Project: Home Arcade v2 - A Living Room RetroPie System for Classic MAME & Retro Gaming
Project: Home Arcade v2 – A Living Room RetroPie System for Classic MAME & Retro Gaming
MAME – Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator A few years ago, I wrote two articles about my experiences setting up a small, quiet, PC in my living room for retro gaming. The goal was to buy and outfit a system to play classic MAME and console games, at a cost that was no more than a current-generation video game console. The project was a major success, and my friends and I have had a blast playing…

The NESPi Problem

I really wanted to like this case, but it looks now like I’m going to have to abandon it in favor of another one for the RetroPie I’m building. First, there were power supply issues with it that required me to rewire the power switch and supply lines. Not a big deal I thought, but a pain. Now there is another issue apparently, involving the internal USB hub and the latest version of Raspian (4.14/Stretch) that comes bundled with the RetroPie install download.
It seems that there is a bug in Raspian (or maybe its a HW issue with the hub) that casues endless error messages to be logged to the files in /var/log. It may or may not also be related to using the XBox wireless dongle on these outside USB ports, this is what others have run into who use this setup. Things kind of work, but your disk fills up, and it also appears to be the cause of the hangs I experienced.
Options here are:
Downgrade to Raspian Jessie (you will have to manually install Retropie on it). People report this is OK but have not tried it
You can disable logging, but this is only a partial fix - performance is still impacted because the OS is taking exceptions constanty
Hack your case to allow you to access the internal USB ports of the Pi instead of the hub (for me, file this under, what’s the point?)
Wait for a fix from Raspian - they are aware of it, I see activity in GitHub about this bug. Not sure when it will be fixed - the 4.14-70 kernel still has it.
Get a new case. This is probably the way I’m leaning

Project Summer Fun - NesPi4 Build - Part 1 The Build
So here we are it's the middle of July and as work slows down I tend to look for fun things to do. This summer I want to playt some retro video games like Tetris, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Space Harrier. Games from my childhood as I grew up in the 8-bit and 16-bit console era. Since I do not have an older TV to play these older systems on I think I am going to build a retro game console.
To do this I am going to need some parts. So here is the parts list:
Raspberry Pi 4B 4GB (that should be plenty of Ram for most every retro game I want to play)
Retroflag NES-PI 4 case. This case is awesome. It looks like a retro Nintendo Entertainment System case. It has an AC adapter, SATA SSD adapter cartridge and a CPU cooler in the box. It is the perfect retro gaming case for this project. It even has working power and reset buttons.
2.5 inch SSD drive or a Micro SDXC UHS1 drive. If you are using a Micro SDXC flash drive you will need a USB card reader.
Micro HDMI to HDMI cable.
8BitDo SF30 Pro game pad. It is designed like a Super Nintendo Entertainment System controller, only wireless. It also has the benefit of having dual analog sticks. This should allow for game emulation up through the PS2.
Batocera Linux.
Raspberry Pi Imager
PUTTY
USB Keyboard and mouse
A PC (Mac, Windows, or Linux)
The Build
I am going to refer you to a video over at DB Tech. His assembly of the NesPi 4 case is great.

Once you have assembled the NesPi4 Case you are going to need an OS. We will cover that in the next article.
MacSwitch - Project Summer Fun - NESPI 4 Build Part 1 - The Build
Once you have assembled the NesPi4 Case you are going to need an OS. We will cover that in the next article. In this case I chose Batocera Linux. It's a great Retro Gaming OS. It even seems to have the fix for booting Batocera from the 2.5" USB 3 hard drive.

Project Summer Fun Overview
It's been a long year, and now I feel the need to have a little fun. I was going to upgrade a small computer to use as a home entertainment PC, but the PCs BIOS blocked adding PCIe GPU. So I have moved on to an alternate plan. I am going to build two retro gaming devices. The one retro gaming console will be a set-top box of some form. The other device will be a portable handheld gaming device. The gaming systems will use Raspberry Pi based computers.
Gaming Console Parts List
Raspberry Pi 4
Retroflag NESPI4 Case
64 GB Micro SD Card
Batocera Linux
8BitDo SF30 Gamepad
8BitDo Pro 2 Gamepad
In a later upgrade I will install a 500GB SATA SSD drive.
Handheld Gaming Console
Raspberry Pi Zero W
Retroflag GPi Case
64 GB Micro SD Card
Batocera Linux
In a later upgrade I will upgrade the Raspberry Pi to a Compute Module 4 using a Retro Game Restore GPiMate Plus for CM4 Lite, and a 256 GB Micro SD Card.
My next article as part of Project Summer Fun is a review of the Retroflag NESPi 4 case. My next Up To Date article is on RISC.

Crashy crashy Retropie
I’ve been having some trouble with my Retropie system that I’ve installed into the NESpi case. It runs for a while but then hangs during gameplay. I thought for a while it was the NESpi case, and reworked the whole power system for it.
Then I tested without the case at all, and the same thing. Runs for several minutes in a game then freezes. I swapped out various cables/supplies trying to rule that out, but the killer clue was that I have a second RetroPie system I built for the upcoming PiGRRL project, and that machine using the identical power supply and cable runs fine. So it’s not the cable, supply, or case. Has to be the Pi itself, or the software. I am using:
Raspberry Pi 3B+
RetroPie 4.4
RetroArch emulators and EmulationStation
Installed the ffmpeg modification to record video
Hangs observed in both MAME and GBA emulation
So I’m thinking it’s either the 3B+ board to blame, or my distro is corrupted, or maybe the SD card. Anyone with any similar experience/thoughts about it, let me know. I will probably try a card swap between boards next, to divide it between HW and SW...
