The Orphan Experiments

Chapter 1

Time for a new multi-part story! Updates on this one will be every Wednesday and Friday similar to the last one. Once again, this is not the newest story in terms of how recently it was written, but it has, like the others, been under continual editing. I think this is one of my favourites because I really the characters.

I’m going to try out something new and put little excerpts from the chapter at the top above the Read-More and see how that works.

Excerpt: “Now I need to make sure you understand why exactly these kids live here instead of with other foster parents." Mr. Kleary nodded. "They are problem children, very troubled. They all have been kicked out of multiple homes and schools. They don't get along well with anyone and certainly not each other. What these children need is a heavy hand, do you understand?"

The house was large and foreboding; three stories high and very plain. The dull lawn and perfect off-white paint seemingly screamed that nothing good happens there. A young man with messy hair stood on the front porch, biting his lip. Shortly after he knocked the door was opened by a girl with curly black hair. She stared at him, deep brown eyes making quick judgments of the tie on his neck. The man smiled.

"Hello!" He bent a little to get more on eye level with the small girl. "My name is James Kleary, may I come in?" The girl said nothing in response. "I'm to be your new skills teacher here, it's very nice to meet you." The man put out his hand as if to shake the girl's. At this motion she flinched and ran up the stairs against the right wall of the entryway. Mr. Kleary stood awkwardly for a moment before calling out the name he had made note of before he came and bracing himself to meet the kind of woman he expected to run a place like this. A clattering of footsteps was heard from a room down the hall. A stout woman, easily in her fifties, hurried to the door; her face was kind as she invited him in. The lady led him down the hall and into a bright kitchen. The cheerful atmosphere contrasted to the rest of the house and did a great deal to ease Mr. Kleary's nerves.

"Okay, so here are m-" Mr. Kleary began to pull out his resume but was quickly interrupted by the lady.

"When can you start?" She was buzzing about, pulling things out of cupboards and putting things away, seemingly randomly.

"But you haven't even seen-”

"Doesn't matter! These children just need someone to put up with them for some time during the day. Lord knows I can't do it on my own all the time. The old skills teacher, he was tough but this batch is bad." She made a judgmental sound. "Those savages got the man in the hospital this time."

"Oh my," Mr. Kleary responded less to what the lady had said but more how she had said it. She talked about the children as if they weren't human beings. "I'll start immediately if you'll have me."

"Oh good, good! My name is Ms. Singer." She smiled tautly and extended a hand for him to shake. "I am the homeowner and head caretaker of the children here. I do all the cooking, cleaning and disciplining." She tossed a wooden spoon into the drawer and began to walk off. Mr. Kleary followed silently as Ms. Singer gave him a quick tour of the house. It had a simple layout with dull furniture and duller walls, just a standard four-bedroom home with three washrooms and a study. The children shared rooms; two girls in one and two boys in another. Ms. Singer lived in the master bedroom and the adjoining washroom was all hers. The final bedroom was small and unkempt with a tiny ensuite.

"This will be your room. You'll spend nights here but the rest of your time will be spent with the children." She pulled the door closed as they left. "You will teach in the study; history, English, math, all the usual subjects, taught following a strict curriculum. You will show up to meals on time, you will report any infractions to me immediately, no matter how minor. Are you even listening to me?"

"Huh? Oh, yes, definitely." He had zoned out entirely before they had even entered the bedroom. "Can I meet the kids now?"

“I suppose." The judgmental tone had crept back into Ms. Singer's voice. She led him to a living room where four kids were watching cartoons and looking bored. She stopped before she entered the room. "These are the kids. Now I need to make sure you understand why exactly these kids live here instead of with other foster parents." Mr. Kleary nodded. "They are problem children, very troubled. They all have been kicked out of multiple homes and schools. They don't get along well with anyone and certainly not each other. What these children need is a heavy hand, do you understand?"

"Loud and clear, Ms. Singer, or may I call you Andrea?" Mr. Kleary smiled.

"No, you may not." Her curt response made Mr. Kleary flinch a little. "These children need to learn respect so under no circumstances should they think of you or me as anything other than Ms. Singer and Mr. Kleary." She looked at him as though talking to one of the children of whom she thought so lowly. He nodded quickly. He was starting to doubt his choice in going to that house, but these children obviously needed someone who actually cared.

"The one in the corner, the little Mexican who answered the door when you knocked, her name is Rosa Falto, 10 years old, though she will not shut up about her birthday next week. She is a major flight risk, ran away from all the homes she's been in within the first few weeks. She’s scared of the world and incredibly shy but easily the most tolerable of the children. The girl laying on the floor is Willow Harrington, 12 years old. She is attention craving and overly emotional. She broke the nose and arm of the owner of her last home because he tried to comb out that Afro of hers. The ginger boy is Jacob O'Neil, 12 years old. He is a thief and a liar who lives to cause mischief. He was responsible for the prank that put their old skills teacher in the hospital. The little black boy is Tanner Cole, 11 years old. He claims to hate everyone and acts like it too. He is an angry child who will stay silent until it all comes out screaming." Ms. Singer gestured inside. "Now it's time for you to meet the devils."

The children all turned and watched silently as Mr. Kleary entered the room. He could tell by their faces that they had heard everything Ms. Singer had to say and that they had heard worse before. After an awkward moment of silence, the children went back to watching their cartoons and seemed to pretend that Mr. Kleary wasn't even there. Mr. Kleary shot a look back at the doorway, smiling and shooing Ms. Singer away. She sighed and left, her footsteps receding to the kitchen. As soon as she was out of sight Mr. Kleary sighed and plopped into an empty spot on the couch. The boys, on either side of him, looked shocked and kind of afraid.

"Man, she's got a stick up her ass, doesn't she?" Mr. Kleary said to Tanner. "A stick so far up it hits her brain!" The children laughed slightly in surprise, disbelief on their faces. Except for Rosa, she just stared with wide eyes.

It took a while but each of the children eventually came to enjoy Mr. Kleary's antics. He was the strangest and happiest adult any of them had ever met. He pulled pranks on them as often as they tried to pull any on him and his lessons were taught in badly sung songs or horribly drawn cartoons; he drove Ms. Singer up the walls. The children loved it and Mr. Kleary loved the children. He came to understand them as so much more than Ms. Singer had made them out to be. Rosa was brilliant, Tanner wanted to be an artist, Willow wanted to play hockey, Jacob was an aspiring stand-up comedian. Each of the children was able to shine and every time they did Mr. Kleary was filled with pride. His strange ways even seemed to brighten Ms. Singer at times and she began to give him some leeway with how he taught. Though this was partly because she knew he would ignore the rules anyway.

One day, rain and a boring history lesson had the children complaining and fidgeting in their seats; it gave Mr. Kleary an idea.

"Ms. Singer!" Mr. Kleary half shouted as he ran down the hall, the children staring after him in confusion. "Ms. Singer, I had an idea!"

"Good lord, Mr. Kleary how many times must I tell you not to run?" Ms. Singer stepped out of the kitchen, her polka dot broom in hand. "You are going to fall and break something."

"It's a dreadful day." Mr. Kleary was smiling and bouncing slightly as he talked; standing far too close to her.

"I guess..." A bit of worry crossed her face. "What is it that you want?"

"I want to go to the museum!" Mr. Kleary put a hand on her shoulder. "I have a friend who is in charge of the guided tours there. If I call her she can arrange something by the time we get there!"

"What does a dumb museum have to do with it being a dreadful day?" Tanner asked, alerting the adults that the children had snuck down the hall.

"Dreadful days are museum days, of course!" Mr. Kleary said it as if it were obvious. "Do you want to come, Ms. Singer? It'll be fun!" He continued to bounce slightly.

"No, thank you." She looked at her watch. "There's too much to be done around here." She turned back towards the kitchen. "Be safe and don't do anything stupid."

"She said yes!" Mr. Kleary was halfway up the stairs before he paused to look back at the children. "What are you waiting for? We're going to the museum!" The children ran after him.

"Hello and welcome to the Richardson Street Museum. We first opened our doors to the public in 1962 with only..." the tour guide droned on in an unenthused voice.

"Don't bother with the script, we won't be listening." Mr. Kleary smiled as he slid a small bottle back into his shoulder bag. "If you just lead us around and tell us some cool facts every once in awhile we'll be happy." And so it went on like that, the children ran ahead and pointed to cool things and the guide seemed much happier to say the things he found fascinating. Mr. Kleary ran about with the children at times, but mostly he followed along, walking and chatting with the tour guide. After close to three hours, the tour guide stopped Mr. Kleary for a second.

"Melissa, the guide coordinator, told me I should take you guys up to where we're storing the exhibit that's gonna be set up soon." The guide seemed excited. "Well, she said I could as a favour to you if your group was well behaved. It's really important that they don't touch anything up there."

"Of course. I promise you they'll be the best of any children you've ever seen." A smile grew on Mr. Kleary's face. When he called them, the kids quickly came over and stood attentively as Mr. Kleary explained where they were going. “Nothing there will be behind glass yet, so you have to be very careful not to touch it, okay?"

"What's the new exhibit about?" Jacob asked as the others nodded.

"It's about Native art and technology from before the Europeans came." The tour guide replied quietly. "You'll be the first to see it who doesn't work here." This was met with quiet excitement. The guide led them over to the back corner of the museum where there was a second, older styled elevator marked staff only. The guide put his arm out, blocking the door until everyone was in. He stepped in after them and pressed a button with no marking on it. Suddenly, something put Mr. Kleary's nerves on edge, something wasn't right. He looked to the children, they were all there. He looked back to the guide; when he wasn't looking the guide had pulled a mask of some sort over his mouth and nose. Mr. Kleary shouted for the children as he whipped around to face them, but before he could he fell to the floor and everything faded to black.

ELINOVAS' ANGELS [inspired by VICTORIA SECRET ANGELS] are a group of girls who are known for empowering women and they are the girls of NCT.

Originally, it was a brand group for supermodels but the daughter of the founders' company bought the name for various brandings.

Introducing 2/3 of ELINOVAS' ANGELS who are WAYV's SOULMATES. Everyone in ELINOVAS' ANGELS have strong bonds with each other but these girls are known for having each others' back.

there's a reason why she is mostly guarded, and that's because it's because of her tragic childhood - she had an older sister but she was shoot by the head from protecting her younger sister, which is herself

since then she is always on a look-out due to her work too

started to use her trauma as work and that's how she became a bodyguard

which leads to meeting Kun and the others (they were slightly stubborn and mean to her at first but thanks to Kun, they kind of slowly began to accept her)

Kun is everything to her, it was as if she depended Kun on her closed-off emotions, that he had to sit down with WAYV at first to find solutions for her and then sat down with her (the boys understood the assignment)

used to be detached but as she begins her journey with WAYV, she kind of learn from the boys' on how to involve herself with others (in a good way), helping the others with the knowledge she has

she even took a bullet for Kun and that's how she realized she is in love with him and it was so obvious (she was even more shook that Kun confessed to her and yeah, let's just say they were in their own world)

meeting the Elinovas Sisters has made her more empathetic and with just a week of spending time with each other, they treated her as a sister

and thanks to the Elinovas Sisters as they introduced her to the other Elinovas Angels girls, she realized that DNA doesn't make a family

it was really a mess that day but she remembered being in one of the rooms in Ten's club and no one is in the room, so she decided to make a exit since she was all fine but as soon as she took a turn, she was met by Ten and she swore she could see Ten's eyes widened twice (the atmosphere was weird as well as what she felt, and so she decided to walk passed him - not knowing that he was the one who saved her)

fast forward to a few months with him trying to get close to her and soon turns into a weird tension, and one fine night became a night where both her and Ten ended up in one of Taeyong's hotel (yes, they slept together as in SmEXy)

and their relationship kind of grew from there - he was clingy, sweet, kind of funny and adventurous (she didn't know what they were at that point, friends don't make out with each other unless they were fwb but she knew they were more than that since they told each other regarding their personal lives)

when she thought that she had something special with him, it all came crashing down when she saw him with a girl from a rival group of Elinovas Angels being all close and personal (what's worse she had to see them make-out and shit, poor Alyona)

damn homegirl went pissed that she had to bail out of the event and she NEVER exits out of events early (let's just say she personally drove herself to the Elinovas Angels mansion and cried her hearts out, also to see Lucas and that's when she finds out about another side of Ten according to Lucas)

definitely a red-flag to her from what Lucas said (homeboy said Ten has different girls every week but according to Lucas and the other WAYV members, he actually talked about Alyona to them, saying positive stuff about her which Ten had never done before which was talking about the girls he hangout with)

every time she tries to avoid Ten, she keeps on seeing him as if they were fated to be together and one day they had a one to one talk which made Ten chase after her, realizing that he loves her and weirdly, she can't seem to stay away from him too

only the Elinovas Angels knows this but she is a good actor - she knows how to act, for example if she is extremely angry or extremely sad - bro she didn't even cry, she just covers it with a smile (only god knows how emotional she is)

she tends to hide her true feelings

and that incident made both of them close and she had to tell Lucas that she is Jackson's crazy cousin that everyone talks/knows about

when she says she knows Lucas, she knows about Lucas's work and what he does during tasks that was given by his own bosses

she was surprised that Lucas is actually a gentleman although he flirts a lot, yet he is respectful to her

he didn't even touch her or anything even when he accidentally made skin contact, he would jump like afar in surprise (he is a very funny guy)

her brother, Chani, is also a member of SF9 who is also friends with NCT (she didn't know much but she heard they had work together)

is very close with her brother although she is adopted (he kind of tells her everything, what had happened both bad and good and she would tell him any interesting events that had happened between her and her fans)

by now she knows what is going on in the mafia world although she didn't want to get involve (she thought it's better to know what is going on around her to avoid incidents)

somehow she always ends up being Chani's plus one in social events (compared to both of them, she is more sociable than Chani)

and somehow and weirdly she is introduced to Kun thanks to Chani and next few events she attended with Chani, she became close with Kun

and the next few days she has a performance at an underground alley and surprisingly from far she saw someone kind of looking suspicious (she almost wanted to call security but she saw a glimpse of the individual face)

she saw everything from him being all lowkey and seeing a few men somehow looking for someone that this was the moment to call her security to secure her fans who were chilling while enjoying her performing

she can't help but to glance at his area not knowing she actually made eye contact with him (she is a professional that she just smiled it off although on the inside she is wondering who on earth would a NCT member be outside in this timing?)

after the performance ended, she didn't think twice to go after him and she saw a glimpse of white stuff on his packet already knowing what he was doing (she surprised herself by telling him what she knows about the men she saw, telling him that those guys are notorious for cheating money)

and that's how they became strangers to friends then to close friends (which Xiaojun would actually accompany her whenever she has performance underground or sketchy places)

until one day Xiaojun accidentally confessed to her as they sat down drinking after a performance (she confessed coolly too and she kissed him on the lips first, that was the day they started dating and they started to make the relationship official)

a very lowkey relationship - that's because she didn't want to cause trouble for Xiaojun and he didn't want cause trouble to her too since he is in a very well-known mafia group

other artists calls her the 'exhibit angel' because first she does regular exhibition (like thrice a month) and lastly, she would divide the amount she receive by selling her works then to donate it to the ones in need

sometimes, people would come to her art studio for her to paint a piece of them but they end up buying the ones that were in the studio

which of course she allows but she had kept one particular portrait secure and framed on the wall

many people question her what is the drawing about and she could only laugh and smile before gazing into the painting, telling them it was someone who she never fails to remember

the only person who she told about that particular painting is of course her older sister (that's because the older one visited the younger in the middle of the night since she missed the family dinner to only find her being covered by multiple colors on her hands, seeing she was painting a particular painting)

she told her older sister that it was someone from high school, she actually considered him as her first love although she never confessed to him and sadly he left out of nowhere - although he was really shy at that time, in the long run when they were close, he was funny, nice and kind.

she remembered feeling gloomy for a whole month whenever she is in school, seeing the empty chair beside her but she get used to it throughout the following years in high school

back to present, one day she decided to accompany her parents' who are old and they wanted to go to this specific workshop and she just went along to accompany them

she didn't even bother to listen to what her parents talking or who they are talking to as soon

as they enter the workshop, she is fascinated with different kind of tools on the wall

the place was very bright and colorful although she figured out all of them were different car parts (that's when she realized that she is in a car workshop, but somehow, this was somehow a different type of workshop)

until she met the eye-contact of the owner of the workshop, she didn't even hesitate to frown deeply while pointing fingers calling his name (she instantly recognize him, he never change at all, he is the only boy she knew who looks like Prince Eric hence that nickname who she usually call him is strictly his)

the boy who she missed is standing just a few steps away from her, pointing his fingers to her too

there was too much to talk about that she gave him her number when he ask her questions, Hendery gave her his number too

maybe because it was all a sudden when they wanted to start talking, her parents had already called her out as they wanted to leave after making a few purchases

she couldn't help but gave him a look where she didn't want to leave but he ensured her that he will call her right after he ended his shift

she gets to know that Hendery is working for NCT, a member of Wayv and he owns the car workshop, he had to leave high school as he had to move to China because of NCT related problems

she couldn't help but miss him, causing her to slowly fall for him

although her family is rich, she decided to work her own which is a wardrobe stylist located near her university (currently)

but she works for Yelena too (surprisingly she is good at styling the models so Yelena only invited her only for overseas runways)

is an introvert at first but as you get to know her, she is more than that

a competitive smart-ass in terms of studies

really smart

isn't friendly in class but is helpful when someone genuinely needs her help in terms of studies

known to score high marks consecutively in her class

until a boy named Yangyang came into her class and he destroyed her rankings (she hates his name as soon as he introduced himself as a new classmate and she even hates him more when he beats her by one mark)

and this would happen for the following months till somehow they openly hate each other, and the class would just let them fought since they were the smartest (they are in their own world where their classmates didn't even have any words to insult them)

one particular day which she somehow was pissed at Yangyang for no reason and she had said words which she didn't meant but Yangyang didn't care at all (and she felt bad the end of the day so she decided to follow him and she didn't even know how she ended up driving while chasing after Yangyang who was running)

Thoughts? There's only one Ray one so far, despite him having several Ray-centric episodes. Not sure what we would switch, though!

General Points:

can O!Len change his clothes? He had a beer from somewhere in ep6 I think, so can he have objects? i think it'd make more sense if he's 'full ghost' so to speak; I think he can't change his clothes or interact with objects until later in the season. As much as I'd love for more dress-up for Len, I think he works best as a ghost

Interesting consistency note: Because Anne gave away the spear piece, her life went to hell. That is a terrifying but wonderful thought. we have something similar with Ching and her history, because she also suffers defeats after her spear piece is gone And technichally the ship in new zealand sinks after they take the piece, too They could have had a chance to change their fates but they lost/gave away the spear pieces and thus couldn't

Stephanie Fisher - we should at the very least give her a shout-out for all her wonderful comments. I vote we give Stephanie some kind of award, not just for the comments, but for ALWAYS catching Damien Darhk's name and correcting it!!!!!

just generally, I really love the snarky Gideon we have. And Jax. I love Jax so much this season. and I even like Stein again! I wasn't a big fan of Ray, but I think we've managed to redeem him as well and Sara is actually the badass captain we wanted her to be

Sara's journey is soooo good. Ray here is isolated, but not so terribly self centered like he was on the show. Like, as the season goes, he goes from being traumatized and lonely, to struggling with his identity, to accepting his identity and...I guess, growing more comfortable with himself and others??

Oh, question: Does Gideon still call Rip Captain Hunter and Sara Ms Lance? Or Mr Hunter and Captain Lance now? I think I went with both of them being called Captain

Episode 9 Turncoat was my favorite canon ep and I feel like it only got better Jax and Amaya were so much better here than canon's "cuddle for warmth pwp" I feel like the rat sequence in ep 9 is actually a really great lead-up to episode 10 btw since we're talking about Ray, I really hope somebody makes one of those little things that fly across your screen with Ray and his rocket boot, and maybe the poor rat too XD

Episode 10 Because ep 10 was /also/ AMAZING that intro sequence was gold from start to finish There was so much world-building, character-building, and humor I really liked the villain sequences too There's some great exchanges there! The interactions were really in character! Oh, and the Amaya sequences with the British? PERFECT I love how Amaya continues to question her own knowledge and keeps evolving it was just such a fun ride honestly I think the lead up to Ray using the cold gun worked too? Oculus!Len giving it the tacit OK was such a balm Len is SO BORED he just wants to see Ray totally fail and laugh and Ray screwing up just worked so well as symbolism for his identity struggles also, I am so sad this isn't actually visual/audio because now I want someone to put together a short clip with the Waverider flying away, then pan down to a ship and you hear the "yo ho" song

Episode 11 I'm a bit bummed we haven't been able to fit in Stein singing, but I'll look over it again and maybe we can find a spot Maybe we could get that into episode 11? I've had there's no depression in new zealand stuck in my head for almost two days now btw episode 11, any more comments, or should we go back to it next week once people have had a chance to look it over? prob the best to look at it again tbh

Episode 12 OH MY GOD 12!!! THE TERROR! it was so good KAKO YOU MADE ME SCREAM literally, my phone rang during the Mick scene and I legit screamed the way you worked in the movie references so organically was genius THE LEN REVEAL WAS PERFECT was the ending scene of 12 okay? the scene with Mick and Sara I liked it a lot that was beautiful I knew I was gonna love this episode the moment it was pitched, but you exceeded all my expectations <3 so well done it's perfect That episode is definitely going to turn heads. It is very different compared to the rest and will stand out! perfect for the mid-season finale Is there a way we can make it a real mid-season finale? aka not post for aday or two afterwards? Well, if we start posting on the 1st and it's 22 episodes, with a month of 30 days... if we started on Sept 4 and posted every day, I think we'd end up with it falling on a weekend Sept 4, posting every day, would make 12 fall on a Friday We could then restart the next Monday

Episode 13 I LOVE THE INTRO I like the "did you learn that in school?" mention. Because the history classes suck yes that is a GREAT cold open the episode was really powerful also, the umbrella scenes were hilarious it really was, the tension followed throughout and was quite perfectly cut through with the UTTERLY FLAWLESS umbrella scenes Also, bitching Legion. This is great, seeing as we want them to implode also: the Len and Gideon scene <3 basically everything was fantastic i know we need to add the rip intro scene, but is there anything else you think we should work on? there were a few suggestions, but those are already in the google doc - overall I think it was an incredible episode, and you guys should be proud - you dealt with a really heavy topic really well Quick question to eisode 13... the Spanish they all got the pill, but we kind of wanted to show the other side of it, like what it sounded like to the woman at the bakery Like the Legends go into the bakery - then we see the woman working inside and it's from HER perspective, and there's spanish dialogue and then it switches to english and we're back to the Legends POV If you wanted it from the woman's POV, maybe start the scene with the woman? as in, she's working inside the register, and then some guys come in and buy stuff and then stay with her a second as they walk out and she's kinda wondering what's up, then shrugs and goes back to work then we jump back to the Legends talking in English she picks up on Mick being distracted by something that's not there i keep craving churros every time I look at this episode I loved how you guys mixed in the light-hearted scenes in with all the heavy stuff yeah it was really well balanced RIP EXITS, PURSUED BY MICK!!!

Episode 14 Sara saves the timeline with a threesome XD nuff said LOVED the bit where Amaya realises that Sara is dancing with the King! So fitting, too, because of my episode following with all the Shakespeare :D I think... I think I didn't actually mentioned an abberation? Just the spear piece rip found there Alternatively Rip is using his Time Master skills to find a piece before it ever causes an abberation That was what I was going for. He finds it, or thinks he did ooh. i like that. but if it is that then i don't think you should mention the witchcraft rumors The rumors that she bewitched Henry had been around for a long time already. Thy say that tht's the reason he left his wife and Rip thinks it's related to the spear piece but it's just generally people being shit can I just say, I really loved all the scenes with Amaya and Jax? seconded My only thing to add is, and I think I mentioned that in the comments, that it would be great if you could fit the Legion in somewhere Yeah, I agree with you. I'll put it in that they arrive late and Len is like "I got this", I think Before I forget: can I suggest Sara to narrate the intro? the last one she did was ep4

Episode 15 basically Kendra's Old West incarnation and the New York Riots incarnaton exist at the same time OW!Kendra doesn't have a name, so she *could* be Josephine from the NYR 8 years prior and that would make that Carter Hannibal  but then her Carter should be named Hannibal, not Shay :( his name could be Hannibal and then he goes by Shay Or he could've changed his name when they moved out west due to being wanted under his old name Just... don't explain it. Leave it for the reader to figure out. And wonder :P (for what it's worth, I thought 15 was delightful and SO GOOD at actually USING history the way a time travel story should) More next week
