HEART EVANGELISTA: THE DARLING OF THE PHILIPPINES
By Kaye Rigor
Heart Evangelista is the pseudonym of Filipina actor, painter, singer, and philanthropist Love Marie Payawal Ongpauco-Escudero. Heart is also the wife of the current governor of Sorsogon, Francis Escudero, and is thus the First Lady of Sorsogon. She started her career as a model after being spotted by a talent agent at 13. She then appeared in numerous films and series such as G-mik, Trip, Bcuz of U, Ay Ayeng, Mulawin vs. Ravena, and Luna Mystika. As a painter, her solo exhibitions at Ayala Museum and Galerie Joaquin were immensely successful. She is also a supporter of LGBTQ issues and is associated with various charities for animals and children, including her own organization, Heart Can.
Childhood & Early Life
Heart Evangelista was born Love Marie Payawal Ongpauco, on February 14, 1985 in Manila, Philippines. She is the daughter of Chinese–Filipino restaurant tycoon Reynaldo Evangelista Ongpauco and his wife, Maria Cecilia del Gallego Payawal. Heart’s mother hails from the Bicol province of Camarines Sur. Heart is the last-born child of her parents. She grew up with one brother, Miguel, and four sisters, Marjorie, Michelle, Camille, and Lisa. Heart moved to the U.S.A. as a child and then went back to the Philippines in her early teenage years. She studied at the Colegio San Agustin in Makati.
Career as an Actress and a Singer
Heart Evangelista was scouted by a talent agent at the tender age of 13, when she was at a shopping mall with her sister. She then signed with the agency Star Magic and bagged a number of commercials. Heart’s father was initially not in favor of her decision to join the entertainment industry. However, she made her TV debut in 2000, with the show G-mik, alongside John Prats. In 2001, she made her movie debut, with the film Trip. She then appeared in the projects Ang Tanging Ina, My First Romance, and Berks. In 2005, she was initially considered for the role of Cho Chang in the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In 2004, after pairing her with John Prats in various projects for 4 years, her agency paired her with Geoff Eigenmann in the film Bcuz of U. The pair also appeared in the series Hiram. In 2005 and 2006, she played Eden in the series Ang Panday, beating many women who had auditioned for the role. In early 2007, she joined ABS-CBN. She was seen in the remake of the film Hiram na Mukha and in Pangarap Na Bituin. The following year, Heart joined GMA Artist Center. She was also seen as Emily on the show Codename: Asero.
Heart played one of the twins in Luna Mystika. She was also seen in Sine Novela: Ngayon at Kailanman, her first afternoon soap. The show ended in September 2009. From late 2009 to early 2010, she was seen as Maria in the series Full House. She appeared as a host on the GMA musical variety show Party Pilipinas. Heart was featured on GMA’s Christmas reality shows Puso ng Pasko: Artista Challenge, too. She appeared as a dwarf in Dwarfina. In late 2011, she was signed by Viva Entertainment. The following year, she appeared as Diana Calcetas in the hit series Legacy. The afternoon drama forever featured her opposite Geoff Eigennmann. She was also seen on the show Luna Blanca (2012). The show was a sequel to the soap Luna Mystika (2008). In 2013, she appeared in the afternoon soap Magkano Ba ang Pag Ibig?, directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes. In 2015, she and her Legacy co-star Lovi Poe came together to star in the melodrama soap Beautiful Strangers. The following year, she worked with her Dwarfina co-star Dennis Trillo again, in the romantic comedy Juan Happy Love Story. Heart was featured in Mulawin vs. Ravena in 2017. She appeared in 105 episodes of My Korean Jagiya. Heart was also featured in Kevin Kwan's Real Crazy Rich Asians when she was in Paris for a fashion-week event. She was named on People Asia's list of “People of the Year 2018-2019.” Other notable projects that featured her were the indie movie Ay Ayeng in 2008, Mano po 6: A Mother's Love in 2009, and the comedy Sosy Problems in 2012. Her role in Ay Ayeng won her the FAMAS Best Actress Award. Heart has also won the Star Award for the Best New Female Personality, the Best New Movie Actress, and the Best New TV Actress. She is also a skilled musician. She released a few tracks of the Pinoy pop genre and was signed with Labels Star Records. She was the recipient of the Himig Handog Award for Texter's and Listener's Choice, for her track Love Has Come My Way. Her single Tell Me peaked at number 18 in the Australian music charts.

Dude Mulawin /has/ come back; it actually replaced the Enca remake! Frankly tho mas invested ako sa Enca ever since, not to mention that they fixed a lot of Enca’s plotholes in the Book 1 remake. The other parts? Let’s just say it was one hell of a trainwreck.
Oh shit really? I didn’t know that! Ever since my grandma moved out in the beginning of the summer we haven’t watched any Kapuso shows because we’re mostly Kapamilya but wow. LOL Maybe I’ll check it out next week. I actually really liked the first Enca for some reason lol. Such nostalgia.

Have read "iris-sistibly" fan opinions. Does she even know what storytelling is? Or she's SO SMART to even do so? Remind her that PINAS to! Kailangan i-sped fed kasi for kids ang Enca, the writer said so. This ain't Game of Thrones. The real crappy thing about this new Encantadia, is remaking it in the first place when they could've retcon the stories of the past into the new ones. Heck! They've done that in Mulawin: The Movie. Remember, Mulagat? The son of Habagat & The Diwata of Water.
Ok, first of all, you, @iris-sistibly and I are entitled to our own opinions and it happens that I agree to most of what she said. Perhaps we can agree to disagree.
I don’t think it’s wrong to feel disappointed with how the storytelling was handled in the Encantadia remake. We’ve always wanted something more out of Philippine TV (because we know we can!) and the remake had initially shown that they had the capacity to do that. And no, we’re not expecting a full GoT style fantaserye because as you’ve said, this is Philippine TV. Lol, hindi siya papasa sa MTRCB. But even a show designed for kids can still have a sound, cohesive and sensible plot. That’s what we were expecting and, incidentally, that’s what the show’s producers initially promised as well.
As for your example of the Mulawin: The Movie, it worked because the original Mulawin and Encantadia 2005 were still very fresh in people’s minds. However, your point makes sense when taken into consideration the Mulawin sequel that will air after Encantadia 2016 ends. We don’t know what prompted GMA7 to decide that Encantadia gets a remake while Mulawin gets a sequel. However, one thing’s for sure, whether we like the new Encantadia or not, it had already succeeded in drawing in new and younger fans, and above all, it revived GMA7′s primetime ratings.

Gil Cuerva
This blog entry is dedicated to this man. Wala po akong maisip na title and because it's all about him it's better to just put his name there. Tehee! Baaaddd!)
So continuation about this blog.. I'm a fan for the first time sobra akong humanga sa actor na to kahit bago pa lang siya sa showbiz. Wala talaga akong ideya kung sino ba yung 'long hair' na leading man.. Then came May 29, 2017 kung kailan ang pilot episode ng 'My Love From the Star' out of curiosity at alam kong magaling na direktor si Bb. Well, ganun naman kasi talaga ang character niya as Matteo, seryoso, no emotions needed, in short hindi kailangan ng matinding acting. Hehe. He's not just a pretty face! He is doin' great! Proud fan here! :) From Gil Cuerva, the Filipino-Spanish international model to an Actor. Unti-unti na niyang nakukuha ang limelight. He is starting to have a big name in showbiz. I know its too early to say, kasi marami pa siyang dapat patunayan..nevermind the bashers they're all just TRASH! Haha! :p But one things for sure he will be an 'Excellent Actor' and a good 'Film Director'. :) 24th of July

GMA Network rewards its viewers with superior and world-class 2017 program launches
GMA Network soars even higher this 2017 as it delivers a new roster of trendsetting and pioneering programs that will surely excite and captivate the hearts of Kapuso viewers.
Produced by the GMA Drama Group, these shows are top billed by only the brightest, hottest and up-and-coming Kapuso actors and actresses in Philippine show business.
First on the list is the original primetime soap Meant To Be. This romantic-comedy series revolves around Billie, portrayed by Barbie Forteza, a struggling millennial who meets four guys with different nationalities: Ken Chan as the Chinese-Pinoy Yuan, Jak Roberto as the Pinoy Macoy, Ivan Dorschner as the Fil-British Ethan, Addy Raj as the Indian Jai. All four boys will fall in love with Billie. Joining them in Meant To Be are Manilyn Reynes, Sheryl Cruz, Tina Paner, Keempee de Leon, Sef Cadayona, Mika dela Cruz, Stephanie Sol, Zymic Jaranilla, and Ms. Gloria Romero.  Under the helm of LA Madridejos with Renei Dimla as head writer and Hazel Abonita as Program Manager, Meant To Be premiered last January 9. The primetime series is also a clear winner in nationwide ratings after consistently beating its competition during its pilot week.
For its Valentine offering, the Kapuso Network brings to light the much awaited soap Destined To Be Yours starring the phenomenal love team—Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza. In the story, Alden breathes life to the character of Benjie, a hardworking and charming architect who wants to acquire a piece of land owned by the family of Sinag played by Maine. Sinag is a loving daughter who works in a radio station in their province. She deeply cares for the environment and the community she belongs to. Anticipation is high for the first ever primetime soap of Alden and Maine which will definitely be an exciting treat for viewers of all ages. Completing the powerhouse cast are Lotlot de Leon, Gardo Versoza, Dominic Roco, Sheena Halili, Ina Feleo, Juancho Trivino, RJ Padilla, Koreen Medina and Boots Anson-Roa. This also marks the comeback of Ms Janice de Belen to the Kapuso Network. After her successful directing stint on the big screen, budding female director Irene Villamor gets her first and biggest directorial job on the small screen as she sits at the helm of this heart-warming primetime show. Des Garbes-Severino is the head writer while Camille Hermoso-Hafezan is the program manager.

In line with GMA Network’s Lipad 2017 battle cry, Kapuso viewers are in for something grand and spectacular this year with the launch of Mulawin vs. Ravena. This telefantasya is the biggest production of GMA this 2017 as it presents a one-of-a-kind and extraordinary primetime masterpiece. Mulawin vs Ravena is headlined by Drama King Dennis Trillo. Showcasing a story of love, triumph and forgiveness is the original Afternoon Prime series Legally Blind. Kapuso actress Janine Gutierrez tackles her most challenging and mature role as a rape victim who gets blind and who will become a lawyer to seek justice from her perpetrator. She will be paired with two of the Network’s talented leading men: Mikael Daez, Rodjun Cruz. Adding star power to the Afternoon Prime soap are Chanda Romero, Lauren Young, Marc Abaya. Legally Blind is under the helm of actor and TV director Ricky Davao with Christine Novicio as head writer and Redgynn Alba as program manager.
Another intriguing drama that will surely make the viewers’ glued to their televisions screens is the remake of the successful TV series Impostora. It is also the first GMA-produced TV drama adapted by a foreign country. This soap tells the story Nimfa, an ugly street vendor who willingly undergoes surgery and complete facial reconstruction to pretend to be Rosette, a wealthy and beautiful but unhappily married wife seeking to escape her husband. This highly controversial drama is top billed by Kapuso versatile leading lady Kris Bernal and playing opposite her are versatile actors Rafael Rosell and Ryan Eigenmann. Hosted by the delightful power couple Drew Arellano and Iya Villania, the program allows celebrities to play for a chance to win two hundred thousand pesos (P200, 000.00) via a variety of eight (8) mind-boggling questions with respective cash values. If the stars fail to answer any of the questions correctly, the question’s cash value will be given to the televiewers by answering the “People Question of the Week” through text. People vs. The Stars is directed by Rico Gutierrez.
Celebrity Bluff, the multi-awarded comedy game show on Philippine television, returns to Filipino homes for a bigger and amazingly fun new season. This all-original game show will be hosted once again by award-winning game show host, comedienne and actress Eugene Domingo and award-winning actor and TV host Edu Manzano as the Master Bluffer. Celebrity Bluff promises to deliver wholesome fun, laughter and thought-provoking information for the whole family not as a weekly game show but a daily afternoon fare.
Full House Tonight is another pioneering weekly comedy-musical show top billed by Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid. The outrageously hilarious program unleashes a powerhouse ensemble of comedians, actors and musical artists all set to give Saturday nights a whole new experience beginning February 18. Full House Tonight showcases the sultry Solenn Heussaff, teen idols Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali, all around performer Joross Gamboa and comedians Philip Lazaro, Nar Cabico, Tammy Brown, Terry Gian, Sarah Pagcaliwagan and Kim Idol.
GMA Network's Heart of Asia will bring Korea's best drama series this 2017.
The Big One, which will air beginning January 23, is about two doctors trying to save Seoul from a natural disaster and Pretty Woman, a love story that stars Hwang Jung-eum, Park Seo-joon, Go Joon-hee, and Choi Siwon.
Meanwhile, extra-terrestrial and supernatural teenagers will also take over the morning block, with adventure series Lightning Point and Wolfblood.
Kapuso viewers are in for a fantastic treat as GMA brings the blockbuster films to be aired on free TV. These include Jurassic World, Furious 7, American Sniper, Mad Max: Fury Road, San Andreas, Minions, Imagine You & Me, and Enteng Kabisote and the Abangers.

WELCOME to the first work and school day of 2017 and for President Rodrigo Duterte, it’s his first full calendar year in office.
Time is not just simply marking the ending and the beginning but also the continuity. We closed the book of 2016 and we just opened and wrote the first two pages of the New Year as we wrote our constantly-improving strokes in the critical (post-truth) era.
General happenings in January by recurrence
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Every year, we are looking on the first month of the year towards the festivities and traditions:
Traslacion on the Feast of Black Nazrene every 9th in Manila
Sinulog on the 15th in Cebu,
The President’s Vin D’Honneur or a simple Toast for the New Year, somewhere whether in Malacanang or in Panacanang in Davao, and
for this year, the Lunar New Year (the Year of the Fire Rooster) will fall on the 28th
Once in every four years, we, as globally concerned citizens, will witness history from across the Pacific as Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States in Washington, D.C. on the 20th.
Once in a generation, we will once again host a prestigious pageant on the 30th with the 65th Miss Universe — which we will discuss it in a sneak.
The network outlook
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Last month, the Big 3 and CNN Philippines held their respective trade launches — intentionally to woo advertisers — to promote their shows expected to be aired throughout the year.
Their offering for this New Year will still be myopic with teleseryes on weekdays. Keep in mind that not all of the shows enlisted will be materialized throughout the 12-month period.
Specifically, two articles from PEP found out why some local shows — whether original yet in repetitive tried-and-tested model or a remade from a K-Drama they air — are shelved, even from the pre-production stage. Four common reasons why they don’t promise as they market include:
Extension of popular shows (e.g. FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano),
Concentration on bankable love teams (for the young) and on workable tandems (for the mid-age),
Slated stars reject their roles due to better opportunities or their inherent limits, and
Giving too much commitment and concentration for other genres, especially sports.
Inasmuch as teleseryes are detestable in the eyes and taste of millennials, neither ABS nor GMA will even budge to reduce their airing from every weekday to twice a week and go back to their diverse programming grid like in the ’90s.
But let’s see what’s in store for ’17 for each group?
The Big 3
ABS-CBN will have no worries with being an absolute advantage of everything — despite their questionable business ethics and breaking their guiding principles based on their slogan for profiteering — but what fears them will be their writing on the wall, i.e. their franchise expiration in 2020. Focusing on this year, their flagship newscast, TV Patrol, will turn 30. In their entertainment side, PBB Lucky 7 will wrap up with the Big Night this month and Ogie Alcasid, the new Kapamilya, will be one of the judges for Your Face Sounds Familiar — both the first Kids edition (confirmed) and the third regular edition.
After the smashing success of the Encantadia requel, GMA’s reviving their greatest fantaserye in early 2000s, Mulawin. Aside from the speculated revival, three teleseryes are now officialy announced:
After the long wait, Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza (AlDub) will finally take the lead on their first primetime project with Destined To Be Yours.
Barbie Forteza will not meet just one leading lad but four — PBB alumnus Ivan Dorschner, Jak Roberto, Ken Chan & newcomer Addy Raj — for Meant to Be. (premiering this Monday)
Finally, the localized remake of Koreanovela My Love from the Star will still apply the “old guns first” policy with Jennylyn Mercado but the leading man will be his first time as a thespian, Filipino-Spanish model Gil Cuerva.
In the corporate aspect, Atty. Felipe Gozon and associates are open to sell their controlling shares this year. The question is: When will these myopic and arrogant honchos ever materialize?
TV5 will see both the fresh and the revival but critics are bothered with the materiality, due to new management yet held and influenced by the same magnate, and thus, they’re given the benefit of the doubt. On the fresh side — though they no longer produce their own entertainment program — they announced two locally produced programs: the new Philippines Next Top Model and Brillante Mendoza Presents. On the other hand, they announce the revival of AniMEGA after the full year hiatus. So far, their titles in the roster include:
KanColle: Kantai Collection
Uta no Prince-Sama Maji Love 2000%
Knights of Sidonia
Myriad Colors Phantom World, and
Attack on Titan Junior High
New US shows — to be dubbed in Filipino — include Quantico and Supergirl. In their movie library, they’ll include animated flicks from Dreamworks.
However, as a warning, TV5 might go back to its usual ways and might be too helpless if they’re giving in too many to sports like their master, MVP. So far, they’re the official broadcaster for this year’s SEA Games in Malaysia. If the warning’s right, Chot Reyes’ resolution to increase revenue and to diversify the programming grid on the network will be a daunting task.
Aside from TV, Radyo5 management’s getting their head replaced;  According to Ben Tulfo, The Philippine Star president and CEO Miguel Belmonte will succeed Gladys Lana-Lucas. The wishlist for the new chief’s obvious: Give a better news coverage on the breaking issues the day.
Minor players
If there are major players, we should also not forget the minor ones.
CNN Philippines proved in 2016 to be an improvement; it will be proven once again in 2017. Some programs announced on their trade launch include:
The Insider (weekly political program) with Gilbert Remulla,
Trippies, hosted by columnist and book author Jessica Zafra and filmmaker Pepe Diokno,
Harvest (food program) featuring international chef and restaurateur Margarita Forés,
My Philippines (a half-hour local travel program), and
an untitled daily entertainment program and a business newscast.
A mini-documentary by American sports journalist Rafe Bartholomew will be dedicated about the fascination of basketball with Hoop Nation.
PTV will be People’s Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) very soon but in the meantime, their big event they’ll look forward is the ASEAN Golden Jubilee and what more to commemorate it is the hosting of the ASEAN Summit — held twice a year — and a separate East Asia Summit (EAS). However, Duterte’s own RTVM show, Mula sa Masa, Para sa Masa, has yet to be materialized.
As of press time, after 10-11 years, PTV Sports dissolved their stand-alone program following the changes in leadership of the said government media.
IBC 13 — the VHF network that’s still lying under the rock — is awaiting so long who will be the lucky bidder. Last week, Chavit Singson joined the bidding game with Ramon Ang and Eric Canoy. If they haven’t been privatized or no bid was legally qualified, PCO Sec. Martin Andanar and his team will use this channel for dedicated to Muslims and Lumads as promised by his boss in the first State of the Nation Address. However, the Turf believed that the pledged Muslim/Lumad channel should be a digital sub-channel to PTV — as we are about to enter the digital TV age — and give the old frequency to new players.
Euphoria post-revelry
Now that we set the outlook on the VHF, it’s time to delve in what we’re euphoric about even the New Year revelry just ended.
After 22 editions, Miss Universe is coming back to the Philippines. Initially exclusive for Solar Entertainment (specifically ETC) on January 30 in the early morning, it will be a partnership with the Big 3 since the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. This will be the second edition that goes off the recently concluding calendar year (first being held 2015 for 2014); thus, the press should use the ordinal form instead of the year — in this case, this will be the 65th Miss Universe.
Regardless of who the successor will be, we will witness the final walk of Pia Wurtzbach to wrap up her tenure in her native country, symbolizing the peaceful transfer of the crown. The Turf will delve more in deep detail on its special edition a few days before coronation night (day).
Final thing
One final thing before the last statement, for DBS 35: Well, their regular test broadcasts in 2016 they received were worsening time after time but the question remains: WHEN WILL THEY EVER FORMALLY RELAUNCH? They say, it’s this month but the Turf remains skeptical: “Do you think it’s just too late to launch or will they break their promises like a usual politician?”
What comes in this 2017 is what our strokes direct us as we contact them in the mysterious blank pages.
