Women’s History Meme || Scandals (big or small) (4/5) ↬ The abduction of Marie of Calabria
This task became increasingly difficult, particularly after the rivalry between the Tarantini and Durazzeschi was exacerbated by the clandestine (and possibly forced) 1343 marriage of Mary of Naples (then only thirteen) to Charles of Durazzo (1323–48). Mary stood second in line to the throne; the marriage, which made Charles the husband of Naples’ possible future queen, violated the terms of Mary’s betrothal to Louis of Hungary but had tacit papal approval. Naples became a hotbed of intrigue that threatened to erupt into open feuding. Clement VI was obliged to maintain constant contact with the Neapolitan branches of the Angevin family, with Johanna and her advisors, and with the increasingly irate Hungarians as he struggled to sustain the fragile peace within this most dysfunctional of families. — From She-Wolf to Martyr: The Reign and Disputed Reputation of Johanna I of Naples by Elizabeth Casteen But Agnes [of Périgord], having anticipated this response, was ready for it. Two days later, on March 28, the house of Durazzo launched the second, covert half of its plan. One of Maria’s ladies- in- waiting, a young woman by the name of Margherita di Ceccano, herself the niece of a cardinal, was an accomplice to the plot. With Margherita’s help, Charles of Durazzo quietly lured his young fiancée into the west garden of the Castel Nuovo, which abutted the grounds of his family’s estate. According to Domenico da Gravina, from there he “abducted” her to his castle, where a sympathetic priest was waiting. This priest, by the power invested in him in accordance with one of the secret bulls signed by the pope, then hurriedly and secretly married the couple. But the performance of so unorthodox a nuptial sacrament was not enough to assure Charles of his bride. So just to make certain that there was no going back, as soon as the priest was finished, the duke of Durazzo took the precaution of consummating the marriage. Or, as Domenico da Gravina, relaying information that was obviously common knowledge at the time, reported, “having intercourse, it is said, and keeping her in his own palace.” Even an environment as sexually permissive as court life in Naples apparently had its limits. Charles’ and Maria’s behavior scandalized the kingdom. Worse, it goaded the house of Taranto to drop its diplomatic effort in favor of a strategy centered on armed conflict. — The Lady Queen: The Notorious Reign of Joanna I, Queen of Naples, Jerusalem, and Sicily by Nancy Goldstone

i've been listening to this one on loop lately! i was torn between this and bull in the heather by sonic youth, but i feel like since i was listening to this one more often i had to go with it 2: A song you like with a number in the title
youtube
this is a cover; the original by joanna newsom is also soooooooo good, but i know her voice is an acquired taste. this song is one of my all time favorites. if i ever got a lyric tattoo, it would be from this song. marika cut out the first three lines of the last verse which is unthinkable tbqh because they are the most emotionally hitting ones: The unending amends you've made // Are enough for one life // Be done 5: A song that needs to be played LOUD
youtube
soooooo hard to pick just one but this is a Must. pup is full of must play loud songs. matila and totally fine are also on looooop lately
9: A song that makes you happy

this one might need a little explanation... it makes me think of my character avalon since it is the type of song that would be a children's rhyme from her childhood, and she is silly and makes me happy. so song regardless..... it makes me happy!
28: A song by an artist with a voice that you love

Book 473
Walter Potter’s Curious World of Taxidermy
Dr. Pat Morris with Joanna Ebenstein
Blue Rider Press / Penguin Random House 2014
Born in Bramber, Sussex, England in 1835, Walter Potter (d. 1918) grew up in the family inn/pub, The White Lion. He left school at the age of fourteen and began trying to come up with ways that his naturalist/taxidermy hobby could help encourage business at the pub. At the age of 19, inspired by his younger sister’s collection of nursery rhymes, Potter started creating his first major tableu, The Death and Burial of Cock Robin—a work that would take him seven years to complete. Housed within a wooden house-shaped case nearly two yards wide, Cock Robin features 98 birds, a small handmade bull, butterflies and other insects, and even a snake—artfully arranged in a solemn mourning scene down a path leading into a church. Some of the mourners are even crying glass tears. The work delighted the Victorian sensibility.
Eventually, Potter opened a museum to house his work and over the course of his life would create, among numerous smaller pieces, at least a dozen large tableaux with titles like: The Kittens’ Wedding (c. 1890), Rabbits’ Village School (c. 1888), The Upper Ten (c. 1880), depicting a squirrel card club, and The Lower Five (c. late 1800s), a scruffy rats’ den being raided by local police (also portrayed by rats).

Taurus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: @spiritdaughter Right: Thiago Corrêa
♉︎ I have.
Sun in Taurus: April 20-May 20
Duality: Feminine or self contained and strong through inner reserves
Triplicity/Element: Earth
Quadruplicity/Quality: Fixed
Ruling Planet: Venus
Symbol: The Bull
Body part: Neck and throat
Color: Several places say different things. I'm going to say green.
Tarot: The Hierophant
Archetype: The Sensualist
Taurus is an interesting balance of strong and dependable mixed with luxury and sensuality, which demonstrated perfectly in its tarot card. The Hierophant and Taurus are both constant forces, but are open to creativity and sensitivity. I've always heard Taurus described as being stubborn, but I think it's more that they like their creature comforts. They are down to earth and enjoy peace. Change is very hard for them. The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need puts it best "Like a bull quietly grazing in a pasture, you're not looking to challenge anyone, but it would be a fatal mistake for anyone to challenge you."
For my study I primarily used The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need by Joanna Martine Woolfolk, Witchipedia, and the podcast Accessible Astrology. I used Pinterest to find artwork that spoke to me. I am not an authority on astrology, just sharing my thoughts.

Royal women who died in childbirth in 15/16th century
There are misconceptions that Tudor were somehow unnaturaly cursed, more plagued by fertility issues and deaths in childbirths than the other dynasties.
Plenty of past royal miscarriages and stillbirths were not even recorded. But had they existed they could have contain similiarly grim acount.  But we can at least look at records of royal women who died in childbirth in 15th and 16th century:
During, or soon after childbirth/miscarriage:
Philippa of England, Queen of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in 1430
Catherine of Castille, Duchess of Villena in 1439
Catherine of Poděbrady, Queen of Hungary in 1464
Anne of Savoy(Crown Princess of Naples) in 1480
Isabella of Aragon, Queen of Portugal in 1498
Elizabeth of York, Queen of England in 1503
Anne of Foix-Candale, Queen of Bohemia and Hungary in 1506
Maria of Aragon, Queen of Portugal in 1517
Jane Seymour, Queen of England in 1537
Isabella of Portugal, Holy Roman Empress in 1539
Maria Manuela of Portugal, Princess Asturias in 1545
Catherine Parr, Dowager Queen of England in 1548
Isabella of Valois, Queen of Spain in 1568
Claude of Valois, French Princess in 1575
Anne of Austria, Queen of Poland in 1598
Weeks/Months after(never recovered fully):
Catherine of Valois, Dowager Queen of England in 1437
Isabel Neville, Duchess of Clarence in 1476
Barbara Zápolya, Queen of Poland in 1515
Aditionally deaths of royal women:
Blanche of England died of fever in 1409, she was pregnant at the time
Mary of Burgundy died in 1482, weeks after she fell from horse and broke her back. She was pregnant at the time.
Claude of France, Queen of France  might have died from childbirth or miscarriage in 1524, although different causes are also speculated by historians-mainly illness and poison.
Catherine of Saxe-Lauenburg, Queen of Sweden died in 1535. She was pregnant and fell badly while dancing. The fall confined her to bed and lead to complications and eventually her death.
Joanna of Austria, Grand Duchess of Tuscany had fell from stairs in 1578 eight months pregnant. She then had premature labour where baby was in difficult position and both of them died.
Deaths due to cancer of reproductive organs:
Barbara Radziwiłł, Queen of Poland died in 1551. The cause was widely speculated at the time, but modern historians think it could have been cervical or ovarian cancer.
Mary I of England died in 1558 fallowing phantom pregnancy. Historians think it could have been ovarian or uterine cancer.
(Some might disagree with Catherine of Valois dying of childbirth. But imo, if you think her giving birth and her death detoriating not long after is not at least contributing factor, then you’re insane.)
It’s a lot of women. Those were the days. Men fought on battlefields and women had battlefield of their own. The most heartbreaking for me are the cases where mother died in childbirth and the child didn’t live or died young.
I have probably missed some women. I mostly fallowed just main royal line. Queens, spouses of crown princes and blood princesses. But there should have also been wives of the rest of the princes, i just looked at few.
Also in some cases, the cause of death was not recorded, nor was there any theory about possible pregnancy pushed foward by historians. We can rule out those royal women who died pass their childbearing years. But younger ones we can only speculate about. Although in 16th century if the royal woman died of illness or generally poor health, usually it is mentioned. In 15th-usually nothing.
So we will never get 100% accuracy, but i try.
It’s certainly interesting to me reading that Queen of Sweden died after falling badly during dancing. I thought that period superstition(which lingers to today) that one should not dance is total bull. But aparently they had some dances which could cause pregnant lady harm. Idk, maybe some of those jumpy ones could cause woman to trip and fall very easily?
I will probably update this in future. Write to me if I made mistake in anything or if you know of any more royal women who died either in childbirth or after or while pregnant in 15/16th century. Or if you know anything more about death of Claude of France.

Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese, 2013)
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau, Jean Dujardin, Joanna Lumley, Cristin Milioti, Christine Ebersole, Shea Whigham. Screenplay: Terence Winter, based on a book by Jordan Belfort. Cinematography: Rodrigo Prieto. Production design: Bob Shaw. Film editing: Thelma Schoonmaker.
Leonardo DiCaprio has replaced Robert De Niro as Martin Scorsese's go-to leading man, but he has yet to make his Raging Bull (1980) or Taxi Driver (1976), which many people -- including me -- think of as the peak achievements of both Scorsese and De Niro. But The Wolf of Wall Street comes close to being DiCaprio's GoodFellas (1990). Both movies are based on true stories that illuminate the dark side of American experience: In the case of GoodFellas, the mob, and for Wolf, the unholy pursuit of wealth in the stock market. Both are in large part black comedies, full of sex and drugs, and both end in an inevitable downfall. And both have been criticized for excessively glamorizing the lifestyles of their protagonists. Terence Winter's adaptation of the memoir of Wall Street fraudster Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) spares no excess in depicting a life corrupted by unchecked greed, and yet neither Winter nor Scorsese seems able to put the course of Belfort's corruption into plausible shape, the way Scorsese and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi made Henry Hill's rise and fall plausible in GoodFellas. It's a flamboyant film, with entertaining and sometimes frightening performances by DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bernthal, and Jean Dujardin, but the film often seems to be carried away with its own determination to get away with as much outrageous behavior and language as possible. I would have welcomed a little less Jordan Belfort and a little more Patrick Denham (Kyle Chandler), who was based on Gregory Coleman, the FBI agent who finally managed to bring Belfort down. But as in GoodFellas, the emphasis is less on the law than on the disorder.

the 2024 season: deemed silly season by the fans and drivers themselves. for good reason.
questions remain: will mclaren be able to handle their two talented drivers in aella gutierrez and alexis mun? how does red bull manage the background noises of kelly piquet's father when they've got reigning world champion, jupiter nightshade, in their championship winning race car? are mercedes drivers, camellia ayudisha and sonnet pham, still good friends after the mishaps and miscommunications in the 2023 season?
or is that not what you're here for? do you want to look beyond what everyone is already talking about?
are you more curious about max verstappen's budding relationship with kelly piquet after her messy breakup with departed alphatauri driver, daniil kvyat? or mclaren and williams drivers' involvement between aella gutierrez and logan sargeant after the vast differences in their performance during their rookie season? or is it the fact that venus nightshade's current boyfriend, arthur leclerc, typically sighted in the alpine garage last season with joanna matthews, will now frequent the ferrari garage instead? or is it the rumours that alexis mun and, long-term boyfriend, atticus singh allegedly broke up over the winter break? or are you intrigued by prior mercedes reserve driver, mick schumacher, stepping away from the team to join alpine in the world endurance championship, as his girlfriend, sonnet pham, continues to drive for the same team?
could it be that you're wondering how the nightshades are affected after ferrari's mishandling of the rookie's talent in 2023, while the reigning world champion is accommodated by red bull time and time again? or the friendly sibling rivalry as the leclerc's are separated by a wall between their girlfriends' garages on a race weekend?
frankly, we've got the same questions.

A black-and-white chalk drawing of the head of a portly man was recently sold at a Christie’s auction as the only work firmly attributed to Marietta Robusti, daughter of the Venetian master Jacopo Robusti, perhaps better known as Tintoretto. Reports from her contemporary biographers suggest that Marietta, who worked in her father’s workshop in the late 16th century, was an accomplished and sought-after artist in her own right. But in the centuries that followed she fell into obscurity. Now, amid a growing movement to reclaim the women artists so often neglected by history, Marietta has the potential to join 16th-century peers such as Lavinia Fontana and Sofonisba Anguissola in the history books – if only researchers could find some more of her work.
‘Marietta had a brilliant mind like her father. She painted such works that men were astonished by her talent,’ writes Carlo Ridolfi, author of a biography of Jacopo Tintoretto and two of his children, Domenico and Marietta, first published in 1642. Nicknamed ‘La Tintoretta’, Marietta – who, according to Ridolfi, dressed as a boy in order to assist her father on his projects – is recorded as having painted many portraits and produced works of her own invenzione. Another of Tintoretto’s early biographers, Raffaello Borghini, reports how Marietta was requested as a court artist by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II, Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, and King Philip II of Spain – although ‘Greatly loving his daughter, [Tintoretto] did not want her taken from his sight,’ writes Borghini.
With such glowing accounts of Marietta’s artistic prowess, attempts to rediscover her work have been numerous and in some cases quite inventive. Unfortunately, these endeavours have rarely been successful.
One of the most commonly attributed paintings is a Self-Portrait with Madrigal located in the Uffizi’s Corridoio Vasariano in Florence. The painting shows a young woman in a white dress with her right arm resting on a harpsichord behind her and a music score in the other hand. The Uffizi labels the work as by Marietta Robusti in its online catalogue. However, art historians have questioned the credibility of this attribution based on provenance records, which show that the portrait was attributed to Titian by a Venetian collector in the 17th century.
Most damning of all, though, is the mediocrity of the painting. The art historian Joanna Woods-Marsden comments in her book Renaissance Self-Portraiture (1998) that the rudimentary foreshortening and poor anatomy are hard to reconcile with the praise lauded on Marietta by her biographers. Duncan Bull, writing in the Burlington Magazine in 2009, dismisses it as ‘a feeble work that speaks more of Verona than of Venice, let alone of Tintoretto’s workshop’. The lack of naturalism and the stiffness of the sitter are worlds away from the fluid, energetic style characteristic of a pupil of the Venetian master.
‘Marietta’s special gift,’ according to Ridolfi, ‘was knowing how to paint portraits well.’ This was not unusual praise for 16th-century women artists, who were highly valued as portraitists. Women were considered to have an eye for detail, particularly jewellery and decoration on clothing, which was so crucial in portraiture for demonstrating a sitter’s wealth and status.
Several portraits have been tentatively attributed to Marietta Robusti. These include a Portrait of an Old Man and a Boy in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Rijksmuseum’s Portrait of Ottavio Strada. The attribution of the former painting rested on the signature ‘M R’ on the bottom left of the canvas; after cleaning, it appears that the signature actually reads ‘M 3’. The painting in Amsterdam, currently catalogued as by Jacopo Tintoretto, has received attention because Marietta’s early biographers mention a portrait she painted of the courtier Jacopo Strada. Some art historians argue that the biographers mistakenly cited Jacopo instead of his son Ottavio Strada – and that the Rijksmuseum’s painting is the portrait in question. But this is just one theory.
Plenty of historic catalogue entries attribute other work to Marietta, but evidence of these paintings is now thin on the ground. It is likely that Marietta also helped her father with public commissions, such as paintings in their local church in Venice, the Madonna dell’Orto. But her contributions in this respect are hard to pinpoint.
Just one drawing, therefore, is categorically attributed to Marietta. Head of man, after the antique, which sold at Christie’s in Paris last month for €100,000, depicts the Roman emperor Vitellius drawn from an ancient bust – a copy of which Tintoretto kept in his workshop. Scrawled across the drawing are the words ‘this head is by the hand of madonna Marietta’, probably added by her father to distinguish the drawing from the countless others that would have lain about the workshop.
This drawing is a much-needed example of Marietta’s talents. As Stijn Alsteens, international head of Christie’s Old Master drawings department explains to me via email, ‘Marietta in her time was admired as a portraitist, and the drawing can be said to reflect her interest in physiognomy.’ The drawing, Alsteens says, confirms Ridolfi’s account that Marietta was a gifted member of her father’s studio, on an equal footing with her male counterparts.
Tumblr media
In the drawing, Marietta captures the head in soft, swift strokes, economic shading and dashes of highlights. We see the fluidity and movement expected of an artist trained by Tintoretto. On the recto of the sheet is another drawing from Tintoretto’s workshop of unknown attribution portraying the face of Giuliano de’ Medici. ‘Where the recto is mostly a study of light and shadow, the verso focuses on the distinctive features of Vitellius’s face – true to Marietta’s gifts as a portraitist,’ Hélène Rihal, head of Christie’s Old Master drawings department in Paris, said in advance of the sale.
Although the attribution is accepted, it is only one drawing and that poses a dilemma for anyone seeking to restore Marietta’s reputation. The historical evidence has the potential to put Marietta on a par with contemporaries like Fontana or Anguissola. The gaping hole is the physical evidence. For the moment La Tintoretta, the legendary woman artist, remains just that – a legend.

Sportz
Remnant loves sports, and when the season comes around to shoot hoops and throw an oval across a field, the rivalry goes OFF.
Ruby and Jaune root for the Redwolves, and Ruby wears a jersey at games.
Yang is a Grizzly. Blake is a Panther, and Weiss, alas, is dedicated to the Atlas Snowshoes, earning flack from her team. Rumors around games mumble that long-ago alliances gave the Snowshoes illegal Dust upgrades.
Qrow and Raven root for the Crows and Ravens and they are as combative, headbutting, and cantankerous about it as you would expect.
The Happy Huntresses are Timberwolves, although Fiona also likes the Rams and Joanna asserts the Wolverines can wipe the floor with either of them any day of the week.
Winter and Whitley like the Emperors, and ignore their parents' marriage in the background.
Mercury is a Hawk and Emerald is a Ferret.
Klein and Hazel are Badgers.
Watts doesn't root for any team since his science fair project for automated water boys didn't win, and he plots ways to sabotage Atlas games.
SSSN are the 'Mates (pirate monkeys).
The White Fang is divided between the 'Mates, the Jaguars, and the Elephants, and but a lot goes on when they storm the Jaguar v. Snowshoe game at championships. "Blake, root for me!" Adam calls from the chaos. Blake frowns in the bleachers. She kind of forgot about him.
Nora, for reasons known only to herself, is a Gopher.
Ren is an Akita.
Ilia roots for the Monitor Lizards, and doesn't realize what she's going to go through from how lame that is.
Ozpin roots for the Primordial Jellyfish. Somewhere deep in Evernight Castle Salem seethes in front of her flatscreen, as she has been on their side from day one.
Penny misunderstands a conversation about pigskin and returns to the stadium hauling a wild boar in her arms. "He's choosing a team!" she says when players scatter from its charge.
The bartender from that one gas station likes cleaning while watching the Rodeo Bulls.
Pyrrha roots for the Thoroughbreds, and somehow she always calls it when they're going to win.
The sports fandom goes crazy. So much intensity has tornadoed inside the championships that Grimm drawn in by the negativity back away from the stadium and look for someone else to attack. Remnant Sportz Lives On.
