mermaid melody still slaps tho I recommend listening to the songs (the anime is a little weird tho, but oh well, 2000s...)

Everyone hates the whole 'childhood lovers' trope in Asian dramas but at least in Melody of Golden Age/Chang Le Qu it makes sense.
In some of these dramas they'll have the ML pining after a girl he met once when they were both five. And it never makes any sense because who gives a shit about something like that. But in MoGA she literally visited him every day while he was in prison, combed his hair, cleaned him as best she could, brought him food and kept him company when he was all by himself at night. THAT'S a true first love story.
On top of all this it was REALISTIC. He didn't immediately recognize her. In fact, she asked him and he said, "Should I know you?" which totally tracks. Although she played a major role in his childhood he had other things going on. He was also older than her and went on to pursue this career that had him dealing with all sorts of people. And people! Often! Share! The same! Name! Which is something that's never brought up in these dramas! How do you know it's the same person?!
On the other hand Shen Du's case was notorious. She would've known that he grew up to become the top general because people would've gossiped about it. There's no room for her to question if he's the same Shen Du. Of course he is.
They both went on to pursue careers related to his family's case. She went on to become a detective specifically to clear his name (which makes sense because being 6-10 years old and seeing your friend in prison would definitely leave an impression).
And then he went on to become the top general to do the same thing.
We LOVE a good fleshed out childhood friends to (enemies to) lovers arc.
