hi wait hi hello? so im rereading NtN and i just caught a brief hint of a metanarrator that i completely missed the first time around — when Hot Sauce and Nona are talking about the Angel before the broadcast, and the text says,

“Nona was so cowed that she didn’t even ask what part of you the asset was.”

this entire books been in third person up to this point (unless i missed something) so i didnt think to be looking for any fun secret narrator tricks like from HtN (shame on me ig). now im simply enthralled by trying to figure out who the corresponding “me” would be — and there would have to be a “me”, right? to call someone “you” is to address them directly, and in this instance seems to imply at least a cursory personal familiarity as well — my only thought right now is harrow, just bc its her body so maybe she’s in the back of alecto/nona’s mind the way that alecto was in the back of hers after breaking into the tomb? but that seems a little flimsy as a theory, not to mention that when gideon was narrating from the back of harrows mind she was speaking in second person for the most part, never third person, and only on like, one occasion pre-murdernight did she use first person

something that i also just realized is really weird is that the “you” is not referring to the body being followed by the narration, which kind of further kills the harrow theory for me, personally. like, it feels like our metanarrator, despite following nona’s POV, is not that well acquainted with her at all/actually “”affiliated”” with her body, since the only deviation from third-person in NtN (thus far) is with a person that nona barely knows, and is not to our knowledge known by either harrow or gideon — the only other person that i think has ever resided within that body is wake who…. maybe knew the angel? depending on how long angel’s been affiliated with BOE. there was also that line from We Suffer about posthumous contact — theres a possibility that wake found out about the angel from there, but that still wouldnt explain what the hell wake’s doing narrating this, so it’s probably not her anyway

O M G EXACTLY. You people are more wound up about murder night than the thing that Alex did. This was just a joke. It's not as if I said Chris killed a member of his family and was dead serious about it. No. I used Lallie, because we always joke about her and Chris having a one night stand.
