HMB: Sleepaway Camp
Original Publishing Date: February 23rd, 2017
Do I really need to talk about this film? There's only one reason why people bring it up. The rest of the movie is idiotic garbage, but it's the ending that everyone talks about. So... I'll just give quick thoughts on the film as a whole and dive into... The ending... Sleepaway Camp is about Abigail, a shy quiet girl who attends Sleepaway Camp with her cousin. But a killer is on the loose, killing all the character who bully Abigail. Hmmm... I wonder if there's a connection. Like all 70's and 80's movie set in camp, everyone is an asshole to the weird kids. They pick on Abigail despite not doing anything, all because she's weird. No one in this movie behaves normally, and I don't mean intentionally abnormal like Abigail, I mean they are suppose to be normal but their horrible acting and dialogue makes them cartoon characters. It's also obvious that the "teen" characters are full grown adults, giving this film a pedofilia vibe to it, not to mention there's two actual pedos in the film. So it's pretty obvious that Abigail is the killer, they try to make it seem it could be her cousin, but they never fool us, we know its Abigail. I have a problem when horror films limit their body count to unlikeable jerk characters. The point of horror is that we want likable characters to thrive till the end of the film. You can make the villain as sympathetic as you want, but they are still the villain, and there needs to be a likable hero for us to latch onto. The closest we get to that is Abigail's cousin, and maybe her boyfriend, but he's a bit of a jerk sometimes too. But fuck it, who cares about the movie, its the ending that has all the buzz about it! So Tumblrs, get out your trigger words, and Alt-Righters get out your confetti, because its time to talk about trans people! So... Abigail is a dude. That's the twist. Which leads to the big question everyone has about this film, is this transphobic? Well... Kind of. Let's compare this twist to a similar twist ending, Psycho. Spoiler alert for Bates Motel Season 5 (which I just realizes I haven't updated that blog in over a year... shit...), but Norman's mom was just Norman in woman's clothes. People have accused Psycho of being transphobic too, but here's the thing, what was disturbing about that scene wasn't Norman was wearing woman's clothes, it was that he thinks he's his own mother, that's what's scary about him. In Sleepaway Camp, Abigail was Peter, a young boy we saw at the beginning of the film who lost his sister and father in an accident. He was forced to live with his psychopathic aunt who forced him to dress up as a girl (making this the third horror film that uses that trope... Interesting cliché...). To be trans is to willingly accept a different gender, not abused into it. But the reason why I say "kind of" instead of "of coarse not" when answering this question is due to context. In Psycho, the reveal of Norman's mental health was what sparked the fear. In Sleepaway camp, it's the reveal of Abigail being a boy that sparked the fear. If you have no problem with girls dressing up as boys and vice versa, you're not going to find this scene disturbing. So, in a sense, this is transphobia. You are afraid and disturbed by the fact that a woman was really a man the whole time. Now, the real debate is if its justified to be transphobic about this scene... Which... I'm not going to touch that with a twelve foot pole. I'm just an idiot who draws cartoons and watches horror films. So I'll leave it at that. Did I enjoy this film? In a Mystery Science Theatre king of way. I was cracking jokes and making fun of all the dumb shit in the movie, so I was having a gay old time. And I have to be honest with you people, I knew the twist going into the film, blame Robot Chicken. The real question is, would I recommend it? No. And not because of the controversial ending, because the movie up until that point is only so bad its good. If you like those kinds of movie, then see it. But if you are looking for a legit scary horror film, then this isn't it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to drink bleach and check my privilege.
