Website 4 - How Well Do You Know Tania?

Week 2 - Website 1.

I was a few days late putting this website out for the week. Don’t know why but I was feeling pretty low for a few days. But I ended up putting something out anyways.

I made a quiz called “How Well Do You Know Tania?” with 4 multiple choice questions that provides users with an alert message of their score. This alert was similar to the alert message I had for my previous website.

I find that when I work on Brackets sometimes and everything is good to go, after uploading my code to a host something always manages to screw up. Spent hours on the code trying to solve the problem. The responsiveness isn’t working when the website is viewed on a phone, but is decent on Chrome.

Initially I had 4 trees and wanted to make the website pretty but the html and css kept shifting everything around. Guess I couldn’t figure out what was wrong and I had to put out something shit for the night.

Interactive Quiz Reflection

SELF REFLECTION:

Reflect – The purpose of the final video presentation was to show a comprehensive review of the interactive quiz. The learning outcomes required the review to be in video format, provide an account of the project experience and demonstrate technical accuracy and attention to detail. The video for this assignment was created using both iMovie and ScreenFlow. The essence of the video was tutorial in nature. I narrated throughout, while clicking on buttons, and creating callouts which highligted and magnified certain areas of the quiz pages. I also incorporated closed captioning for accessibility purposes. The feedback I received for my draft suggested that I address the fine details of ensuring all buttons were visible on the screen. It also suggested that the feedback answers on the quiz not just reiterate the correct response but provide the audience with new information to build upon.

Inquire – to better prepare myself for opportunities in working with code, I will do one of a few tasks, study and manipulate the code from the assignment to become more familiar with it, revisit the tutorials in Lynda.com, find additional tutorials on YouTube.com and perhaps enroll in a coding course.

Suggest – The size constraints of the quiz were quite constricting. If given the opportunity I should have liked to maximize the margins, widening the visible space for the audience. This would have allowed for optimal viewing, more room for feedback and exploration of varied blocks of text layouts.

Elevate – After the initial feedback was addressed, the final critiques were very positive. It stated that the tutorial approach to the video was very effective and that the written reflection thoroughly captured my thought process during the project. In the future, I hope to have a firmer grasp on coding so that I can incorporate creative interactive features that will better engage the audience. As well as, continue to develop my skills in instructional content development with an emphasis on question design, feedback and overall assessments.

10 Tools for Improving Website Accessibility

There’s no doubt that you understand the need for your website to be accessible for as many users as possible. But reading through all of the guidelines and standards can be a little overwhelming. You can find the latest W3C recommendations here, but do you need to know every word, and follow every guideline?

Today, we’re going to try to make it all a little bit easier with some tools and resources to help you improve website accessibility (and maybe even some checks to consider that weren’t on your radar!).

Whether you’re looking to ensure you have enough visual contrast, a site that’s accessible to screen readers, or even create accessible emails, we’ve got you covered!

1. Color Safe

Color Safe helps you check (and even create) accessible color palettes based on WCAG Guidelines for text and background color contrast. The tool and standards use a ratio-based formula to determine color combinations that can be read by all.

WCAG Guidelines recommend a contrast ratio of 4.5 for small (body) text and 3 for large text (anything over 24 points).

Just enter your colors – based on HEX code – font choice and size and generate a palette. You get an immediate ratio to check against and can see other similar colors. Check through to see if something similar might be a better option based on your typeface and size.

2. NoCoffee

NoCoffee is a Google Chrome browser extension that helps you visualize your design in the same way someone who is vision-impaired might see it. (Nothing highlights the importance of accessibility like seeing it in this manner.)

It can check for and show the following:

Low acuity with small text or click targets

Low contrast problems with text and background elements

Colorblindness

Visual snow, glare, ghosting and cataracts

Nystagmus, which is rapid involuntary movement of the eyes

Obstructed visual fields

3. Contrast Checker

Contrast Checker allows you to enter background and foreground colors on the screen and get immediate checks against several visual standards with an instant, color-coded pass/fail.

Nice features of the tool include the ability to flip between color and grayscale options, share samples of your checks and pull colors from images. You can also save a PDF sample. It’s an easy tool with plenty of features that anyone can use quickly.

It also provides the color ratio, as outlined in the WCAG Guidelines.

4. Tota11y

Tota11y is a JavaScript file that puts a tiny button in the bottom corner of documents. It expands with a toolbar that includes multiple plugins for different accessibility checks.

Headings and heading order violations

Contrast (or lack thereof)

Link text that’s missing or confusing

Labels that are missing from inputs

Images without alt-text

Labels are ARIA landmarks

Screen reader “wand” so you can “read” the site like a screen reader would

5. WAVE

WAVE, or web accessibility evaluation tool, is a robust collection of checks in one place.

The tool uses a visual overlay of icons that relate to information in the sidebar to provide details about everything from color contrast to redundant titles to links to HTML and structural elements.

The free checker gives you almost anything you need to know about a single page, but WAVE also includes paid, enterprise-level tools for multiple-site owners or users that want to see more than one page at a time. It also includes Chrome and Firefox browser extensions that can check intranet, password-protected, dynamically generated or sensitive web pages in a private environment.

6. 508 Checker

The 508 Checker tests URLs to determine if a website meets the guidelines for United States 508 Compliance, which is required by law for any organization receiving federal funding.

While this tool is free, you do have to register to see full results of the scan.

The site includes other tools and resources as well, including a quiz to help organizations find out if they are subject to 508 Compliance and specific resources for higher education, nonprofits and government bodies.

7. HTML_CodeSniffer

HTML_CodeSniffer is a client-side script that checks source code and looks for violations of defined standards. It checks both Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 and U.S. Section 508.

Paste code directly into the website for a check or use the bookmarklet.

It’s easy to use and you can choose what type of information to display – errors, warnings or notices and view a report detailing any concerns from the check.

8. Accessible Email

Accessible Email is an online checker and HTML editor that will help you improve the code of an email newsletter before sending it out. (You can also check past/sent campaigns as well.)

With so much digital communication and lead generation coming from email, it shouldn’t be one of the forgotten website elements in terms of accessibility, but it often is. The same rules for accessibility on the web also apply to email sends.

The tool is free to use and designed to promote email marketing accessibility and usability.

9. Amara

Amara is a tool for creating subtitles and closed captions for video.

Providing a way to connect without sound or in another language can open up your design elements to more people, particularly if video is a key element of the design.

This tool includes free and enterprise options that make it easy to put the language on the screen in a readable format that works on websites and video streaming platforms such as YouTube.

10. MobiReady

MobiReady provides a mobile accessibility test in a visual format and with a report of results so you can see where your website might fall short on the smallest of devices.

You can benchmark your site against the Alexa 1000, a ranking of the top websites in the world; get detailed technical results with recommendations and see renderings of your website on different screens, including high-, mid- and low-tier devices.

One of the best parts of this test is that it is scored in dozens of areas and there are suggestions for improvement with any “fails.”

Conclusion

When it comes to website accessibility, it’s important to consider usability and readability for all types of users. Think about color, size, and placement of elements, captions and subtitles, appropriate HTML and structure and even email so that you provide the best experience possible to as many people as possible.

It’s also important to check for any regional or national compliance rules that could apply to your projects, such as the 508 Compliance standards mentioned above.

And when it doubt, it’s better to err on the side of accessibility. It’s OK to tweak a color from a palette or bump up a font size so that more people can understand what’s on the screen with ease.

7.3.2 Mastery Reflection

Last month, I took a course on Digital Media and Learning Applications. This course introduced me to the world of coding. We used HTML, JavaScript, and Brackets to create an interactive quiz. The subject matter of my quiz was the planet GJ 436b. Ideally. students would take this quiz after watching the accompanying video which was created by NASA. The following is my self-reflection on Digital Media and Learning Applications.

Reflect: I began this course with no prior experience in coding. It did not take long for me to discover that I really enjoy using code to create projects. My newfound interest energized my performance. I embraced each phase of the project enthusiastically.

Inquire: After graduation, I would like to research more information on coding. Last month’s assignment was introductory. We spent the first two weeks following step-by-step directions from a Lynda.com video. The second two weeks were dedicated to personalizing the work that we did during the first two weeks. I want to gain an understanding of the vocabulary beyond an introductory level. There are several books that are available through the library that can aid me with my research.

Suggest: If I had more time to work on last month’s project, I would change the responses that student receive indicating a correct or incorrect answer. Currently, correct answers are indicated with an image of the planet GJ 436b. Incorrect answers are indicated with a blue circle. I am happy with the planet but I want to change the blue dot. An updated version would use a gaseous cloud to indicate incorrect answers.

Elevate: In the future, I will enter into similar projects with the prior knowledge that I obtained through last month’s project. This experience will increase my speed of production providing me with more time to be creative. I want to see how animated I can make a project. After working on last month’s project, I know that I will seek out future opportunities to do similar projects in the future.

My instructor consistently praised my coding ability. His primary constructive feedback was, “Be sure to always proof before you post, looking for punctuation, grammatical and spelling errors.” My focus was on the coding which detracted from the questions within the quiz. In the future, I will spend extra time proofreading my work prior to submission.

This is a multiple-choice question with four options to choose from. After an answer is selected, the quiz will indicate whether the answer was right or wrong. Additional information is provided with each question.

Upon completion of the quiz, it provides students with their overall answer. An option to brag about the results is available through email and Twitter.

With text, they read.

The class Digital Media and Learning Applications required me to complete an interactive quiz. My quiz was to accompany the NASA ScienceCasts: The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse video. The quiz was created using an existing quiz made with HTML. I was a first time user of HTML; therefore, it took time to familiarize myself with the use of coding. Completing this task was tedious and enjoyable. Once I learned how to change the font colors, I played with the different shades of colors to find the best one.

If I could redo this project, would I have chosen the same background? Probably not. I could have chosen a black background that would have made this a less difficult task. Would I have enjoyed creating the interactive quiz? Probably not. The background chosen allowed me to dig deeper. It required me to find out how to change font colors as well as font sizes.

Although I thought that I chose the best font color, I ended up with the color blue as the feedback color and yellow as my question color. My instructor recommended that I be more careful with my choice of colors. The blue on the orange can be hard on the eyes. The yellow looked good against the background but when the letters were on the diamond of the eclipse, it became difficult to read.

When completing the task of creating an interactive quiz in the future, I will be more mindful of my viewers. When choosing backgrounds, I will be careful of the location of the images. Type over the image can make for a difficult read if the font color is not chosen well. I have included pictures of each page of my interactive quiz for your viewing.
