Starting a collection of pre-photography (~1826) painted portraits I've seen that give me the same feeling as photographic portraits. Feel free to add your own, especially if it’s older or lesser known paintings!

Recently I was contacted by a Dr. Ella Karev to produce some artistic representations of the physical descriptions described in an ancient Egyptian biometric system for her upcoming presentation on it. It'll be a part of the University of Chicago’s “Humanities Day” program that'll be live at 9:30 AM CST on the 15th of October 2022 and subsequently recorded and released on the university's YouTube channel a few weeks after. So if you either just have an interest in history or want to spot my art during a neat presentation certainly give it a look!

PAINTED MUMMY PORTRAITS OF EGYPTIANS DURING THE ROMAN PERIOD
The painted mummy portraits of Roman Egypt almost uncannily bring before us individuals from about two thousand years ago. The powerful promise of the ancient Egyptian afterlife, the pervasiveness and coherence of Roman culture, and the strong naturalism of the Graeco-Roman painting tradition combined to produce these arresting portraits of the gentility of the towns and cities of Egypt beyond the great metropolis of Alexandria. —Ancient Faces: Mummy Portraits from Roman Egypt (ed. Susan Walker) (1997)
