes place.
It’s worth noting that there is a fine line to walk here. Nolan’s Dark Knight is hardly seeking to preserve the entrenched corruption in Gotham, and attempts to drive the people of the city towards a more just and safe world. In doing so, he verges on the authoritarian. To go too far from the hero as preserver of the status quo risks aggrandising the dictatorial.
It’s also worth noting that sometimes the ‘more interesting’ villain is only so because they’re the only one doing anything on screen. Witness 1968’s Thunderbird 6, in which the Black Phantom is far more engaging to watch not because of what he is trying to do but because he’s simply doing more than hanging around sipping cocktails on an airship or needling Brains about building a new Thunderbird. In this case the villain isn’t driving the narrative, he is the narrative.
But to return to more abstract matters. Spider-Man: Homecoming is something of a reckoning for superhero movies. It’s the third time around, it assumes we already know the basics: spider bite, powers, dead uncle. It’s great conceit is our hero’s envy for all the other heroes. And in doing so- in forgoing the basics of this iconic hero in favour of a compelling villain and some hero worship- it turns on the lights behind the half-silvered mirror that film holds to society. Which of these characters- the self-made bird guy family man or the kid who wants to be in with the gods of the world- most resembles what the world in general and America in particular looks for in an upstanding citizen, the kind who might be fit for public office? And yet which do we root for?
There’s a old old trend at play here. In the eighties, when everyone wanted to get rich, the movies told us that money was less than family, so that the have-nots might feel better about their lacklustre wealth (a strategy that surely made some people very rich). In the 2010s, when greater caution and responsibility was demanded of those institutions that had led to the GFC, we have lionised the wolves and the short sellers, such that we might be comforted that at least someone made a buck. So when individualism is ascendant, is it any wonder that the hero wants nothing more than to be one of the cool kids? Does that mean it is right to cast yourself in the image of others?
Tim
P.S I saw this at a screening organized by Auckland comic book shop Heroes For Sale. If you’re here you should totally get in on these screenings. $15 ($10 if you have a subscription at the shop) gets you into the Silvia Park X-Treme screen with a bunch of cool nerds and people who dress up get to sit in the Premier lounge.

The Rogues Rant #239
Welcome to The Rogues Rant, an occasional look at all things Rugby
Finally some good news for Rugby fans. Foxtel have announced that Super Rugby will return to our TV screens as of Saturday June 13 with the New Zealand Super Rugby Aotearoa match between the Highlanders and the Chiefs at Dunedin. With New Zealand lifting crowd restrictions, huge crowds are expected for this match and the already sold out Blues V Hurricanes match at Eden Park, Auckland on Sunday 14th. The games are the first of the Kiwi tournament involving all five of the NZ Super Rugby franchises. With a deal being reached between Rugby Australia and Foxtel for TV coverage the Super Rugby AU tournament will kick off on Friday 3rd July. Queensland Reds will host the Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night with the Brumbies and Rebels to meet the next night in Canberra. While the New Zealanders will be cheered on by their loyal fans, the Aussie matches will be played without spectators with Coronavirus restrictions still in place at this stage. Bring it on!
On the international front the England Rugby Premiership will resume on August 15 with nine rounds remaining to complete their interrupted season. World Rugby has also been working on a new format for the 2021 International Season. At present it looks likely that a new approach will be taken which will impact on all levels of senior Rugby. The likely format will see the Southern Hemisphere Rugby Championship Tests played during February and March next year followed by Super Rugby AU and Club Rugby at all levels to be played from April through to September. The Australian home Test series against Northern Hemisphere sides will be played during October followed by the Wallabies Northern Hemisphere tours in November. It’s a new format which is needed as it appears that the old Super Rugby format is well and truly buried with South Africa clearly heading towards a European involvement. There is still a lot of work needed to come up with a workable and efficient structure for Club and Super Rugby in Australia. If we are to see the Wallabies performances improve and Australian Rugby climb back up the International ratings, then a new and progressive development program has to be implemented by Rugby Australia, and soon.
Some sad news this week with the passing of Terry Troy recently. Terry was heavily involved with the development of the Tech Waratahs Junior Club in the late 1990’s which laid the foundation for the success of the Tech Tahs Senior club throughout the “Naughties”. Terry also contributed strongly to the administration of the successful Illawarrior Senior and Colts squads of 2005. After moving to the Southern Highlands, Terry also contributed to Bowral Rugby Club over the years and was a regular at Eridge Park recently enjoying the resurgence of the famous club. Rest in Peace Terry Troy.
A very important IDRU Board meeting is sitting down as this column goes to air. We are pretty much at crunch time now if we are going to see any local rugby played in 2020. With there still so much indecision surrounding the whole Coronavirus situation I can only see one decision eventually being made, but when?  See you in 2021.
All opinions offered in this column are the opinion of the author. They should not be considered to represent the views of the IDRU.

Two changes for Vodacom Bulls against Blues
Vodacom Bulls coach, Pote Human, named Ivan van Zyl at scrumhalf and flanker Marco van Staden in his starting team for Friday’s Vodacom Super Rugby clash against the Blues at Eden Park in Auckland.
Van Zyl takes over from Andre Warner and Van Staden comes in at flank for Paul Schoeman, who moves to no8 in place of Duane Vermeulen.
The Springbok no8 returned to South Africa as part of the SA Rugby agreement with contracted Springboks and their franchises. Jason Jenkins will don the blue jersey for the 50th time.
According to Human, they need to start well against the home side, who have won 11 of their 12 home games against the Vodacom Bulls. “We need to get a good start and sustain that throughout the match. They have some quality players, but the real test will be in the set-pieces. The Blues have the best scrum success rate (97%) in the competition, so that will be a critical area for us.”
With Handré Pollard and Duane Vermeulen out, Burger Odendaal will take over the captaincy.
The midfielder said they have clear objectives in this match. “We are the underdogs, no doubt about that. That is good for us, as we can only concentrate on our own game and that we want to achieve. This will have to be very clinical performance from us. If not, it will be a long evening.”
The team is:
15. Warrick Gelant (37, 60) 14. Cornal Hendricks (37, 60) 13. Johnny Kotze (43, 45) 12. Burger Odendaal (c; 53, 30) 11. Rosko Spekman (10, 25) 10. Manie Libbok (15, 38) 9. Ivan van Zyl (27, 5) 8. Paul Schoeman (31, 35) 7. Hanro Liebenberg (40, 25) 6. Marco van Staden (22, 15) 5. RG Snyman (45, 10) 4. Jason Jenkins (49, 35) 3. Trevor Nyakane (104, 15) 2. Schalk Brits (72, 20) 1. Lizo Gqoboka (50, 15)
Replacements: 16. Jaco Visagie (43, 5) 17. Simphiwe Matanzima (13, 5) 18. Wiehahn Herbst (46, 0) 19. Jannes Kirsten (29, 10) 20. Ruan Steenkamp (17, 0) 21. Andre Warner (17, 15) 22. JT Jackson (2, 0) 23. Divan Rossouw (23, 15)
