Why use a pressure Guage?

When working with hydraulic tools, a hydraulic pressure gauge is an essential component to include in your pressure system.

So, how does a hydraulic pressure gauge help? And how do you choose the correct one for your application?

Reasons to use a hydraulic pressure gauge

Working without a hydraulic pressure gauge is unpredictable. You are working ‘blind’ and totally unable what might happen next.

Improved Visibility

A pressure gauge provides a window into the system. If there’s a problem, it will show you when it is safe to carry out investigative activities, such as checking hose connections.

Effective Troubleshooting

Gauges are essential when troubleshooting: Imagine you are using hydraulic cylinders to lift a load, but you find that the load won’t go up. The gauge can tell you if there is enough pressure at the pump and that the pump is working ok. If this was the case you would know that the problem lies elsewhere. |For example, the cylinder may be too light for load, or the load is heavier than expected.

Spot Leaks and Blockages

If leaks or blocks occur in the circuit, the system pressure will reduce and you will see this in the gauge. Technicians can then identify the reason for that pressure drop and repair it immediately.

Prevent Hazards

Using the right gauge will help to prevent many hazards. E.g., exploding gauges, leaking hydraulic fluid, injury from pressurized connections, or the load from falling.

Even when there isn’t a problem it’s good to have the confidence that all is well!

We make a trial for lance hose assy. combine with our Spin Rotary Spray Nozzle in our loboratory by gradually increasing the pressure.

We found that :-

NPT Thread Gauge: 101 Guide

Pipes usually have threads like many other mechanical objects. You might have to deal with internal or external threads in a pipe when you are working on your own. Usually, these pipes are used for the transportation of essential resources such as oil and gas. Since the usage of pipes is critical to the well-being of the world at large, it is also essential to maintain them. Corrosion, leakage and other problems can come in the way of efficient transportation of fluids. This is there the role of precision tools such as the NPT thread gauge comes in.

What is the NPT Thread Gauge?

There are several types of thread gauges used for variety of functions and based on varying standards as well. NPT or National Pipe Thread is a common tool which is used for dealing with pipes. Canada, USA and Britain all use the NPT thread gauge for dealing with the industrial pipes which transport oil and gas.

On the other hand, for the transportation of the fuels, a slight variation of pipe threads is used called the NPTF (National Pipe Thread Fuel). Although the two of these are similar in most ways, NPT thread gauge does not need the sealants. This is due to the fact that the sealant is automatically processed within the NPT thread gauges.

Different Types of NPT Thread Gauge

Just like the other thread gauges, there are many types of the NTP thread gauge too. The ring gauges of the NTP thread gauge are used for measuring tolerance level as usual. However, the plug gauges are used for checking internal threads. Both of these types cover the external and internal threads of pipes.

You can further divide the thread gauges that fall under the NTP:

NPT L1 Taper Pipe Ring:

This is the pipe ring gauge which is used for measuring the pitch of external pipes and plays an important role in setting up pipes. Moreover, they also perform the essential task of determining the functional size of pipes. They are also used when it comes to hand-tight engagement of the pipes. All of these steps play an important role in transportation of fluids.

NPT L2 Taper Pipe Ring:

The other type which is also a necessary part of the NPT gauge thread is the L2. This taper pipe ring is used for more complex performance such as checking for the Dryseal as well as determining aeronautical tolerance of the pipe.

NPT thread gauge is one of the tools which cannot be overlooked. You also have to be careful about purchasing the right type of the thread gauges so that you get long lasting and satisfactory performance.

The difference between other thread gauges and NPT thread gauge can be judged by the fact that their appliance is completely different from the rest. They are made to adhere to particular tasks and so the tools are specific to the appliance. Furthermore, they are not complex to purchase due to their wide availability in the market.

Precision in any experiment is very important. Well, that's what our practical teacher used to tell us in school. A minute change in the results would lead to a different conclusion. Different instruments are used to measure different things such as the vernier calliper is used to measure the diameter of a bob or the depth of measuring cylinder, with the help of convex mirror we can find out the focal length. Similarly, a screw gauge (used for measuring the diameter of a thin wire or thickness of metal sheet) is used for obtaining more precise calculations.

There are also some instruments which measure the thread of a screw. This instrument is known as thread gauge. Thread gage is used to measure and verify pitch, thread size, and related parameters and is a dimensional instrument. A thread gauge checks the correctness of the thread which includes the pitch diameter (in terms of TPI which is threads per inch). This device saves time as the users do not need to calculate the thread pitch of the threaded item.

We can, however classify the threads based on its shape and pitch. The designation of threads can be UNC, UNEF, UNF, ANPT, NPTF, BSPP, BSPT, NPSF, UN, M/MJ (metric), ACME and buttress. However, the types of thread gauges can be that of ring, measuring wire, tri-roll comparator, 3-wire and screw thread insert gauges.

However, there are two Unified series that are used, one is the UN and the other is UNR. Let's see what UNF and UNEF thread gauges are.

UNF thread gages:

UNF is basically used for unified fine pitch threads. It has thread angle of sixty degrees and one can use them mostly as imperial threads. UNF is exactly the same as the old SAE (Standard American Engineer) which existed before the threads were united. Fasteners of size 1'' - 14 are referred to as "UNF" thread. This size has been accepted universally. 5/16 and 3/8 UNF are both 24 TPI however 1/4 UNF is 28 TPI. Fine threads are being used in applications where thin walls are used and which require high tensile strength. The TPI (distance between threads) in gauges are majorly based on the sizes available in UNF. So if the range of a fastener is between 8 to 36, then we can classify it as Unified Fine(UNF). UNJF is an extension of UNF with external thread controlled root radius.

UNEF thread gages:

UNEF thread is used when the length of engagement is smaller than the fine thread series. UNEF is the same as UNF but the only difference is that of the number of threads per inch as each fastener will now have a greater number of threads. Any application which requires the use of fine threads uses UNEF thread gauge. It has a flank angle of 60 degrees which is used for special purposes and it is has overridden the UN fixed designation.

We can get UNF and UNEF fasteners only from the suppliers who supply the fasteners to industries.

The utility of the thread gauges in the industry

It would seem very easy for any one of us to tighten a screw. One has to have a screwdriver. It is that simple. However, have we ever wondered that the same screw had to go through strict quality checks just to become eligible for use? Of course, the screws have a very important role to play in every kind of machinery. You would not be able to find any machinery without the humble screw. Therefore, when the screw has so much utility, it is natural to have strenuous methods to check their utility and tolerance levels. Many an engineering design has to depend on the screw and the nut to hold the different items of the machinery together. You need to use checking tools such as the Whitworth thread gauges for checking the tolerance levels and certifying the fitness of the screws.

Have you ever noticed that the screw invariably has the threads on the outside portion whereas the nuts have them internally? They have to, as the use of the nut is to fasten the screw. Similarly, you can find some pipes having external threads whereas some have internal ones. The pipes have different types of threads as well. The industry workers use a lubricant or a pipe tape for ensuring that there are no leakages. They use a special kind of thread known as the NPT thread. The pipes that carry inflammable material like gasses, etc have a higher quality of threading known as the NPTF threads.

Coming back to the thread gauges, you would require different kinds of thread gauges like trapezoidal thread gauges, ACME thread gauges for determining the tolerance levels of different kinds of threaded instruments. The thread ring gauges have utility for checking the tolerance levels of the instruments with external threads such as the screws. They have two kinds of ring gauges, the ‘Go’ type, and the ‘No Go’ type. This might be the only instances in history where the instrument taking the tests has to fail the tests to be successful. When we say ‘fail the test’, it entails that the instrument should not be able to pass through the No Go type of thread ring gauge. On the other hand, it should easily pass through the Go type of gauge.

In the same way, you have the thread plug gauges to determine the tolerance levels of the instruments having internal threads. The plug gauge has to go through the Go side of the implement. The No Go side should not go in for more than two revolutions into the implement. In case it is successful in achieving this unique objective, the implement is fit for use in the industry.

The task appears simple. However, it is not so. It would take a lot of time to set up the machinery required to check the tolerance levels. However, once set, the machine can work tremendously fast thereby obviating the use of human labor. You can call this trait an advantageous one or a disadvantageous one depending on how you look at the issue.

1. Ulir segitiga Jenis ulir ini sudah banyak sekali kita temui, dan juga banyak sekali standarnya dari ulir segitiga ini diantaranya adalah sebagai berikut: a. Ulir Metris / Metric Standart Thread Merupakan sebuah ulir segitiga dengan sudut puncaknya 60° dan keseluruhan dimensinya dalam satuan metris. Simbol dari ulir ini adalah "M" contohnya M8 x 1,25 adalah sebuah ulir metris dengan panjang diameternya 8 mm dan pitch 1,25 mm

b. Ulir Whitworth / Whitworth Standart Thread Merupakan sebuah ulir segitiga dengan sudut puncaknya 55° dan juga keseluruhan dimensinya dalam satuan british (inchi). Simbol dari ulir ini adalah "W", yang contohnya W ?" x 20 TPI adalah ulir whitworth dengan diameter ?" dan juga terdapat 20 Thread per Inch (jumlah puncak ulir tiap jarak 1 inchi)

c. Ulir Pipa NPT Connections

NPT (National Pipe Thread) Seal sudah populer digunakan di U.S dan juga Canada. NPT male adapter mempunyai sebuah ulir yang meruncing (taper) yang sesuai dengan NPT female adapter. Keduanya akan otomatis mengunci, karena male adapter mempertegang sebuah female fitting sampai didapatkannya sekian dari tenaga untuk menahan sebuah pressurenya.

Salah satu tantangan pada desain ini adalah jika kita menghubungkan sebuah stainless steelnya ke stainless steel maka apabila jika terlalu kencang ataupun juga karena lubrikasi yang cukup buruk akan dapat mengakibatkan merusak ulirnya. Thread Sealant diperlukan juga untuk meng-seal tapi sudah cukup hanya 2 garis ulir sajalah yang dibutuhkan. Lebih dari itu maka sealant akan pada lari kemana-mana.

Selain itu ada juga varian lain yaitu NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel), yang didesain dengan bebas bocor tanpa harus dengan menggunakan sealant maupun juga teflon tape.

BSP Connections Ada 2 tipe pada ulir BSP yaitu tipe Paralel dan juga tipe Taper (meruncing): Ulir Taper, ataupun juga BSPT (British Standard Pipe Thread) memiliki diameter yang cukup tidak konstan (melebar/mengecil) sepanjang batang pada ulirnya. Dinotasikan dengan huruf R.

Sekilas BSPT hampir sama dengan NPT kecuali pada sudut ulirnya (antara crest dan root) adalah 550 (sementara sudut NPT adalah 600). Dengan demikian pula, NPT male dapat mudah masuk ke BSPT fitting tapi tidak akan bisa mengunci (longgar). BSPT fitting ini cukup populer di China dan juga Jepang tapi jarang digunakan di Amerika. Seperti NPT, Thread Sealant diperlukan guna untuk mengunci male dan juga female bersamaan. contohnya R ?" yaitu ulir standar pipa untuk diameter pipa ?"

BSPP Connections Tipe ulir pada Paralel adalah sebuah BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel Thread), dan juga disebut juga BSPF / BSPM (British Standard Pipe Fitting / British Standard Pipe Mechanical Thread). Dinotasikan dengan huruf G.

BSPP adalah suatu tipe ulir yang paling sering digunakan. Tipe ini adalah fitting ulir pada paralel, yang mempunyai sebuah diameter konstan, dan menggunakan seal ring guna untuk menguncinya (Sealing). Bonded ring sealnya ini dipasang pada antara punggung male fitting dan juga muka female fitting dan juga menjepit. BSPP pressure gauge mempunyai longer male thread dan juga menggunkan ring guna untuk menekan dasar pada male fitting dan juga dasar lubang female BSPPnya sehingga membuat pressure tight seal. kita Tidak perlu Thread Sealant untuk membuat sebuah seal pada BSPP.
