For Monday 29 March
ASSIGNMENT: I want to slow things down a little, so -- for Monday please return to the image of Bodhidharma (Daruma) we were looking at on Friday and spend some time looking at it and recording your thoughts in your notebook. Bring your observations and questions to class for discussion. Please think about:
the methods and materials used (watch the video Maggie sent for help with this)
the features and iconography of the other Buddhas we have looked at -- and how they compare to those of our dude here
the overall contrast and collapse of opposites in every aspect of the painting -- including abstractions like emotion and energy
Also, here’s the fun video about how our salmon sushi is Norwegian.
Also also, here’s the image of Bodhidharma from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
Bodhidharma (Daruma). Artist: Nakahara Nantenbō.
